Madison had received a very simple text that morning:

Text

Arrive at Classroom A. Make sure you are well prepared.

Unfortunately, the text didn't say anything else, not even a context for when and why.

It was a simple text indeed, and one that explained nothing. What was she meant to be well-prepared for? A battle? A mission to Halloween? A shopping trip? A Christmas party? Ugh. Madison made a face as she walked across the Deus campus, in proper duty uniform with Kouki already summoned, though the swords were in their scabbards at the moment.

At least it did not say maintenance duty?

It didn't say a lot of things. That's why I don't like it, Madison thought back as she entered the classroom building. Classroom A was beyond familiar by now, and she didn't waste any time hesitating before entering the room, knocking twice on the doorframe to alert whoever might be waiting for her to her presence. "Hello? Madison McKenzie reporting for... duty?"

"You are," Caelius corrected as soon as she had finished her sentence, "Reporting for your rather convenient promotion mission." He gave Madison a calculating look. "I hope you have indeed come prepared, because if you ******** this up I will withhold not only your promotion rights but also your prior mission request."

While it was odd that the Death Hunter was in charge of Madison's mission, it was even stranger that he had, despite all words, considered her proposal at some point in time. Or maybe he was just arbitrarily and rather sadistically whimsical, which really, was not surprising.

"When you are prepared, you will embark a type H golem, and meet me at the designated location, outside the gates of Amityville in Halloween. I will brief you on your promotion mission there." As Caelius made no motion to leave his seat himself, he clearly expected Madison to make the first move, as if to say that the evaluation had already begun.

OOC

- Madison must go to the golem rental thread to roll a golem. Once she is ready, simply read the rp prompt and post HERE

Okay, she was not expecting Caelius. At all. Madison gave him a look rather akin to a deer in headlights for a few seconds, then remembered to breathe properly. "Y-yes sir. Understood, sir."

Was she prepared? Well, if she was going out in a golem, that pretty much ruled out bringing any items with her, so... he must mean mentally, or something? Was there anything she should do or think about? Kouki?

We should go now. Waiting will not help - it will probably just make him angry.

... Probably true. Madison nodded. "I am prepared, sir. I, um, will go... embark right away." That said, she pivoted on one foot and headed briskly back out of the room again, equal parts dread and curiosity warring in her mind.

After either having to ask directions from another Hunter, or checking her cell phone, Madison would find that Examination Room A was actually a very short walk away from the pod chambers: in fact, they were in the same area. Though the series of long hallway doors were unlabeled, there was only one room where the door was half-opened, light partially pouring outside.

Inside 'Examination Room A' was a single table and three sets of chairs, not unlike how the entire Horsemen containment room had been set up. When Mortimer woke up, he would find himself half-slumped against a simple metal chair, neither shackled, nor tied, or anything other than sitting, really, staring at two figures wearing tell-tale white and gold coats.

Caelius gestured to the empty chair across the table from the undead student. "While the Life Division likes to get their hands dirty with these sort of specimens, the Death Division, however, would rather focus on the necessary." He leaned over slightly on his chair, a sadistic sort of half-smile playing on his features. "Assuming that information is the key currency in this exercise, how much can you repay me for everything you owe, Madison?"

OOC

- Mortimer is free to move around, walk, attack even, though he might be feeling a little groggy from the after-effects of the attack. If he wishes to attack, he can do so, but may only roll melee (make sure to quote your target), as there is something odd about the room that suppresses his Fear. Make sure to post his final HP value at the bottom, though if he dissipates, this might be the end of him, rather permanently.
- Madison is free to do anything in the room, including a weapon attack (simply roll as needed, offensive OR defensive rolls), but, Caelius is asking for information, and being of course, unspecific as to what exactly he is looking for (though its best for the trainee to follow her own words and proposals as best as she can).

(( Le entering! ))

"Graa . . ."

It was an involuntary moan, the sound of air passing through lips that happened to voice it. Undead didn't need to breathe exactly, but that didn't mean they couldn't do it subconsciously - especially when you hung around living students.

Students. Ghoul. "C-Ca . . . li . . ."

His mind slowly began to whir as if it were an old computer being forced to turn on. Fingers twitched, toes curled, eyes flutter open. And then forced closed. Why so bright in here aagaajgahgaga. The zombie covered his eyes and tried again, squinting until his sight adjusted to . . . wherever the heck he was. Also his chair was hard and cold.

He could eventually identify two figures against the bland whiteness, and a voice that was speaking. A rather familiar voice that was speaking. His eyes flew open. A non-beating heart grew cold.

Hunters.

Mortimer's other hand came up to fix his glasses, at which point he realized with some confusion that he was not shackled in the least. All that was separating them was a table. And probably hidden weapons.

Was this a mistake or a ploy? No, even Mort could assume the latter . . . But why? Was it because they thought him a slow, stupid zombie?

Well they were somewhat right, but still.

"Wh-Wh-Wh-" His lips felt numb, and it certainly didn't help that half of them were stitched. "Wh-Where'sss . . . Ca-Ca-Callio . . ."

Madison was still inwardly fuming at herself when she woke up and let herself out of the pod. How could she have forgotten something so basic?! At least Caelius was letting her go through to the next part of the mission, whatever that was... though she was pretty sure she knew, remembering her own bold words.

We can break him. He is weak, Kouki said, confidently, as Madison looked up the location of the examination room on her phone. We will help you.

Thanks... let me know if I'm about to say something stupid. She headed towards the room in question, eyes narrowed in thought. Kouki was right - the freak they'd picked up was a weak creature. Unfortunately, if he really had only been around for a month, then there was a limit to how much the damn thing would know...

Well. She'd do what she could.

When she entered the room, the freak was just... there. Sitting on a chair, still out, not restrained or anything. And there was Caelius, of course... saying the expected. She had a debt. She had to perform.

Time to make the little freak dance.

As the freak woke up, groggy and slow, Madison sat down on the indicated chair. She looked casual, even bored, but Kouki was summoned, the swords' weight reassuring around her waist. "Good morning," she said, her voice low and dangerous, sounding very different from Calliope's more bubbly, anxious tones. "Your little girlfriend is locked up tight~ for her sake, you'd better answer my questions. If I leave this room, it'll be to cut off one of her arms. And then the other one. And we can go from there. And if you come after me... you'll find everything you do will be done right back to her."

She paused to let that sink in.

"So. Tell me~ what happened after you chased Red into the forest? You did chase her, didn't you? Always following your precious professor, even though she led you right to us?"

Morning? Morning? How long had he been there? Mort panicked a little as a new Hunter entered the room, her almost stoic expression emphasizing just how little she cared about Calliope's situation. Yes indeed, Mort was yet again putting his situation lower on the priority list.

He really needed to sort that out, by the way.

Rather than, say, glaring at the threat, the zombie looked paler in fear. Had he been able to sweat, he would have. It didn't help that his brain, which was usually buzzing with electricity, was only humming softly instead - subdued somehow. Heck, his entire body felt a little heavy, like it had been in the net. What was this technology?

Nonetheless, the Hunter ghoul's last sentence made him contort cold fingers into loose fists. "C-Cut me n'stead," Mort tried to bargain, swallowing hard. "N-N-Not hurt her. Or C-Calli let go. Or show you h-have her."

For all he knew, it was a ploy. He had to believe it was a ploy. But what if . . . No, the gorgon couldn't have been working for them, could she . . .?

"I won't hurt her~ but you have to tell me what I want to hear. It's up to you if you want to save her or not." Madison grinned, the smile cruel and sharp-edged. "Just a few simple questions and she goes free... you'll be a hero. Her hero. Now." She straightened, the casual air gone entirely now.

"What happened after you went into the forest? You were caught, weren't you? Did you see them walk past? The Horsemen?"

That was the key word, wasn't it: hero. But it sounded so wrong coming out of that cold smile, so perverted from the original meaning. What did the Hunter care?

Mort pondered what it meant to really be heroic as he mumbled, "Yes, s-saw them." Would being truly courageous mean answering their every question? Or perhaps he needed to initiate some action . . . "Why care? Y-You were there." Well he assumed so at least; the fake students had seemed so numerous.

"Hmm, was I? I was told there were only students there~ students in red cloaks. Have you ever worn one of those cloaks? I bet you have. Being part of a big secret is almost like being a hero, isn't it? Wearing a cloak, defying the Boogeymen... being in a revolution." This was a gamble, but she thought she'd figured out the freak's type. Nerdy. Lived in a world inside his own head. Liked to emulate the stories he loved. She'd met plenty of humans who were just like that.

The hero thing, of course, might lead him to doing something stupid in here. She watched him carefully. "What did you do when you wore the red cloak?"

How spot on Madison was. The more she spoke, the tighter Mortimer's fists grew. And indeed, the more he spoke in a stronger tone. "Y-Yeah, wore it," he stated almost proudly, actually attempting eye contact now. "Wore for f-funeral. W-Wore for mourning. Have f-feelings, Hunter: have s-s-sad, have happy, h-have angry. Did not know?"

Mort wasn't sure what he was going for there: maybe if he looked less like an enemy, it would make the human think for a second that maybe they weren't all bad guys.

Or maybe he was just talking more because he didn't like being so easily read.

Awww, he was trying to pretend he was a person. How cute. "Of course. It made you angry when the Boogeymen didn't take you seriously, didn't it? They made fun of you. They said you were all lying and all crazy." Oh, this was fun.

... But she wasn't sure how much actual information it was getting her. When he'd said he'd only been around for a month, she should've tried to go after someone else... ugh. How much of use was there in that rotting head? "And the Horsemen - they were big heroes. So strong, so powerful... and then they walked past all of you, right? Just walked past without helping and went with the Hunters."

"Don't you think that's weird?" She smiled, more genuinely now.

He did not like where this was going, no no no . . . She wasn't possibly suggesting - "Horseman a-are for us side," Mortimer stated with a frown. "C-Call us weak, but help us." He still could remember vividly how one of the ghouls had helped taken the net off him, had assured him that everything was going to be alright. And even further back then that, at the Haunted House, where another one had pushed him back to initiate her own attack against the group that had defended the tent where the captured students laid.

"Am weak," Mort then added shamefully, but still with that defiant frown. "Is why here . . . B-But Boogies will learn. Just like l-learned lots in month at school." Shakily, the zombie began to push himself into a standing position, both hands curled upon the table top. "Horsemen n-not only big heroes there."

"I talked to Cymbeline. You know, Famine? She said you all looked really cute, all wrapped up like presents in those nets. She laughed about it." Madison actually wasn't lying, not this time. "It's always good to talk with friends, isn't it?"

Then the freak shifted. Madison stayed where she was, meeting his gaze without flinching. "I'm sure they will~ how are you going to tell them, though? They don't believe you. They think you're all crazy. ... Are you sure you aren't crazy?"
