Cecily Hale
sixteen
supported by her father, a merchant; Cecily gardens

quiet*reflective*listener*dependent*charitable
Cecily is a quiet girl, much like the flowers she cares for. If it grows, she adores it, be it weeds or thorns or flowers. She enjoys talking to her flowers or humming quietly to them. Little wreathes will often be left outside her doorway for the spirits; she also enjoys leaving them on others’ doorsteps to brighten their day. She’s a people-pleaser, and it almost physically pains her to say no. Easily manipulated because of this trait, Cecily doesn’t realize that her own nature can be a bit manipulative, with her open smile and beseeching eyes.

The goings-on of her area, be it Palisade or Oldcastle or her seaside town, are not a mystery to Cecily; she listens intently to everything around her, and amasses vast amounts of information about the people. She will know almost everyone on town, who their children are, who their friends are, and what they like to do, all without ever having spoken to them. Her own silence makes her practically invisible, but Cecily loves to chat with anyone.

appearance
Cecily is a tiny girl, inherited from her mother. She is a very pale tan, enough to set her apart from the doll-like whites of Palisade women. However, her deep auburn hair succeeds in making her appear paler; it is often plaited so one rarely sees the soft waves of Cecily's hair. Her face is an oval, with a mouth that always looks like she's about to smile; in fact, her default expression is a soft, attentive smile. Her round eyes are a mix of blue and green, and which is more dominate depends on the color she wears. Cecily is very plain in her dress and appearance, all the better to blend into the crowd.

background
Cecily grew up with her mother in a cottage near the Iron Sea. Her father was a wealthy merchant, settled in Palisade. He sent his wife to his sea-house for her illness, but secretly he was also ashamed of his wife, who was a believer of the Old Ways, despite being the daughter of a merchant herself.

At age fourteen, Cecily's mother dies. The teen is shuffled off to her father, who had planned to take the girl at sixteen and have her married off. His plans interrupted he hires tutors and otherwise ignores his daughter.

When she turned sixteen Cecily finds herself drawn to Oldcastle; the town had always fascinated her with its adherence to the Old Ways and it started to become almost an obsession. She had already gained a bit of a reputation for her oddity amongst the circles her father frequented, but it grew exponentially with her new obsession. Her father is planning a wedding to a wealthy merchant’s daughter; everything needs to be precisely arranged and last-minute negotiations over the contract had to happen. So he sends her off to Oldcastle to work it out of her system, with a few servants to ensure her safety.

In Oldcastle Cecily finds herself enchanted and feeling calm and centered for the first time since her mother died. She understands these people, their superstitions and values. Her father had bought a small house for her stay (since he planned for her to be there until the wedding; a full six months), and Cecily takes to the place happily, growing a large and abundant garden.

Phlox is the wildfire to Cecily's garden - he can't stay still, and he has to be seen. He's mischievous but sweet, always trying to get Cecily to do what he wants, like run through the town or even just see a show. His boisterous attitude attracts attention, something he relishes - Cecily's not sure how to handle the people, though she loves the children. His fiery temper can cause problems because of what he perceives as insulting, which can be anything, depending on the day. He is often dressed in wreathes of flowers.

*will be male
*more outgoing than Cecily, confident; a quick temper
*parts the crowd for Cecily, draws attention to her
*attracts children, which delights Cecily
*often dressed in flowers

She’s arranging flowers when it starts, nimble fingers carefully brushing the petals of an exuberant dahlia under the prickly pink daisy. Her fingers don’t waver, but the smile drops from her face to let out a soundless sigh. A part of Cecily, a fleeting part, is mildly irritated at this odd longing to wander off into the unknown – after all, hadn’t this peculiar feeling already brought her to Oldcastle, wasn’t that unknown enough? But irritation is not part of Cecily’s make-up, and the feeling flees quickly and she acknowledges with a soft smile, setting the lily on top of the daisy and nestling a radiant purple peony next to the arrangement, that if she’d gotten Oldcastle out of the deal, the feeling could not be bad at all. Her thoughts are arranged like her bouquet, mentally cataloging and taking stock of what she will need, what needs to be done, as quickly and easily as her hands position her exuberant flower arrangement.

Cecily brings her hands down and brushes them off against the pale green apron, stepping back to admire the wild, chaotic arrangement – it’s quite unlike anything she’s ever done, a far cry from her elegantly swirling assemblies. The colors don’t totally go together, but as her eyes wander over it with a sense of satisfaction. The glass vase is carried to the entryway of her small cottage and settled into pride of place before the door.

Soft humming fills the small cottage as Cecily bustles around, putting a few apples in a thick canvas bag, then a bottle, a coat, a few other things she feels that she might need. The bag settles across her body, thumping against her leg comfortingly, and she knows no one will take note of the bag since she often uses it going about the town. Her quick hands pen a note to her babysitter (though lord knows Eliza dislikes being called that, but Cecily will call the woman what she is). It says nothing about a trip, no – what it says is that she, Cecily will be changing her hours a bit for the next few days, staying up later in order to catch the blooming of some of her lilies and ensure that they’d adapted to Oldcastle, and not to worry if Eliza doesn’t catch sight of her – Eliza won’t really care too much. Eyeing the note with a pleased eye, Cecily spares a moment to wonder when she became so devious. The cream paper settles nicely in her wild bouquet, almost like Cecily herself as she steps out into the bustling evening crowd.

...more to be added...
