Lt. Zippeite was used to being largely ineffectual, although he was learning his way around. More and more of his time was marginalized in favor of energy gathering and making sure to consistently meet his quota.
Now was one of those times. His day off for Thanksgiving was only half a blessing. His parents alternated holidays now, and his dad got Thanksgiving. Why, he didn't know. He could only picture the entire event being weird and awkward as him, his dad, and his brother shared mediocre food in uncomfortable silence. So a-patrolling he did go.
It had been a good night. The stragglers that were out and about on Thanksgiving evening were usually not a bunch with a lot of fight in them, demographically speaking.
But there was still a sort of emptiness. It was a family holiday and here he was, working his butt off, collecting energy, and snacking on cheetoes, alone. He didn't even feel the need to take along a buddy. He couldn't bother the few officers he knew for company, it didn't feel right. And in all this, he found himself gravitating towards his cousin's house. He'd just glance in the window, he told himself, just for a minute. His aunt and uncle were probably having a rough time of it. Kail was missing, along with a handful of others all over Destiny City, and he felt like he should check on them.
Missing persons weren't anything new here, he knew, but he never thought someone in his family would fall under that category.
Hood pulled up and weapon clipped to his belt, Zippeite crept along the residence, but before he even managed one stalkery window glance, he caught a glimpse of very pink fur.
Yeah, he was allergic to cats, but there was still something about animals. Something novel and unexperienced, and it led him to call out, "Hey, kitty!" and dig around for a cheeto with every intention of trying to lure it over.

Kail was largely still in the 'freak-out' stage. This went against anything, and indeed, everything, he had ever known. He kept telling himself it was a dream, nothing but a dream. He had sat obstinately outside, despite the fact he was bone-deep cold and shivering. Watched his Dad panic and panic, and then finally call his mother, who had been busy at some social function. She'd denied the call for a while until his father had called Richard as well, and then she finally picked up the call with a whining tone of voice. His father had screamed at her. Kail didn't think he'd seen his father scream before but this was definitely screaming. Full of anger and rage and hurt. He'd seen Daddy cry, but this was worse. He was screaming down the phone at her. Screaming horrible things - but true things. Kail had curled up. His tail was pretty good for warmth.
Not now, though. He was bone cold and he was done crying, instead just sitting curled up in an almost fugue-like state. His eyes were dull as he sat watching through the window his father sitting, looking as lost as he felt, as Richard rang the police desperately and Mother tried to organise some kind of search.
It couldn't be real.
"Hey, Kitty!"
Kail looked up, and his face (muzzle?) scrunched up all over again and he spoke with a feline wail of sadness. It may have been sinking in that this might not be a dream.
"I'm not a caaaaaaaaaat!"

Zippeite's expression just dropped. The cat spoke. The cat spoke! And now that it had, he did notice the little star mark on it's forehead. This was an alien cat!
He knew they existed, and he knew there were some on the side of the Negaverse, but he still didn't find them very trustworthy, not to mention he'd never gotten the opportunity to speak with one.
He grabbed his lightsaber and extended it to point at the poor feline. "Alright cat, who are you and why are outside this house?" He demanded with his most threatening expression, which wasn't that threatening, but still.

It was plenty threatening enough. Kail couldn't really bring up enough fear to be scared though, sort of exhausted from being scared all day, so he got angry instead. Kail wasn't particularly intimidating as a cat or a human (Pink hair-fur tended to do that to you), but it was certainly more impressive as a cat, considering he puffed up to about three times his size and his tail was impressively bushy. And the hissing was certainly more intimidating than tears. He didn't move so much though, other than to gently (in fact, feeble was probably a better description) swat at Zippeite's lightsaber. (Moving as a cat was far more difficult than it seemed.)
"It's my house! Okay! So you and your s-s-s-s-s-s"
He drew in a shaky breath to stop his stuttering.
" s-sstupid terrorist stuff that probably turned me into a cat in the ff-f-f-ffirst place, c-c-can go awa--aaaaaaaay!"
The last word had trailed off into another one of those loud, caterwauling wails.

The corner's of Zippeite's mouth stretched and turned down in an exaggerated frown. His house? Suddenly the green eyes and pink fur and the voice all sort of allowed themselves to be pieced together in his mind and associated with the awkward kid from the hardware store.
Kail was a cat.
"Oh ********," He groaned and retracted his lightsaber, putting it back on his belt. "Stop whining, you stupid cat," Timid little Cas seemed to be a lot more blunt when in uniform, especially when talking to his equally timid cousin turned cat. "I'm not a terrorist, I fight terrorists," And with that, he reached to scoop the furball up. "Don't bite me! And you probably shouldn't be talking so loud, the wrong people could hear and end up trying to exterminate you."

He...fought terrorists? Damn that was coo-Kail had only half finished the thought when he was swept up by suddenly huge looming arms. Without thought he unleashed his claws, digging them into the fabric of Zippiete's shirt and hopefully not his skin. With a small, almost inaudible yelp he pressed himself against the terrorist-fighter.
"Like you almost did?"
Kail, for some reason, was remarkably un-nervous now he'd been picked up as he grumbled this half-hearted retort. Maybe it was the assurance that he wasn't going to be squished, or the fact Zippeite had told him he was a superhero - or maybe it was the fact he smelled really good. As a cat his sense of smell had vastly improved, and whilst the shielding magic prevented him from placing how Zippiete's smell = Same as Cas's smell, it certainly didn't prevent him from attributing a sense of warm familiarity to it, even if it was accompanied with a sense of bemusement.

"...Yes," Well, Zippeite wasn't expecting his cousin to be an alien cat. Honest mistake.
He grimaced when the feline clung to his shirt, but at least found comfort in the fact he could keep track of him and zipped the jacket of his uniform over the tiny, furry body.
It didn't take long to suddenly feel itchy and that terrible, puffy eyes issue that came from close contact with cats. "Ugh," He sniffled and rubbed his face. "We should find a new place to talk. If your family sees us, it could be bad."
And without waiting for permission, he started trudging along away from the house, trying to think of where to go.

Funnily enough Kail hadn't exactly planned on being an alien cat - so suprises all round. And right now he was too busy stealing Zippy's body warmth to do anything else. Yes, when you were in the deep black abyss of emotion you didn't really notice you were like..an icicle. But afterwards you did. And so Kail purred slightly when he zipped his jacket up.
He'd give being a cat this - people couldn't tell if you were blushing. Did cats blush? A mystery from the ages. He made somewhat of a rumbling sound for agreement, still rather busy stealing warmth. Warmth theif foreveerrr~
And at least, in these arms, he knew he was safe tonight.
