It was a normal day. Just another ride though the quad. Class had ended for some people, and frankly, it had ended for me. I shouldered my backpack and mounted my bike, kicking off the curb viciously to express my dissent with my work for the night. Black bag loaded on my back, I rode hard, standing slightly on my pedals to just gain speed. At least, I thought I'd be home soon. Then I saw them. A mound of greyscale tents pitched in the quad. What the-. I braked hard and was rewarded with numerous swears from passing students, who were swerving to avoid me. Checking over my shoulder, I managed to get out of the stream of traffic and over to the curb once more. Walking my bike, I noticed that a number of oddly hued...people, had occupied the quad. This is ridiculous, I though, and I pulled out my cell phone and called the main office. A few minutes later, I was rewarded with an announcement over the P.A:

"Would those occupying the quad kindly leave? Your presence is a hazard to the learning environment and I would appreciate it if you exited the premises. Thank you."

That was the voice of our chancellor, they had to leave. The mass of "people" did nothing to move away. Fail.

Ugh. I turned away in disgust and pedaled out to the curb, furious with those refusing to submit to authority. Back in my room, I fumed, finishing my homework in record time and deciding to google search this group of trouble makers. Known as "Zero Bot Army", they were occupying the quad until changes were made. They demanded changes to the school meal plan for the coming Winter: no sugary foods. No more delicacies from the cafeteria, no more freshly made cookies during late night meals for those dining from 10 to midnight. No more sugar, period. "No more sugar? How stupid can they get? Don't they realize that 99% of the world needs sugar? Next thing you know, they'll be demanding a strike!" I fumed, slamming my laptop closed and climbing into my bed, determined to see these troublemakers off the campus.

I decided to scope the situation out. It was Friday, and my classes had ended early. Apparently, the chancellor had no luck with removing the Zero Bot Army, so it was time to make another call. This time, I would strike fear into her, and force her to be stricter.

"Hello? Yes, I'm a student here and I'm currently camping in the quad. I just rolled my ankle and I was wondering if the school would be held accountable to take care of me? No? No, it's not okay that I'm here? Well, I have a point to make, so I'll just call my mom to get my doctor to come here. Thank you."

I shut the phone with a grim smile. The chancellor responded with another message over the P.A shortly after.

"Attention those in the quad: again, I must implore you to leave the quad. With the weekend coming, no buildings or facilities will be open for your use, and school policy demands that I be responsible for the wellfare of the students under my jurisdiction. I implore you to leave the campus ground and return to your homes. Thank you."

This time I was rewarded with body movement and a taking down of...colored tents? I hadn't noticed the incorporation of real people into this dumb movement, but to each their own. 7 people, real people, left the quad. Slow and steady, I thought, wheeling away from the quad. Slow and steady wins the race.

I left the campus for the weekend, determined to figure out a way to combat this rebellion. Protesting was a peaceful thing, but to protest this ridiculous idea was absurd. No sugar? People needed sugar, and that's all there was too it. I had to get to the root of this thing, find out who was leading this "army". They didn't even do anything. Just sat there right smack dab in the middle of the quad, being passively annoying in the form of an eyesore to all those who saw them. I would find a way to win this. This was war.

I decided I would take a tactical route and call in a real form of enforcement. The chancellor just wasn't doing anything to clear the masses. Typical of someone in power: be as polite as you can without upsetting anyone. All this developed was a lack of backbone. I called the campus police, claiming that the Zero Bot Army had assaulted me in some way. Harassment, physical threats, whatever it took to get the law involved. Surely the bots would have to respect real power.

The cops came and decided that the encampment was hazardous to student life on campus and decided to make examples of a number of tents near them, arresting and detaining the residents. Finally, they were being cleared actively.

I was smirking, slowly counting the seconds that went by as I figured it would take no longer than five minutes for the rest of the encampment to either all be arrested or packed up and leaving. Movement was stirring all across the tents, and numerous bots stepped out, viewing their detained comrades. The cops were talking to the arrested bots though, and weren't watching the large group of free bots. And then all the free bots moved together, and I couldn't believe my eyes. They surrounded the cops, encircling them with their bodies. They all turned and sat simultaneously, backs to the cops and arms linked between each other. By this time a number of students had come to see what the fuss was all about, and a large crowd had started chanting about free rights for all sentient beings, for all forms of life. I rushed over, trying to move in front of the crowd to watch the cops. This couldn't happen, the law couldn't be refused. The cops began trying to shout down the crowd, to drown out the ridiculous antics of these free speaking people. I attempted to shout them down too, but I was merely one voice.

I was frantic, and somehow the notion of not having any sugar for the Winter season brought serious misgivings to my frame. I panicked, and pulled my phone out, once again punching in three numbers: 9-1-1. By the time the operator picked up, the cops had started talking amongst themselves, pulling out their radios and communicating with someone on the other end.

"Hello? There's an emergency in the quad. The cops here are being held captive by the campers and are demanding the release of those arrested. The crowd is getting aggressive, please send help!"

In my haste I naturally fixed the facts to appeal to a response I needed. Within ten minutes, another squad car showed up, and drove down the length of the quad. The crowd immediately opened up, as the car showed no signs of slowing. The circle of Zero's Bot Army watched the car's progression fearfully, some of them breaking chain and running away, earning angry reproaches from the crowd and their brethren who immediately closed the gap, which in turn narrowed the space for the cops. Something drastic needed to be done soon, or the mob would win, and that would bring drastic problems to our future.

The incoming cop car stopped next to the circle, literally right in front of them, and out came a number of officers, equipped with rubber-dispensing guns and riot shields. Madness was erupting on the quad as the crowd began to yell at the cops over the fact that the tents were a peaceful rally, a violent-free protest, well within their rights. The circle itself was unrelenting in its determination to stay together, refusing to come apart when cops pulled at them or informed them of their violation of penal codes. Riot shields were taken up and used to hold the crowd back from the circle, while pepperspray cans were being readied for use inside it. I didn't see the point of this as the backs of the bots were to the cops inside the circle. Somehow, the pepperspray needed to be shot at the front of the bots and their attention to their determination needed to be broken. I scanned the area, and my eyes settled on the squad car. No cops were in it, and it was a car, so an alarm should go off if the car was disturbed. I backed out of the crowd and moved to it, then decided against it and edged back to the outer layer of the crowd. Then, weighing my backpack in one hand, and checking quickly over my shoulder, I threw my backpack at the car and moved in the other direction around the circle. I was rewarded with a thud and an immediate response from the automobile's alarm system, setting off the siren. I broke through the crowd in time to see the bots all raising their hands to their ears, causing the circle to teeter backwards as the motion rocked all the bot's center of mass up and back, resulting in a linked circle of bots on their backs, palms to their ears. The cops reacted defensively, spraying the movement and then lunging on the downed bots, spraying them twice for good measure. The crowd dispersed itself, fearful of the pepperspray and annoyed with the noise. In the hubbub, I retrieved my backpack and walked away, smug with satisfaction: I had beaten the Zero Bot Army.

The following day, I watched in horror as the television played interview after interview of the event, all claiming that the police had been out of line, that the chancellor should resign, and that the protesters now involved real students, all clamoring for media attention. With disgust, I watched as reporter after reporter talked about a press conference the tonight, to happen on campus from the chancellor herself. Talk of a man named Zero flitted here and there in each report, inside stories claiming his being to be the mastermind behind the quad encampment. No concrete data existed on him though, so the media just threw the name about, adding mystery to the mayhem. I turned the screen off and sat quietly, taking in this new information. There was a mastermind behind this ploy, and whoever they were called for a removal of all sugar. The encampment was a ruse, an act to draw guilable students in for support. Which meant that their real first step would happen tonight. I had to get to the bottom of this, and with the police and the chancellor under heavy fire from the media, I was on my own from here on out.

I made it just in time to see the start of the congregation form outside Dwindle, the building where the conference was scheduled to have been held. Whispers here and there of the chancellor refusing to admit students and cancelling the conference entirely swept through the crowd and suddenly more chanting and rousing of "solidarity" against violent retaliation to peaceful protesting erupted. A number of oddly misshapen beings were in the shadow of the building, standing still in two lines. The crowd clamored around them, complimenting them on their dedication to the cause in dressing up so grotesquely and in their silent protesting. The people then responded by announcing a following of the silent beings' actions: to surround the building until the chancellor came out. In minutes, the building was surrounded, and students were back to chanting their protests. I lingered around the lines with other looky loos who had heard all the commotion. Somehow, I had to start removing these, zombies, and diminish their number to decrease the "support" they were giving the crowd. I began talking loudly behind them, solely for them to hear.

"Hey, what if she comes out the back? We should cover the building's 2nd entrance!"

A number of them stirred and their disgusting yellow heads turned my way, showing their affirmation to my thought. I gestured for them to follow and took them around the building, leading them to one connected to Dwindle, but not in any way joined by the inside hallways.

"I'll go get more people! We'll have her here all night!"

I rushed back and checked at the corner, relieved to see the zombies standing resolutely outside the entrance way to the building I had left them at. United they stand, separated they fall. I thought, pleased with my work.

I doubled back, making it look like I was just getting to Dwindle. I noticed a number of regular students had filled in the space I had made by removing the zombies. I shook my head, knowing that at least the people had the potential to listen to reason. I passed by students of all different backgrounds, so I wasn't going to be able to pull out a single group again like I had with the zombies, and I wasn't willing to try the same thing twice in case the people went to find those I had taken away and bring them back. There wasn't much I could do, and it was getting late. I decided to appeal to the weather. It was chilling, as was the norm with where we were as it approached night. I stood behind a group of people standing away from the main entrance and hunched my shoulders, bringing my arms in close and dropping my head.

"Man, it's so cold. What's the point of waiting out here? She could just stay in there all night and make us suffer. I think we should just do this again in the day time."

The group turned to me briefly and nodded at me, but then just resumed their waiting, abruptly turning their backs to me. I walked away, upset with the ridiculousness of these normal people. They might as well be zombies.

I wrung my hands together, the frustration getting the best of me. I wanted to quit, to just go back to my room and sleep. But the thought of giving up sugar revived my drive and I resumed brewing up ideas, anything that would disperse this crowd. They were mostly college kids, just fighting against authority. Just like me, they were upset with the cold, and being away from their laptops and hungry...hungry? I hadn't even realized that I hadn't eated since breakfast this morning. Food. Any college kid would turn their attention away from any event at the prospects of food. I paced outside the circle, slowly as to not attract any unwanted attention. Where did I know that was open this late? Something any kid would go for. Airtable. They boasted a twenty-four hour over, with free delivery for over thirty dollars of only single topped pizzas. I smiled, knowing this would work and began making rounds, talking about the prospects of bringing pizza back and staying the night. They all agreed, heartily pitching in dollar amount after dollar amount to get some grub. A number of them wanted the zombies to pick it up so that was pictures could be taken and documented for the next television interview. I gleefully stepped back, taking two birds with one stone: a fewer number of the adamant zombies remained, and a number of vocal supports had gone too. Hopefully, I could remove the rest of the crowd by the time 40 pizzas were done being made. I had to work quickly.

I was running out of things to disperse the crowd with. I had already removed some zombies with a fake "backdoor", a number of other people had left to get pizza, which meant that somehow, I had to get the rest of the crowd over this sit-in and back to their dorms. I was squatting behind the circle, blowing warm air into my hands. Think, think, think, think. I really had to use the restroom, and people kept moving back and forth to stay warm. But I never heard anything about a bathroom. The nearest bathroom I knew was in the lecture hall down the block. I stood slowly, careful not to aggrivate my own bladder, and proceeded to ask the zombies for the bathroom, stating that they would know from having been there the longest. They stood, resolute and silent, and someone next to them heard me and pointed out the lit hallway to the teacher's lounge behind Dwight, explaining to me that a janitor who was supportive of our cause had opened it up for us. So much for that plan I thought, proceeding into the Men's Room.

As I returned from the bathroom, I raked my brain for another reason, another excuse to take people away from this scene. I walked into a group, quietly keeping to myself. I started thinking about all this chanting while the chancellor sat in Dwindle, not cold, not tired, not without her personal accents. I had gotten there after the crowd had started forming, but not in any of the hours that I had been here had I seen her once. This took on a life of its own, and I realized I thought she was there because everyone else thought she was there. What if she had left before? Just because she hadn't been willing to admit students, didn't necessarily mean she was still there. I smiled, hoping that many others would hit upon this uncertainty and leave. I moved to where more people would hear me.

"What if she's not even there anymore? What if she left before we got here?"

A lot of people heard me and muttering followed my questions, but no one left. Ugh.

Nothing seemed to stir them from their course of action. They were set to stay here and that was it. Just like children, unless someone was above them telling them what to do, they thought that whatever they were doing was okay. So, who above them as college adults could tell them what to do? The chancellor, assuming she was still in Dwindle, wasn't going to be willing to tell them anything from fear of being shouted down and or attacked. Parents were out of the question, and this crowd wasn't going to adhear to another student telling them that their efforts were ridiculous. So, would the students listen to cops again? It was hard to say. I weighed the situation, considering the notion of just the idea of cops coming. Would that work? What did I have to lose?

"I heard cops are coming! I heard they're coming to bail her out!"

This time my statements were met with fearful eyes, and a quick rumble through the crowd, many of them deciding to leave. Some of the zombies turned, confused about all the noises, and followed the numerous groups leaving. I laughed silently to myself. It seems they weren't so difficult to deal with after all.

So, it was the idea that scared them more, not the actual presence give or take. They were all people with all their fears, after all. So now the remainder of the crowd was seen to me as cold, hungry, unafraid of cops and willing to spend the night come storm or shower...Shower? What if it rained? The idea of rain, just like the idea of cops coming, cuold work. I had to try everything, anything. There was no counter-protest, no authoritative support. There was just me and my voice, appealing to the individual fears and hesitancies that kept people from staying here. Aside from directly starting a fire, I could keep this up all night. And I was smart about it, moving from pack to pack, never staying long enough for people to recognize me. Trouble was, with fewer and fewer people staying, I was getting easier and easier to notice doing my rounds. This had to be wrapped up soon.

"What if it starts to rain? I heard forecasts saying winds will bring the rain to us from the shore."

People looked up, and decided that my questions had reason behind them, so they hugged the building's exterior, effectively being protected from the incoming "rain" by the roof. Fail much? I asked myself, realizing that this would've been the immediate reaction and questioning why I didn't make that connection in the first place.

It was really late. A little bit into the next calendar day. I thought about just returning to my bed for a few hours before my next class, but the thought of letting these ridiculous antics win for the night gave me a surge of support to see my goals through. Where was the pizza? They probably bailed. No one else questioned this, and I was shocked. How had these people not realized that they had given up the money? Or that they hadn't eaten for hours? I decided once more to voice myself.

"Where is our food man? I'm tired, and hungry. The people who left haven't been back for hours, which means that they've decided to tuck in for the night after eating the pizza that we orded. So now we've been sitting out here with no food and no rest while she's been in there, warm and probably with a good amount of snacks or food to get her through the night."

People grouped together around me, beginning to voice the same sentiments. One of the vocal supports stepped forward, shaking his head.

"Look guys. We may be suffering out here, but we've got to stand up for what is right. She's making us suffer, she has to pay. I was just thinking the same thing: we haven't eaten, and we haven't slept. This guy's right, let's end this. Let's get her out here!"

He ended his speech with a fist pump, and the crowd ate it up. Chanting began, demading her to exit and face all of us for making us wait without food and sleep. Lights went on in Dwight and this only further fueled the crowd, now knowing that she was in there. I backed out, stepping to the edges of the rally. Brilliant move Einstein.
