 Normally the leather jacket wearing phony named Hot Rod would take to his wings when traveling through Phonyland, but for some reason today he had decided to walk. Roddy, as he prefered to be called, trotted out of the section devoted to the "stables" and into the center of the park. He sneezed as the scent of fresh paint assaulted his nostrils. There had been some mention of an addition to the park and it seemed from the lingering scent that it was true.
"Well that explains the construction noises lately," he commented as he wandered through the City finally reaching the bright shiny new section. He noticed the word "petite" featured prominantly. Scratching as his mane he considered exploring. His original intention for the day had been to meet with his friend the hyte Jasper, but this... this was something new.
"Jasper won't mind if I'm a little late," Roddy decided with a nod of his head and then stepped forward onto the new path.

The cul-de-sac of Petite Phony Place was bustling with jumpsuit-outfitted workers carrying boxes into stores, and in the middle of it all was a short woman with oversized sunglasses directing them. The delivery men jumped at her orders, and so did the tiny mare at her side.
Starlight stood near her master’s heels, slowly lapsing into a dazed state before a quick barking order would snap her out of it. It wasn’t that she had stayed up particularly late, but try as she might there was just no way to find the organization of boxes interesting. Her head was slowly starting to fall forward again when, for the first time in hours, something that was not pink walked onto the little street. Starlight only gave her master a passing glance before turning and trotting towards the entrance and the Phony that had entered.
Even if the hair was not, the jacket was most certainly recognizable, though she couldn’t exactly put her hoof on a name. All the same, the mare was glad enough for the distraction and approached the other, a line she had heard repeated all day already on her lips:
“Hello! Welcome to Petite Phony Place, home of the Petite Phony, unfortunately this district is not quite ready to open yet.”

Odd, Roddy thought as he ventured forward and saw the workmen and all the boxes. It seemed it was still a workzone. You'd think they'd have signs or caution tape up.
Since no such warnings existed he continued forward and was soon approached by one of the most dazzling mares in all of Phonyland. He regretted his nervous habit of scratching his head, his mane was probably such a mess. Unconciously he made a move to try to straighten it even as she greeted him.
"Hello, thanks. I'm sorry, I realized this was new here, but not that it wasn't opened yet. But seeing all this," he waved a hoof about indicating the hustle and bustle. "I probably should have gone back."
He looked back then returned his attention to the other phony. "You're Starlight right?" he asked. Of course she was Starlight, he knew that but she didn't seem to recognize him. Then again... "I don't think we have ever been introduced, I'm Roddy. Well my name's Hot Rod acctually, but everyone calls me Roddy." He laughed nervously not quite used to chatting with another Phony, especially a lady. When he wasn't flying in the mountains, he was hanging out with Jasper. Too much of his time was spent away from the company of his own kind and it probably showed.

Starlight could not help but fidget slightly as her embarrassment creeped up. He knew her name, but she had not his until he introduced himself. Bad social skills, as her master said. Too much time with her head up in the stars and sleeping when all decent Phonies are awake, she hardly knew anyone at all. It was not that she desired to be reclusive, but it was simply an unfortunate side-effect of her star-gazing hobby. Starlight just hoped that he wouldn’t pick up on her poor social experience. She dropped her head in a polite nod.
“A pleasure, and I am- and I remember you, we were foals at the same time,” she said brightly, proud that she at least recognized him. It was an accomplishment enough, the last time she had seen him, even just in passing, they had been much younger. Though, as ”People-Skills Guide for the Socially Reclusive Nitwit”, a gift from her ever-concerned master, says: ‘it is never too late to make a friend.’ Hot Rod seemed like a friendly enough stallion; how hard could it be?

It warmed Roddy that he was remembered. He did notice she seemed a little fidgetty. It occured to him that perhaps this was as much a new experience for her as for him. Carrying on though he hoped to make her more comfortable with casual conversation. It seemed like a good way to start with a potential friend. How else did you get to know someone?
"Its been a long time," he replied. "Once I was comfortable on my wings, I didn't spend much time around other Phonies. Not that I dislike being around everyone, its fun... but the mountains called and then the wider world outside these gates."
Roddy looked around again. "Umm, I'm not interupting am I? Does your human friend need you?"

Starlight paused, mouth already open halfway before turning to check if her master really did need her. The woman was still occupied with directing the shipments, so the mare looked back and smiled.
“No, she seems to be perfectly occupied.” It was a good a chance as Starlight could get at making her escape from the over-pinked Petite section, so she stepped forward, motioning for them to leave the cul-de-sac.
“I know what you mean, though- I don’t intend not to spend time with others, I just get so caught up with my star charts and telescope that I am up all night and end up sleeping through the day.” She explained happily before more passages of ‘People-Skills Guide for the Socially Reclusive Nitwit’ caught up with her mouth. ’Never gab on about why you don’t have friends.’ It had been a pretty stressed topic… but then again, Hot Rod had stated his reason first. Maybe this wouldn’t be so difficult as all that? She certainly hoped so, Starlight wasn’t exactly sure how long she could go without inadvertently talking about stars or horoscopes.

"Yeah, looks like she is," Roddy agreed with a chuckle as he followed.
He listened knowing it was good to be respectful and pay attention to a lady when she was speaking. When she paused thoughtfully again he decided it was safe to reply. "I hang out with a bartender so I can understand how days can get a bit reversed. And the stars are rather interesting. My human and her mate are into astronomy though they don't get out much to put interest into practice. Have you been up into the mountains to do some gazing? It's really nice and clear up there."
Roddy stopped feeling like he was babbling and looked back at the place Starlight seemed happy to be leaving. Finally he gave into his curiousity and asked. "What is that new place for anyway? It seems ... umm... " he couldn't find the right word.

Starlight’s ears flicked back, throwing a half-glance back at her human’s pet project. “Pink? Ah, well, it is for the petite phonies. They are pretty cute, all side effects aside.” As much as her human claimed it was a ‘feature’, Starlight couldn’t help but think that the petite’s incurable stupidity was more of a defect. Well, at least the ‘features’ that involve them having the drive to set everything aflame. Best to change the subject, though.
“And I have never been to the mountains. I have never been out of Phonyland. Well, once, but that was on an ‘airplane’ and I became woozy and passed out. I do not recall a thing.”

It wasn't the word he was looking for but pink would do. "Petite phonies? Side effects?" Roddy was clearly out of the loop having not heard about any of this. He scratched his head. Starlight didn't seem comfortable with the subject so he was fine leaving those questions unanswered.
"Well there are the mountains here connected to the park, so you wouldn't have to leave Phonland. Those are nice to explore. I hear there are bigger ones outside but I havn't traveled too far away from here." His eyes grew wide at the mention of an airplane, "An airplane? Really?" Roddy was fascinated with human vehicles, though cars were more his thing, but he frowned concerned that she'd passed out. "Was it the heights you think? Because mountains are high..." He was very close to asking Starlight if she'd like to come with him sometime.

“Ah, well, I do not think so.” The phony slowed her pace, eyes hazed in an un-focused stare. Her face faded and went ashen, seemingly sick from just the memory of the incident.
“I do believe it is more from…” Her ears ticked and one eye twitched as a shudder ran down her spine, “The noise and the giant machine and the pressure of takeoff.” Starlight blinked slowly and promptly blushed in embarrassment, quickly glancing over to Hot Rod and smiling unsurely. “Mountains should be just fine. I believe it is the, erm, airplane itself I have issue with.”

Roddy grew more concerned, "Are you ok? Can I get you anything?" They were in the middle of the main park so there were a number of places he could go for some type of refreshments.
She seemed embarassed as she blinked away the memory. Roddy returned her smile and half reached out as if to pat her shoulder reasuringly, but put his hoof back down quickly. To cover his own nerves his mouth just ran forward on the subject of moutains...
"Maybe we can go up their sometime? You know that way you'd have company in a strange place who knows their way around." Nevermind that he knew his way around mostly through the air. Once the idea was brought up he was full of all kinds of useful ideas. "We could head up when its still light so its easier to see where we're going, then hang out and look at the stars. I bet you could show me how to find lots more things than just Orion."

Starlight was more than thankful for the change in topic and nodded eagerly at the proposal. As long as it didn’t involve planes, by god she could do it. Really, how bad could mountains be? As long as she didn’t mar her coat, her human shouldn’t have a problem either. Starlight couldn’t help but respond to Hot Rod’s talkativeness with her own embarrassed rambling.
“That sounds lovely. Well climbing a mountain sounds difficult, though maybe in the enjoyable way, but the stars and such, and watching them- but those are just hobbies I enjoy. What are your hobbies? I mean, we’re Phonies, we all have some sort of quirky hobby.”

Roddy kept forgetting that he usually flew when he explored. "There are paths since they are still techinically part of the park. We probably wouldn't be able to get to some of the more isolated spots I can when I fly." He thought a moment she was a unicorn maybe there was somethign magic she could do. "Maybe if you put some kind of float spell on a basket I could lift you to those spots. Though of course I understand unicorns have different specialties when it comes to magic."
Then she turned the subject to hobbies. After her fear of planes being mentioned he was a little scared to talk about his. "I uh... I like cars. I collect models and stuff that my friend Jasper helps me put together." Once on the subject he kept rolling, "And I even have a real fullsized TransAm at the base of my treehouse. Acctually that's even where my cutie mark comes from. We work on it sometimes. I can't drive it of course but Jasper and Tygress, that's our human friend, can."
Since his hobby involved his hyte friend so much Roddy suddenly remember what had brought him to the center of Phonyland today. "Oh no.. Jasper. I was supposed to meet him for lunch today!"
((not sure if you want to wrap this up in the next couple posts and do a separate thread for them to go exploring. I could even bring Jasper in looking for Roddy, if you'd like Starlight to meet a hyte.))

Starlight was intently curious about this ‘TransAm’, but before she could ask the other had spoken again. She had no idea who Jasper was, it sounded like a phony name- but Hot Rod said he could drive his ‘TransAm’, maybe a unicorn then?
“Oh, my- well I see.” Starlight smiled, bowing her head slightly and replying politely, “You should go meet with him then, it would be bad to leave a friend waiting.” It was hard to fight a frown, Hot Rod was certainly an interesting phony to talk to. “Maybe… maybe I could visit you some time and see this TransAm?”
(That sounds good to me!)

((for some reason I thought I made this reply already... sorry it's been so long)) Roddy felt so bad at the moment; he was having such a good time talking to Starlight. She was being so nice about it though. "Thank you Starlight. Just think if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have come this way today," he replied with a grin that started forced but brightened when she mentioned visiting. "Yes, that would be great! You're always welcome to stop by. We keep the garage door open when we're working so feel free to pop in!" It didn't seem odd to him at all that a girl would be interested in seeing his car, after all Tygress loved it.
Roddy probably would have kept on babbling again if he wasn't distracted by the sound of hooves on pavement approaching them...Jasper had been waiting outside the park gates long enough to grow concerned; Roddy was rarely late. Finally the worry was enough for Jasper to park his car and acctually come into the park. Being "family" to a Phony he had a discounted special pass that allowed him to enter at any time. It didn't take long to spot the firey-haired pegasus and Jasper chuckled, "Well looks like he has a good reason to be late."
The mule hyte approached slowly giving the phonies a chance to see him. "Hey Roddy, I was getting worried bro!" he said when Roddy turned and noticed him. The pegasus felt his cheeks warming a bit as he braved his way through introductions. "Oh hey Jasper. Sorry to keep you waiting. I ran into Starlight on the way to the gates and we got to talking. " He turned back to the unicorn. "Starlight, this is Jasper, he's a hyte and we share the same human 'mom'. Jasper this is Starlight, she's into astronomy and her human is opening a new section her at the park with something called Petite Phonies." Jasper bowed and smiled charmingly at Starlight. "A pleasure to meet you, Miss Starlight," he said falling back to the polite titles he'd used since childhood. "I'm sorry to interupt. Roddy isn't usually late, especially for lunch plans, so I got worried."
