No one, ordinarily, would notice the slightly hunched-over figure in the corner of the cafeteria, clutching a glass of juice. While the place wasn't crowded, at least half of the tables were taken by people chatting over lunch; no one, really, bothered about that one loner in the corner.
No one except an old lady, toddling out of the kitchen with a tray of cookies.
No one paid her any mind, either, and after a while of looking around expectantly, she headed to Reine's corner. The smile on her face was positively radiant as she shoveled cookies onto the table. Reine stared- she'd never quite seen anyone this generous before.
"Thank you," she managed, but then the strange lady was gone. As odd as the encounter had been, Reine felt a surge of warmth- someone cared enough to notice her! And leave her cookies. The smell, at least, was intoxicating, and she picked one up, then took a bite.

Jerry was feeling... stressed. At best. His burns had healed, leaving only their pink and white swirls of flesh across his cheek and neck, and so Shaving had returned to business as normal, but while his hygiene had taken a turn for the better his mood had taken a turn for the worse.
Candace appearing in his room reeking of bourbon had not helped. Not to mention his heart not being into his usual form of self-therapy. Never ending missions, just sleep, go suffer through rotting dead bodies, try to sleep, get suffocated by an inky darkness that tried to climb in through your eyeballs and blot out his brain had finally taken its toll on the man. He couldn't remember when he had gotten a good night's sleep.
There were more duties ahead, and honestly he should be forcing himself through the Shadowrun one more time... but he had lived through it once, that was enough for him just then, despite the Sun Training it meant. He had been too tired to even think about trying the other training runs between their endless missions.
It was for coffee that he finally drifted into the cafeteria, a nice hot cup of coffee to maybe perk him up before going out into the mist again for some target practice.

The cookies were crunchy. Reine rather liked crunchy- chewy cookies had never really been her thing. They were a little sweet for her liking, but good enough- better than most of the cafeteria food, really. Some way through her second cookie, she noticed most of the others had finished eating, and were clearing out- but even as she scanned the crowd, the life trainee picked out a face she recognised, if only briefly.
"Jerry? Hey, Jerry!" She waved him over, a bright smile on her face.
Wait, why was she so happy? She wasn't even ever this happy seeing Eva, or Otto, or Jordan.

Blearily, the older man glanced up at hearing his name, nearly spilling hot coffee from the dispenser all over his hand. "Ah.... Miss Renie!" He forced a smile, catching himself before pocketing a few creamers and sweetener packets before sauntering meekly towards her, "Er... how have you been? You seem energetic this afternoon, ahahaha..." Personally, he felt a bit like he was going to pass out any moment. Just... coffee it away and get back to work.

He looked tired, but she had no idea why. Why was anyone tired? They shouldn't be tired! It was so early in the afternoon, he had no excuse!
"It's Reine!" She giggled at him; the way he'd greeted her reminded a little of the Doctor, who'd always been so polite with her. How was he doing? She should visit him in the pods someday, when she had the chance. A4, that was, not Dr H. You had to spell Doctor out properly. He'd been so proper, after all, and so British. She missed him.
"You look so down! What's wrong?" She pulled up the chair beside her, patting it. "Come sit with me!"
The grin on her face became almost manic, but it never once faded from her face. "Tell me everything, Jerry! What's bothering you? Cheer up!"

"N-nothing!" Jerry tried to hide his embarrassment with his own smile as he sat beside her, but his hands were shaking as he emptied the creamers into the black recesses of the coffee. "Just.. just stressed, I suppose..." Well, there was certainly something particular bothering him, but he wasn't sure Reine was the best person to just... blather it all back to. "It's been awfully busy, hasn't it? Hardly any time to... do much of anything but Missions and training." He glowered at his coffee cup, debating his options.
Well... she... *was* a fellow phoenix, after all, right? No... real harm in just venting a little? She wouldn't think worse of him just to get a few things off his chest? Finally, he slumped, giving in to instinct, "It's Robert."

"I know, I know!" The next minute she was clapping an arm over his shoulder, patting it fondly. "So many missions! It's like they'll never stop and they get worse and worse but yay there's nothing going on now and look all the christmas decorations!"
She studied him, letting the grin slip for a moment. He looked so sad.. so sad, what could she do? Ruffling Jerry's hair fondly, Reine handed him a cookie- though it looked more like she was force-feeding him. Maybe they'd cheer him up? Baked goods were always comfort food, after all!
"OH, ROBERT! Believe me, man, I totally get you there! That's all you needed to say!" Reine nodded sagely, patting Jerry again. "Robert's such a meanie poopoohead, what did he do, lemme get him for you!" She cracked her knuckles.
"I beat him twice before, I can do it again! I got your back, bro!"

"Ah... Chriffmuff, umuff chewiff fo-" He managed as suddenly his mouth was filled with cookie, and it was all he could do to chew and swallow without gagging before there was the sudden hand clapping his back. His face looked grim a moment before he turned to glower darkly, light obscuring his eyes behind his glasses as his hands tightened into fists. "No... no, he just... it's awful. The most.... heinous thing. He...." He looked pained, as though the thought of it made him visibly sick, "He...refuses to sing."

"THAT SINNER." Reine stood up abruptly, punching the table with a fist. "Whoops, was that insensitive?" Sinner.. sounded like singer, after all.. and she didn't want to remind Jerry of something that upset him.
There were lots of eyes staring at her, and blushing slightly, the girl sat back down, throwing her arms around Jerry.
"You should beat him in a fight! He's pretty easy. Challenge him with something like 'Sing or.. sink! Except don't push him into the sea or something I think that might not go across too well."
Poor Jerry, poor poor Jerry.. Reine was comforting him like she would Otto, if Otto were even the littlest bit as docile as Jerry was being. Good boy!
She rewarded him with another cookie.

"I usually try to... mostly avoid sugar, but these are pretty good" He managed, smirking a bit as the girl practically hung off of him, his face flushing. Enlisting had been the best decision of his life, apparently. Petra, Candace, and now Reine... So many new women in his life who actually spoke to him *more than once*.
He chewed through the next cookie, brows furrowing with growing intent. "I'm trying to start this Choir, you see... I don't know if you saw the fliers?" he added hopefully, "And I heard him and... and he's... he's BRILLIANT! Amazing! It's... it's RIDICULOUS that some... some... useless meat head- er, sorry, that's how Roar describes him- has that kind of raw talent and... and... and simply refuses to do anything with it! It's not like I'm making him do something embarrassing, even! I have plans! I thought people would LIKE it! I mean..." He finished the next cookie, eyes now locked on the garlands decorating the cafeteria, "We could at the very least find some people to sing Christmas carols, even! But he refused, outright refused, and wouldn't give any reason! I tried to talk him into it... we... well, it was... *sort of* a fight... but I probably should have stuck to Roar instead of dancing," He pouted. He was feeling... better, somehow. Without her offering, he picked up a third cookie of his own accord, munching it thoughtfully. Perhaps venting really did help?

"There there there you poor darling. Don't you know the number one rule you never avoid sugar! Sugar is the BEST THING EVER." Clearly.
"A choir? That's amazing! You gotta let me hear you sing sometime again! I remember from the island trial but it's all so vague and everything!" She was staring up at him with puppy eyes, one finger poking him in the arm.
"Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase? You should totally totally sing christmas carols, I know Caelius would love it! Doesn't Caelius sound a bit like christmas? You could like just go down the halls and sing and I bet it'd be amazing!"
Yes, yes it would be. She could already see it. Robert in a santa hat, even. Jerry would look good with reindeer antlers. Nevermind where they'd get those in the first place, it was the thought that counted!
"I will train you, young grasshopper!" Reine put her hands on his shoulders again, forcing him to turn and face her. "WITH MY HELP YOU WILL BEAT ROBERT. And then he will sing."

Jerry's eyes remained locked firmly on the Christmas garlands, his chewing slow and mechanical as Reine carried on. It was... odd. The consistency was totally different, as was the taste, but somehow... it was like eating his Gram's Hamantashen. The more she insisted on Carols, the redder his face got before suddenly, he was on his feet, the trainees at the tables around them glancing their direction once more as he slammed a hand onto the table, "There's got to be CANDLES!"
He blinked, realizing she had just said something important. "Beat him? And... and he'll join? Really? You'd help me?" His eyes lit up immediately with hope and joy and wonder.

Candles? He seemed to really like them.
"YEAHHHH CANDLES!" Standing up, she took Jerry's hand and twirled somewhat clumsily.
"TO INFINITY AND BEYONDDDDDDDD~~!"
Where infinity was, presumably, outside, and beyond was the training grounds.

"Yeff!!" Jerry leaped after her, dropping his coffee while stuffing another cookie in his mouth to free his hands. Roar was summoned onto his shoulder before they even made it out of the building, accompanied by a mad cackling, "Yes, yes yes, just a bit more practice and I'll CRUSH HIM INTO IT!"

"THAT IS A PRETTY COOL WEAPON," she yelled, giggling as she summoned Alynthe.
"Lookit my baaaby, isn't she the cutest, now listen, ok, this is what you do, you go right for him!!" With that, she lunged towards Jerry, stabbing at him.
Still giggling.
