It was a beautiful flower. A tree-hanging orchid. But now that the tree it was hanging on was dead and toppled, it was going to die. Catch sighed as he nosed the green petals half-heartedly. It was dying already, and with the cold season well on it's way, he knew it had been inevitable. But still, he had hoped to watch it thrive for a few more days before it reached it's end. "Unavoidable, I suppose." But that didn't stop it from being sad. He looked at the clinging root, tangled in the bark like a vine, and up to the last hanging flower on it's stem. He stared at it mournfully for a few moments before leaning forward, as if to talk to it like he had when it hadn't been dying. "Well... maybe if I hang you out somewhere where I can still find sun, you'll dry out nicely?" he asked it hopefully, before leaning over the trunk to pluck the plant off it's tree.

Scented Fruit trotted along, enjoying the dappled sunlight coming through the branches. The sun warmed her hide, even as the brisk air chilled her nose and ears. A dark shape ahead caught her attention and she stopped, surprised. Hm! I didn't expect anyone to be in this area of the swamp lately...I wonder who this is? Just as she was about to call out to the buck ahead, she heard a voice. Is that...him? Whoever is he speaking to? Fragrant looked around, trying to find some other kin, but there was nobody there. Curious, she quietly snuck forward to hear him as he spoke again. As Fragrant got closer, she saw him lean forward before speaking again. Is he talking to....a plant?! How....sweet! She smiled at the buck's light gray back as he pulled the plant off the tree. I like a buck with a kind heart! She sidled over closer towards him, somewhere within the side of his visual range and clopped the ground lightly with one hoof to get his attention. She looked up at the sky, her face an expression of wonder at the clouds, and pretended not to have noticed his presence. A little hard to get never hurt anybody! she joked with herself.

Catch frowned as he heard a hoof click against the ground, glancing momentarily at the doe who had sidled up. He gave her a look of near-confusion, obviously not getting that she had been trying to get his attention.
"...'s this your flower?" he asked, over a mouthful of orchid stem, careful to enunciate, while trying not to hurt the stem any further than it had already been damaged. He looked her up and down - certainly, her greens were similar to the orchid's, and he couldn't be the only kimeti in the swamp who looked after plants. Then again, though, he hadn't seen her in the past few weeks, and it seemed a bit strange that someone who would have taken an interest in such a flower would leave for such a lengthy amount of time.
He looked at her, face expectant as he waited for an answer.

She started at his question, and looked down sharply. She hadn't been treated like that by a buck before! Her glance softened when she saw his bright, teal eyes and how gently he spoke around the orchid in his mouth. But still. Imagine! A buck who was more interested in a pretty flower. Ah well, maybe he wasn't the type to go for does. "Ahh...no, it is not mine. ...What are you doing with it though?" She couldn't help asking...the curiosity overwhelmed her.

"Well, I was caring for it, but it's dying, now. I guess I was... looking for a way to preserve it? At least for a while." Even now, his interest in the flower was starting to fade. He'd held onto as much of the beauty in it's petals and it's silent contentness while it was, but now it was going to die, and there was nothing to be done about it. "But when I really think about it, that probably wouldn't work." He laid the flower down, looking at the relatively tight loop it made from the flower to the rest of the stem. He sighed, slightly saddened by the fact that it was already dying.

She frowned and flicked her tail. How odd, for some kin to be so hung up on the beauty of a flower. It was just as transient as the seasons, and a new one would grow, just as everything else in the swamp moved. Without anything else to talk about, the colorful doe tried to come up with something at least somewhat comforting for the buck to hear. "The only preservation I know of is when some kin dry the flowers. But it is probably too late,...sorry to say." ...that didn't work. Oh well. Fragrant turned away, threw a glance over her shoulder and sniffed, still a little miffed to be brushed off for a flower. "Well I guess I will leave you to your flower then." She hoofed the ground again momentarily, then looked to the sky to see if she could spot her familiar anywhere. At least the bird would pay her heed.

The buck walked up quietly as she turned away, scooping the flower up in his mouth. He watched her walk, catching up with her, as if he was casually walking by. Except he dropped the flower, right when it was in line with her horn.
He smiled brightly at her as she stopped in confusion, and he used her uncertainty to pounce on the words he needed to get out. "I'm sorry, did I make a bad impression? I can be a little tunnelminded at times. My name's Hold the Light, and I'd like to apologize for whatever I did wrong."

She startled as soon as she felt the flower hit the side of her face. Realizing what he had done, she couldn't help a slow smile creep across her face.
Well now. That is a little better at least. She tried to fool herself into staying cool and aloof as her heart melted at his sweet gesture.
"Well, hello, Hold the Light." A soft chuckle escaped her lips, and a shiver ran down her tail. "I'm Scented Fruit. And," she added as an afterthought, "you did just fine."
Just fine, indeed.
