So, in a recent trip to the local store for some gaming, I've been told that it's now fairly common practice for people to use army lists that have been posted online after being successful in tournaments, such as the apparently infamous "Leafblower" list.
What're your thoughts on pre-written lists? I always thought half the fun was in creating your own lists and deciding what works and what doesn't, I've got a whole folder of lists I've written up and tested on Vassal...

A bit extreme there Paul, but yeah, that's about how it goes these days. Tournament reports on Dakka Dakka are fairly conclusive on this as well and the army list review forums are stamping down hard on creative lists. It doesn't help that the army lists are written with a few good units in mind and the rest being clutter to fill the pages.

In all honesty, I directly insult those who use pre-made lists. My only exception are complete newbies to the game who need help learning to build a list in the first place but other than that, despite faction choice, if you can't sit down for a few minutes with a pen, paper and choice codex to make your own list, you are pathetic.
I have seen armies win battles that were quite literally hand picked by decision of 'favourite units' rather than what will do best because the person playing the army had a good head on his shoulders with the ability to make tactical decisions, play up the strengths of his army as well as the weaknesses of his opponent and most importantly, didn't forget the mission objectives.
Not to say that you can't try out some ones list for curiosity's sake but do that in your spare time with a 1on1 match between friends. Don't start down loading lists and using them in tournaments because it isn't your decisions that win the game. It'd be like entering a painting contest with someone else's entry and taking credit for it! lol

And another downside to using pre-made lists: the list may require you to play a style you're not familiar with at all, and you may royally trip up, letting the opponent that experimented with lists and found one they liked beat the living s**t out of the former.
That's why I don't use 'em.

Heck, that's how a lot of people pick their armies in the first place, because they like the look of a certain specific mini and then base all their purchases on that.

That's how I started out. Loved how the Space Wolves looked and got right into it. To this day, eleven years after I first started my SW army still uses effectively the same units because they are my favourites and I've learned how to use them effectively. Same goes for my other armies, I didn't worry about what was most powerful in the book, it was just what I liked and so long as I was happy with what I had, it was game time! lol

I agree with you, Dark Reaper, that they should be used mainly for newbies to the game, otherwise just sit down with the Core book and codex and write one up yourself. I had to start that way and I have a decent army to fill out still and I don't mind it. Plus, you learn more of your armies tactics when you have to compare them to one another when boiling down a list for a 1500 point army. I started out with the Tau because I like rail-guns and that they actually understand their tech. Chaos and the Empire just seem to be too self-loathing to really get into...

I think you all need to take a step back and have a time out. Some of the reactions posted here are grossly overblown and out of context as if it is the end of the hobby.

I for one don't like using WAAC tactics, I'm more of a fluff guy. I mean I'm using a purely infantry Imperial Guard army at the mo as it's a project I've been working on for a few years. I don't win much, but I enjoy the game nonetheless.

Lady Blodwynn I think you all need to take a step back and have a time out. Some of the reactions posted here are grossly overblown and out of context as if it is the end of the hobby. emotion_facepalm I understand your concern, and realize that a lot of that mess is aimed at me, and I will rationalize: My main beef is with the tournament community and the assholes it generates. Their lists being picked up and used by other people because they're seen as highly successful is part of that fallout. Former comment redacted to reduce ill will.
