When a Hunter Council member made an appointment, it did not matter if it was a trainee or full-fledged Hunter or even a Hunter assistant: their commands were second to no-one.

So when Caelius requested to see Reine a day post-mission, despite injuries, despite everything, it would have been an instant death sentence to say no.

And there he was, sitting in the usual room, in his spot along the rounded table. A small pile of texts had joined the original one he was reading - they all had biblical references such as 'Revelations' - apparently the Death Hunter was secretly religious, though now did not seem a good time to ask about his pastimes.

But Reine was not the only other person in the room. Robert was there too.

Robert had no idea why he was here.

He had gotten a text, and it was suspiciously brief. There was nothing to do but show up, despite how every muscle in his body was going NO, FAKE ILLNESS, FAKE DEATH. FAKE PREGNANCY. JUST DON'T GO.

Robert's footfalls had weighed a thousand pounds every step he took to Caelius' office.

But now he was standing here, staring at Caelius with a slightly vacant look on his face, as his mind wandered into the realm of foggy blurs. If one could put a sign on Robert's face right now, it would be a broken, blinking sign clearly indicataing 'VACANCY'.

Reine checked the clock on her cellphone every few seconds, making sure that this time, she didn't disobey direct orders. Eva had clued her in after the mission, explaining that Caelius had yelled through their headsets to stop attacking, and that had left her feeling extremely stupid.

Perhaps she should have dug through the muck to retrieve her headset- she would do so next time, if the situation ever came up again. Silently, she was praying that it wouldn't. At any rate, the treatment for her injury and the long, long bath subsequently had cheered her up a great deal, and there was a little spring in her step even as she walked to Caelius' office.

It did not last. She knocked on his door, then entered, to see someone she thought she could have avoided for longer. The small smile on her face instantly turned into a grimace (just add Robert), and she glared at him, before straightening up again and trying to look professional.

"Sir," she greeted him, nodding politely, even if the ache in her jaw had come back just from looking at him. Hopefully he wouldn't hit the other cheek this time...

If Caelius was expecting some sort of reaction, he did not show it, instead, pulling out two manila folders from his stack of work. Each of them were reasonably sized, and on the end of the tabs had very obvious labels - "ROBERT MORRIS", "REINE WALKER". He pulled out two sheets from both, and flipped through them.

"Robert, average build, average intelligence, absent from several missions - " Here, he gave the trainee an even stare  before turning back to the paper at hand - "and oddly enough, lived in the same neighbourhood as one Reine Walker." Caelius did not bother to open the other file, but instead, put everything back into one neat stack. "Which leads us to this... complication. Robert Morris, a trainee lacking in motivation, under suspension for general negligence of duties. Reine Walker, a trainee lacking restraint, under suspension for disobeying direct orders. Unfortunately, with the next candidate program scheduled soon, I find myself with very little to no patience dealing with errant trainees. So here is a proposition."

He did not wait for the two to even bother exchanging glances. "Follow me."

They walked in silence for the entire journey until they were both on the training grounds outside. The Death Hunter glared at a couple of Hunters doing practice rounds until they de-summoned their weapons and left the scene. The field was empty now.

"This will be an easy exercise." Caelius took a half-resting stance, folding his hands at chest level. "You two will spar with each other. Whomever wins, that is the last person standing, will be lifted from their suspension. Should you decide to back out I will be more than happy to carry out the punishment for both of you. I'm sure you remember very well what happens to disobeying trainees."

And there it was, just like that. Fight each other to survive, the other gets the short end of the stick. The Death Hunter said nothing more and simply waited

She kept her eyes down as Caelius spoke. Firstly, to show respect; secondly, to keep herself from looking at Robert. It was true, though- she'd acted out of line, and she supposed she'd been called over for whatever her 'real' punishment would be.

So it was with slightly creepy sparkly eyes that Reine looked at Caelius when he announced that they would be sparring with each other. Any chance to take Robert down was appreciated; fighting would just increase the distance between them. Perhaps it would even dissuade him from approaching her in the future. Hadn't he talked about wanting to 'protect' her? She'd show him she didn't need any of that.

And if she could win...

"Thank you, sir," she said, saluting Caelius.

Ally, I'm counting on you.

Summoning her weapon, Reine held it out.

There was a resigned expression in Robert's face when he was ordered to spar with Rober-no, Reine. Ugh. So ridiculous. He watched her prepare, shaking his head in dismay.

"This is what you wanted, isn't it, kitten?" He pulled a coin out of his pocket, placed it on his thumb, and flipped it in the air. The long doubled bladed weapon shimmered gold above him as it exploded from within the coin, and his hand reached up to pull it down and flip it in his grip.

You feel different about this one.

Don't start with me, Jazzy. Robert growled internally. I ain't in the mood.

He took a defensive stance, his brow furrowed deeply. Maybe, if she kicked his a**, she'd feel better about things. Maybe, it would be enough - and she wouldn't be so stupid about things anymore.

Maybe, this spar would get her focused enough to keep on track. Which could save her life.

He couldn't manage to care that Caelius could hear them. His words came from the heart. "Come at me, Roberta." He murmured under his breath, his lips twitching as if they wanted to smile. "Maybe I love you just enough to let you win."

There were a lot of maybes floating around.

She smirked.

"I'd rather spar with someone else, really," she replied, running her hand along the edge of the blade. Whatever his weapon was, it was nowhere as cool as her own, a thought that was met with Alynthe's assent.

But even though she'd been trying to keep her cool, the words she caught him say made her blood boil.

"I don't need you to let me win," she hissed. "You just never ********* get it, do you?" This was.. this was why she hated him. Because he always had to look down on her. Because he felt like he had to protect her. Because he wouldn't let her stand on her own, even if she could.

"I don't need your love either," she mocked, and then attacked him, even though the blade barely nicked him.

focus, darling, focus; if you want to we can kill him, yessss.

Robert looked infinitely tired of listening to her smack talk him. He stood there, almost boredly, listening to her spew the same old thing over and over.

"Yeah, yeah. I get it. You don't want me, you don't need me, you're so independent and awesome and blah blah blah. Get over yourself, Roberta. Just because you think you're the s**t, doesn't mean you don't need people in your life."

Her nick was met with a wince, but the wince was followed by a grin. He'd never, in his entire life, thought he would lift a finger to hurt Roberta.

But, he guessed this wasn't Roberta, anymore. And he guessed that life was over. This, whatever it was, was hell.

And in hell, Robert hit girls.

His scythe flipped in his more experienced hands, slicing right across her stomach with repeated cuts.

"I hope you can protect yourself, kitten. Because down here, you'll need it."

"It just means I don't need you."

Hopefully hearing that hurt him as much as the the cut he'd managed to make on her stomach; quick, apply pressure- her right hand moved to attempt to staunch the more-than-trickle of blood as her left swung at him again in a neat slash, drawing blood as well.

How cute, they matched, did Robert want to go get matching frilly pink dresses and drink out of matching teacups, too?

Yes, yes Robert did.

Every cut, every slash was met with nothing more than a wince, and he parried one thrust, before bringing the side of the batleth up against her head.

"When did you ever really need me, kitten? You were too busy ABANDONING ME to need me, now WEREN'T YOU."

If they were going to play dirty, Robert was ready to get in the mud.

His words caught her by surprise- no, she should have expected that, and she found herself faltering for just a second- just enough to almost miss.

"I never did. You're right. Finally getting smarter, are we?"

Robert's swift, twirling swings slowed to a stop. He hadn't expected her to agree with him. He didn't know why he hadn't expected it, but somewhere, deep down, he had always denied that she really never loved him. That little, tiny part of his heart that had always held out for her.

That little nick she managed with her blade echoed the nick in his heart that her words cut. And that little part of his heart.. died.

"I really didn't believe that was true, kitten." He whispered, standing tall and dark, his batleth by his side.

The perfect target.

"You should."

As if to convince herself she closed her eyes as she slashed again, the jagged blade leaving a deep cut on his arm. The shards of ice from her charged attack wrapped around the wound she'd left, then shattered into a million crystals.

She felt like that sound echoed Robert's heart, perfectly, the way he was looking at her- but this was no time to be weak, to pity him. The fight wasn't over.

The attack brought him to one knee. He couldn't even try to block it, he just felt the dig of the blade in his arm, and the pricks within. Shattering, everywhere, bringing him down.

His darkened eyes still managed to remain on her, even as she closed hers to deliver the blow.

"You're doing it wrong, kitten." He whispered hoarsely, pushing himself up. His scythe rose, slowly cutting across her neck, barely managing to scratch her - it was only to make a point.

"If you want to live, you can't close your eyes, and you can't hold back. Aim for the neck."

Was he giving her advice on how to kill him?!

"Lecturing me even on your deathbed?"

Truth be told, she wouldn't let him die; not for Petra's sake. Mission objectives, as stated by Caelius, had also specified 'last one standing', hadn't they?

"You should have stayed where you were," she snarled.
