Recently, my mom and I decided to foster four ADORABLE Yorkie mixes. The only problem is that two of the three puppies had parvo. I don't know much about this, only that it is EXTREMELY contagious. I need to know how to tell if the virus is starting to clear up if the treatments were successful? The sickest one is starting to act more like a puppy should. He's perky, playful, a little loud at times, eating well, and pooping regularly.

However, the mother has heartworms, and will have to be seperated from the three babies. She's also getting fixed this week. I only have two crates, and I can't put the littlest one, Maverick, in with Molly and Goose. They're too rambunctious for him, and I don't want them accidentally hurting him. I need to ask if anyone else has had this kind of experience. I need to know how to successfully seperate them without getting my other dog infected with Heartworms.

At the moment, NO other animals are allowed into my room where the dogs are kept. My mom thought that would be safer for Josie (the other dog) and the three cats. We also have been keeping our hands washed and disinfected after playing with the puppies. Is that enough? Or should we be doing more??? Help, please! I am extremely ignorant here! T^T

ok, parvo is really bad, heartworm is bad too, but it isn't contagious unless the dog gets bitten by an infected mosquito, if your other dog has had her parvo shot already that is really good, I hear that putting bags on your feet while you are in the room/house that is infected with it, and then taking them off when you leave is good (to me, it is like imagining that there is like muck all over everything) if all 3 of the pups are together then you should not put them with mom, because she can get parvo too, especially if she hasnt had the shot, if the little pup hasn't been with its siblings, then it should be safe to put it with mom, but I am not completely sure, there are a few others in the guild that are more qualified to tell you more about this stuff, but just so you know, the parvo virus can live in your carpet and yard and things for like 2 years, so you have to be super careful

Well, Angel (the mom) has had all her shots. The puppies haven't had all of them yet because of the treatments, but they should be getting them soon. Angel goes back to get fixed this week, and I'm worried that the puppies could accidentally rip open her stitches. That's really the only reason I want to seperate them.

I have a portable pen that will fit in my room, and I was thinking about putting her in that. Or just letting Angel sleep with me. She's pretty well-behaved.

Also, if you know anyone around Louisiana that would like one of them (except Maverick, my mom wants to keep him) let me know so I can contact the rescue group. 4laugh

I don't know anyone, sorry >.< and I see what you mean, in general, it is a good idea to assume that the shots are not going to work, because SOMETIMES they can fail, and the dog can get sick anyway, what if you put Angel in the playpen, and the little one in her crate, and maybe the crate inside/near the playpen so she can see the pup, you will have to play with him a lot though, as he will be alone

Parvo is SO sososo contagious that honestly, washing your hands is pointless. Because bleach is just about the only thing that can kill parvo. You also should not have a puppy in your house for the next year as the spores will likely remain for even longer. At my clinic we wear gloves and surgical gowns and croc shoes in our isolation room which the puppies NEVER leave. We had an older dog once who was too proper to pee in his cage, we carried him outside and after he pottied we poured bleach on it. After handling the pups, we throw out the gloves and change shoes and throw the clothes in the laundry and wash everything in bleach.

We also give the dogs plasma transfusions and give them medication to prevent nasea and keep their appetite good. So the second the pups stop eating or start vomiting you need to call your vet. You shouldn't take them in unless you call and advise them the dogs have parvo.

How old are the puppies, have they had any vaccinations yet?

Heartworm on the other hand is not contagious in the sense that you MUST have a mosquito infect you with it. So if it's winter and theyir aren't mosquitoes then you don't need to worry about the other dogs getting it. I'm surprised that they are spaying her while she has heartworm though, I would think this increases her anesthetic risk.

I agree, I'm very surprised the vet wants to put her under while she has an active heartworm infection. If it was my dog I would wait until she was well to spay her. Also I agree about the quarantine procedures. When I worked for the vet we had a special room on ANOTHER FLOOR from all the other animals where puppies w/ Parvo were cared for. We had covers for our shoes, gloves special clothes... EVERYTHING had to get washed in HOT water & bleach or ROCCAL. I would suggest changing all your clothes as soon as you leave the room & washing everything, & buy in latex gloves & shoe covers. You might even buy some ROCCAL if you can find it. Vaccines are verry important but they are not 100% so they should not be relied upon to protect uninfected dogs.
