HELLO

WELCOME TO THE INSTRUCTOR & STAFF BIOGRAPHIES THREAD

Everybody in here works for the Order. For pay? What are you, some kind of communist?! FOR PERSONAL FULFILMENT! Or some other complex personal reason nobody else will ever understand or care about.

The first six posts here are about Lorika's three main characters, Lorika, Cressa and Jessie. After that comes the NPC staff members - anybody is free to write these characters if they require them, but most people don't, so no pressure either way, whatever, BE FREE, BE MERRY!

High Priestess: Lorika

Age: 22

Height: 5 foot 8 inches

Race: Gaia-native Human

Though Lorika did not found the Order, she grew to prominence as a vocal and spirited leader during the First Sentinel War, and was chosen by the Overseer as his favoured and most talented disciple. Since then she has led the Order in good times and bad, and, thankfully, to victory more often than defeat.

Before, I might have told you a bit about her past, but recently Lorika has found that her past is no longer very important to her! When she first began leading the Order, she dyed her hair, she wore her robes, she dressed up and acted the part in order to cover up the person she really was - the kind of person she thought nobody would accept. But in the years since then, she has gained a newfound confidence and purpose, irrespective of dependence on the Overseer, irrespective of what she wears. She no longer acts the part - she is the part. And you know what else? She's happy.

Personality:

Lorika is a gentle and kind person who tries to act in the best interests of everyone. She's a good mediator who tries to take everyone's opinions into account before making a decision, but nowadays she's much more decisive than she once was, and loses her temper less often, expressing disappointment instead of anger when things go wrong. She exudes an aura of power and benevolence that can be intimidating to newcomers, but is comforting to those who know her well. She has a sweet, calming smile.

~~~~~~~~~
Powers:
Spiritualism: Master
Hydromancy: Advanced
Lorika is the closest Priestess to the Overseer and has perfected the channelling of his power. She exudes his power. It is part of her. Her powers cover a wide range of holy magic, including healing and shielding. She used to have very few offensive abilities, but her abilities have expanded in this area out of necessity. She can fly short distances and levitate people and objects. Since the Overseer regained his powers, she also has advanced control of water, and all her other powers have intensified as well.
Talents:
Heal Deadly Wounds and Relieve Emotional Strife
The strongest degree of healing, capable of bringing a character back from the brink of death. It can also destroy infestations or foreign objects within the flesh, restoring the person to perfect, whole condition. Recently, Lorika has also discovered how to "take the pain" of other people, but only after coming to terms with her own emotional instability. She tends to use this sparingly, as lifting a person's emotional baggage before they're ready can have unpredictable effects on the person's psyche, and so it usually takes weeks of therapy with her before she attempts it.
Resurrection
The ability to bring a character back from the dead, but only when used within several hours of death.
Sanctuary
A strong holy barrier perpetually exists around the Priestess. Up to two characters can shield themselves within it, but only when physically within two metres of her. This barrier protects from incoming magic, but can only shield from physical blows when it is full to capacity (i.e, there are two people aside from the Priestess inside of it).
Affirmation
A benediction from the High Priestess causes devastating results. This covers Lorika's new range of offensive abilities, which range from blinding enemies to burning them with holy fire. (Note: On normal characters, the sensation of burning or being blinded is only a sensation. On demons or other unholy creatures, they are actually burned and blinded.)
Lorika: Casual Robes
Duties: The High Priestess' duties at the Order no longer include the economic side of things - that's now handled by a hired accountant, and the kitchen staff handle ordering food etc. She does, however, see to the day-to-day administration - she's usually the one mundane problems get brought to, which she deals with fairly. She leads morning prayers and the weekly Overservice and also organises any special events at the Temple. She tends the Overseer's throne room and the altars, and oversees the spiritual development of acolytes, as well as the training of spiritualists and priests. She also runs nightly therapy sessions, usually private (but group sessions can be arranged), for mental and emotional healing.
On the weekend, she sometimes goes into Gambino Town with Evelyn or Fel or Adeline (or all three!). Any free time she has she usually spends with the other women, in the garden, or in meditation. She enjoys reading, writing and singing, but usually avoids the music room to avoid intimidating the acolytes.
Her typical daily schedule looks like this:
5 a.m: Rise, wash, get dressed and ready for the day.
6 a.m: Meditate, or final preparations for services.
8 a.m: Morning prayers, or Overservice on Saturdays.
8:30 a.m/9 on Saturdays: Breakfast, usually in the canteen with the other instructors
9 a.m-12 p.m: Can be found on the second floor, training the
spiritualists and meditating
12 p.m: Walk around the Temple to check on the various departments and deal with any issues.
1/1:30 p.m: Relax in the garden, if there's time.
2 p.m: Lunch, if she feels like it.
2.30 p.m: Might spend some time tending the altar in the main hall, but usually retreats back upstairs quickly. She tends to stay away from the main hall because her presence can unnerve or awe any outsiders who might have stumbled in.
4.30 p.m: Usually goes to chat with Adeline or Cressa on the ground floor. Isn't very busy at this time, so a good time for socialising. If the women aren't available she sometimes checks on the altars in the prayer rooms in the basement.
5.30 p.m: The Priestesses have a daily meeting in the basement meeting room to regroup and discuss any issues. Sometimes the instructors or other staff come in to voice their opinions, too.
6.30 p.m: Dinner with the other staff, sometimes taken in the meeting room, but usually in the canteen. Sometimes she takes dinner after curfew, in her bedroom.
7 p.m: Lorika sees any acolytes or outsiders who have booked her for therapy sessions between now and 9 p.m.
9 p.m: This is curfew time for the non-staff members. Lorika performs another check of the Temple to ensure everything is in order. (Curfew is relaxed on Friday and Saturday nights for those aged over 18. Otherwise, Acolytes are not allowed to roam around after dark, including adults, because the Order is responsible for their safety during their stay at the Temple.)
9.30 p.m-2 a.m: Lorika returns to her room, does paperwork, keeps records, writes any new material, meditates, then goes to sleep. Sometimes she makes a midnight trip to the garden to enjoy the serenity of the night.
Note: Since the power of the Overseer returned, Lorika needs much less sleep than she used to, allowing her to work through the night with no ill effects. Lorika will also usually abandon the un-pressing parts of her schedule to attend to any problems that arise, turning up whenever and wherever she's needed.
Spellcasting Mistress: Cressa
Age: Appears ~25; Actual 115
Height: 6 foot 1 inches (roughly 6'5" in heels)
Race: Gaia Non-native Dark Elf
Cressa's had a long and colourful life, and every day with her around is bound to be interesting, too... sometimes for very good reasons; sometimes for cataclysmic ones. You never really know which way it's going to swing with her - she's unpredictable as a rocket-powered pogo-stick.
She was apparently in line for the matriarchy of her home family at one point - why she chose to abstain from this honour is not known, but it may be connected to her inherent magical abilities, as sorceresses - or women who develop magic naturally - are ostracised and feared in her homeland. Some time after this, she became a renowned hero, and will glady tell tales of her epic adventures to anyone interested enough to ask. After her brave and noble deeds at the Order, nobody doubts the veracity of her stories. They really did happen.
She and Jessie apparently met as enemies, and only became friends after quite some time and persistence on the part of Cressa. He's been stuck with her ever since! The details around how they arrived on Gaia are also fuzzy, but apparently involved some kind of gigantic magical storm and a teleportation gone wrong...
Now as one of the Spellcasting professors at the Order, Cressa spends her time corrupting - er, I mean, instructing the burgeoning young wizards as only she can. Her main grievance in life at the moment is the fact that her office is far too small.
Personality:
Cressa is a dynamic and unpredictable free spirit who does what she wants when she wants to do it and gives not a flying flippety eff for the consequences, even when they come toppling down on her head. Her influence is often highly destructive, as she acts on the moment and isn't afraid to blast a few hundred people with fireballs to get what she wants. She doesn't really care for the concepts of "good" or "evil" and tends to bulldoze right over the laws of the land, but is loyal to herself and the few things that mean something to her.
Though she often demonstrates a ferocious temper, Cressa is extremely variable and liable to act in surprising ways. Her instances of kindness are as frequent as her outbursts, though much more subtle. She's an expert at lying and concealing her true nature. Does anybody know who she really is? Probably not. Nonetheless, this intelligent, knowledgeable and talented lady is an asset to the Order, at all times when she isn't proving to be a curse.
~~~~~~~~~

Powers:

Spellcasting: Master
Swordfighting: Advanced
Musician: Expert

Cressa's innovative manipulation of energy makes her as much of a livewire on the battlefield as anywhere else. She always seems to have something up her sleeve for those moments when everyone is backed into a corner - this is partly thanks to her wide-ranging knowledge of magic, as when things are looking bad she can abandon energy manipulation and revert to reciting spells to ensure predictable outcomes. The wide range of her powers is seemingly limitless, as she can do everything from elemental magic to arcane healing and shapeshifting. One thing she isn't very good at is teleportation. She can do it, but... she isn't very good at it, because her concentration has a tendency to break.

Etherwork

A sorceress is a magician with powers available to them since birth. They have a natural understanding of magic and work their witchery by "feeling" the energies around them and playing them like a virtuoso would a harp. This can produce an almost limitless array of wonders, from simple elemental magic to teleportation to shapeshifting, and everything inbetween.

Gambler

Cressa's unpredictable nature makes her stronger in the turning tides of battle. Being a risk-taker allows her to reap large rewards for large gambits. If Cressa is backed into a corner or otherwise weakened, her attacks increase +3 in potency.

Lore Master

Cressa's travelled a long way in her many decades of life. She's been to a lot of places, met a lot of people, read a lot of books and cracked a lot of ciphers. This talent covers her wide-ranging font of languages and lore and her skill at cracking puzzles and codes. Anybody need a kuo-toan translator?

Auspex

As a master of energy manipulation, Cressa can see the energies around her, including the auras of people and objects. This has a variety of uses - for example, Cressa can track people and follow energy signatures, or tell who has touched an object last. She can also sense demons, spirits and otherworldly creatures lurking just out of sight, and see through shrouds of invisibility. She puts this skill to use the most, however, as a means of bluffing her way around people, as she can read a person's energy and use it against them. She likes to declare dramatically that she can "see your soul." This ability, combined with intelligent guessing, leaves people with the unsettling feeling that Cressa really does know more about them than they do themselves...

Cressa: Two sets of everyday clothes and a going out outfit.

Duties: Duties...? OH, oh. Right. Cressa teaches classes during the day, for one to two hours at a time. Sometimes she and Deylin combine powers to give a lecture or discussion class to all the students at once. Sometimes Cressa doesn't show up for these particular sessions. When she does, they occassionally devolve into a magical duel, which to be fair is pretty interesting for the students to watch anyway.

Otherwise, Cressa's classes usually comprise two topic-based hour-long lessons, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and one two-hour student-focused session around midday. Topics for the hour-long sessions are chosen a week in advance and posted on the message boards; anyone who's interested may attend. The two-hour long sessions focus specifically on the students who chose her as their professor, their own work and advancement. She also does extra sessions in the evening for these students when necessary. Cressa has a wide range of knowledge, including but not limited to planar theory, arcane and ancient languages, elementalism, spellcraft and wishcraft, thaumaturgy (the art of miracles, or magic performed by acting as a catalyst for a greater power), illusions, telekinesis, divination, meta-magic... even black magic. She also has a lot of lore and stories to share. As such, her lessons always have something exciting... in fact, her students are usually praying for them to be less exciting, rather than more. burning_eyes

Her daily schedule is highly variable, but with the structure of lessons typically looks something like this:

5 or 6 or 7 or honestly whenever the ******** she feels like it a.m: Rise and shine! Get dressed and follow Jessie around until it's time for...

8.30 a.m: Breakfast!

9.30 a.m: First classes of the day, BORING.

10.30 a.m: Spin around on office chair.

10.45 a.m: Sense Deylin coming; attempt to ward the door. Keep it up until he gives up or breaks in - former: continue spinning; latter: have a magical duel.

11 a.m: Fix damage from duel, or leave it to someone else. Go and bother Jessie.

12 p.m: More classes. Set fire to some kid's hair just to liven things up. They were being a little s**t anyway.

2 p.m: LUNCHY!

2.30 p.m: Hang around in the library for a while, read a couple of books. Go back and spin on office chair again if bored. Maybe go play the piano.

3 p.m: Last classes of the day! Unless somebody wants some private lessons in the evening, of course.

4 p.m: BOOYAKA! School's out and it's time to go DO STUFF! Often disappears at this time of day - nobody's quite sure where she goes. Nobody wants to ask. Usually following Jessie around again if not vanished, which means she sometimes follows him to the meetings too.

6/7 p.m: Sometimes takes extra lessons around this time. Might not show up, but is usually pretty reliable.

6/7/8 p.m: Time for a well-deserved BUBBLY BATH! Ahhhhhhhh... heart

9 p.m: Often disappears around this time too, sometimes drags Jessie out to town for dinner or clubbing - goes by herself or with Gloria otherwise.

12 a.m: Gets back to the Temple. MISCHIEF TIME. Some favourite middle-of-the-night hobbies for her include rearranging the books in the library, painting magical moustaches on Deylin while he sleeps or turning invisible and a) pretending to be a ghost, or b) following Jessie around. LOL he thinks he's so clever wandering around at night to get out of sharing a room with her. NOT CLEVER ENOUGH biggrin

1 a.m: Sometimes she goes and sits in her office and reads at this time of night. Sometimes she's too busy pretending to be a ghost.

3 a.m: Yawn. Time for a little reverie. And then the mischief can begin anew...

Note: Cressa and Jessie do not technically need to sleep. Instead, they experience a couple of hours of deep meditation, known as "reverie." Well, it's kind of like a meditation, but kind of like a very short, very deep sleep. It keeps their batteries charged and their concentration honed, but it can be dangerous to wake an elf from reverie, so they must be undisturbed.

Captain of the Combat Division: Jessie

Age: Appears ~25; Actual 71

Height: 5 foot 10 inches

Race: Gaia Non-native Dark Elf

Not much is known of the Captain's life prior to the Order, and he, unlike Cressa, is not very open when questioned, as he, unlike Cressa, is not prone to making up fanciful lies to bluff over what was assuredly a very difficult past. However, he will divulge more openly with those close to him. He was the eldest son of a large family of nine siblings. Two distinct groups existed among the siblings, based on the influence of his two elder sisters, Aunmysklyr and Aunrae. In simple terms, those who took after Aunmysklyr were banded together against those who took after Aunrae. In even simpler terms, it was a dynamic of good versus evil... which I'm sure you'll agree is very strange to see within a family. His mother remained largely aloof, taking on the role of a detached, judicial figure who would appear from time to time to impose her will. Out of all his siblings, Jessie was closest to Aunmysklyr, whom he idolised as an in loco parentis mother figure and a best friend.

He was a soldier throughout his teenage years, but at some point when he was still quite young, he ran away from home, apparently losing his left eye in the process. He also has a scar on his neck from where a rival tried to slit his throat while he meditated, and having narrowly escaped several mass-poisonings, he remains highly suspicious of unfamiliar food to this day. Once out of this cut-throat world, he became an adventurer by necessity, met Cressa on a far-flung continent, and the rest is history.

During the First Sentinel War, he was hired by the Gaian government to lead and train the armies of B.O.O in exchange for a wiped criminal record. The offer was too good to pass up, especially seeing as he'd obtained his criminal record mostly accidentally in the first place. (Trouble just seems to follow him around, you know. *pointed glare at Cressa*) He'd planned to leave pretty quickly, especially considering the way he was treated when he first arrived, but somehow, two years down the line, he's still here.

Personality:

It's true that Jessie can be aloof and cold. His position, wealth and experience afford him a position of respect and comfort that allows him to keep others at arm's length and remain in the seclusion he has grown accustomed to. However, if a person takes the time to actually talk to him, rather than judging by his appearance, it quickly becomes apparent that Jessie is something of a sheep in wolf's clothing. Or, to phrase it more aptly, a golden heart within a cold, steel exterior.

Jessie is complicated and emotional: humble, yet proud; strong, yet soft; passive and deferential, yet often unwilling to compromise on his strict set of beliefs. He is intensely loyal, which, combined with his passive characteristics, often leads to his good nature being taken advantage of. He is patient and forgiving, mentally sturdy and responsible. Despite all of his strength of character though, he can display to those closest to him shocking vulnerability. Many people with something missing in their lives are drawn towards Jessie's inherently good nature and unfailing kindness. His sensitivity to their needs and unfaltering dependability offers them a strong support from which to rebuild their lives.

~~~~~~~~~
Powers:
Combat: Master
Jessie is masterfully versed in a very large spectrum of weaponry and martial arts, but his specialty is swords, daggers and other bladed weapons. His personal style is based on agility and a combination of different martial arts and, in the typical merciless style of dark elves, when he strikes, he aims to kill. For this reason, it's not advisable for regular members of the Order to challenge him to a real fight, unless they want to leave in pieces. His own style might be more suited to out-pacing rather than overpowering the enemy, but he knows a wide variety of techniques for all kinds of styles and builds, so he can tailor his instruction to the student.
Menace
Due to a combination of personal skill and an intimidating aura, all direct attacks against Jessie take a perpetual -2 penalty unless a character has a skill which negates the effects of intimidation, such as Fearless or Blind Stupidity. The penalty also does not count if Jessie is hit by an AoE, a trap, or an attack that wasn't meant for him.
Cold Blooded
This character has killed so many times, the act has lost its meaning. Perpetual +1 roll bonus against all humanoid characters (humans, angels, demons in human form, nymphs, elves etc), but not demi-humanoids (merfolk, felids, centaurs, lizardmen etc).
Heightened Reflexes
This character has the ability to make an automatically successful Dodge of an attack at any time, in any place, barring logical restrictions such as places where the character is immobilised.
Graceful Killer
Jessie can execute a counter attack or riposte immediately after dodging without having to wait for a new turn, making him one of the most efficient warriors around. This ability only works at melee range.
Note: This means, for example, whereas a character would normally be unable to dodge an attack unless the attack against them failed its own roll outright, Jessie can automatically dodge any attack without rolling, and immediately roll for an attack on the same turn. Scary gonk
Jessie: Two typical everyday outfits.
Duties: Jessie's duties during times of peace mainly revolve around keeping the combat division up to scratch. During times of war, he also advises on the formulation of battle plans, but generally remains a hands-on leader rather than a remote General in a war room. As he and the other seasoned warriors know well, a battle plan can fall apart in seconds, at which point he comes into his own, commanding the warriors on the spot towards victory.
During his free time, which is time not spent training himself or his students, he enjoys spending time alone, reading or going for walks. Jessie did not actually learn to read or write in the Common tongue until Cressa taught him many years after he learned to speak it. Before the destruction of his private home during the Second Sentinel War, he had a large collection of poetry and prose written in his native language, which he himself transcribed from memory over the years. He and Cressa have been working to build it back up again ever since. He also enjoys spending time in the music room, and can sing very well, but dislikes playing instruments himself.
His schedule usually looks something like this:
4 a.m: Jessie has already been up all night by this point. Cressa is usually in reverie at this time, so he deems it safe to wash and shower without risk of her unwanted interference or spying.
5.30 a.m: Combat students assemble outside the Temple for their morning drills.
7.30 a.m: Return to the Temple for morning prayers and breakfast.
9/9.30 a.m-12 p.m: Main combat lessons of the day.
12 p.m: With Cressa out of the way for two to three hours, this is the safest time of day for Jessie to go into reverie. He doesn't bother changing the place where he rests, because she'd find him if she wanted to anyway, so he just sleeps in their shared room.
2.30/3p.m: Late lunch.
3.30 p.m: Another, shorter session of training for those dedicated enough to return for it. Some days a week this session is used to play sports and games, much to Jessie's continuing distaste. Gloria usually oversees these frivolous sessions. He might prefer to go read a book or otherwise distract himself, but a sense of duty keeps him there, supervising.
5 p.m: Sometimes goes to the library or the music room before heading to the meeting at 5.30, but otherwise takes a leisurely walk up the beach, usually accompanied by Cressa.
6.30 p.m: Dinner with Lorika and the other staff, unless already promised to eat with Cressa later, in which case the next item commences early:
7 p.m: Gloria and a couple of other students, including ex-student Ardelle, take a voluntary extra hour of training most nights of the week.
8.30 p.m: Might head into town with Cressa to eat at a pub or restaurant. Sometimes heads to clubs with her afterwards, but rarely enjoys clubbing because he, unlike Cressa, does not enjoy the amorous attention lavished upon them. If he refuses to go out with her he either uses this time to sneak a reverie if he did not during the day, reads in the library or in his room or takes a second shower or a bath.
11 p.m: If he's not interested in reading any longer, he's in the habit of restlessly stalking around the halls of the Temple like a guard dog. He patrols around periodically throughout the night.
12 a.m: Might spend some time with Cressa when she comes back from town, but he often doesn't see her at this time, oddly enough.
1 a.m: Spends the next few hours practising and exercising privately, or sometimes with Cressa if she's available. Then the cycle begins again...
NPC STAFF LIST
I decided to include these guys here rather than giving them their own thread because I have a lot of room here and it's nice and convenient to have all the staff (except Deylin and the kitchen staff and, well, basically anyone created by anyone other than me) in one place I guess! So here we have the other two priestesses, Lacine and Ardelle, the Head of Enchanting, Adeline, the Head of Alchemy, Thomas, and Gloria, former stand-in combat mistress and Jessie's assistant.
Lacine
(la - seen)
Age: 25
Height: 5 foot 9 inches
Race: Gaia-native Human
Lacine grew up in Barton as part of a normal, healthy family with two parents and no siblings. Yes, like Lorika, she is an only child - and was, quite often, a lonely child. As she was growing up, she was teased mercilessly for being a tomboy, and for a time attempted to be overly girly to make up for it. This failed, so for the rest of her teenage years she stuck to a grungy, baggy look that found her even more isolated.
By the time she entered the "real" world, she found herself increasingly attracted to the flamboyant, and dreamed of the day when she could have the courage to wear styles as outrageous as her favourite fashion icons. As a shy, reserved teen, she did well in her studies and was drawn to art and sculpture. Her parents enrolled her at a special art college, but rather than blooming Lacine grew even more stifled amongst the huge campus. She gained a joint foundation degree in fine art and fashion design and dropped out at 19.
She quickly found a job working as a newspaper photographer in Durem, but eventually grew to loathe it. The job was stressful and dull, and her work wasn't respected by the other journalists. She was underappreciated by the other journalists, and often found herself running meaningless errands when not out battling crowds and paparazzi for shots. After a year and a half, she managed to quit, and found her way from Durem to a photographer's studio in Aekea. Doing family portraits and wedding photos was still far from the high fashion world she desired, but it was definitely a step up, and a step in the right direction furthermore.
Before becoming a member of the Order she was strongly interested in wicca, Buddhism and Jainism, but was always too afraid of ridicule to make a stand for her beliefs and become even 'weirder' than she already was. She stood by the Order, seeing it as the path to a new existence where she could be the kind of person she really wanted to be, and her confidence has bloomed ever since becoming a priestess.
Personality:
Lacine is artistic, heartfelt, genuine and a dreamer aching to express herself. She tends to be quiet, but can handle the spotlight well as inside she is a confident, flashy person just aching to burst out. Like many of the other Ordonians, she is also good and idealistic. She is a vegetarian and a pacifist.
Duties:
In times of crisis Lacine is Lorika's right hand woman. She's a dependable person and Lorika's close friend and confidante. For a time she was the supervising priestess of the dorms, but the kids walked all over her, so she switched duties with Ardelle to become the supervising healer for the combat division. Though she and Lorika don't see as much of each other nowadays as they used to, she's a friend to both Jessie and Gloria, so she never has to feel lonely while at work.
Powers:
Non-offensive Spiritualism: Advanced
Druidism: Adept
Alchemical Healing: Adept
Elven Arcanum: Beginner
Artist: Expert
Lacine specialises in non-offensive spiritualism, like Lorika used to, except she hasn't moved with the times due to her strong pacifistic beliefs. Instead, she has branched out during her time at the Order to become a specialist in healing magic over a variety of disciplines. She takes lessons from Adeline, Thomas and Cressa, whenever they have time to put aside to teach her, and she's always looking for new methods to learn.
Ardelle
Age: 21
Height: 5 foot 6 inches
Race: Gaia Non-native Human
Ardelle was born on a foreign world, in the realm of Aravice, during a time of war. Many people were living in poverty and she, for some unknown reason, was orphaned and found by a maid working for the house of a famed General. The maid engineered it so that the General, a bachelor with no children, would find the unnamed baby and take her in - and it worked! Ardelle's life truly began at that moment. She grew up attending the best academies in the land, and though her father was gruff, he loved his adopted daughter, and she always did her best to make him proud, excelling in classes and private lessons. She became engaged to one of her father's most promising young Captains, a Tiefling by the name of Zevulim Mgelias, at 18.
However, war began to brew once more between Aravice and their neighbour, Grolandia. Many feared that another war would devastate the country, so Ardelle travelled with her father and some other dignitaries to try and make peace. However, the meeting was a trap! They were ambushed by soldiers and a court wizard, who began casting a vicious spell...
...And all of a sudden, their entire entourage and all of the Grolandia soldiers were transported to Gaia.
They'd fallen from one war into another. Ardelle's father was quickly able to secure a place as a military advisor in their strange new world, beset by the forces of chaos. It was equally easy for Ardelle and the other soldiers to join up with the army forces sent to support the Order in the defense of Gaia from invasion. They needed all the help they could get, and the addition of seasoned warriors from a world much harder and tougher to exist in than Gaia was a godsend. She, however, decided to stay with the Order after the war ended, at the time because there was more she wanted to learn from Jessie that she couldn't learn anywhere else. However, after experiencing so much war and devastation during her short life, she decided to take the opportunity of being with the Order to learn how to heal and protect life, as well as take it away. She hopes that with her newfound powers she can help the poor and the weak as well as her fellow soldiers when she eventually (hopefully) returns to Aravice.
Personality:
Ardelle is a mature and stoic young woman, used to strict discipline. It seems against her nature for her to let her hair down. She tends to get on better with men, or tomboys like Lacine, Gloria and Odin. She can be seen to smile over a breakfast chat with any of her friends. She's a diligent worker, but her calm exterior belies a fierce, heroic nature (she was a redhead before dyeing her hair pink), and she can lose her temper and slip into passionate tirade if her charges rub her up the wrong way. She's a highly driven lady who's always looking to improve herself and refine her skills, for the benefit of her homeland and the people she cares about. She'd be an excellent paladin, such is the strength of her kindness and beliefs.
Duties:
Ardelle started off as the supervising healer to the combat division, but agreed to swap duties with Lacine, as the acolytes in the dormitories were giving her a hard time. They do not dare give Ardelle a hard time. Whether this is because she commands respect or because they know she could destroy them if she deemed it necessary, either is an excellent deterrent for misbehaviour.
Her duties mainly come into play at night, when rogue youths attempt to break curfew or sneak into each other's beds. She makes several routine checks after nine o'clock (and sometimes several un-routine ones, to keep the little blighters unwary) before meditating and going to sleep herself. During the day she wakes up early to attend the morning combat drills, then works with Lorika and on her own to advance her spiritualism skills, before returning in the evening to train with the advanced combat students.
Powers:
Combat: Expert
Spiritualism: Advanced
Ardelle is an expert in swordsmanship and archery, but she was taught growing up how to use strength and endurance to overpower the enemy, rather than agility and stealth. Speed, acrobatics and hand-to-hand skills are the arts she's been learning from her elven teacher, as well as refining her expertise in a variety of other bladed weapons. She's trying to get to grips with the full spectrum of Spiritualist fields, including healing, shielding and offensive arts. So far she shows a natural aptitude for shielding and offensive skills, and has been learning how to combine her magic and combat for effective use during a large-scale war.
EDIT: Zevulim. Isn't he handsome?
Adeline
Age: Appears ~25; Actual 59
Height: 5 foot 8 inches
Race: Gaia-native Elf
Adeline is an elf of the Stayflowers, which is a small tribe settled in the West of the Deep Woods. Enchanted garments are known throughout Gaia as a specialty of the Stayflower elves, and as soon as she was old enough to know her own mind, which happens fairly young for elves, she chose to join the noble tradition of magician-tailors which was steeped in her family.
Well, I say her family, I actually mean her mother's side of the family. Her father was a foreign druid from the wild Winterdusk tribe, who settled with the Stayflowers in order to expand his own knowledge of the various plant-life of the region. And when I say settled, I mean stuck around for a couple of years before going off travelling again for research. He returned from time to time, usually for several months at a time. This wasn't as much of a problem as it might have been for a human family, as elves are long-lived and therefore their perception of time is different, and they also tend to be more patient and understanding.
Adeline's life changed in her early twenties, when word reached them of her father's untimely death. Having always been fascinated by his own wild brand of magic, but never having had the chance to learn, she decided to go and seek to carry on his work, and hopefully also find out some more about him and his life along the way. She made her way northwards to the mountainous Winterdusk tribe - her father's birthplace. The Winterdusk elves are known for being as cold and isolated as their landscape, and even being a daughter of theirs it took some time for them to begin to trust her. Once they did, she was welcomed into their fold, and learned the ancient arts of the elvish druids.
Her need to discover more about her father led her to follow the same course he had taken in his life. She went travelling for a time, and eventually came to rest in a research outpost in the Badlands. She spent years here doing reclamation work with the rag-tag group of scholars and vagabonds who lived there, and this is the point where we see what a tough and courageous spirit Adeline really has in her. There, she faced solo treks across the treacherous desert, exploring to uncover ancient artefacts and ruins and living the life of a typical hardened adventurer. She endured the harsh weather, near starvation, vicious attacks from desert monsters and endless, endless travel across the expanse. She was forced to deny her pacifist urges and became a highly proficient warrior in order to survive, picking up melee combat and swordplay in addition to her previous archery skills. During the War, she was not a healer or an enchanter but a front-line member of the combat division. Since then, however, she has returned to her roots, and spends her days in the Temple gardening, performing enchanting work and weaving.
Personality:
With her long, golden blonde hair, slender build and blue eyes, she doesn't break any stereotypes. Quiet, graceful, genteel and easygoing, Adeline can potentially blend into the background amongst the more dynamic humans and upon first impressions seems too sweet-natured to be of much use. However, as well as being tough as old boots beneath her fragile surface, she is surprisingly playful, witty and flirtatious when you get to talking to her. She's dreamily romantic and falls easily for men, but her ultimate aim is to settle down with her One True Love. She is still a virgin, and men, such as Jonathan, are attracted to her sweet and feminine nature. His tragic death hit her hard, but her maturity and sense of peace with the natural laws of the world brought her comfort and closure. In a way, as he was a mortal human and she an immortal elf, she had already accepted the eventuality of his death, and this has helped her to move on.
Duties:
Adeline supervises and sustains all of the enchantments in the Temple, which sounds difficult, but is actually just a matter of ensuring the power crystals in the enchanting center are sufficiently charged and untampered with. These enchantments strengthen the walls of the Temple to prevent any future damage and keep all furniture, utensils and appliances in the Temple perfectly clean, as well as other important enhancements. In the mornings and evenings she activates and supervises the teleportation equipment, which allows members of the Order to commute back and forth between the Temple and home. She also enchants bottles for the Alchemy center and medical equipment for the Medical center, to ensure that glass and metal is unbreakable and sterile.
All of this, while important, takes up a tiny, tiny fraction of her day. During her boundless amounts of free time she designs and tailors magical garments and coaxes the garden to bear flower and fruit all year round. She enjoys meditating with the spiritualists and always finds time to stop and chat with Lorika in the afternoons. She's also happy to teach anyone who wants to learn from her, and though she has no timetabled lessons she holds a lot of impromptu one-on-one sessions. Her students include Lacine, who learns the druidic arts through Adeline.
Powers:
Tailoring: Master
Enchanting: Master
Druidism: Advanced
Archery: Advanced
Swordfighting: Adept
Enchanting generally refers to the art of magicking things to improve them, or make them behave in unnatural ways. For example, armour can be enchanted to make it unbreakable or at least extra-durable, or scratch-resistant, or all three. Generally the more layers of enchantments that get added, the more complex it is and the more power it takes to sustain. A self-sustaining garment or item can take weeks of careful magic to get right. Therefore, enchanted garments can often end up quite expensive. Druidism is the magic of nature. Druids generally "ask" the natural energies of the world around them to perform feats - a "powerful" druid is one connected enough to nature to produce continuous (and potentially miraculous) results. Druids can also learn to transform into a spirit or animal form, if they wish. Elves are known for being particularly good with ranged combat, due to their dexterity, speed and excellent eyesight, and Adeline had to learn swordplay to survive her many years in the desert.
Thomas
Age: 18
Height: 5 foot 8 inches
Race: Gaia-native Human
Thomas was born in Durem. Once upon a time, he used to be a sensitive and shy boy who spent a lot of time on his own. His parents unfortunately fell foul of the Durem underground - as in the literal, dark-elven underground - when he was still a child. Tragically orphaned before the age of ten, he went to live with his uncle, a wizard.
Thomas never really came to terms with his grief, nor did he put any effort into doing so. His uncle was concerned for him, and offered to teach him the magical arts to help him move forward. Thomas took to it like a duck to water, throwing himself into his studies to the exclusion of all other hobbies and interests. In time, he also studied philosophy and ethics, but due to his own intense anger and feelings of being wronged by the world, his own personal philosophy is pessimistic and skewed. In particular he holds what he sees as a thoroughly justified hatred of dark elves and other "evil" races.
When the First Sentinel War broke out, he and his uncle went to assist in the construction of the trident, and after it was finished, his uncle instructed him to stay behind, telling him to "see if he could learn anything" from the Order. He periodically writes to his uncle to tell him what he's been learning about, but his uncle remains unsatisfied and continues to tell him to stay and learn. Thomas doesn't realise that his uncle wants him to learn more valuable life lessons than simple academic knowledge...
Now that he's turned 18, Thomas has considered moving on and joining a real wizarding academy, but his uncle's insistence can't help but make him wonder exactly what he's still missing after so long. And so, he stays, and waits, and wonders.
Personality:
Taciturn and unfriendly, Thomas doesn't invite conversation or seek it out. He prefers to spend time by himself pursuing his interests, learning all that he can about wizardry and alchemy. His ambition in life is to be a great and noble wizard, like his uncle, but he's managed to build up a wall of solitude so deep he's even lost sight of himself at the core. He considers himself to be the most mature person at the Temple, but in reality his personal growth is stunted by his own unwillingness to let go of the past. He's been in an even worse mood than usual lately, because he became close friends with Stephanie, and now she's left to pursue a magical career herself. Lacine swears she can hear him crying in his room sometimes at night.
He likes to wear cloaks because they make him feel like a "real" wizard, and they make him look older than he actually is.
Duties:
Thomas was appointed Head of Alchemy, a position which secretly pleased him, as it meant he could spend all day cooped up brewing potions and researching without anyone to bother him. He dislikes being interrupted in order to actually hand the potions out, though, so whenever people interact with him through the hatch he's generally utterly foul and irritable.
Aside from keeping the potion stocks up and supplying them he has no other duties, but while other people might use the free time to pursue other hobbies, his only real interest in life is his magic, so the point of "free time" is moot. However, the Order paid for a personal laptop for him to work on, which has given him a window onto the world in the form of the internet. He still writes letters to his uncle, but he and Steff IM each other most nights of the week. Don't dare suggest he uses his laptop for anything other than work, though. He'll respond with the utmost indignance.
Powers:
Spellcasting: Expert
Alchemy: Expert
Thomas is knowledgeable concerning a wide variety of magical arts, but himself prefers to practise elementalism and non-psionic telekinesis. He has actually proven himself to be a formidable battle-caster, as his mastery of spellcraft is unsurpassed, giving his spells a perfect ratio of energy to output. In times of war he also constructed the barriers around the Temple, to free the other mages from that particular power-sapping duty. He isn't fond of "flashy" spells, as the energy used making them impressive could be better put towards making them more powerful. He's a master of stringing numerous small spells together to create single or multiple powerful effects, which means for fast and devastating damage on the field.
His areas of research include arcane healing, potion-crafting with non-dependency on catalysts, and sustainable pyromancy.
Gloria
Age: 21
Height: 5 foot 7 inches
Race: Gaia-native Human
An orphan from birth, Gloria grew up in care as the one who got left behind. Having no supports in her life, she acted out a lot as a child, and was mistakenly diagnosed with ADHD due to her poor behaviour. At 7, she was transferred to a new home, which had a young, idealistic male carer. He felt sorry for the unruly, lonely little girl, and paid her special attention and care. He was the one who taught her aikido when the other children began to pick fights with her, and also had an otherwise immense influence on shaping the good person that exists at Gloria's core.
She, of course, developed extremely profound feelings for him, which eventually got her kicked out of that home at 14. For the next two years she was shuffled around homes - a real "problem child" whom no one wanted to deal with for long, except by this time a problematic teen, which, as we all know, proves far more of a problem than a problem child. She finally ran away at 16 and got a job serving as an au pair to a wealthy family.
She was eventually sacked from her first real job when the father of the family started spending a little too much time with the young au pair. Not that she let him do anything - oh no, Gloria has standards. At least, she'd learned to have standards, after losing her innocence young to a handful of rebellious boys in the home.
Athletic Gloria had always kept up her self defense and started working out religiously at around 15. Sports was the one thing where she achieved recognition at school, and she was a devoted player of field hockey, tennis, women's rugby and basketball at school. None of the boys there had any interest in her, as she was basically "one of them." When she wasn't at her latest home, she was out in their gangs. She also tried her hand at gymnastics when in primary school, but didn't stick to it. Finally, after she'd left school and gotten her job as the au pair, she started taking kickboxing classes with her new money, and fell in love with the aggressive contact sport.
After being fired, she stayed at a women's refuge until she turned 18 later that year, after which point it didn't take her long to find a new job more related to her interests - as a bouncer at a small, slightly seedy club in Durem. She never touched drugs or cigarettes, caring too much about the state of her body, but didn't mind a little alcohol from time to time. She stopped drinking, however, when she happened to read about exactly what damage it can do to you in large quantities. Incredibly forceful with her beliefs, she doesn't care if it makes her the outcast or odd one out. She doesn't give a damn about what other people think - especially not YOU!
She joined the Order at the very beginning of the war, and was heavily involved as a soldier from that point on. When Jessie left for several weeks to pursue the Overseer, she took over after his first replacement proved a little too, erm, unconventional for teaching. Since then she has fought again in the Second Sentinel War, and now acts as Jessie's assistant.
Personality:
Gloria has a forceful, fiery, intense and idealistic personality. Gloria is hard as nails. She's tough - scary biker rebel chick tough - and the queen bee of the combat division. She has a quick temper and can be rude and insulting at little provocation, having grown up looking out for herself when no one else would, but at heart, she isn't a bad person. Would she be a member of the Order if she were? In addition, her time at the Order has mellowed her from what she was. She's also a natural teacher, and her calm, patient demeanour when in her position of responsibility makes her downright unrecognisable. Nowadays, her sense of humour has blossomed and she enjoys herself unguardedly, without needing to resort to spitefulness. She's much more secure and stable than she was, and she claims to owe a lot of her personal development to Jessie, whom she reveres as a personal role model.
Gloria is interested in body modification, even though she'd never do any of it to herself. She doesn't have any permanent tattoos (she doesn't consider them good for her body), but she delights in impermanent transfers. Her favourite adornments are arrays of black stars, which she tends to place around her eyes and on the alternate side of her stomach.
Duties:
Gloria can be found devotedly shadowing the combat master during the times of day the division meet. They usually split up in order to cover all the students more effectively. When he goes off to sleep during the day she usually takes over by herself until it's time for lunch, and during the "sports" sessions she also takes charge. All in all this leaves her with a pretty packed daily schedule with few breaks, but she enjoys it, and somehow finds time for yoga and meditation as well. She often still goes out at night, sometimes accompany Cressa on her interesting excursions, as the two women found after initial suspicion that they have an awful lot in common. She also enjoys going shopping on the weekends with Ardelle, an activity she used to enjoy with Zuri the demi-succubus, before the events of the Second Sentinel War left her trapped beyond the mortal realms in a demonic dimension; the realm of her ancestors. A little-known fact: She likes to wear dresses. On special occassions!
Powers:
Combat: Advanced
Hand-to-Hand Combat: Expert
Close-range Combat: Expert
Gloria is basically a normal human with no special powers or abilities aside from her own skill and tenacity. She's always been a talented athlete, but she takes her skills to ambitious, tireless new heights. In general, her broad skill around a variety of disciplines, including swordplay and archery, is not quite as advanced as her abilities in hand-to-hand combat, which for her includes fighting with stabby short swords and daggers. She also has an unusual aptitude for garrotting and the use of whips.
She prides herself on following the elven (specifically dark elven, considering her teacher) means of combat, relying on speed and dexterity to deal swift, merciless killing blows. She likes to listen to stories about Jessie's own personal training during his early years - stories which he doesn't divulge to just anyone, brutal as they are - and takes on board the advice his own masters gave to him.
