The peculiar afternoon drew on. Woodland creatures seemed restless, but the muted light of the cloud-covered sun did nothing to explain their behavior. They seemed to be avoiding a particular area, though the cause was uncertain.
A dainty mare lingered near a thin stream, supple tresses fluttering lightly in the cool breeze. The sounds of water filled the air, the overhead canopy rustling as the wind teased the leaves.

The mare was lost in thought, as she always seemed to be. Her mind wandered while her body was left to fend for itself... it was more of a meandering loop in and out of philosophical pondering and absent day-dreaming, interspersed with moments of clarity and heightened awareness; she did come back to check on herself from time to time.
The change- fully present, then gone to some dream-scape of her own devising- was marked by a subtle shift in her movements: suddenly what had been languid, halting steps became sinuous grace. Half-lidded eyes opened, wide and alert.

A serene smile flickered over her exquisite features. Her eerie crimson gaze passed over the surrounding brush, a sweet and gentle light shining from her kind soul despite the initially unnerving hue.

Her left ear flickered as the sound came again.

Rustle... rustle

User Image Shalar couldn't seem to find Petal anywhere... the silly little mouse had wandered off on her on, and although Shalar often fainted disinterest where the mouse was concerned, the truth was he did actually care. And Spirits help whoever dared to touch a hair on her head.

While Shalar was usually silent Petal was the opposite. She was loud, chatty, giggly, smiley.... everything that ruffled his fur the wrong way. They had stayed together so long due to his sence of duty and the fact that his father, Nisroc, would go balistic if he ever learnt that Shalar had abandoned her... as if he would. He rolled his eyes as he tried to figure out where the hell she would have wandered to this time...

Instead of figuring it out, it simply left a frown peeled upon his features.

Petal had wandered off, a foolish thing sure enough but she had wanted to go in search of some roses for Shalar. He seemed grumpy lately and she didn't know how to cheer him up. After all, her constant talking did nothing but annoy him, and while she admitted to finding that fun she didn't want to annoy him right now.

The problem? She was so small, and the world was so big. She was currently body deep in a rose bush, doing her best to avoid the thorns and prickles as she tried to tug at the plant in an effort to break a rose or two three.... it was hard word, and made her appreciate the effort he went to collecting roses for himself and his sisters on a daily basis.

Petal was so focused on her task that she never saw the mare of blue , grey and black near by. So used to having Shalar to protect her that she had forgotten the world was sometimes filled with danger.

Pulling on the rose again she squeeked, "Come free already.... you're more stubborn than he is!"

The silent mare was no threat to any creature; the worst she could do was startle with her sudden appearance. She moved almost soundlessly, her grace lending to her gentle hoof-falls as she approached the source of the rustling.

She peered at tiny creature partially obscured by the rose bush, lowering her head to get a better view. Her ears perked forwards, an unusually alert expression- one of curiosity, a slight flicker of concern furrowing her brow before fading into her usual serenity.

Such a dainty creature, the color of a gentle blush kissed with touches of snow... tugging and pulling at something so strong. Reiha watched for a few breaths.

"Might I be of aid?" she queried, her voice soft and gentle- a sighing caress, hesitant and unsure and yet filled with warmth... perhaps the dainty creature wished to accomplish this task on her own. In her travels, Reiha had come to understand that many souls placed value on fending for themselves. However, roses were purely decorative, so foraging was not at work here... she understood that others had reasons for almost everything they did, but such things were often beyond her ken.

She waited patiently for a response, her mind dancing between illusions, lingering nearby in case she was required in the world of the dainty creature and the unknown stubborn one.

Shalar was smaller than most stallions, his mothers flutter blood was to thank for that although he had never been able to shrink in size as her kin were known for. His desperation at finding Petal grew, especially as he heard the cry of a wolf carry to his ears over the wind. If she was hurt.... or worst killed, there would be hell to pay! He stalked forward... still nothing.

Left with no other option Shalar spread his wings wide, he would go in search of Petal in the air, he would cover more ground and since he didn't know what direction she had roamed in, that would be to his advantage. His extremely large wings unfolded, revealing the most exquisite, a multitude of colours sparkled and flicked creating the image of eyes and detailed swirls of purple and lilac. It only took a moment for him to take to the skies, his ear wings flicking with aggrevation as his darkened eyes scanned the ground as hopelessness sunk in. His inner darkness stirred, never a good sign for his sanity....

Petal paused in her task and looked up as an unknown voice addressed her. She stared for a moment, blinked at the strange red eyes and golden headpiece that she could glimpse through the thorny bush. Still, Petal had never been one to shy away from others, Shalar had often called her too over confident, but she still didn't believe this creature would harm her... despite her strange appearance.

That was why a smile so bright spread across her lips and she nodded with enthusiasium. "Please." To Petal it was not a sign of weakness to accept or ask for help, in fact it was harder to ask than to try and do everything on your own. Her eyes hadn't left the mare yet, they traced the markings on her nose and cheek and captivated her. They almost reminded her of those upon Shalar's wings... and the Gods knew she had spent many hours simply staring at the beauty of them, it was a shame that Shalar usually hid them from the world. Perhaps it was for the best? At times she swore he was more beautiful than most mares.

Reiha found her own lips curve into an answering smile, feeling her spirits lift at the little one's enthusiasm. She had a task, something to do- someone to help. Crimson eyes seemed to brighten as she settled fully into the rhythms of this world, casting a gentle glow on the pearly-white squares that spiraled into nothingness upon her cheeks. Her markings were unusual, but not entirely unheard of- it was simply rare for spirals to be paired with straightened edges.

She peered at the rose bush, the tangled stems that posed such a challenge for the little creature's soft paws. She gazed upwards thoughtfully, then directed her gaze towards her little accomplice. "Please remain clear..." Pain was bad, and there would be much pain if one of the sharpened gold-dipped petals upon her ornamental crown caught the flesh.

She lowered herself further and angled her head, her thick braid brushing the ground as she brought a sharpened edge near the rose bush. It may have been easier to pluck them in her grass-grinding teeth, but this seemed more... logical... to the ethereal mare. Pushing through the first layer of thorns, she ran her head up and down along a stem, seeking the best place to chop off the rose. She glanced at the little mouse, as if seeking guidance.

What was the purpose of these flowers? They were beautiful- but why were they desired? How long must the stem be? These questions trickled through her mind, and she found her inner serenity perturbed by the mysteries of this task.

Her neck protested the awkward angle, but she ignored it. It felt good to be... useful.
