A twitch in his hind leg caused the colt to kick out, but the limb didn't get very far. THWACK. It hit a barrier, that friendly though scratchy barrier that he had nuzzled since he emerged from the womb, known as his very own basket. But it was high-time that he left this case behind as well, so he eagerly stretches his neck upwards and lifts open the lid of his soon-to-be-past dwelling. Blinking hard several times as his eyes adjusted to the brightness outside, Brutus took his first deep breathe of fresh air since birth. It was crisp and yet laced with mesmerizing blends of flowers. Yes, it was definitely time to get up and out into the world.
Flipping his head back so the lid flies off the basket, the bulky colt finally got to straighten his legs, and boy did it feel good. Stretching each leg out one at a time, he was wobbly at first, so taking the first few minutes of outside world to stabilize his balance, Brutus took a look around. He found himself in a mostly clear area peppered with all sorts of flowers. He thought to himself that this wasn't an all-too-bad place to be left to fend for themselves, as he hadn;t caught scent or sound of any sort of parents for several days, he wasn't expecting that anyone was coming back for them.
Having (for the most part) gained control of his limbs, he bravely strode around the clearing. Sure of having scanned the entire area, he came up with the conclusion of having two siblings, due to the two small baskets nearby. Striding towards the first one Brutus leans in and cautiously pokes at it, before gently prying the lid open a crack. Some of the flowers that grew around the basket had woven their way inside, and when his nose met soft fluff, it was also greeted by the sweet smell of fresia. Halting his own breath for a few moments, he waited to make sure that the other foal was breathing and well. Satisfied that his sister was alive and well, he drew back his muzzle to allow her to come out of her own accord whenever she was ready. He was in no rush, after all, not to mention he was bigger and stronger than the younger female that he had just nuzzled, so he wouldn't be surprised if it would be several more days before she emerged. That left the other, considerably smaller, basket to check.
Wandering over with a little more confidence the brown colt lowered his head to nuzzle this basket, just like the last. But something was wrong. A feeling of dread swept over Brutus even before he peeked inside. His nose was this time greeted by a smell of sorrow, and as he snuffled inside of the basket, he received no response, nor did he hear any breathing. Several minutes later he could no longer say he might just be missing it, this sibling was never going to come out of its basket. Sadly, he drew back from the second basket and had to come to a decision. It couldn't stay here, not if he still had to wait for his sister to come out, it just wasn't safe.
Checking on the first basket one last time, Brutus nuzzles it and whispers that he will be back soon. And thus, he begins to nudge the third basket along, not quite strong enough to lift it up yet. He plans on taking it away from this area, take it somewhere quiet and calm and bury it, to rejoin the earth that everything depends on to live. Little does the noble colt know of the looming danger ahead.
