"Shu, Jian. I appreciate the company, but I really don't think this was necessary."
The ghoul glanced down at the minis who flanked her on either side, ears pricked and alert as they led her down the path. It's like having a pair of bodyguards, Xiu sighed, but she was smiling. It was really nice to have their company again, she had to admit. Though she had only been away from home for a couple of months, she had sincerely missed the Dream Blossom and Nightmare Flower.
...But it really wasn't necessary for them to come out with her right now! It wasn't as if she was going somewhere dangerous--all she was doing was going to her favourite cafe to pick up something for breakfast, but for whatever reason, the pair had insisted on tagging along. Arashi, on the other hand, had preferred to stay home and nap (as was expected of a cat, she supposed).
"It'll only take me a few minutes," The baku promised when they arrived, "I'll just buy something and bring it back to the dorms to eat, I suppose." She pulled the door to the cafe open, waiting until Shu and Jian slipped in before she followed. Stepping up towards the counter, she eyed the baked goods contemplatively, toying with the end of her braid as she tried to decide what to get.

The door opened and a bell rang over the door loudly, and kept ringing. Three tall males had just stepped in, but the first one was so broad through the shoulders that the other two had to move to be noticed. "So we're just gonna stop here before taking me back to school?" a familiar voice asked. "Kinda... cutesy for you two, don't you think?"
"Don't diss it, boil, this place has cinnamon rolls bigger than your head," the biggest man said, grinning wickedly. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" he asked, catching sight of a very familiar looking baku girl. "Isn't that--"
"Xiu?" Roch asked, looking over.

Xiu's tail gave a little flick as she heard someone say her name. Looking up, she glanced over her shoulder to look at the speaker. Her eyes visibly lit up. "Roch!"
Abandoning the desserts, she hurried up the the boil, her minis right on her heels. She reached up to give him a quick one-armed hug before pulling back. And the first thing she noticed was--
--...what was that on his arm? ...Was that a tattoo?
However, the baku didn't comment on it--not yet, anyways. She turned to look at Austin and Vegas then, recognizing the former from when they last met. Clutching her hands together in front of her, she bowed to the both of them. "I, ah...hello! I'm Xiu-Ying. And you two are...?" Well, she had met Austin before, though she wasn't entirely sure if he knew that the baku that night had been her. At the very least, unlike Roch, he had known that she wasn't any regular old pet.

"Dad, Granddad," Roch said, slapping each in turn with the back of his hand before moving to stand between her and the two. "Xiu, uh... what are you doing here?"
Stupid, stupid, stupid! Just look at this place, he thought. "Never mind, I ah, think I know already. We're just here for the cinnamon rolls--"
"We're waiting for The Pumpkin Park to open," Austin said, draping an arm over Roch's shoulders. "It should be open in fifteen or so, you want to come?"
Roch jerked, looking up at his dad incredulously.

"The...The Pumpkin Park?" Xiu echoed, furrowing her brows as she tilted her head and stared up at Austin. What was--oh. That was the amusement park around here, wasn't it? The baku hastily held up both of her hands.
"O-oh, no, that's alright! I'm not really one for rides, and I'd hate to tag along and spoil your fun." As she spoke, Jian had stalked forward towards Roch, sniffing at the reaper warily before staring up at him with those red eyes of his. He looked disapproving.
...But then again, Jian glared at just about everyone--Xiu was convinced that her Nightmare Flower's face was just stuck in that state.

Roch blinked down at the little guy. "Dude, that look doesn't work," he told him, digging through his pockets. "My cat gives it to me ALL the time," he said, pulling out a little baggy of jerky and tugging out the last piece he had left.
"Is this guy yours?" he asked Xiu, taking a bite of the meat and offering the uneaten part to him. "This is how I passed my exams, too. But seriously, you don't--"
"You won't be interfering! Hell, since it IS his sixteenth birthday, I'd think he'd WANT one of his pals along, right?"
Roch jerked. "Jack, it's the fifteenth?" he asked blankly.

Jian eyed the jerky before taking the piece between his teeth with a small snort. That might have been a thank you. Whatever the case, he trotted back to where Xiu and Shu were, dropping the meat in front of the other mini.
Xiu, however, was too distracted to notice what her minis were doing. Her eyes had widened, hand cupped over her mouth. "Roch, today is...?!" When she dropped her hands, her expression looked extremely guilty, her ears drooping.
"I-I'm so sorry! I didn't--I don't have a present! I suppose I could make something when my arm is one hundred percent better, but..." The baku paused as she finally took in the rest of what Austin said. Well, he had a point there. "I mean, if you want the company, I...I could always tag along, I suppose?"

"He'd love that," Austin said before Roch could speak. "After we have some breakfast, that is. Have you gotten yours yet?" he asked her, grinning.
"Ah, you don't gotta get me anything, seriously!" Roch said, a bit of red creeping up the back of his neck. "Besides, how would you have known when I didn't even remember? Hell, I didn't even bother telling people about my first birthday, I probably wouldn't have mentioned this one, either--"
He blinked as Austin rubbed the side of his head again. "Would you STOP that? You creeper," he complained, shoving at the hand.

"I...I suppose that I can come along, then? And no, sir, I haven't had breakfast yet." She cast another glance towards the sweets behind the glass, wondering just what she should get. Something that wasn't too heavy, she supposed, if she was expected to go on rides later on.
...Jack, it had such a long time since she had gone to an amusement park.
"I'm getting you a present." Xiu glanced at Roch, and the tone that she spoke with indicated that there was no room for debate either. However, she did crack a smile at the small exchange between father and son. It was a somewhat amusing relationship--she definitely couldn't speak so easily to her own parents.
Eying the lineup, she gesture towards some of the tables. "Would you like me to line up and buy everything while you guys sit down? I should have enough seeds on me right now." Despite the fact she had a new outfit now, Xiu also still had the obi. She pat the spot where she kept her wallet, as if checking to see how much she had brought with her.

"Hell no!" Roch said. "These two played this trick on me the other day, so they're paying for EVERYTHING today," he told her, jabbing a thumb at them. Austin snorted.
"You're the one that actually bought the whole 'out of gas money' line," Austin said shamelessly. "So we got a little show out of it. And by the way? Bones is gonna have your a** for that little sliding problem you've picked up."
"Just get me a cinnamon roll," Roch said. "Bones can yell at me later," he added, clearly showing he knew EXACTLY what he was doing wrong.

"A trick?" Xiu echoed, her eyes widening in curiosity. She turned to glance at Austin and Vegas for a moment, and then she slid into the line-up. She still needed to decide what she was going to buy, but...hmm. All the sweets looked pretty tempting, honestly. Maybe she would just go with a cinnamon bun as well.
As she waited in the line-up, the baku found her gaze drifting back to Roch's arm. Her gaze lingered on the tattoo for a moment, and then she looked away without saying anything. A few moments passed in silence, and then, "Roch? Why you do have a tattoo?"
Her tone was neutral. Honestly, she thought the design looked nice, but...was he even old enough to get a tattoo?

"Because I asked Lattice for it," Roch said, grinning. "Ain't it gorgeous? I wanted to get this cuz--" He stopped, looking at his dad and granddad with a slight frown. "Well, cuz I wanted her to see me coming next time," he said blandly, shoving his hands into his pockets. "You know... in case something's happened, I wanted her to know we were comin'."
"What... other than stuff from her group, would happen to an Engraver?" Austin asked curiously. "And kid, if you think I'll let you get involved with Engraver business, you got another thought coming."
"Not her clan," Roch said. "Just... things. Xiu, you want a cinnamon bun too?"
"We got ten minutes!" Vegas called from where he'd taken over one of the delicate looking tables, making it look like a toy set. "So pick and get movin'!"
"At least tell me what you want, you annoying old geezer!" Austin called back.
"One of those cinnamon buns, hell boy, why you think I chose this place?"

Xiu tilted her head at Roch's response. She hadn't been a part of that rescue group, so she had no idea what had transpired. If she knew, though, her disapproval probably would have lessened a great deal. As it was, she simply shook her head, looking exasperated. "I...guess it looks nice," She admitted, "But to get a tattoo at your age..."
Well, at least Lattice had been the one to do it.
Blinking at the question, the baku nodded. "That's why I'm lining up. I didn't know what to get, but...I figured that I might as well buy what they're famous for."
That, and it seemed like they were in a rush. Her gaze flickered towards Vegas when he called out, and she offered him a polite--and vaguely meek--smile before turning back to look at the counter.

"Xiu, seriously, if you got plans--or a date--or something, you don't have to--" Roch started out. "I mean, this is just a last minute thing, and I doubt that--I mean, if I was--"
He couldn't say it. He jackin' well couldn't say it, and he had been SO pissed at Lizzy when she did something just like it. He ran a hand over his face, feeling like such a hypocrite. Here his dad was, dragging her on a jackin' DATE--although did it count as a date if parents were involved? No... then it was more of a--well, he didn't know for sure, he'd never been taken places with friends by his dad, but obviously nothing could happen that would make it date-like. Not even hand holding.
Ahh, this sucked. But still there was this stupid little smile on his face as he BS'd his way through letting himself drag her to the amusement park without guilt.
"We'll take four of your cinnamon rolls, extra frosting," he dad said, jerking him back to reality.

Xiu blinked. "A date? And no, really, don't worry about it! It is your birthday, after all, so I feel terrible that I didn't have anything prepared for you." She paused, her eyes suddenly widening. Oh! "Unless you don't want me to come along!" Maybe he had only wanted to spend the day with his father and grandfather? She really didn't want to intrude.
Her gaze snapped up as Austin ordered. He didn't just order one for her too, did he? In the case that he did, Xiu withdraw her wallet from her obi, counting out the number of seeds that she owed him. Once she had them counted out in her hands, the baku looked up at him, wide-eyed.
"Sir?" She held up her hand.
