Kay slipped into a small training yard tucked away in the back of the Shinigami Academy. A fresh batch of young Shinigami had recently graduated from the Academy, of which Kay was one, so the school was unusually empty. This suited her-- she did not often get much time to herself, so she savored her privacy.
She took a breath to center herself and fell into Catch Sparrows, the first movement of the Ketan. She pivoted carefully, exaggerating the movement as she slid into Maiden Dancing. Although the move in combat was meant to be a quick and fluid flurry of kicks and footwork, she placed her feet slowly, deliberately. She took a half step back, paused to adjust the distribution of her weight-- it wasn't right, and an experienced martial artist could take advantage of the small misstep. She set her stance again and made Hands Like Knives, Fifteen Wolves, Thrown Lightning...
As she moved, she let go of all her pent-up emotion. Focused only on the exact placement of her feet, the perfect angle of her arms, the smooth transition from form to form.
She twisted, dropped, surged forward into Thunder Upward. By the time she finished her Ketan, she had worked up a mild sweat and her head felt clearer.

It was a perfect day. The sun was shining, the birds where singing, and the the air was crisp. Any normal person would want to be outside and that exactly where Yamoto was. He had decided to take a stroll around the grounds of the Seretei to clear his head. Well mainly it was to procrastinate from the mountains of paper work now piled on his desk. Although a seasoned captain, Yamoto had never gotten used to paperwork, and it was a wonder he hadn't blow up his office yet. The veteran shinigami wondered in to the grounds of the shinigami academy. Even on a leisurely stroll Yamoto still needed to get things done. He had gone to the academy grounds to see if he could recruit any new shinigami to join his squad but no one seemed to be around. "I thought there would be at least one person here." Out of the corner of the captain's eye he saw a girl practicing the Ketan style. Obviously she must be have must been planning to join squad 7, but Yamoto was intrigued none the less. The captain walked quietly up to her in order to not disturb her. The captain studied her form, it was raw and powerful but lacked finesse. The sign of a true blooded new recruit.
"You know training by yourself is invaluable but nothing beats training with a partner." The captain had sat down on a flat rock in order to rest. There was a smile on his face. "If you wish I'd be more than happy to train with you."

Kay looked up at the sound of a man's voice. She dropped her stance and relaxed, smiling as she pushed her hair out of her eyes. She recognized the speaker. It was Yamato Shiboo, captain of Squad 5. It was unfair to say that he looked smaller in person-- he was several inches taller than she-- but it was still strange to see him up close. She was mildly surprised to find him wandering on his own. Kay always assumed that captains were too busy for simple things like walks, even if the day was as nice as this one.
"I'm not sure I would prove much of a challenge to you, taicho," Kay said with a slightly rueful grin. Among the new recruits, she might have been quite skilled, but captains were a class far removed from her own. "Anyway, I would imagine you have more important things to be doing,"

"A captain's main duty is to look out for the well being of every shinigami, so training one is a very important thing to do. Plus I think you'll be much more of a challenge than you think." The captain stood up and walked a few feet away from the female shinigami. "Now when ever you are ready."

[No worries-- I didn't give you much to work with.]
Kay instinctively fell into Hands Like Knives, maintaining a close, knife-hand guard with her weight distributed primarily on her back foot. Her smile because a bit wild around the edges, but still amiable. She examined Yamato more closely, noting his heavy musculature. She was sure he was older than he seemed and he must have seen more battles of all varieties than she and her graduating class combined. She supposed she had no real hope of besting him in a match, but she would fight him to the best of her ability. To Kay, anything but her best was unacceptable.
"My name is Kay, by the way," she told the captain. "Try not to break my neck if you can help it,"

"The pleasure is all mine Kay. Now shall we begin?" The captain smiled as he began to gather reiatsu in his right hand. The hand soon began to glow due to amount of reiatsu now accumulated. Yamoto started the mold the reiatsu in a thin sharp layer around his hand. "Be careful now this is one of squad 7 most basic yet deadliest abilities. My right hand can now cut through any substance as easy as any zanpakuto."
The captain began to run towards Kay at a rather fast speed. He was attacking her head on in order to test her reaction ability. "Good luck." The captain lunged his right hand towards the kills chests. If full contact was made the young shinigami would look like a hollow.

[Don't stress it 3nodding ]
Kay grinned, pleased with the challenge Yamato presented to her. She had heard of this particular technique, had seen it demonstrated by her hakuda instructors at the academy, but she'd never actually been on the receiving end of a live attack. Although the instructors had pushed the shinigami initiates to excel, they were discouraged from permanently damaging the novices, and so all hand-to-hand combat had been of the simpler, considerably less lethal variety. She was excited to play with live ammunition.
She watched Yamato carefully, noting the quick, deft speed with which he moved. Kay realized that she had no way of blocking his glowing right hand. It was keen as any blade and she was likely to lose a hand if she tried a counter.
Yamato swung at her head. Kay dropped into Heron Falling, an evasive movement. She heard the blade of Yamato's hand slice through the air where her head had been an instant ago. He was incredibly fast, and Kay was sure he'd at least clipped a few pale blonde hairs.
Heron Falling brought Kay into a low, compact stance. Immediately, she surged into Thunder Upward. Although she could have used a less aggressive, open-handed variant of the technique, she knew Yamato was more than capable of handling most any of her attacks, and she wanted to put on a good show. She closed her hands into fists as she made the two-handed punch towards Yamato's chest, knowing that it the power of her legs and the snap of her wrists that gave the attack its strength.

Yamoto was impressed at how skillfully his attacks had been dodged. The maneuver Kay had used left the captain vulnerable to many attacks, and he was now on the receiving end of one. It had been a very long time since Yamoto had been in such close quarters combat. It was rather exciting for him, but he had to contain his excitement or the captain would forget he is only fighting a new recruit.
The two fists were coming up directly towards Yamoto's chest. The captain being in the awkward position of leaning forward decided that the best scenario was to lean for forward some more. He pushed off the ground with his feet and did a flip over Kay's head his lower body barely avoiding the punches. Yamoto know had a advantage being behind Kay. The captain lowered his center of gravity and went for a sweeping kick in order to trip up the new recruit.

Kay grinned wryly as Yamato deftly flipped over her head. She supposed she shouldn't have been surprised that the captain had so easily evaded her attack, and anyway, it only spurred her on to work harder, to think faster, to consider every step.
A single, perfect step. It was a fundamental tenet of the Ketan, a goal towards which she would always strive. She had never seen it done, but her teacher hand once described it to her-- a single movement, elegantly simple and beautiful for it.
Far from taking that single step, Kay let her forward momentum pull her forward and she tucked her head and rolled away from Yamato, who had landed behind her. Her caution paid off as the somersault carried her just clear of his sweeping kick, though she felt the toe of his foot brush her back. She rose out of her roll and pivoted, moving fluidly into Maiden Dancing, a series of quick, precise steps and rapid kicks. Her leg furled out, snapping towards Yamato's stomach. At the last moment, she pulled her leg back and snapped it out again, this time at the side of his head.

Yamoto had known he last attack would have been easily dodged but he hadn't expected such a beautiful counter attack. The captain threw up his arms in the x formation to block the first kick. To avoid the second kick to his head he leaned back as far as he could placing one arm behind and pushing back with his leg the captain perform a one hand back hand spring. Yamoto was safely away from the young shinigami for now. "I'm going to switch to mid range attacks now be ready."
The captain's left hand began to glow intensely with reiatsu. The reiatsu was so intense the air around Yamoto's hand began to gravitate towards the appendages. Yamoto cocked his hand back as if he were going to throw a punch. "Kaze Bakuha" Yamoto threw his hand forward causing him to release a giant blast of wind heading straight towards Kay.

"Thanks for the warning," Kay responded, her look was one of rapt concentration, but her tone was still light. Yamato must have known he had just made things infinitely more difficult for her. The Ketan was meant for combat in close quarters. Ranged attacks of any variety rendered all but some techniques fairly useless, none of which were attacks of her own. Unless she managed to close the distance between herself and Yamato, she would be stuck dodging until she made a mistake.
The air hummed as Yamato gathered reiatsu around his hand. On instinct, Kay dropped to the ground, just as he shouted to release his attack. The resulting blast of wind howled towards her, and she dug her fingers into the hard dirt, turning her shoulder to take the brunt of the attack. The gale hit her like a hammer, squeezing the air from her lungs and threatening to knock her head over heels. She leaned against the wind, skidding back several yards but maintaining her position.
When the attack had finally passed, she rose, ignoring the slight pain in her fingers where the skin had been torn by the rough ground. Without pause, she made Striking Forward. It was a simple punch, and would have had no affect at this range had she not also spoken the name of a kido:
"Bakudo 4: Hainawa," The bright yellow spell erupted from her clenched fist, snaking towards Yamato in an attempt to restrain him.
Kay bounded after it, certain that, as a captain, Yamato would be able to deflect the kido rather easily. It served merely to allow her to close distance with him. She threw Fifteen Wolves when she was in range, making quick, sharp knife-hand thrusts at his throat.
