Robert had missed some big stupid party. It hadn't sounded like a party, because no one in this God-forsaken place knew how to really party, anyway. From what he'd heard, he hadn't missed much - just a bunch of new kids waking up and being introduced into their new life as slaves to the man.
In fact, Robert had spent most of the day in his dorm. Brooding. Contemplating going out, and doing the one thing he was too scared to do.
Just .. just go check the pods, he told himself. She's probably still asleep. You're worrying over nothing. Just because some kids woke up doesn't mean she did.
He'd gone back and forth all day, trying to convince himself to stop being a chicken s**t. He'd failed, until his shift came. By then, it was late, and work had to get done whether he was scared or not.
So he trudged into the labs, trying not to look straightaway at the feeds, as if postponing the moment as long as possible.

It was positively.. blissful. Just amazing. Unlike the odd humming in the cove, the machinery in the lab hummed with energy, life, and Reine would swear, probably also rainbows and sparkles.
This.. was an environment she knew and was comfortable in. Granted, different labs had different protocols, but Reine was sure she'd be able to work with that.
Aaaaahhh.
She wanted to touch alllll the things.
« That's what she said~~ »
All the...
Reine blinked, only just noticing the other figure in the room. It couldn't be- oh no. No. For one, she didn't want to see him. And asides from that, who let him into the labs, to begin with? It was like shoving a bull in a china shop. A very expensive china shop.
Swearing under her breath, Reine backed away before he could catch a glimpse of her, only to crash into an entire rack of test tubes, smashing them.

It was the crash that had ripped Robert's attention from the monitors - oh yes, he'd given in and taken a look, only to feel his stomach churn when the one monitor he was used to looking at now held a different face. Maybe she'd just been moved, he convinced himself. This didn't mean she was awake. This didn't mean- And there was the crash. He turned fluidly, a twirl that betrayed his dancer's background almost embarrassingly, and looked at the missing face. Eyes open, looking up at him in.. in what? Horror? Anger? Just plain disgust? His lips parted, the breath was sucked in, and he looked ready to say something. But the words just wouldn't come out. So instead, Robert just stared at Roberta, his Roberta, flesh and blood right in front of him, with the following look on his face.

"Uh," she said, still stunned like a deer in headlights. "Hi?"
From the moment she'd heard from Jerry about Robert and Petra until just a few seconds ago, she'd managed to convince herself that the Robert and Petra in Phoenix must have been another Robert and another Petra.
And yet she hadn't dared to look them up- she didn't want any confirmation, neither the 'yes' nor the 'no.' Now, though, faced with the truth, Reine had no idea how to react. If she closed her eyes now and ran away, she would still see Robert's face in her mind.
Forever Robert's face. Haunting her. And then Petra, who she hadn't seen in.. had it been ten years? Petra, who was supposed to have been safe and happy with Robert. Stupid, stupid Robert. He just.. he just had to ruin everything.
« Is the big man scaring you, sweetie? Need an adult, do we now? »
The odd ticklish sensation whenever Alynthe spoke creeped her back to her senses, and Reine shuddered. Not scared, she thought back firmly. Not scared. I just didn't want to see him.
"Didn't mean to disturb. Bye."
She was hoping for a quick escape- considering he was on lab duty, it was technically his job to clean up the glass shards, wasn't it? Casting a quick glance at him, she tried her best to blink back tears and think happy thoughts, where 'happy' was most certainly not 'Robert's face'.

Roberta's voice made Robert's head swim. It was painful, and his eyes squinted as his brain tried to rationalize how he was hearing her now, and not in some torturous reminder of the past. Her, standing here, in front of him, walking away-
"WHAT."
He hadn't meant to scream it, but as soon as she tried to run everything had come into disturbing focus. There she was, running like always, and it kick-started Robert into motion just as it had every time she ran. He stumbled, crunching glass beneath his feet, and almost fell when he reached to grab her and stop her from leaving.
"You can't - I mean just don't - wait - please - you need - I need - just - uuuuughhh."
And then he did fall, his knees dropping down on the broken glass, and big arms wrapped around her little form.
"Goddamnit, kitten." He whimpered like a child. "God. Damnit."
It was hard to tell just what the emotion that shook his voice was, yet.

She froze the minute he touched her, even though her mental voice was screaming at her to run awaaaaayyyy RUN AWAY NOW. Instead she flopped over like a ragdoll kitten, reluctantly letting him pull her into a hug.
"Stop this, R.." She couldn't even bring herself to say his name.
"Just.. stop it. I don't want to know you. I don't... need anything from you. Or her."
What hurt her most was that she'd said goodbye to everything. She'd been prepared to leave them behind when she accepted the offer- and what about them? Why had they even said yes? And why had they woken up before she had?
"Damn you," she said coldly, starting to wrestle her way out of his grip. She wasn't above kicking him in the face if she needed to- he deserved it.
"Damn you for even being here, for not doing what you were supposed to, for always ALWAYS BEING STUPID I DON'T EVEN WHAT WERE YOU THINKING WHY DID YOU HAVE TO RUIN EVERY ********** THING ALWAYS--"
« calm down, preciousssssss, or you're going to get into more trouble~ »
I don't need you to tell me that! But she had, really- and she paused, taking deep breaths to cool herself down. No point getting mad here, just... she wanted to get away from all this as soon as possible.
"Let go of me," she said, as coldly as she could manage. "Get. Off."

The sound of her voice growing cold was so familiar to her. The problem was that he wasn't familiar with hearing her like that - it had always been Petra whose voice had grown cold and distant. Not Roberta. Never Roberta.
The sound of her voice growing cold felt familiar, and foreign at the same time. It froze him to the bone, and it granted her the one thing she wanted - his arms fell limp to her sides.
But it didn't last long.
Roaring as he stood to his feet, he loomed over her in agonizing, burning anger.
"Damn ME? ME? YOU'RE THE ONE WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO STAY ASLEEP! What are you THINKING, kitten? You have NO ******** IDEA how dangerous this place is. You should get back in that pod right now and-"
He stopped explaining it, and just plucked her up in his arms and carried her back to the pods.

It didn't take long for her to lose it again- what was it about Robert, that always got to her? Except he only ever pushed the wrong buttons.
"WHAT ABOUT YOU, YOU ************** LET YOURSELF DO THIS AND WHY DID YOU DRAG PETRA ALONG SO MUCH FOR PROTECTING HER GOD WHY DID I EVEN WHAT WTF I---- WHAT ROBERT PUT ME THE ********** DOWN YOU ************ *****!!"
She was kicking and screaming; he was likely to have bruises by the next day. Maybe someone would hear her, or--
« ask for help if you need it, princess, I'll be your knight anyday~ »
Oh right. OH RIGHT. She had no idea how to use this thing, but that probably made her all the more dangerous. Summoning Alynthe, she held the blade to his neck; considering his arms were somewhat.. preoccupied with holding her, there was no way he could attack back without letting her go.
"I'm warning you," she snarled. "Put me down, or else."
She had a feeling the old 'or else' trick wasn't going to work, but at this point, Reine would resort to almost anything.

Despite all the physical abuse Robert was retaining from the girl in his arms, he truly did not believe she would ever actually hurt him. Nevertheless, when the blade dropped down to his neck, he stopped walking towards the pods, and gently let her down to her feet. It was time to stop ignoring her, he supposed.
"Kitten. Roberta. Please, baby, I need you to stop spouting this nonsense and listen carefully." His hands rested on her shoulders, keeping her looking in his direction. "I don't know what exactly you think about this place, but it ain't as easy as you're making it sound. You don't let yourself get put here. And DON'T talk about your sister like she can't take care of herself. You DON'T know the s**t she can do now. You don't know how HARD she's been fighting. For us. FOR YOU!" He was shaking by now, angered far beyond reason. Every time he tried to calm down, the well of anger surged once more.
"Listen. Just. LISTEN." Was he screaming at her, or himself? "We need to calm down or something. Please. Kitten. I can't let this happen. I can't let this be the first time I've seen you since the last time I saw you. I CAN'T, OKAY?" Another deep breath. "Okay, please. I am begging you here."

"You weren't supposed to see me again," she replied, dusting herself off and glaring at him.
"You weren't supposed to. I don't care what this place is, it was my emergency escape route from both of you. From everything you ever did." Why didn't they get that, either? She had no idea what they'd 'been through', or what they'd been fighting, but she was sure it hadn't been for her, because.. because.
"I made a choice to come to the island. A choice. That means you must have, as well. You picked an island over Petra, even though you were supposed to be with her even though you two were supposed to be together and happy forever but NO, YOU, Robert, you had to ruin everything."
She wouldn't let herself cry in front of him. Not him.
"And now you're ruining this for me, too? You know what happened on the island. You know everything I went through- and I was okay with it- but now, you're telling me that everything I did to get away from you two.. was for nothing?"
All the times she'd died, all the hurts she'd suffered, the friends she'd made who turned out to be people she'd been running away from.. it felt like a cruel joke. Like all her purpose had been snatched away by these two idiots who just couldn't stay out of her life.
"Just get away from me." She held the swordbreaker up in front of her, ready to slash at him if she needed. "Go. Go to Petra. I am begging you here."

Roberta's words were sharper than the blade she threatened him with. Every insinuation made him wince in pain. That's all she ever wanted to do, even before they were in this place. Run away. Leave him. Run away. Abandon the people who loved her. Run away. He'd been sick of it then, and he was sick of it now. Where once he'd thought if he could just kiss her, once, she would stay... now the idea made him sick to his stomach.
He couldn't listen to her spew this venom at him anymore, when all he was guilty for was loving her too much.
"OH. WOW. SORRY, KITTEN. DIDN'T REALIZE I WAS PISSING ON YOUR VACATION." He shrieked, finally letting her go. "What was I THINKIN', fighting my a** off to keep you and all the other people in the ********' world safe? How could I be so SELFISH? When OBVIOUSLY ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT?"
He didn't realize he was crying, but it didn't matter. He was too mad to care that his face was littered with tears.
He took a step forward and bent in close, ignoring the blade pointed at him and brushing it away to be nose to nose with the girl.
"I am with Petra." He hissed in cold blood. "I am very happily with her, Roberta. Or should I say, sister-in-law."

"What were you thinking, indeed." She was visibly trembling, now- whether in rage or fear, but she tried to put up a brave front, anyway.
"When have you ever seriously thought about anything, Robert? Who asked you to fight for anyone? Huh? All you had to do was take care of Petra, keep her happy, have a bunch of kids with her, die happy. But you had to barge into my room and-- and kiss me, all drunk? I should have known then I couldn't trust you with Petra." All these accusations.. they made sense, but she couldn't accept them, and the only thing she could do was deflect them with accusations of her own, pretending that hearing those words didn't hurt.
She couldn't accept him, either- or wouldn't. And she wasn't about to just stand here and get yelled at by him.
"The one thing you managed to do right, then," she snarled back, jerking away from him. "But get this. You're not my anything. You lost that when you decided to come here- you and Petra both."

Why did she have to mention that night.
All of the anger that fueled Robert's rage drained out of him, along with the color in his face.
"How can you say that?" He whispered hoarsely. "How can you ******** say that? What the ******** has Petra ever done to deserve that s**t, Roberta? You wanna hate me? Fine, I get it. But are you seriously standing here tellin' me that when your sister finds out you're awake.." His arm reached out and took hers. "Your ********' twin sister, kitten. You're not gonna be happy to see her?"
He looked at the girl in front of him, and felt a cold stab of fear when he couldn't recognize the soul in her eyes.

"Would she be, Robert?"
She shook him off forcibly, glaring. "Don't touch me."
"You know what you did. You know it, and the only way you could have made up for it was by going back to her. Did she deserve what you did? Huh? All I did was remove myself from the equation- how is that bad?"
It wasn't Petra- though she didn't want to see her twin, either, didn't want to deal with how she might react. Robert always had to make her feel like a co-conspirator, an accomplice, right from the start when they'd met each other and he didn't want to play with Petra.
Except in the end, he'd been the one to play with her feelings.
"I think we're done here."

And suddenly, it felt like everything that had been turned upside down suddenly came back into focus, again.
Roberta asked him if Petra would be happy to see her sister. And the truth was, it was clear Robert did think that she would. But why? After what he'd done, after what they'd done..?
Except, it wasn't exactly a very fresh memory anymore, was it?
At least.. not for Robert and Petra. Not for the two who'd hashed out their pain, their sorrows, and come to a clear, defined understanding. To them.. at least, as far as Robert assumed, it was a long, distant, still painful but not dominating, memory.
But to Roberta.. who'd been asleep all this time..
It was still fresh.
"You should ask her." Robert murmured quietly, letting her shake him off. "You can't run away anymore, kitten. I know that's what you want, I know that's what you're used to. But you're out of choices, now. We're all in this together, whether you like it or not. And personally, I think she does want to see you. Because she loves you. Just like I do."
He stepped away, out of her personal space. "She needs you, Roberta. I need you. And, uh, you should probably get used to it, because.."
He held his coat up, matching it with hers. "We kind of work together."
