Minny had a hold of her mother's hand, skipping along next to her down the sidewalk. Her yellow snow boots splashed in the melted snow and she hummed a Christmas tune. There was a festive red and green box in her hair, and her puffy jacket had snowflakes on it. She had picked out her outfit all by herself. She was quite proud.
"Minny stop jostling me." She mother said, trying to hold her arm straight. A couple bags of groceries were pressed into her side, and a bag of pasta hung dangerously close to falling into the snow. Minny immediately stopped bouncing, letting her arm fall limp in her mom's grasp. She amused herself with counting the steps it took to get to the next block. When that bored her, she twisted around, looking at the people behind her. But when she started to trip, her attention went back in front of her, and someone in a bright green vest caught her attention.
He was hanging up a large piece of paper up on the Community center bulletin board with a tack. She pulled on her mom's arm, saying "Stop, stop stop! I want to read that!" Her mom paused, reading along as well. It was an advertising for the food bank, and the charity drive they were holding. Underneath the scrawling writing there was a small box that had applications for people to fill out. Minny picked one up, turning to her mother and asking "Oh Mom can I do this? I really want to!" She offered the tall women a sweet smile, pouting her lip just slightly.
The face worked. Her mother sighed and smiled, taking a piece of paper as well.
"I think the food drive is a wonderful idea." she said, struggling a bit before pulling a pen out of her pocket. She handed a bag of food to Minny, who began to appraise the items inside for things they could donate. Her mom caught the look and offered a warning glance, as if to say Don't even think about it. Minny noticed and smiled innocently, waiting for the pen so she too could fill out the form. Excitement bubbled in her stomach, and she wanted to jump about and sing. But the heavy bag of groceries prevented her from moving much, so she settled for bouncing from one leg to another impatiently.
When it was her turn, she scrawled her information across the page, going over the lines in a couple spots with squiggled letters. Then they both dropped the papers in the box and started to walk away. Minny's mind raced with ideas on how to come up with food. Oh she would go to all the neighbors! And ask the kids at school! And maybe....
She wasn't bored the rest of the way home.
