Sometimes the smallest creatures can take out the largest giants. On a picnic Bataar finds his greatest weakness... and Sara freaks the f-ck out!
PostPosted: Wed Dec 21, 2011 4:38 pm

Sara looked in the mirror at the newest imperfection. She wondered how a conduit managed to look so beat up all the damn time.

Her mother would seriously freak out if she saw her, especially if she discovered the hidden half of her face. It had been so long since she was attacked but for some reason the conduit still felt the need to hide them, most of her injuries were a secret, the only person who really know they existed was Bataar. Not because, for-whatever reason, he saw more of her than any other person. He just tended to be there when they happened, even more so he seemed to like looking at them, which was still something beyond her understanding. He was a strange man... but that is why she liked him.

She wrapped the bandage around her side once more and pulled her blue and orange wrap over her chest to keep it all in place. She was not worried about this one, it would most likely disappear and it was not as sore as some of her other ones had been, still, it bloody stung when she bent over too much.

The conduit was just about ready to face the day, she had already taken a bath to get rid of the dry rain water in her hair and she was wearing her temple robes. She had the joyful duty which was the night-shift tonight, tending to the injured as the battles broke out. Not her favorite task, but one she had gotten better at - without realizing it she had become one of the most experienced healers in her little temple, so close to becoming a Priestess and becoming head of her own.

Though her promotion had not been discussed yet, so she dare not get her hopes up. Well... maybe she did a little, but that was not the point.

She opened one of the small jars on her table and brought it to her nose, rose and vanilla invaded her nostrils. She was still a common face in that little shop that sold perfumes and other cosmetics. She ran her finger in the tub and rubbed the substance on her lips. A couple of sprays of her grapefruit perfume and she was done.... She stopped for a moment, wondering when she started going through this morning ritual...

Van. It had to be. The woman was a Guru when it came to this stuff, maybe it had rubbed off on her. Not that she minded, she loved spending time with Van, she was like the big sister she never had.

Ghost scrapped at the door and whined, golden eyes looking over at Sara as if to beg her to let him out. He sneezed and rubbed his nose with his paw, clearly not a fan of her perfume. She chuckled and pushed it open, then off he went like lightning, no doubt not to return until sunset, the wolf was wild, always was, always would be. Sara stepped outside and folded her arms, watching him disappear.

She had a good feeling about today, despite the drama which occurred last night. Thinking about the Mongol man, was that him heading across the field?

The picnic basket was badly prepared. Anyone with half a brain would have been able to comprehend that much about the badly-packed thing. It had only been a short while since his encounter with Sarangerel in the woods but he was feeling, on the whole, rather tragically upset about the entire thing. Even his mother had seemed impressed with his attitude(once she'd gotten the whole thing out of him), and that was not good.

Food, even if it was badly made, seemed like the best possible mode of actual apology, which he was certain Sara would be expecting. There was no way the soul conduit would have let him get away with his actions and his arguing as he'd done yesterday without making it extremely clear that any attempt to do so again was not going to be tolerated. She had seemed extremely angry yesterday, after all, which was horrifying in and of itself. Sara was never extremely angry-- that just wasn't how it was supposed to work, especially not with Bataar. It made him cringe just to think of the altercation that the two of them had undergone.

The Mongol heaved a sigh and started to trudge slowly in the direction of Sara's home, traipsing through the field carelessly while man-handling the basket in his arms. He watched with a faint sense of embarrassment as she let her dog out and offered her a sheepish wave as she spotted him, putting down his basket for a moment to determine whether or not he was actually welcome. The Legionnaire was, he was sure, still injured; maybe she wouldn't want to see him back just yet.

"Uh, I brought food." he declared somewhat loudly, still a bit of a distance away from the doorway in which Sara was actually standing. He would leave if she didn't want him here.

He... brought food?

Sara cocked her head to the side, trying to make sense of the situation. Was he being serious? Yes, it seemed like he was. In truth she did not know what to say to that, she would have never expected in one million years he would ever be the one preparing food for her, after all, it was her that had done all the cooking to this day. Her expression softened, knowing that this was his apology for yesterday. Though in truth she really should have really been the one apologizing, she might have been hit by an arrow but it was an accident. She knew that Bataar would never harm her on purpose, she did not know why she overreacted so much.

She started to wonder over to him, making a silent vow to herself; no matter how bad whatever he made was; she would eat it. After-all he had gone through all this trouble and who knows, she might be pleasantly surprised by his culinary skills. "I can see that." She would have gone on to ask him about his new domestic role but she thought it best not to. For now she smiled and wondered closer, opening her arms and wrapping them around his neck, her toes barely still on the ground. He had his way of saying sorry, she had hers, hopefully hers was just as effective - if not a little more spontaneous.

She just wanted to sweep the whole night under the carpet, after-all she had found herself caught up in business that she had no right dabbling in. She was just at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Suddenly Sara forgot why she was so angry in the first place and she certainly did not want the conversation weighted by such serious matters. She would rather enjoy the time they spent together...

"I was actually just about to come and see you, I acted like a child. Forgive me?" She asked, leaning back every so slightly, looking up at the giant with her large, pale eyes. They both could have handled the situation better, but she would rather avoid the topic of why she was really annoyed. A small blush crept on her tanned cheeks as she looked to the side, ir was getting harder to hide the fact from him.

The raw fish and meat within the basket was hardly edible and neither was the stale bread that he'd recycled from the last time Sarangerel had visited. Their roles had certainly not switched then-- not in that aspect. The food was uncooked and, on the whole, inedible but, like a cat bringing its owner a dead mouse, Bataar brought this so-called meal forth with a sense of pride. He'd never prepared a picnic basket before and he thought it was quite nice. Sure, they might have to throw a few things on the fire to cook them a little more, but it was all well and good! That sort of thing could be worked out.

The captain hugged the soul conduit back rather gingerly, making sure to avoid her wound, and soon took her by the shoulders in order to push her back a few steps. Contact with Sarangerel tended to make him feel physically ill, after all, as if his heart had some sort of an irregularity that decreased his ability to breathe. It couldn't be healthy and he wasn't about to encourage it. More illness was the last thing he needed.

It seemed, however, that Bataar was forgiven. He smiled and briefly pecked the Legionnaire on the forehead before taking a fur from his basket and setting it upon the ground. "Very well. How's your wound?" he asked, busily taking out the horrifying items of food from the basket, one by one. Flies seemed to be extremely attracted to the raw fish especially(which, by the way, reeked). It was not a meal fit for any living being but Bat seemed not to notice.

Overlooking the actual cooking part of food seemed to be a special skill that only the Mongol could excel at. He had managed to survive on very little for quite some time and could probably make much less than anyone expected. Donations were always welcome.

Sara looked up at him as he pushed her back a little, did that mean he was still mad with her? The conduit was not quite sure. After all it was usually him taking the lead when it came to things like this.

When the conversation lead back to her injury she looked to her side, resting her hand on-top of the bandage. "Its just a scratch, pitiful little thing when you look at it really." It was true, it was about as long as a... well an Arrow head, it was fairly deep but you could not really tell by the red slit which was left behind. Luckily the leather had protected her a little, if she had been wearing her normal clothing there would have been nothing to slow it down. If that was the case the situation could have been a lot more serious than it had turned out, though she did not like to dwell on that.

She went back to folding her arms, giving the Mongol a playful look. "Lucky for you I do not think it's going to scar, I would not be too happy if it ruined my waist." Sara's mid-region was one of the only parts of her body to not be bruised, broken, stabbed or marked and she wanted to keep it that way. After all she had no desire to look like a pin cushion or a training dummy.

As he showed off his efforts a genuine look of thanks came onto her face, as did a small smile. She recognized that bread... and that fish, how old was that stuff? She found his totally inability to cook adorable as-well as a little unnerving, how was this man at all self sufficient? How had he lasted this long on his own? It was something Sara would never understand.

The thought was nice though and he seemed so pleased with himself. His quirks were one of the main reasons why she felt so strongly about him. "It looks great. All we need to do is get a fire going." She stated, looking back at the pit where she usually cooked outside, maybe this food was a little heavy for breakfast, but Bataar did not seem to mind and she had already made a vow to appreciate whatever he brought. Even if her stomach might not like her very much for it later.

Where was that damn dog when you needed him? She would not even let Bataar eat this fish, it would put him straight back in his sickbed. Though that probably meant feeding it to her dog was not the best idea either... she would think of something to avoid the fish, even if she had to burn it, by accident ofcourse. She would never purposely ruin her prize catch, right?

She wondered over to sit on the ground, looking up at the clouds which floated above their heads. "How about you? I know you are still recovering from your illness." She asked, her tone a little more serious than it had been previously. In truth she could not believe he was out on the front lines again so quickly. He still was not back to how he was, she knew that almost as well as he did. Sara had cared for him all those weeks, worried about him daily. She was glad he was able to move but the images were still fresh in her head, she hated seeing the man suffer.

More so than she could describe.

Bataar glanced at Sara's hand with a small frown, discerning the approximate location of the wound and feeling a little on the helpless side for a moment or two. His remorse was at a very high level, to say the least, and he sincerely wished that there was some way to go back and change things. Generally speaking, he liked inflicting injury, but this was one wound that he wasn't proud of. He would be very guilty if it left a scar.

"Just try to take care of it." he advised, his hands fluttering about the food as if he didn't quite know what to do with it all. It was mainly leftovers and raw meat and the edibility of it all was extremely questionable. He glanced at Sara, obviously skeptical about her comment: the food did not look fine. Even Bataar was sharp enough to detect that particular detail. He glanced at the fish with a face, only now realizing just how putrid it smelled and thinking on how it had been in close proximity with many other items of food that he'd dragged along. If the picnic was meant to be an apology then it must have seemed extremely insincere.

At the mention of his illness, he offered up a weak smile. It had debilitated him more than he would have liked to admit, but he seemed to be getting over it much more by now. It was a definite relief to feel the strength returning to his limbs, even if it did mean that he was going to be worked a lot harder. It was just good to feel normal again at this point; that was definitely the best part. His days were a lot simpler now that he was healthier.

In any case, he considered himself fine now. "I think I'm much better now." he declared with a few more ounces of confidence than he actually felt. He was going to have to ease out of his one-sentence answers if this was going to be comfortable for either of them, he knew. "How's your job been going? Found any boyfriends?" He grinned, unaware of any possible implications his joke may have had. That was what girls like Sara were interested in, right? Besides, he smelled perfume on her and she was wearing something on her lips; it was probably for a guy or something. That was probably just the reality of things.

All the same, the Mongol reflected, he was going to have to give this boy a beating.

Work, if Sara could talk about anything, it was work. Her whole life basically revolved around it. "I could be a Priestess soon. Its actually going better than I ever expected. I think so at least, I am learning how to control them, how to live with them without the threat of them getting too close and overpowering me. I can even block them out when I do not want to hear them. Its like... well I guess it like you on a normal day. I feel stronger." She did not want to concentrate on the body count, or the corpses, or the other glamorous parts of the job. She had got used to all of them by now, yet the feeling of hope and strength which comes from her studies was what really mattered to her. She was deprived a normal childhood thanks to her inability to channel the spirits, not she was getting better at it, life in general was much easier. She had gained more confidence, they no longer controlled her. Not anymore.

She had started to feel normal. Well, maybe not completely, but more so than she ever did before. She was still the quirky one who spent most of her time around spirits and wolves. Yet at least she was not known viewed as insane by the vast majority of the city. "How about you? I know you can not really tell me much, but, everything is well?" It was always a kind of taboo topic with the two, however Sara wanted him to know she understood, she actually thought she handled yesterday quite well. It was part of his life an if she wanted to be apart of it too then, she would have to accept him for who he was.

Not that she did not already.

Then she finally realized what the second half of his questioning was implying. "W-wha- I mean." Her cheeks turned a bright red colour, pale eyes darted to the side as if she could not look at him, which she could not at this time. "No." She stated in a quiet tone, she cleared her throat and looked back at him, her cheeks still rosy from the sudden rush of blood, suddenly she felt the sickly feeling in her stomach again and the food seemed even less appealing.

It was the second time in two days he had shot her with a arrow. She did not know which one was more painful at this point. "I mean, I am more of a little sister than a girlfriend really." She chuckled, rubbing the back of her head nervously. That came out all wrong, she just wanted to die now...

"How about you? Still happily married?" She had to ask, she hoped that he was not interested in anyone... well, not unless it was a certain person. How did he manage to make her feel so awkward with such few words? She realized a long time ago that he liked him, but her feelings were only seeming to grow. She could not let him know that though so... she would have to pull her act together.

Bataar listened with a fairly docile expression as Sara explained her job and how well it seemed to be going. He was sincerely happy for her, but it was surprising to have to try and accept the fact that this probably meant she was moving farther and farther away from him. She was, after all, a Legionnaire whereas he was a Noble: if she became a priest there was no way that they could be friends in any harmonious manner. Not as candidly as they already were, at the very least.

He nodded when she asked about his occupation. "Yes. Everything's been going well." Very well now that the emperor's dead. He viewed his own job as not worth mentioning in the company of Sarangerel. It was a subject that he'd always considered very troublesome and he tended to avoid it like the plague. It just wasn't what he wanted to think about when he was around her: it meant that she'd probably be in danger as long as he was around. That was a fact of life that he hadn't yet accepted; not with his protective nature. The very concept was painful to behold to a man like Bataar, who preferred being in control.

As much as he may have been feeling a tinge of jealously, Bataar mustered an evil grin. "Oooh? Who is this guy, then?" he asked, wriggling his eyebrows suggestively. "Another waifish soul conduit, perhaps?" The thought of it was worthy of a good vomit, but Bat supposed that he'd refrain. "Unrequited love?" he asked, taking the joke even further. He'd given up hope for himself which tended to pique his interest in other people's love lives, at the very least.

When asked about his so-called marriage, he smirked. "Mmm, yes, but I'm getting a little bored." he cooed, groping the air to some extent to indicate that his idea of a good time involved buxom ladies. "Maybe someone a little more my type. Big chest, long blonde hair, not too many clothes..."

Bataar probably deserved something karmic in nature at this point. And so, in the midst of his air groping, a bee decided that it was quite angry and stung his pinky finger. The Mongol cried out in pain and annoyance and quickly dispatched the bug but had yet to realize the particular effects of a bee's venom. They'd show up pretty soon.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 23, 2011 5:20 pm

"Unrequited love, huh?" She asked with a small chuckle, he had really hit the nail on the head with that one. So much so it was almost painful, even though she loved to be around him, it was sometimes difficult to keep her spirits high. Especially when she was being mocked. Maybe a little while ago the conduit would have been silent when such topics were disgusted. However she refused to let it intimidate her, meetings between the two often feel very serious, so for this once she decided to keep the tone light.

Even if he was mocking her, she was glad he was around and would rather appreciate the act he was here than resent him for being so oblivious to her emotions.

"My lips are sealed, at least until the question is more sincere. Its not polite to ask a lady about such matters. Especially in such a sarcastic tone." She stated, her own tone was a lot lighter than the contents of her words suggested. "After-all, I do not really view the inner-workings of my heart as a joke." She added on the end, her pale eyes wondering to the ground as her finger started to stroke the long stem of a flower. She tried to control her breathing, and the flush that spread across her cheeks, though it was really to little success. She would not help the way he made her feel, the effects his presence had on her.

Despite this, she thought she handled that quite maturely and with any luck the topic would not be raised again, to lighten the mood she picked the flower and leaned over, placing it behind his ear-fin. "Besides why are you so interested?" She asked with a small smirk, her fingers brushing his jaw line gently on their journey back to her lap. Her eyes narrowed to look into his. "Surly you can not be jealous?" She giggled, hoping this would lighten the mood.

Though a small part of her wished it was true and he secretly craved her affections and attentions as much as she did his.

Sara could not help but regain the redness she had lost when he started to grope the air. She really did not want to think of him partaking in such activities, a knot tied in her stomach and it made her feel slightly ill, for a moment she was totally gobsmacked and unable to say a word. Yet eventually some came, she cleared her throat and fanned out her hand as if she was looking to see if her nail varnish was chipped. Like she was not interested in what he did in his free time, she could not let him know that his words bothered her. "I am afraid I have no friends that match that description. Though I am sure a brothel will satisfy your needs." It might shock him to know Sara had actually been in such a place, even if it was to beg Huang not to attack him whilst he was sick.

Thinking about Huang, her mind could not help but slip back to the little bit of information that he had given her. "Actually, a little birdie told me you were more interested in men anyway." She let out without really thinking, though straight away she wished she could somehow catch the words and swallow them. Though thankfully her panic was interrupted, when he cried out she tilted her head curiously. "Hmmm?" She reached out and took his hand to take a better look.

She could not help to think this was karma punishing him for being so insensitive, never the less she kissed his finger gently, before letting his hand free.

At this point in time Bataar was watching Sara intently as she responded to his questioning. He wanted to know who she was interested in and whether or not she'd managed to get a proper background check on the guy. His protective nature was getting the best of him, he knew, but it was impossible to avoid it when he was around the soul conduit. Even if she didn't think so herself, she was surprisingly delicate-- breakable, really. She needed someone to protect her.

The captain raised his brows at the joke, watching the color rise in the other Lunarian's cheeks. Her behavior wasn't normal and it hinted at the idea that whatever her secret, it was important to her. Whoever was making her act this way must be important to her, but he didn't understand why she wouldn't reveal the guy's identity. There was no discernible reason and he couldn't think of anyone that he actually knew who might control her affections as this unknown man seemed to do. There was no telling who Sara had set her sights on at this point and it brought a very bitter taste to his mouth just to think of it. Was he jealous?

Whatever the case, the girl was much too bothered by his reference to the impossible woman for Bataar not to notice. Ignoring her bitter comment about the brothel, he responded. "I'm allowed to be jealous, aren't I? I save your life a few times and you fall for some other guy." He grinned, hiding any bitter emotion that may have risen to the surface. He would move past this at some point soon, he was sure. He could not protect Sara for too much longer, after all. She'd need someone else-- some that she actually cared about.

At her next comment he looked a little taken aback at first, but he shrugged it off easily. "I don't hold myself back with the particulars of gender." he declared, now finding that it was his turn to act disinterested. Relationships as a whole had always been a very messy business for the Mongol and, as he had now given up hope for any romantic involvement with anyone, he preferred not to talk about it. He was willing to love unconditionally regardless of other factors that may have interfered but that had only ended up causing injury to both parties in all situations. That sort of a thing apparently didn't work too well.

At this point the behemoth was too caught up in the conversation to be paying attention to his bee sting which was becoming increasingly numb. If he'd looked down within the space of time that he was speaking, he would have noticed that his pinky was rapidly swelling at this point and had turned an angry red. Allergies were not something that he was terribly attuned to.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 23, 2011 6:49 pm

Sara thought on his reaction for a while, not knowing if he was actually being serious, despite the amount of time she spent in his company, she still found him near impossible to read. She felt like she was falling, like the ground had shifted under her and swallowed her up. Her heartbeat was rising and she could clearly feel the vibrations through out her body, she could almost in fact hear them. She reflected on his words and tried to think of a appropriate way to react, was he still mocking her? Or was this mocking his way to get a point across? It was a game of chance, one that she could either take, or ignore.

She wondered what Yue would do, she had never been scared to go after what she wanted. Sara closed her eyes for a moment and tried to think, if he was playing with her, she could say her own actions were only a result of said banter.

She bit her lip slightly and clenched her hand, scooting up to the Captain a little more, so her leg was practically touching his. For a moment she remained in silence before she found her voice, as gentle as it was. "I did not know that your valiant acts of heroism were a scheme to attract my affections." She stated as she reflected back through all they had been through, all that he had done for her. It made her question his feelings, and her own, the answer was rather optimistic but one she hoped was right. Maybe he did cradle some feelings for her, maybe not as much as she did for him but... the smallest spark was still hope, right? She knew it was already complicated, she knew that they still had a long way to go, but it felt so right being in his presence. That must have meant something.

Or maybe she was just reading too much into it, as usual.

She felt doubt creep back into her heart but battled it down the best she could. She could not go on like this forever and if she stayed silent than that's how long this limbo would last. She did not love Bataar, it would be childish to think she did, but she longed for him and that was enough for now. If she was pushed back this very moment, at least the damage would not be as bad as it would it she let her feelings progress, maybe their friendship could still be repairable.

She finally turned to took at him, her breath holting, as if she just took a plunge under water. She leaned over and rested a hand on his chest, her fingers just ever so slightly touching his tanned skin. Her body rested against his arm and her face was just an inch away from his, the feeling on his breath on her face made her shiver slightly, but it was too late to turn back now. "Who is to say, said plan, was not effective?" She whispered, un-moving and not breaking eye-contact. She wanted to read a reaction, nothing more...

Sara wrapped her free fingers round his hand and brought it up in-between their faces, so his inflated pinky was in his range of sight. "By the way, you are allergic to bee stings." She stated in a very matter of fact tone, one that was nothing like the softness that her voice had possessed just a few seconds ago. Sara felt the urge to run away, like whatever armor that she surrounded herself in was now on the ground and leaving her vulnerable. She backed away from him slightly, not knowing if she really wanted to hang around for his reaction, or dwell on the topic any further.

Bataar had never been a particularly thoughtful creature. He operated, for the most part, on impulse. He didn't like to over think his feelings or to dwell on anything in particular and so, for the most part, he did not. The only thought that he gave to these sorts of things tended to be in the moment, and the moment seemed to be occurring right now. He could hear his own breaths grow shorter as Sarangerel moved nearer looking as if she'd never done anything more serious than she was currently doing.

The joke, in short, could no longer be disguised. He allowed himself a small bark of laughter as she reflected on his so-called scheme and glanced away, his cheeks coloring subtly. "Oh, you know." he replied casually, shrugging his broad shoulders and choosing to look elsewhere, trying to ignore the close proximity of the soul conduit. He was battling with himself over all of this, trying to make sense of it in his head. He absolutely didn't want it to be what he thought it was-- not logically, at least. The reckless side of him was almost begging, though. There was no possible way to reconcile the two and it was even harder to determine which impulse had more power to it.

In the end, it was the reckless side that won out. It was that damned hand on his chest. He could feel the tickle of the other Lunarian's breath, could feel her proximity. And so, instead of allowing it to drive him insane, he caved. He leaned forward, entirely on impulse, and captured her lips in his own for a brief kiss. Bataar Jaoret was not an inexperienced man and he hoped that he could read Sara well enough to be correct in his actions even if the certainty or logicality of the act was entirely lacking.

Before he knew it, however, his hand was between the two of them, in Sara's grasp and his pinky was slightly larger than his thumb. He stared, dumbfounded, at the finger that the bee had stung and grimaced, feeling a little on the ruined side. "I've had worse." he growled, suddenly moody and rather unsure of why he had kissed the girl. It wasn't right. He wasn't her age and they weren't even on the same side(he'd learned a thing or two about sides with Jianyu).

The captain snatched his hand back and scowled at it, doing his best to break whatever sort of a mood that had previously prevailed. He didn't know whether or not he'd be successful in doing it, but it was worth a try. Maybe if they both acted as if nothing had happened they could both move away from all of this. He blamed the bee.

In truth Sara was looking for something more subtle. An increase in heartbeat, a flush of the skin or a glimmer in his eyes. What he gave her was much more than that, though she was not complaining. For a moment the conduit felt her heart stop, it was not the first time Bataar had kissed her, but those acts were often so far and between the excitement never left. She had come to love the rough skin on his lip where his scar had risen, the way he always smelt like the forest and the way he tasted.

She tried her best to hold onto the moment, not knowing when it would come around again. Even though she aimed to get answers, in reality all that came out of her experiment were more questions. He was a incredibly hard man to read. Though for now she would not pry, she felt like she had pushed her luck enough for one day. His change in moon suggested to her than something might be wrong, but she could not really read his actions, nor was she aware of the the thoughts that were making him regret his actions.

Still she was next to him, and she rested her head on his shoulder lazily, her arms wrapping around his larger one. She closed her eyes and breathed in the fresh air, moments like this made everything feel more simpler than it really was.

After a moment she opened her eyes and pushed herself onto her feet. "Its such a nice day, it would be a shame to waste it." Especially since she did not have to work till later, she picked up the basket and turned around, all of a sudden feeling a lot lighter than she had done previously. "Though the fish is beyond saving." She added, tilting her head to the side and getting to work starting a fire, if Bataar genuinely thought that scaled monstrosity was edible, there was no way she was letting him cook.
