She'd made promise far too long ago to do this. It wasn't Cassandra Norris's style to put things off for so long, and so it had been with a lot of apologies that she'd called Davey out to the sparring field, almost months since they'd discussed having a match to work out their sword arms. Nicodemus had very specific instructions for her;
She was only allowed to use one arm in this fight to get her arm conditioned to her dual wielding of the weapon. It was still a bit of a challenge, however, and even as she waited she stood there with the weapon summoned, swinging the blade testingly to try and get a feel for her arm motion. It felt strange every time, to be honest. Still, she'd made a point to be timely.
Not a minute later than she'd asked, but definitely sooner. Being called out on a five minute tardiness had that effect on her.
"Hey! Sorry for making you wait so long, mm?" she again apologized for her long wait on getting around to all of this sparring stuff. Too much to do, so little time, and she'd spent a couple of weeks laying low on doing anything..strenuous...on orders of Dr. H.

For Davey, the promise of a proper spar was a welcome change from solo training with the dummies. They were useful for building up a FEAR charge and for learning to use your weapon initially, but after the amount of real-world fighting that Davey and Azrael had been in by this point, still dummies just didn't cut it anymore. The monsters were thinking, breathing, moving opponents - and that was what Davey needed to train against.
He'd half forgotten the offer to train with Cass, made several months ago now. Or, more accurately, assumed she had forgotten or been busy, and so let it go. He was keeping busy himself, with training and with learning to live with his disability (while trying to work himself hard enough that he could momentarily forget about the disability).
Her call to finally arrange a fight was a surprise, but a welcome one.
When Davey arrived, he already had Azrael called out to hand. The sword's voice hummed with excitement in Davey's head - it had been impossible not to give in on the way and let Azrael out early. Besides, the grip of the hilt was a familiar and comforting feel.
~Don't squeeze so hard, I'm not a stress toy!~ Azrael squawked, indignant.
Davey relaxed his grip. Clearly, he was looking forward to this too much.
"Not a problem," he told Cass when she apologised. "This place likes to keep us busy." What with all the new training options and duties for the trainees, it was a wonder that their free time had matched up to let this happen at all.
Noting only half of Cass' weapon present, he asked, "So, just the sword half today?"

Cass laughed. "Would you like me to shoot you? I can always do that too if you'd like." she noted, pulling the gun she had tucked into her belt out an weighing it in her hand with familiarity. She'd been handling the weapon a lot better after their little run in with the giant flaming death creature at the haunted house.
Ohhh, that had been one hell of a giant flaming death creature. But it was dead now and part of her delighted with that. Still, she seemed excited all over, it never was a dull day around the Deus facilities.
"It really does keep us on our toes, though. Caelius nearly broke one of my ribs a few weeks ago, and that was just on top of all of those training runs. Have you done those? They're intense, man. Took me a while to pass 'em all." She needed to put herself up to a challenge of doing better on the princess island course again, though. She'd... probably done the poorest with that one. Or Deathsweeper.
Hrngh, Deathsweeper.
"It's about time to get some good stretching in and get back into my groove, though." she squeezed both of the handles in her hands and Nicodemus seemed to turn into a lull in her head; I'm putting everything on you, Cassandra. I'm not going to try and save you this time. the voice in her head warned. A small glance up towards her left temple as the exchange continued for a short while, before she seemed to shrug at what she was told.
"Would you like to start, or should I?"

Davey chuckled. "Well, you could, but since you said you wanted to improve your swordwork, I don't know that you'll get much out of this session." They might have to try that at some point, though. Cass at full strength and Davey working on dodging bullets as well as blades.
He rocked back on his heels as Cass mentioned Caelius nearly breaking her ribs. A training session gone wrong, or some kind of punishment? He noticed the Death Hunter's temper (who hadn't, after the whole 'losing Soul Harvester' thing), but that seemed a little excessive. When Cass turned the conversation to the new training courses, Davey was relieved.
"Yeah, I've tried two of them so far," he said. "I'm looking forward to rest of them." Probably the most challenging ones had been left to last. The Mist and Death courses had both seemed very complex, and better left for when he had more time.
"Would you like to start, or should I?"
The nice thing to do would have been to say 'ladies first'. But the enemy wasn't going to be that nice and he doubted that someone like Cass wanted him going easy on her just because she was female. She was just as dangerous as any of the guys, so Davey would treat her the same way.
"En guarde," was the only warning before he struck.

"I need to get use to using the bigger of the two as it is." Cass agreed, tucking the gun away into her belt again. Nicodemus didn't sound too happy at the fact she kept doing that. Jack so help me, Cassandra, I'll make it so that you can never do that in battle ever again. he noted, but Cass half ignored the creature in her head, instead getting some joy in the fact that Davey came at her first.
Excellent, she didn't mind him moving before she did, that was part of the fun - she wouldn't always get to first-strike.
"Well, I'd suggest that you do the Life Course and the Mist Courses last. I think I spent the most time on the Life one, took me nearly twenty tries to successfully complete it, and the Mist one is a conglomerate of the rest, so good to get an idea of what you'll be doing in 'em." Though it felt weird to act like the mist course was...difficult. She'd walked in and out of it without a problem herself, which was baffling, to say the least.
Still, she'd moved too slowly to block the man's first attack on her, taking his blade for the brunt of the damage it dealt and wincing from it.
Careful of your ribs, Cassandra, they might get injured again if you're not careful of them.
<> she huffed back at his mother-hen like tone before she reworked her grip on the handle of her own blade and swung it back in turn...

Davey nodded in thanks for the information. That seemed like a good idea, to leave Mist til last if it was parts of all the others rolled into one. The Life mission... oh yes, the Jenga tower. "Doesn't surprise me if Dr H designed it," he grimaced.
Then Cass was attacking and Davey let conversation drop to focus on the spar. He raised Azrael in an attempt to divert Cass' blade, but she still scored low on his side.
Moving back, Davey considered the wound. Not terrible (thank goodness for the FEAR shielding that their weapons generated), but he was glad to have brought some bandages in order to take care of any scrapes afterwards.
"That was a nice move," he told Cass. For soemone who said she favoured the gun half of her weapon, she had started off on a good, strong note.
He feinted a thrust at Cass's midsection, but she easily moved out of the way. Davey almost smiled. This could actually end up being a challenging fight.

Cass grinned, more than willing to share. "Put some time into your own unit before Death and Mist too, just so you do something you're...good at.." which was probably why the mist tower had been such a breeze for her. It literally was her last. Still, it wasn't a time to keep up the chatting, instead making a point to keep moving.
"If you liked that one, I'll keep them coming then." Cass grinned, as full of energy as she always was as she planted her weight and took another swing at the older hunter, making a point to keep only one hand on the weapon. She had to remember that she needed to dual wield, even if it was tempting to put all of her arm strength into one half of her assaults.
Stay Balanced Nicodemus reminded her as to why she was doing just that, making a point to aim towards one of Davey's shoulders before she stepped back - a distance easily closable with his height over her.

"You don't pull your punches, do you?" Davey growled as Cass landed a strike against his good shoulder. Fair enough, it wasn't like she was going to take the other arm off or anything, but it... cut a little close to home. (It probably would have been much worse if she'd targeted his bandaged shoulder, though.)
Shaking it off, Davey closed in quickly and struck. If Cass had been trying to play with his head, she'd succeeded. Davey missed for the second time in a row.
~What are you doing?~ Azrael demanded, voice heavy with disgust. ~Get over your precious ickle feelings and FOCUS before she takes us out completely. This is so humiliating...~
Davey couldn't argue with that. He forced everything else aside. Cass would be making a return strike soon - he needed to be ready.

Cass didn't answer, she just smiled knowingly. To be honest, the idea of striking the bad shoulder -had- passed through her head, but she also knew it would be a low-blow, and if anything, Cass would be a courteous foe. Not to say she hadn't had moments where battle hadn't turned..uhh..interesting (Marcus played his games a bit more interestingly), but still it seemed she was somewhat merciless.
Again, she weighted her feet and shifted the rest of her weight to aim in an upward swing this time, all smiles on her end.
"But if I pulled my punches, that wouldn't be very helpful, now would it, Davey m'dear?" she spoke in a way that was almost sickeningly sweet, perhaps purposely so, but still playful none the less.
After all, she wasn't trying to maim him horribly.

Davey's lips twitched. He almost smiled. "I'd rather you went all-out," he agreed. "Otherwise what's the point of training at all?"
He'd clearly been spending too much time only using the practise dummies. Against a real opponent, he was doing the worst he'd done since first partnering up with Azrael. His actual battles against monsters had gone better than this, and they'd been trying to kill him!
"This just isn't my day," Davey muttered to himself as his next sweeping slash barely pricked Cass. Better than missing entirely, sure. But still pretty darn pathetic over all.

"Ah, but no gun today. The point is to build up my arm muscles for using the blade." she said. She wasn't pulling any punches with the blade, but if she went all out, she would have been in more than one place and it would have defeated the purpose of her having the weapon in her hand at all.
"I think it's because there is a catch-22 of timing with your weapon. It's pretty big, so it's hard to pull of quick and sudden attacks with it unless I'm grounded." she noted, seeming to wonder what the 'fix' for that would have been, moving to strike with her weapon again, though it seemed her ability to not miss was significantly lacking, only grazing him that time.

"Yeah, I didn't mean that," Davey amended as Cass reminded him about her gun. "Though we should try that some time, too." After he'd trained against a few other people, he thought, and grown more used to facing a live opponent again. The dummies were making him soft.
Cass made some good points about his weapon. Speed hadn't been much a problem against monsters - he'd always managed to do quite well against them - but it seemed Cass was more agile than they were. Or just more inclined to dodge. (Maybe the monsters were just that stupid, who knew.)
"I don't do too badly," he told Cass. At the same time, he lunged. Azrael thrust forward at a low height, somewhere around Cass' thigh.

"Maybe you'll just turn into Guts from Berserk. He was pretty BAMF about using one arm to swing around a giant sword." she was probably imagining it for that moment, stepping back too late as the sword hit her leg, throwing her off balance and also slicing through that spot on her pants.
Whoops!
"Oh, by no means are you doing badly, just..something to consider. I'll happily be your training partner for that particular hump though, if you think you need one." as though to emphasize her point, she stepped in again, swinging at the side opposite of the blade.. the side, not the shoulder.
Purposefully so.

Davey frowned, unfamiliar with the strange names Cass threw around. "Is that from a movie? I must have missed it." One of the cons of being deployed so often was that Davey didn't really get to keep up with television or cinema. He had to settle for dvds and TiVo on his downtime while at home (though Sarah had dragged him to the movies a few times, for something different).
Of course, 'giant sword' just made him think of Clarice and her weapon. He didn't think Azrael was going to be competition for the title of biggest sword.
In his head, Azrael snickered.
'What are you, five?' Davey demanded. He shook his head and focused on the match.
"I wouldn't say no to more regular sparring," Davey said to Cass. It couldn't hurt. The worst that could happen was that he missed his swings - just like now.

Cass grinned lightly. "Nope, it's from a TV show I watched when I was about 12..." she made a face, "Probably shouldn't have watched it then." she shivered a bit. "Too much sex." Not that there was ever such a thing as 'too much sex', but for a 12 year old, yeah.
Definitely.
"But definitely up for sparring whenever you'd like. I'm almost always available and I have reasonable reasons when I'm not!"
And then she punctuated her thought by swinging and completely missing him. Whoops.
