Vikali paced back and forth in her small den frowning, tail flicking back and forth. She looked uneasy, and anyone who knew Vikali meant that this was very bad news. It meant she was liable to be crankier than usual, and would easily bite someone's head off if they said even one wrong word. She growled and suddenly moved for the entrance to her den, leaving it. She couldn't stay couped up in there. Besides... what if Ukir decided to head that way? She needed time. Time to figure out what the hell was going on... why did he show back up after all of this time?

She took a deep breath and exhaled, and then repeated this for a few times. It was not as calming as so many had told her though, in fact she just felt more annoyed because it wasn't working. Hunt! She could hunt! The pride was always looking for another meal, was it not? With it being as huge as it was every prey taken down was added benefit!

As she started to head away from priderock her bright blue gaze landed on another brightly colored lion; her son, Mchumba. She slowed her pace and sighed, then brightened. This could also be a distraction from her thoughts! It would be something good... hopefully. "Mchumba." She called out simply, smiling softly.

The large lion had been sunning himself not terribly far from Pride Rock. The sunshine felt good upon his rose and purple coat, with the softest of breezes tickling his plush mane. It wasn't unusual for the male to often be spotted sunning and generally looking a bit lazy; he wasn't the most outgoing of males out there, and even in his maturity, he was soft spoken and a bit shy.

Granted, his upbringing had been a bit unusual compared to many other pride land families. There had been an absent father and his mother, as much as he adored her, had raised them under a firm paw. The boys were to be well behaved, respectful towards females, and make sure they were seen and not heard. Or something like that. Rough and tumble wasn't for Mchumba, nor any of his brothers, and that was something he'd never been able to shake.

Unfortunately, this put him in a precarious position. He was bashful and a little terrified of other lionesses, though he would happily serve any of their wishes. And around males, he was too gentle, too much of a pretty-boy to get his paws dirty or mane tangled. So it left him with few friends and an awkward social life. But he didn't mind not . . .really. He was who he was, and it was probably best for everyone that he stayed under the radar.

Preparing to close his eyes, to drift off in to lazy dreams, a voice called out. It was a voice he often longed to hear, a voice he had once tried endlessly to please, to garnish attention from. It was Vikali, his mother. Green eyes opened quickly, and he was swift to get to his paws. The yellow and black lioness looked nothing like him, save for her eye color. But there was no doubt he was his mothers son . . .

"Mother." He called out, words soft but filled with untarnished love. Perhaps it was strange for a grown lion to still bow to the whims and fancies of his mother, but Mchumba had never been known for his guts or will - Vikali had helped aid that in his teachings. He regarded her with both fear, respect, and adoration. . . . Mchumba had never enough attention from her as a young cub, and even as an adult, secretly yearned for her pride.

Padding up to a respectful distance, he dipped his head in greeting, a shy but affectionate smile on his face. "To what do I pay this honor?" To Mchumba, it was a great honor indeed.

Vikali was relieved to hear Mchumba's voice, still as sweet and respectful as when he was a cub. When he stopped a bit away from her she nodded her head as well, smiling lightly. She closed the gap between them and butted her head softly against his shoulder, nuzzling into his side. It was a very rare display of affection from the lioness, it even surprised herself a little. Any who saw the pair might not guess that they were mother and son, Mchumba's pelt was much more similar to the father's that he never knew. Though, Vikali couldn't recal the purple that had been there. Come to think of it, the bright blue on her other son had been a bit weird as well. When she'd become pregnant with Ukir's cubs she assumed they would be just as brightly colored, but that wasn't the case. They'd take after the pridelanders, taken after their mother for sure. Still, Vikali would have liked more pretty cubs... crap, what was she thinking? Instantly when she'd thought that an image of Ukir appeared in her mind! She wanted to bash her head against a rock, hadn't she had enough punishment from that red devil as it was?

"Ah... I just thought it would be nice to have some company with my child." She finally stated, in reply to his question. So what if it was partially a lie, it was also partially true. The company would do her good, she hoped. "You know how hard it is to get along with the lionesses in these lands. So ... so different." But in the hesitance it was clear what she'd wanted to say; so weak, the lionesses she shared her pride with were weak! Sure, some could out run her or out hunt her but over all they lazed about and tried to find themselves mates to just settle down and get fat with cubs and... well wasn't that what she'd done? But it was different, the first male she'd gotten over quite swiftly when it was clear he wasn't going to stick around to help raise her first litter of beautiful cubs. As for Ukir... her tail flicked and she growled to herself.

Wasn't this meeting supposed to take her mind off of things? She sat down and faced Mchumba, a slow and mischievous smile appearing on her maw. "So my lovely little Mchumba, any females in your life?" She tried to ignore the little inkling of guilt forcing it's way into her conscious, knowing how she'd raised her boys and what they were like. There weren't many females with a similar mind set as her own, who catered to looks far quicker than personalities... and her boys were beautiful! Maybe not strong or capable of much, but they were gorgeous and anyone who thought different clearly was blind. But over the years she'd started to wander about herself... if she wanted her sons to recognize that females were stronger, providers and should be in charge... where did that put her with Ukir? He wasn't exactly docile!

So sorry this took so long to tag! Will try to be more prompt with future replies. n_n

Vikali had raised her boys under a strict paw, and thankfully for her, Mchumba had eaten up every word. As far as he had been concerned, his mother could do no wrong and her way of life was normal. Females were to be completely and thoroughly respected, admired, and in a slightly twisted sense, feared. They were supposed to be strong, intelligent, and the brains of the outfit. . .as a male, well, Mchumba understood he was second-class. He was to be beautiful - which he was - but he was also to be weak, to defer to the females of the world, and to be at their every whim.

Unfortunately, Vikali had been given a daughter to spoil, and Mchumba had envied his sister so very, very much as a cub. He had wanted to be strong, had wanted to impress his mother, had wanted just a few moments of her time. As a cub, he had felt deprived of her love, which in turn meant as an adult, he still craved her attention. Mchumba had always been of a sweet nature, and his mother had imprinted upon him at such an early age, it was unlikely he would ever turn from her views.

Even now, long since grown, he found himself in an odd place. He cherisehd this moment, and was shocked by his mothers sudden display of affection, but the happy purr that appeared in his throat only mimicked the joy he felt. It wasn't often Vikali offered such kindnesses to her son, and Mchumba understood his place. The lionesses of the pride were quite different from Vikali, this much he knew. . . . but then again, the lions of the pride land were also quite different from how Mchumba and his brother had been raised.

Unfortunately for the lion, it meant his life was in a constant state of in-between. He didn't quite fit in anywhere in the Pride Lands, with minimal friends who never quite understood his views, and certainly some that scorned the ideas of his mother. But Mchumba was Mchumba. . . . now that he was getting much older, he found himself questioning things more and more. . . .

But it was unlikely he would ever change.

"Perhaps you will find some worthy of your time. Surely of all the lionesses, one must be strong like you." He commented softly, admiration and respect clearly written in his voice. "I will hope you find her soon, so you needn't suffer another fool." He truly hoped his mother might find some peace with other lionesses in the pride lands. It would do her good to find others of like mind, of like spirit. . .

But her next question surprised the green eyed male. Him? A . . .female? In his life!? He blinked before glancing away, feeling his ears burn with a bit of embarrassment. While love was something that interested him, the male had also come to understand that it was unlikely to happen. There were no females that caught his eye, and the few that had only looked upon him as a friend. . . or far too useless to ever be considered mate material.

He was weak. He was respectful, and certainly would worship any female in his life, but Mchumba was also a bit terrified of other lionesses. He needed to find someone his mother might respect, but that was . . .unlikely to happen. Furthermore, Mchumba himself feared them for their power of him. He was weak. . . and with age realized compared to other males, he was not strong. He was different.

And that was just the way it was going to be.

"No, Mother. I haven't found any who caught my eye, or I theirs I suppose." But such was the way of things. If he never had cubs, never took on a mate, so be it. Some things just weren't meant to be, after all.
