Sar crept along, stalking a large black beetle across the ground. He'd been trying to figure out the hunting plan that Maral had been studying that one time. Part of the process was practice. This was the eleventh zebra substitue bug Sar had stalked. He still could figure out the application of the hunting plan. But he would continue to try until he either figured it out or figured out what was wrong with it.

Slowly Sar moved closer to the beetle. Slower and slower. Closer and closer. Sar went down into the pounce position and pounced. Sara squished the bug under his paws. Just like all the other ones. But Sar still didn't see how the hunting plan drawn in the dirt imitated the actuality of the hunt.

After wiping his paws on the clean grass near by, Sar sat on his haunches and stared at the squished once was a bug. Shaking his head, Sar started to "write" the plan again just to see it and figure it out. He was missing something.

Dayo was observing her brother's antics with interest, tail tip wagging as she did so. There was nothing strange about the pouncing, really. She also thought that bugs where fun to hunt, at least the slow ones that could be caught easily and then chewed up. They almost always tasted nasty, but it was part of the experience to chew them up and making faces at the same time. Might be easier to just squash them like Sar had done.

But what really intrigued her was the scribbling in the dirt afterwards. Why? Was there an interesting scent on that patch of dirt? What was he doing? It would drive her nuts if she couldn't see and smell what he was up to, and right now she couldn't since the wind was blowing the wrong way and since his fat butt was obscuring what he was doing.

She started stalking with a larger prey in mind and then tried to pounce on Sar's backside, her short sharp claws extended.

Dar sighed as he finished drawing and was studying the plan. Again. Really. He didn't see the connection between the drawing and the action. The drawing couldn't move and didn't show action. Maybe he needed to draw it out on a larger scale?

Sar brushed out the sketches out rubbing his paws over the nonsensical drawings. Big would probably help. He didn't need the smaller plan as reference since he'd already had it memorized. Sar moved about eight feet to the north and marked it as his starting point.

Then he saw Dayo. "Dayo? What are you doing?" He hadn't even heard her coming. His tail twitched in annoyance at himself. He had just pounced Maral and was going to get pounced himself. He needed to pay more attention to his surroundings. But a small part, maybe slightly bigger than his left paw, was pride that Dayo was so good at stealth. He imagined she'd become a great huntress when they were Maral's ago or a hunt leader when they were mom and dad's age.

"I'm bored," she exclaimed, "Watcha doing Sar?"

She sniffed around where he had scribbled on the ground. The marks meant nothing to her and she wondered why her brother would be mad at the ground. Hunting dirt was no fun but she batted at the 'painting' with her little paw to see if it might be funnier than it looked. Nah, not very funny.

"Why are you clawing the ground," she asked when she failed to see the fun in it, "Why don'tcha use the scratching tree?"

Sar rolled his eyes. "I'm not using the ground as a scratching tree, Dayo." He carefully drew the zebras and the lions much bigger than before, taking up a bit of ground space. He was careful not to smear or step on the drawings of the beasts or lions.

"I'm drawing a hunting plan I memorized when I was with Maral. I don't see how they correlate with the actual movement of the hunt, but I was thinking maybe it had to do with the size of the drawing." Sar studied the drawing carefully re-creating the plans to scale with plenty of space between the prey and the hunters. "Maral said that hunters use the plans, but I don't know if they were make sense for a hunt." Sar tilted his head, "I mean, the drawings still can't move." He shrugged and continued to map out the plan. Maybe when it was done and he could study it closer to real scale.

Dayo's eyes started to glaze over as soon as Dar started to use words like 'memorized'. She tried, but he talked so much and she was sure she missed parts. Hunting and clawing on the ground couldn't be related, could it? Clawing trees and then hunting made much more sense, but she was getting bored now.

"Perhaps if you claw it on a tree instead?" she said in an effort to be helpful and then rolled over on her back, pawing at his tail. Perhaps he could be persuaded to play with her instead of the dirt.

Sar shook, his head. "I'm not going to claw it on a tree. It wouldn't be any bigger than when drawn on the ground." He knew her eyes had glazed over, it happened a lot when Sar tried to communicate with his littermates. Or other cubs for that matter. Maybe one day, he'd call them on their bluffs and quiz them. But not today.

Today, Dayo was around and Sar had no desire to quiz her or feel bad when she failed because she hadn't been listening. That would only make him feel more horrible about the situation.

When Dayo rolled to her belly and started swatting at his tail, Sar waited, relaxing the tension out of himself before pouncing on her exposed belly and blowing a raspberry on it.

Dayo giggled with delight as her brother finally lightened up a bit and started to play properly (in her opinion). She squirmed a little since that's what you were supposed to do, but didn't work very hard to try to get away. She batted half heartedly at his head with a paw, but seemed rather pleased with the attention.

"Stoppit stoppit..." she gasped between giggle fits, but more since that was what you were supposed to say. She didn't really want him to stop playing with her.

Sar pinned Dayo to the ground with her exposed belly up to the sky and grabbed a near by tall grass shoot that was kind of feathery on top. "Tickle Monster!" He shouted and laughed with a fake evil laugh and started to use the feathery grass blade on Dayo's belly and the pads of her paws and her sides and her ears. He blew a raspberry every now and again on her stomach just to mix it up.

"I am the winner!" He declared slightly squishing Dayo into the ground without grinding her body or hurting her.

"Noooooo," Dayo wailed between her giggle fits, "Not the tickle monster!"

She was having tons of fun, but at this point she was laughing too much to try to get away. When Sar declared himself the winner she could only agree. She raised her paws above her head, exposing her belly completely as a sign of submission. It had started out as pure silliness, but Sar had won fair and square.

"I give up," she said, "You win! Now get off me, please Mr. Ticklemonster."

Sar tilted his head pretending to think about Dayo's demanding request of the winner. "Hmmmmm. No. As the loser to the Ticklemonster, you have become the Ticklemonsters cushion." Sar nodded to emphasize his command. "This is what happens when you lose. You become the cushion."

Sar wiggled onto of his Dayo cushion. "You are a very comfy cushion, Dayo. You should lose more often." Sar smiled at her.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 14, 2012 2:43 pm

"Aww," Dayo said and pouted, "But I don't waanna be the cushion. How long am I supposed to stay here?"

She squirmed, but couldn't really do much as Sar wiggled around to find a comfortable position on top of her. Next time she'd win and he could be her cushion. See how he liked it... Perhaps if she didn't do anything he'd get bored and go back to scratching in the mud? With this new great plan in mind Dayo feigned falling asleep. She was over-acting a little bit with some really fake snores, but staying still trying to look asleep actually made her feel sleepy.

"As long as I want a cusion, Dayo! I'm the winner after all!" Sar teased and giving his cushion a fond lick on the top of her head, making her fur there stick up in weird angles.

After a while, Sar noticed that Dayo's exaggerated snores were becoming less and less so. Apparently being used as the Ticklemonster's cushion was tiring. But Sar really wasn't that tired, and he had options in front of him. Sar could either continue with the task he'd assigned himself earlier, drawing out the hunting plans, much larger, and studying them. Or he could bother Dayo by waking her up and making her play some more. After all, it was she that had come up on him claiming to be bored. And going to sleep out in the open like this wasn't much better at all than being bored. Mainly because of possible hyenas coming up on them, and of course because it was boring to Sar.

Movement to his right, brought Sar's attention onto a spider in the sand, and Sar smirked a little. It's eight legs carried it a few feet from them. "Look, Dayo! A sand spider!"

Dayo had nearly perfected her faking when Sar shouted in her ear. Her eyes snapped open and she looked around for the offending arachnid. She extended a paw, trying to squish it but couldn't quite reach as long as the tickle monster was sitting on her chest. She couldn't be a very comfy pillow at the moment, with all her squirming to try to reach the spider.

"You should hunt that instead of beetles," she said, "They're harder to get and got more legs to chew on."

Sar rolled off Dayo laughing as he stared at the sand spider. "I don't chew on the beetles. That's just gross. Especially dung beetles. But a spider is a challenge and I haven't examined one yet. Do you want to stalk it with me, Dayo? I'll wait til later to redraw the hunting plans."
