It was an overcast day that threatened rain, but In Defiance was too with self-appointed task to really take much notice. The pool he currently circled was deep and murky, mostly mud it stretched out across the ground and swallowed the surrounding trees. Reed rustled with both the wind and movements of the creatures hiding within. There were probably water fowl nesting within, but Defiance wasn’t interested in those. No, he was hunting frogs. As to why, if asked his only answer would have been ‘because I can.’ He had nothing better to do. A flash of colour in the muddy water caught his keen gaze. The buck dashed forward and was up to his chest within a moment. “Ah, where did it go?” He said out loud as he searched, at one point sticking his head below the surface of the water. Nope. It was gone. The buck shivered in the freezing water and slowly started back towards solid ground.

Follow the Moon was not sure what brought her out of her relatively warm cave to the cold water. Maybe it was the grumbling in her stomach that drove the doe outside. Either way, a fish sounded good and her mouth was watering at the thought of a good meal. As Moon walked down from the cave she dwelled within, she listened to the soothing music of the swamp. The stars weren't out yet, but that was no tragedy to her. Moon much preferred the glowing orb she saw in her naming dream. As she shook her head, Moon reached a patch of swamp she normally fished in and was surprised to see a buck coming out of the water. "Hello there stranger." Moon did not mind other kin, nor did she mind a stranger near her home. She was happy to share words with anyone she met.

The buck stopped, the water reaching halfway up his legs, and smiled brightly at the doe. He was just as surpised to see her, but he wasn’t put off guard for long. “Hello yourself!” He replied amiable as he started moving again. Defiance finally left the water, dipping his head to Follow the Moon in greeting, making sure to also give her a playful wink during the motion.
“Hang on a moment.” He trotted a little further around the pond away from her and then shook like a dog, flinging mud and water from his body. His bright coat was stilled stained with brown but he hardly seemed to care as he started moving back around towards her. “Didn’t want to cover you in mud. That would have been a shame.”

Moon dipped her front two legs in a motion similar to what would be a human bow. The wink was not missed, and Moon felt slightly flattered at such a gesture being aimed at her. She felt even more so with the subtle flirting.
With a small smile, Follow the Moon said, “I appreciate the kindness. While I came to fish, getting more wet than necessary would be bad in this weather.” She shivered slightly, though she wasn’t necessarily that cold. The gesture was more to add a bit of flavor to her statement.
“What brings you out of your home this day? Were you seeking fish as well, stranger?” Moon asked.

In Defiance looked back at the pond and gave an almost sheepish grin. “Ah well… I imagine I’ve probably scared them all down into the mud by now. I almost wish I had been seeking fish, then we could have shared, but no…” The buck chuckled. “I was wasting time looking frogs.”
Expecting a follow-up question, he continued speaking. “Not to eat mind you. They taste terrible as far as I’m concerned, but they are fun to catch.” Obviously Defiance had nothing better to do that idle his time away in ponds, and looked quite happy with himself.
“We should get you something to eat.”

Follow the Moon chuckled as he sheepishly told her of the possibility of scaring off all of the fish. The idea of chasing frogs sounded fun and she was intrigued with the idea. "I had not thought of catching frogs as a past time. It does sound fun, though."
Her eyes glowed merrily as she said, "I would not mind catching some frogs with you another time. Or maybe after we gather something for a meal. If you'll join me, I mean."
The doe wasn't used to such charming bucks as she mostly kept to herself. She didn't mind other kin and enjoyed their company, but she was often content to be on her own.
With another smile, much larger than the others Moon said wryly, "I realize I have forgotten my manners. My name is Follow the Moon and it is a pleasure to meet you, stranger."

“The art of frog catching is a fine one and I would be happy to teach you.” The buck’s eyes twinkled with mirth. Defiance was more than happy to have some company. While he tended to wander and was never stuck with another Kimeti for very long, each and every one that he met was always a dear friend in his heart. “But first, we’ll get ourselves a meal.”
He dipped his head, recognizing that his manners had also been forgotten. “Well met Follow the Moon.” Defiance grinned. A lovely name for a lovely doe. “I am called In Defiance. Now, what do you feel like to eat today?”
He did a circle on the spot, humming thoughtfully. “There’s fruit, some unpalatable plants as well and a stream where some fish might not be terrified of my giant hooves all to the south… the direction I traveled from.”

Follow the Moon nodded her head in greeting, "It is my pleasure, In Defiance. May I call you Defiance? I will need a lot of teaching, but I'm a willing student. Frog catching sounds like a fun thing to do after a meal."
Moon did prefer to stick close to home, but she was not afraid of travelling with others. Tilting her head as if in thought she said, "Hmmm... That all sounds delicious, but I did have my heart set on a fish. Surely with your skill at catching frogs you will be able to catch us one quickly? I will gather fruit and perhaps some nuts while you are doing so."

“Of course you can. If I may call you Moon.” The buck gave her a cheeky grin. “Frog catching is a good work out that’s for sure.”
In Defiance turned in the direction of the stream and chuckled. “I’ll give it my best shot.” To be honest he wasn’t entirely sure of his fish catching abilities. His normal frog catching attempts usually ended dismally, though in his defense, he hardly took the activity seriously.
“I’ll go get to work. We may as well meet beside the stream, there quite a nice area there to sit down for a meal.” He smiled and flicked his ears forward. “Until our rendezvous...”
Leaving her to get to work gathering nuts and berries (which might end up their only food), Defiance trotted off towards the stream and the fish. He was going to give it his very best shot.

Gathering the plants and nuts was something that Moon was somewhat used to. Whenever she was hungry, she would go to the same place she always visited and would gather only enough to sustain her. But this time was different – she wasn’t sure of where things would be and that slowed her down considerably. Eventually, however, Follow the Moon found what she was looking for and headed back to the place where In Defiance had left her.

In Defiance had yet to cry victory. It was not from want of trying. The silvery little fish just seemed to slip out of reach every time. He splashed back and forth through the stream, puffing with the exertion. But he did seem at all inclined to give up and continued on until finally a well timed flick of his hooves sent a fish flopping up onto land. It was tiny and hardly much of a meal for one of them, but he picked it up by the tail and marched proudly back to find Follow the Moon.
