Let's not forget. Johnson won his first title in the old car. His second title came in a year where Sprint Cup transitioned and alternated between the old car and vastly reconfigured new car. His third and fourth titles came in the new car, and his most recent title came with yet another change, transitioning from the wing back to the spoiler.
People will bring up that without the Chase, Johnson might have only won one or two of those titles. It's a fair argument and I have been no fan of the Chase format. Everyone else has had an ample opportunity too. It's about impossible to be on top each time after any ten race stretch, let alone to have to run an entire season before that.
So while I am no fan of Jimmie Johnson, it would be foolish to deny what he has accomplished.
In closing, I want to give a quote that appeared from a recent interview with the five time champion:
Quote:
That's the unfortunate part, winning races, you get that taste in your mouth and you want to keep winning races. And then you win championships. You want to keep winning them. You just have this desire to just keep winning. I don't want to give anyone else a chance to hold that trophy.
Jimmie Johnson is a true racer, and one of the finest NASCAR champions of all time.
