So yeah, I noticed when I look at techie threads its alot of scenic and stage managers and stuff, but I don't see lighting designers or electricians that often. I'm a 'lighting design' major, but I prefer electrics. So anyways, anyone else around that is obsessed with lighting like I am?

I'm really interested in the design part, but ever time I work on the electrics I end up hurting myself anymore. o_o

I have major respect for lighting designers. I helped the lighting designer for my last show Can-Can hang the lights, and I almost electrocuted myself. Twice. I dunno how, and neither did he XD

I'm slowly working my way up to being the ME in our school theatre. I should be there by the time I'm a Junior.

The only accident I ever had while hanging lights was nearly dropping a Crescent Wrench onto our director about 3 years ago, but I've improved since then. Now I remeber to tie it onto my belt loop every time I go up to the catwalk.

xd Yeah, that happens.. One of our TDs almost dropped a ratchet on my head when we were hanging unistrut for rotating flats... Good thing I know how to dodge and she was able to hit it further back... But yeah, I have rope and a carabeaner on my wrench in case i drop it from the Genie or something, but in one of our theatres we use quick wrenches, so you just have to be careful.

I'm hoping to be an ME within the next 2 years

I've done just about everything in lighting, but right now I'm having fun learning about reparing lights and making turn arounds and stuff. I really enjoy the actual electrical stuff and not so much the design/board ops, but I'll do them all.

One Long Story

PostPosted: Fri Mar 10, 2006 10:52 am

I'm a do-it-all techie (currently my school's TD). But my beginnings and love are in lighting. I've done the lighting for about 25 shows...a couple have even been for professional touring acts that we booked! They said "we don't have any particular requests for light. have fun." and one told me later he's never had a better looking show in his 5 year tour!

Lights = love. I'm kinda new to this electritian thing though. I'm only a junior in high school and being one of two girl sin the class it's usually easier to get the guys in the class who like to assemble and disassmble computers for fun to do that kinda stuff...

I did, however, help unassmble and reassmble some lighting instruments which was a load of fun. But I do mostly stick to running and designing light =D

While I'm thinking about it, you said you're studying lighting? In college or something? I'm a junior and I'm planning a major in tech theatre, probably lighting. Would you happen to know any good colleges and such?M if you get a chance, would you? Mucho thanks =D
