He had just watched as some horrible bird had eaten the very last berry from his favourite berry bush. Upon arriving the buck had spotted the ripe berry and for one moment had been filled with a rush of delight just thinking about how juicy it would be, until the bandit had stolen it from him in one quick swoop.

Now he stood staring indignantly up into the trees, watching the stupid creature hop around on a branch, beak stained with red berry juice.

“I hope you are happy.” He told it sullenly. “That was the only thing I was looking forward to today.” It twittered back what Nose presumed to be a bird-insult. “Rude, nasty creature. I hope an Owlcat eats you… you vulture.” He continued to mutter to himself about the injustice of the world and glower at the source of all his woes, having nothing better to do now that his day had been ruined.

[Yes, I should be shot for that title xD]

"Oh dear," a sweet voice sounded right behind him, "birds can be so very inconsiderate, can't they? Downright malicious, even. You poor thing!" A sweet voice, a cool voice, like a rush of water over parched land, a tinkling trip of words, positively sparkling with sympathy. The owner came alongside the pale buck, looking up at the offending creature with a small shake of her head. Her visage did not, perhaps, exactly match that voice, but as she repeated, every bit as sympathetic as the first time around, "You poor thing," it was made very clear it belonged to no other.

As the voice first registered to Nose-in-the-air right behind him the buck sucked in a startled breath and froze. Perhaps a rather odd reaction for a Kimeti, but he had always been rather skittish creature and if there was one thing Nose-in-the-air hated more than anything else, it was being surprised. At least he hadn’t bolted.

Like a startled rabbit he stood there completely unmoving until his brain informed him that his ‘assailant’ was in fact a doe and apparently sympathetic. Apparently. He cleared his throat, unlocked his limbs and sidled slightly away from her.

“T-this is easily one of my most terrible days… and you madam, have not made it any better. It’s rude to sneak up on somebody like that.”

"Sneak up?" the voice exclaimed, astonished, "oh my, that had not been my intention - was it rude? I am so sorry if I startled you, you see, you were standing right there." It fell and flowed, wound around the syllables, absolutely apologetic, almost pleading. The face had not changed.

Nose-in-the-air wished he had a hole to crawl into. His gaze kept skittering from her face to the ground and back to her face again. There was something incredibly disturbing about the doe. Not that he could pinpoint exactly what it was.

“It was very rude. I was clearly busy… doing… things...” His voice began trailing away into a mumble. “But I suppose I can forgive you if you really didn’t mean it…”

"Forgive me?" the phrase, repeated, danced across an octave, "oh, yes, please! I didn't, not at all, mean it, it was utterly, utterly an accident. Yes, of course, you were clearly busy, I should have seen it - yes, it is very good, very good, of you to forgive me." The face had caught up, to an extent, with the voice - or at least, slowly there spread what could pass for an earnest smile. Her teeth were very white.

The buck just stared at her with a look bordering on panic. He very slowly began backing up; forcing his expression into what he hoped was both thoughtful and apologetic.

“Quite forgiven. Now if you will excuse me… I have things to… tend to. Always busy.” He laughed, or tried to. It was more of a cough. As earnest as her smile tried to be; prey was always very good at sensing a predator.

"Oh dear, you are leaving? But it was so very nice, so, so nice." The voice suggested dolorousness, and, certainly, the facsimile of a smile had faded, but perhaps the face was incapable of dolorousness, it only looked very solemn, very, very, solemn, as the green eyes, large and luminous, reflected everything with each serious nod. "It is goodbye, then? But - oh, I know! You have been so very good, I must give you a parting gift!"

“A… gift?” Nose-in-the-air paused in his retreat. Despite himself he was quite curious as to what the gift might be. He had never received one before. “Well, if you must.” He managed to pull himself together and give semi-firm nod of his head. “But make it quick. I have important matters to intend to.” No he didn’t.

"It won't take a moment, I just have to - oh!" The voice rose in delighted surprise - the head followed by turning towards the berry bush, not quite, an impartial passer-by might observed, the correct order of events. A smooth bound - as if she rippled instead of leapt, and she was perched just so, hooves balanced on the prickly shrub. The head leant in, a leisurely but unceasing motion, the white teeth were bared - carefully, very carefully, a bright cluster was retrieved from the very centre of the thick leaves.

"There!" the voice was triumphant, and the smile, or something like it, had returned to the face. The berries were not, perhaps, quite ripe.

The buck watched her; his curiosity slowly shriveling up as she went straight to the berry bush. He watched her now with a somewhat sour expression as she plucked the berries out. The unripe berries. The berries he would have eaten already if he had wanted them… which he didn’t.

“Oh…” Yet she seemed so pleased with herself, or so it seemed. Honestly, her smile terrified him, as did everything else about her.

Nose cleared his throat. “… thanks. That’s very… generous.” He forced a smile and very very slowly approached, stretching his neck out as if to keep her away from the rest of his body. “I’ll uh… take my gift and be on my way. If you just want to put it down… or pass it over.”

"Oh, no, no," she put the cluster down, but nowhere that would have been convenient for him to reach, "I'll give you a much better gift than that!" Plucking precisely one berry from the bunch, she held it delicately between her teeth, and once more rippled - this time to the tree upon which the offending bird still perched.

Front hooves poised halfway up the trunk, head pointed up, straight at the bird. Still as a carving - then from her throat, jaws unmoving, a strange series of clicks. The bird cocked its head, hopped, twittered. The wings flapped.

He retracted his head and shuffled his hooves, looking longingly to the side as he imagined frolicking to freedom. With a sigh he looked back at the doe, feeling oddly trapped by her presence.

What was she doing? The buck frowned. How was feeding the bird that had stolen from him a gift? This was preposterous. Nose took a slow, deliberate step backwards. If she just stayed the way she was, she might not even notice his leaving.

"Don't move," the words were low and monotone, but only slightly muffled issuing from her perfectly still frame, "you'll ruin it. Not long now..." The clicks resumed with barely a pause, the interlude did not seem to have put off the feathered target. It fluttered on the branch, stepped off, winged downwards to investigate. Whipped its head to a side to eye the bright berry. Chirped. Darted an open beak forward to -

- it was a swift motion, but at once terribly slow. A single motion, a fluid line, as she parted the two gleaming rows and lunged...

The snap resounded.

[Ozzy Osbourne moment! Nose can officially faint now. XD;;]

He had stilled as ordered, watching with wide eyes as her jaws came together and rang with that terrifyingly definite snap.

Goodbye bird.

Nose-in-the air opened his mouth to make a small, inarticulate sound of horror before he crumpled to the ground in a dead faint.

[There he goes…]
