"Mrrr-rrr-rrr-aaagahgaga-"

Every time the white bits accumulated on his head and melted, Mortimer felt a little jolt. And by little, he meant enough to make him jerk and flail for a few seconds from the discharge as it leapt from one side of his face to the other. Much as he liked the cold, he did not like the peppermint smell (as it reminded him far too much of the fishy battle in the Haunted Mansion), nor the wetness of the whiteness, nor the fact that somehow the disorienting battles and cumulative JOY were making him more and more isolated. Icy wind nipped at his limbs as Mortimer hugged himself and trudged through the accumulating fluff, watching his breath float upwards.

There was cold and then there was deathly cold. Odd or not, Mort didn't want the latter right now. What he wanted was to see a friendly face - preferably not one from the Christmas lot, lest he make a fight that has them rolling about in the awful white bits and have him short out further at their happy expense.

"Mrrrrr . . ."

"ROCH?!"

Taryn was still stumbling around blindly. She had not hit either the barrier or the school and so still had some hope that she would run into Roch. Her ankles were freezing and snow caught in her fur, clinging and chilling the poor ghoul to the bone. Even her hooves were beginning to feel the effects. Why hadn't she worn legwarmers and gloves?

Well, it hadn't been this cold.

They hadn't been warned that the play would become... this.

Instead of a shock of purple, though, there was a blur of blue. She rushed toward it without a second thought. Blue was kind of a festive color in this case, after all. "Hello?! Hello?!"

Mort turned towards the shouts, blinking furiously as some of the fluff landed in his eyes and smeared his glasses. "H-Harro?" he called back, slipping them off and trying his best to clean them off on a somewhat wet shirt. The voice was familiar, and coupled with the red blur heading his way . . . "T-Taryn!" With glasses only slightly better off from his attempts, the zombie shambled over towards her, shaking off more snow. "Y-Y-Y-You k-kay?" he asked, rubbing his arms. "N-No at-t-t-ttack, yes?"

Mort! Taryn made a pathetic little sound as she picked up the speed and burst into clarity before her friend. She threw her arms around him instinctively, burying her face in his, uh... fragrant neck. When she pulled away she was too relieved to be embarrassed.

"We got attacked by... a dancer. A candle? Two snowmen ripped Roch and I apart, I don't know where he is-- we were searching the barrier for a way out and the snow--!" Sure, she wasn't making much sense in the simplest form but certain things could be ascertained. The chimera was panting, desperate for some kind of help. Roch could be hurt!

o3o She felt waaaaaaarm. "C-Candle?" he repeated incredulously (and perhaps a bit anxiously as well). Not a lit one he hoped. Sweet Sally, if he had to watch for roving fire too . . . "Ch-Chill, is okay," Mort told her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "G-Got sep'rated f-f-from group too. Roch s-sounds like can t-t-take c-care've self. W-Will find 'ventually, yes?"

His span of experience was limited to Groanspring and the play tryouts, but hey: Mort often made observations based on shallow details on the fly anyway. Purple hair, mohawk, rockin' guitar, tattoo, piercings - that was the sort of guy who could handle himself, right? Or bash things in really viciously.

"Cold?" he asked as the wind picked up. "C-Can give coat if want. N' wh-what barrier?"

Taryn shook her head, shoving her hands back into her coat pockets. She didn't need a coat and Roch could take care of himself... but she wanted him. She wanted to be sure he was okay. Her chest swelled with a deep sigh and it emerged in a puff of steam.

"...you haven't seen the barrier?" she asked, eyes going wide, "It's all the way around the school or... mostly around the school. The monsters are getting in somehow... anyway. It's huge and cold and you can't see through it. Roch and I were patrolling the edge when we got attacked. Maybe they didn't want us near it? Maybe we should go back..." What if they had narrowly missed something? It would be worth it to check if that spot had been patrolled... ... but now she had no idea where she was relative to that portion of the barrier, and how would she even find that one area? It had been snowing so hard...

"Hmm.. well... if things are so chilly in here, how about we add a bit of heat to the party!"

Oh no! A wild candle has appeared! What will Mort do?

Wait... a minute... all this seems familiar somehow...

"N-No, hasn't seen . . . Maybe should -"

And then, as if merely talking about the barrier, a candle creature approached. . . And Mort screamed at its sudden appearance.

"NO NO NO NO NO NO -" Those red eyes, that delightfully cheery voice, the nauseating feeling in his stomach as JOY permeated even more in the air. Like a little scareling, the zombie freaked out and kicked snow in its general direction, cowering behind Taryn (despite being taller).

Blue fire, it wasn't. Fire fire, it was. Mort had already been threatened to be burned by Hunters, and now Christmas wanted in on the fun? He was going to fall apart at this rate!

"NO!"

It didn't matter if it wasn't the same candle. It didn't matter either that it had not directly threatened anyone. The terrible skittering legs were enough to cause a panic reaction in Taryn, and she kicked a spray of snow over the candle, causing the flame to sizzle. Speak of the devil! She knew of Mort's fear of fire as well (it was an undead thing, wasn't it?) and took a protective stance in front of him.

Candle used Flamethrower!

The attack was ineffective. =(
It seems to be pouting a little... it might just have a slight problem with wanting to burn things.

...oh yeah? Well, fighting fire with fire and all those other cliches! Taryn reared back and came in with a plume of smoking fire, aiming straight for the candle's 'body' in an attempt to melt it all away.

What was Mort's status?

brb cowering

He couldn't so much as lift a finger to help Taryn fight the thing off, which . . . Oh Jack. He forgot chimeras could expel fire too.

brb cowering on the ground now

"No no no no no no . . ." It was like his re-materialization in the nurse's office after the large Hunter invasion, only this time there was no guarantee of safety.

The candle was looking rather melted, and anything that might have been words just came out as small gurgles as the wax oozed down over it's mouth. That didn't stop it from making another attack attempt, flinging gobs of hot wax off of it's leaves over at Taryn.

Screw this! Taryn reached in and kicked the candle over before leaning over it, controlling her fire to collect in a ball before her lips. Finally she blew it at the candle, effectively melting it into the snow. There was no way to miss that helpless target. That's what you got for messing with a chimera!
