"You doin' anything?" Roch asked over the phone as he headed for the monster dorm. He hadn't talked to Taryn since his vacation, and he definitely needed some... well, Taryn time. That was the only way he could explain it. He needed a bit of slowing down-- Or maybe he figured she needed a bit of speeding up.
Besides, he'd found something he was positive she would enjoy, or... hoped she would enjoy! That was something he'd been trying to find for a while. She was so... book smart and stuff, unlike him. It was hard to figure out what they could do when hanging out together. But he had hopes he'd finally found something!
"If you don't say you are within ten seconds I'm gonna take you with me whether you are or not," he threatened evilly, grinning. He was to the steps of the building, which he took two at a time. "Ten," he started out.

"Hm?" Taryn asked. She'd heard Roch's question, but it hadn't quite processed by the time he began speaking again. "Oh! Oh, I--" There he went, rambling on and beginning the countdown. Taryn had been lounging and bored with nothing to do but study, and it just wasn't a studying day. Of course, her parents would kill her if they knew she'd think that.
"Oh, stop, I'm free," the ghoul responded when she had a second, already standing and straightening her clothes before going for her jacket. "Where do you want to meet?"

"I'm almost to your door," he said. "In three... two... here we go," he said, and a light knock came from the door before the knob started to turn. "I found somethin' cool," he said, coming inside. "So I'm really hopin' you're not lounging around naked in the middle of the day, cuz this would be REALLY awkward," he added as he hung up. "Okay, maybe not THAT awkward," he teased as he saw her.
"Sup?" he asked, as if he hadn't just basically threatened her with a time limit. "You ready to go?"

Taryn turned a deeper shade of red at the mention of nudity, but covered it in a flourish as she pulled her pea-coat on. It was even chillier than usual here in Halloween these past couple of weeks.
"Of course I'm ready," she responded, "where are we going?" Anything Roch considered 'cool' made the ghoul somewhat nervous, and reasonably so. His fashion was questionable enough, and he had found whatever this was...

"It's a surprise!" he said. "But I will tell you it's in the maul," he added, holding the door open for her. "After you," he added, motioning her through before following. "I just found it the other day, when I was staring at the map. Me and Chuppi went pinata shopping," he explained. "So now I have two pinatas hanging in my room, it looks like a party."
He was tempted to keep them and get more for the party he would one day throw.

"The maul?" Now that was worrisome. What did the maul have? Clothing stores, jewelry bootiques, a food court... were they going for pizza? She could live with that. She'd never had a real pizza... "Oh? Who's Chuppi?"
There was no accusation in her tone when she asked, first because he had no obligations to her and second because Roch had to have a million friends. Who was she to judge them? She grabbed her cheap purse, just in case, and shoved her hands in her pockets as she followed Roch out.

"Chuppi is a tiny little chupacabre," he said. "You'd love her, she's real cute, and she's got a voice that can make you cry," he bragged on his little friend. "But you gotta be a little careful about startling her, otherwise she pokes you with her quills and you start puking your guts up," he added casually. "She..."
He frowned slightly, picturing the room he'd walked into. "She had a bit of a scare," he said delicately. "When there was that explosion. She ah... died for the first time. So when I went to check up on her, she'd barricaded herself in her room."
And obviously Roch had decided to do something about it.

Taryn's smile suddenly fell and turned to a deep frown. That wasn't good... In fact, that was a pretty serious mood-kill. She had been aware of what happened shortly after the meeting with the horsemen, but had not been there herself. So soon after the foray into the haunted house, it had seemed like something people wouldn't want to talk about.
"Oh," was all Taryn said, looking down at the floor in front of her.

"Taryn," he said, turning so he was blocking her way. "Hey," he said, touching her chin. "Hey, right now I need you to be happy with me," he said quietly. "Okay? Because while I dragged them out because they were traumatized, I'm draggin' you out cuz I had a b***h of a time, myself. I need to play, okay? So... can you play with me today?"

Taryn gave a surprised little gasp and nearly stumbled over herself with Roch suddenly appearing. The only expression she could manage at the moment was a stunned one, eyes wide and lips slightly parted. His words struck her, though, and a slow smile grew. She nodded.
"Of course I can..."
Ignore the fluttering in your heart, ignore the heat in your cheeks...

"Good, cuz couples get in for half price today, and I spent most of my money on pinatas yesterday!" he said, starting for the door again. "I picked up a little bit of cash, but I swear the boogies are onto me," he told her, looking irritated. "All of a sudden there's supposed to be some curfew, or so they told me on the streets. That really blows."
They were out of the dorms and starting down the path that led to town. "And I completely forgot about the cupcakes," he said abruptly. "Craaap. Next time, okay? Because I am definitely going to learn how!"

"Oh, I can pay for myself," Taryn said, patting her purse. Roch may not have been offering to pay for her at all, but it seemed polite to reassure him that this wasn't a date. She barely had anything to buy, and her parents supplied the funds for her education. What was left just ended up stagnating in a box. "Psh, don't worry about the cupcakes. We can do that any time."
The chimera waved her hand dismissively. She figured today wouldn't be the last time she'd see her good friend Roch, so why worry about time? They had forever.

He gave her a smile, one that wasn't quite his usual grin. "Definitely," he said, heading for the maul. It seemed like no time before they were there, having spent the entire time making small talk about the weather and classes. But when he got there he cheered up again, remembering what they'd come for.
"It's on the bottom floor," he told her as they went in. "It seemed like something you'd really like!" he added with a wide grin, holding the door open for her. "C'mon, it's this way!"

Small talk was no issue on a normal day, but it made the ghoul uneasy to hear it coming from Roch of all people. The boil was always full of stories or rambling tangents... but now? Something was wrong. Something was... off. Had something happened while he was on vacation, or was it the school-wise incident? Either way, she didn't like it, but she kept on smiling and chatting for Roch's sake.
"Oh?" she asked, finally seeing something in her companion that she recognized. The bottom floor...
Taryn's knowledge of the maul's layout was foggy at best, and she couldn't remember anything spectacular having been down there. Oh well, Roch had thought of her. That was kind enough. She stepped on in and offered a little bow as she unbuttoned her coat. "Thank you~"

There was a glass wall to the right, revealing the strange spectacle. Strange things could be seen inside, from miniature haunted houses to a gigantic pumpkin right in the middle of a black field. People were standing in front of each of the large objects, bent over with metal sticks in their hands. They were hitting balls with the large clubs at the bottom of the sticks.
"It's mini golf!" Roch said with a grin. "The goal is to get the little ball in the hole with as few hits as you can," he explained. It seemed a little tame for the punk boil, but he looked happy with it. "They've got all sorts of traps for the ball if you hit it off the course," he added. "Including an entire POOL full of punkeesh!"
