Her backpack was too heavy to carry around her shoulders. It was dragging along the grond, gathering a path of snow around it. The snow in question was fathering her backpack as it fell from the sky in flurries. Her brown hair was sprinkled with the flakes as well, and they stuck to her eyelashes. Minny was grinning foolishly, pulling her backpack along. Her friend Matt's parents had been very generous in their donation of food stuffs, tossing in a few cans of fruit cocktail, a couple pouches of instant potatoes, and at least three cans of soups. Adding that to their neighbor's contribution had stuffed her tiny backpack full, so she was on her way to drop off the stuff before continuing on her way.
Her mother was impressed with her determination; Minny rarely had this kind of focus for something, especially when there were Christmas presents under the tree to inspect, and snowmen to be made. Maya had dropped off the first box, and the second, and then a third before she realized that Minny was determined to get as much stuff out of the people of Destiny City as possible. And with school out for winter break, she had plenty of time to do so.
So Minny trudged through snow and asked people for food, using her wily childish ways more than once.
In truth Minny wasn't thinking about the reason they were collecting the food, at least not in a usual way. In her mind, she was a hero, the lone escaper from a village that had been trapped in their valley by a mudslide. It was onyl good fortune that she had been out picking flowers from teh valley rim when it happened. But now her fellow villagers were trapped, and quickly running out of food. So it was up to Miiny to save them, one can of corn at a time.
Our Hero continued on her way when another villager from another town came upon her. earmuffs sat against two buns, one on each side of her head. Blue eyes peeked out from behind the red and green scarf that wrapped around her neck and fell down almost past the white peacoat. She wasn't very tall, dashing Our Hero's thoughts that she was a bandit. Instead she looked at the backpack in the snow and asked "What do you have in there, gold?"
Suspicions were immediately roused, and she said "No it's not gold! It's food. I'm helping those who can't get it themselves." The blonde girl nodded in comprehension, saying "Oh so your helping with the food bank?"
Our Hero shook her head, saying "It's not a food bank. It's a village trapped by a mudslide. I'm the only one who got out. So I have to help them."
Light appeared behind the older girl's eyes as she realized the theme. "Oh I see." She said solumnly, putting her hands in her armpits for warmth. "Well, it seems you have plundered too much food to carry. May I assist you? Though you will have to lead the way to your valley, for I am not sure which you speak of."
It was Minny's turn to light up. This girl was playing her game! Our Hero nodded and held out the backpack's strap to the girl. "I would appreciate the help Miss. My name is Minny."
The older girl bowed, saying "Minny the Helpful. I am Castille." She grabbed the backpack, hoisting it onto her back with a groan. "Goodness you've got quite the haul!"
They walked for a few minutes, chatting about the weather and how much food she had gathered for her "village", and what she did in school. When they found Minny's house, Castille smiled, saying "Well, we made it. This is where you are gathering at all right?"
"Yep!" Minny said, running to open the door. Her mother and father were quite surprised to find a teenager lugging a tiny backpack full of food in their home. While her father put the stuff into a box to be delivered the next day, Maya gave Castille a bag of cookies. Minny eyed them jealously. "Thank you for helping her. She gets so enthusiactic sometimes I think she forgets she can only carry so much."
Castille laughed and gave Minny a wink. "Nah, I think she is just happy to help. If you ever need another pack mule, let me know. I'd be happy to help."
Minny watched form the window as Castille exited the house and walked down the drive, pausing to wave to the girl win the window. She waved back eagerly and then set about counting her donations.
