Work, school, and midnight activities better off unnamed consumed the majority of Jett’s time. Staying up well into the early hours of the morning, catching a few short hours of sleep, then heading to school was weighing heavily on him enough as it were; had he not had work, he’d have loved to go home and sleep until dinner.

Work, however, was unavoidable, which meant Jett did not get his nap, no matter how hard he wished he’d get a text from his employer telling him that it was a slow day and he shouldn’t bother coming in.

The next best thing to a nap was coffee.

He only needed it to get him through five more hours before he could go home and crash, so when he pushed open the door to the coffee shop he’d heard only good things about, he was wondering how best to phrase, ‘Give me something that’s going to keep me wired for five hours and then knock me out’ without sounding just odd.

He hadn’t bothered changing out of his uniform, though he’d discarded the tie into his messenger bag and only wore the coat to keep out the chill from the breeze outside. His blonde hair was tied in a low, unprofessional ponytail to prevent the breeze from blinding him with his own hair.

He had no shame in his appearance as he placed his hand on the door and pushed it open. Stepping into the shop, he was already interested; coffee brewing was always a pleasant smell to him, and the artistic environment was unique enough that he imagined one day, when he was less burdened by the call of sleep, he’d have liked to come in here and have a better look.

As it were, the lines were short enough that he figured he might be able to snag a seat and sit down for a few minutes before he started his walk to work. A quick glance at his watch further proved his theory; he’d been rushing and now had a good few minutes to spare.

Jett usually frequented the usual fast food restaurants for his caffeine fix, and the menu here seemed much more complex than just ‘a cup of coffee’, so while he was glancing over what they had to offer, he found himself drifting to the front of the line as the rest of the customers were served.

No one was behind him—probably a good thing, considering he had no idea what he wanted to order. He ran his fingers over the countertop, tapping them in a bored, thoughtful manner as he considered what he was going to order, though fatigue settling in already, he mostly looked like he had just zoned out staring up at a display.

It was a slow night. Harmony was searching for things to do and had cleaned every surface in the house at least twice. She had now taken to experimenting behind the counter, mixing up drinks with the leftover coffee and syrups and handing them out to random customers to taste and critique. That’s how she came up with her Chocolate Covered Cherry drink and how she came up with some of the others she’d concocted over the years. It made her happy to experiment and the customers were grateful and honest in their appraisals. The drinks were free and most of the people she knew.

This was very much a family place. Most people knew the staff and each other. The owner, Mr. Marcello, specialized in Italian espresso and imported the stuff from all over Italy. That and art were what they were known for…well, and Harmony herself. She brought a fair number of people in, her photography habit nearly infamous. The bulletin boards were plastered with autographed photos she’d taken of customers. Nearly all of them flattering or revealing in some sense. They were as varied as the artists they brought in and other work adorned the walls, too.

When he came in she didn’t take much note and cleaned up her mess. The counters needed to be wiped down again and then she got to take her break. The other two girls took care of the line while she worked and Harm finished what she was doing. She saw the blank expression on Jett’s face and the glossed look in his eyes and chuckled. She’d seen that expression in herself too many times to name. She didn’t sleep much anymore.

She knew exactly what he needed even if he didn. “Ava, charge him for a Shark’s Tooth.” That was the official title of the drink because the strength and taste of it bit hard on the person. The bitterness of it was strong and occasionally acrid but packed a wallop of caffeine. It would take that far off look right off his face. She whipped up one of the house specialties, not on the menu, and blended it in a pitcher before pouring it into a cup.

Here.” She slid the impossibly small cup down in front of him, a double shot of double packed espresso inside. She’d flavored it with vanilla and a tiny bit of crème so it wouldn’t be as bitter as it should have been. “Drink it down in one gulp if you’re going to at all.” She warned - a clear indication of its strength. It would keep him wide awake and active for hours before the inevitable crash.

Jett glanced at the little cup in front of him with slight suspicion, though wasn’t going to cow out or refuse a drink from such a pretty girl. He lifted the cup to his lips and downed it in a single gulp; the flavor hit him almost the same time he set the cup back down on the counter; his nose wrinkled at the bitterness, but it was exceptionally refreshing.

Though there was no time for the caffeine to have actually kicked in, the warmth of the liquid rushing down his throat was enough to give him. A few short seconds after the flavor wasn’t so strong, Jett decided that he liked the aftertaste, and nodded gratefully to the girl in front of him. “You have good taste,” he decided, though assumed she’d know what was good if she worked here.

Still, he had a bit of a walk in front of him and he wanted something warm to keep him alive. “Do me a favor,” he said, now deciding he was going to just avoid anything on the menu all together. “…I’ve never been here before,” he said, despite the fact that he knew it must be obvious enough. “Can you just get me something warm that’ll keep me from freezing out there—and preferably something that isn’t going to give me cavities. Other than that,” he shrugged; he didn’t have a favorite flavor or a preferred taste, just knew that he didn’t have a sweet tooth and like all those fancy flavors and sweeteners they liked to toss into the coffee. “Go wild.”

The double shot of espresso might keep him awake and give him the energy he needed, but he wasn’t going to leave here without at least trying something that didn’t just shock him awake.

"You got it."

He was definitely new and could take a lot on faith. "Ava, just charge him for the Shark's Tooth. This drink's on me." She was experimenting, after all. He'd volunteered himself to be her guinea pig. This she did anyway, for free, and knew by now what flavors went together and what didn’t. Coffee wouldn’t give him a lasting warmth, not this time. He had all the caffeine he needed, anyway. She brewed up some tea that Alex gave her, a basic blend, and added a little cream and some plum and currant flavoring. It wasn’t too sweet and the currant would stay with him.

She slid the steaming up toward him and smiled. He was actually pretty cute now that she got a look at him. Cute, and new. That was a very good combination. With any luck she could keep him coming back again so she could see that cute face more often. Harmony never had a problem with anyone because she tended to get along with everyone. A social chameleon, that’s what her mother called her once. She tended to believe it.

I’m going on my break, Ava.” She stripped her apron and left it on the counter as she walked out from behind it. Ava just gave her a look, knowing what this meant. Harmony liked her job because it afforded her the chance to take photos and flirt. These were two things crucial to her lifestyle. And if it wasn’t one she was doing right now it had to be the other. She motioned toward his drink. “Taste it first and then I’ll tell you what’s in it.

All the confidence in the world; that’s what she exuded. She was good at that, actually. “You’re new here. Let me show you around.

She motioned for him to follow her around the, admittedly, small coffee shop pointing out some of the artistic pieces and telling who gave it to them and then showed him the main bulletin board. “This is all my work. I’m going to be a photographer someday. After college, I guess.

Though, she didn’t know how college was going to help her become a photographer past maybe getting a liberal arts degree.

Glancing to the girl as she moved from behind the counter, Jett dropped a ten on the counter, assuming that would cover the Shark’s Tooth they’d provided for him earlier. The gesture of a free drink was nice, and Jett certainly wasn’t going to turn it down, nor did he question Harmony’s command to sample the drink; it might have been steaming, but he wasn’t going to sissy out just because it looked hot. He wrapped his hand around the cup, savoring the warmth. Though he had the opportunity to interrupt the girl to thank her, he instead waited.

The tea wasn’t what he was expecting, though it wasn’t in any way unpleasant. When the green haired girl stopped in front of the main bulletin board, he glanced over the photographs and nodded. “Seems like you’ve got good tastes all around,” he mused; the fact that he’d already had at least a quarter of the tea she prepared for him indicated that he liked the tea she’d given him, and his interest was piqued with the photographs.

He wasn’t a critique by any means, but the photographs she laid claim to held a certain amount of candid appeal; she was skilled and the photographs were easy to admire. “You’ll probably be famous one day,” he said with a little nod; if she could capture so many people in such an artistic way, he could very easily see her as being successful in pursuing photography as a career. Then again, he didn’t know what criteria made for a ‘good’ photographer, but instinct told him that he liked what he saw, and that was good enough criteria for him.

Jett tore his gaze from the bulletin to glance over Harmony’s figure, once more sipping at the tea she’d given him. As he lowered the cup and swallowed, he met her eyes again. “Do you give all your first timers a free cup and tour, or was today just my lucky day?”

"It's a special blend of tea my friend Alex made for me and I added in some plum and currant flavoring. The currant should help you feel warm even once you're finished. It used to be used in the olden days to treat fevers."

When he complimented her, she blushed appropriately. The coloring suited her but she looked away quickly so he wouldn't see much of it, if at all. Instead she turned her focus back to the bulletin board, studying her work. Many of them were signed by the patrons and were an object of significance in the coffeehouse. People wanted a spot in the collage and this inspired many trips to the shop that he boss certainly liked. That's why no one ever stopped her from bringing her camera to work.

"Thanks. This isn't really the kind of photography I'm passionate about but it's fun. I have photo albums full of my favorite shots at home. I also work outside and do some model work."

Though her model work was few and far between because it cost money for wardrobe, sets and such and while she used to use the Crystal Academy theatre since she'd been back she no longer attended where her mother worked so using the theatre was now off limits. Still, she liked interacting with models and her type of photography demanded it. She had so many ideas yet to experiment with. None of these she brought up to him simply because she could be long winded when she talked about her photo shoots and what she really wanted to try.

That or people looked at her funny. A teenager wanting to be a pinup photographer? What did she want to do, shoot for Playboy? Harm hated having to explain that porn and burlesque were two entirely different things and mostly avoided the topic until she got close enough to someone to show them her old attempts with models or on herself. By then they mostly knew her philosophy on Burlesque. It was just one of those things.

"It helps that you're cute. But mostly it was that look in your eyes. I've seen it before." In herself, anyway. She gave him a charming smiled, leaning against the wall next to a painting that looked suspicious if you looked at it in a certain light. She crossed her arms over her body, appraising him honestly for a few long moments and not being all that subtle about it. "So...why haven't I ever seen you in before? You're adorable. You should come in and perk up my day lots of times."

A slow smile twitched onto Jett’s face as Harmony carried on; he wasn’t the sort of guy who didn’t enjoy appropriate flattery. He might have preferred compliments that were a bit more manly--not just 'cute' and 'adorable', but he wasn't going to complain about her choice of diction. He had a sly aura about him and glanced at her with a playful smile, clearly not shy about her giving him a look over. He took the opportunity to return the favor in an equally obvious manner. “I’ll bet you make for a great saleswoman. Is that how you get all the guys to come back? Feed them flattery and flash that pretty little smile of yours? It must work like a charm,” he said, winking.

The tea was calling to him, he took another sip and seemed rather nonchalant about everything still. Certainly this was a nice change from just walking into some bland fast food place on his way to work—free drink, free tour, conversation with a pretty girl? All right, maybe he’d come back.

“Certainly caught my eye,” he added. “You, that is. Not just the art here. Not that it isn’t unique,” he said, tone silky and still playful, “But you’ll have to forgive me if I’d rather just look at you. I’m Jett,” he introduced, holding his hand out to shake. “What do they call you around here?”
PostPosted: Mon Nov 07, 2011 1:27 pm

"Goddess" she returned easily, grinning.

Finding someone who played her games as well as she could was rare and enjoyable. When he looked her over in return she wasn't the least bit self conscious. She even winked at him and uncrossed her arms, holding her body open. With that moment between them out of the way Harmony relaxed. Obviously, she'd found someone who she could enjoy time with. She reached out and offered him her hand.

"I'm Harmony."

Actually, that was one of the reasons her boss kept her around and let her back in after a month and a half absence. The coffee house was known for their sweet staff, espresso, artistic atmosphere, and Harmony herself. She was known for her flirtation, her knack for knowing what people would enjoy, and her charming ways actually brought people coming in. She usually thought of herself as a sideshow attraction more than an employee but, hey, it paid for her photography.

And her boss never minded her giving away free drinks because she always brought in business three fold for it. She didn’t do it often but certainly to cute guys. Which worked out well cause she was the only single girl that worked in the shop. She liked hearing the compliments coming from his direction, too. What girl wouldn’t?

You should stop in more often. I bet you’re a mint mocha kind of guy…when you’re not nearly exhausted.

She had a knack for guessing, throwing things together people would like. It was a talent and she used it.

He should have figured she’d come up with some clever title for herself; the smile that graced his face was one of perpetual amusement. ‘Goddess’ of the coffee shop? He’d believe it; she had the charisma to make such a claim and not come across as obnoxious, and was very obviously in her element. “Well, now, Harmony.”

Jett gave her an approving nod as he withdrew his hand and let it rest by his side. “I suppose I could work it into my schedule to come back and pay you a visit some time. I might have to try some mint mocha, if you get the impression it’d be to my taste. I admit, I always pictured myself as more of the black coffee type of guy but,” he shrugged. “I guess I’ll try anything once. Especially if a pretty girl suggested it. Not every day you meet a goddess, anyway, is it?”

He didn’t comment on the fact that she’d noted how exhausted he looked; it wasn’t like he wanted to highlight that he hadn’t been getting all the sleep he needed, or that he was working himself a little too hard. Jett did note, however, that it might be in his best interest to tone down the amount of time he spent awake during the day in order to invest in some much needed sleep. It was no good if he was walking around looking like a zombie; if Harmony had been able to notice so easily, he noted to himself that he very much needed to invest in some sleep so as to prevent awkward conversations and a decrease in physical attractiveness.

Awkward conversations, Jett could handle. Not looking his best? That was practically a sin.

Definitely Mint Mocha, but dark chocolate and just a hint of espresso for the bitter taste. From what it sounded like he was a pain and pleasure kind of guy - liking a little bad with the good. She had him pegged and was rather pleased with herself for it. She could have been wrong but in her confidence she didn't tend to think so. He was older than she was by a few years, maybe. A senior? She wasn't sure. She didn't mind much either way since he couldn't be that much older than she was.

The term "jail bait" never once came to mind mostly because she was a good girl despite the sexual things she was interested in.

"Black coffee is too boring for you. It's what you get if you don't know how to drink coffee."

She didn't think too much about why he was tired. She was, too. Nights spent in bed without sleeping properly took their toll on her worn psyche. She got through it by pretending and keeping a smile on her face. No one could tell how scared she was inside. No one could tell how much she needed help. She just pretended like everything was ok and some days, like this one, she didn't have to pretend for a few minutes at a time. It wasn't recovery but it was close. And, hell, she made a new friend.

He got her stamp of approval, anyway. He was cute, funny, flirty, and had decent enough taste. He liked her, didn't he? That was proof enough of his greatness. Besides, he seemed to like art, too, which was always going to be a plus in her book. The flirting helped. The compliments helped. She reached out his touched his hand, smiling broadly at him in her very Harmony way.

"If you keep coming back I'll educate you. Pretty soon you'll know exactly who you are by the coffee you drink."

And she'd know more about a handsome stranger. It was win win.

Jett raised a brow when her fingers brushed his hand, but he made absolutely no effort to draw away. Harmony’s hands were warm; the tea had done a fair share to warm him up, but there was a unique sort of warmth that only humans delivered. There was a human connection—not just heat, but comfort. Not the Jett needed comfort; on the contrary, he had considered himself to be doing pretty well, all things considered. He was in one piece, more physically fit than ever, making good money at the antique store, doing good in school—even the stocks he’d been investing in were raking him in a lot of cash.

Jett’s life was good. Solitary life, albeit. He hadn’t had a lot of time for friends, and it seemed like the only human interaction he’d had sans at school was with his mother, and for as much as he loved the woman it just wasn’t the same as bumping into someone that really caught your eye.

Harmony had done just that. Sure, Jett had his fair share of pretty girls to play around with, but it was easy to get bored of the cookie-cutter type girls—the ones who always fit the same old generic mold. Harmony was an artist—and a good looking one—which immediately made her far more interesting than the vast majority of females that he could interact with.

He might not have spoken with her for long, but he liked her. She wasn’t shy, consumed with self doubt, or overwhelmed by him, which naturally meant that he was entranced by her. And the tea. The tea was delicious, and at the rate he’d been sipping at it, there was no way it was going to last him more than a few more minutes.

“You make coffee sound like it’s some sort of self discovery ritual,” he teased, though certainly wasn’t going to argue. The place had grown on him rather quickly; it wasn’t out of his way any more than any other restaurant he might stop by before work, and he’d found out rather rapidly as the energy from the Shark’s Tooth Harmony had given him earlier that the drinks were both delicious and highly effective. Energy was already coursing through him, be it a mixture of the caffeine or just his body’s natural reaction to being in such close proximity to a girl who had caught his eye—or both.

He had shifted position just slightly, facing Harmony more directly after her hand brushed against his again; it was his way of acknowledging the touch with more than just a charming smile or coy wink. “What can you tell about someone just by what they drink, hmm?” he asked; he was in no way challenging her, though was certainly curious to be educated.

Harmony laughed, not the least bit surprised to be put on the spot by his question. She'd answered the same one many times before to likewise skeptical patrons who wanted to know what their drink of choice said about them. She'd made this sort of a coffee fortune telling art, matching people to what they like. The dark chocolate mocha, which she'd end with for instance, told her some things about her patron.

"Everything we are and do says something about us. You are what you eat, so they say."

But for now she leaned closer, conspiratorially, and dropped her voice. There were plenty of examples to choose from. If he really wanted to know, she'd show him what it was she did. This was why she was at home here in coffee land. She'd show him. All she had to do was find the right one. As her eyes scanned the shop she found her target and tapped his hand, pointing him in the right direction.

"That's Harold." she said, pointing to a middle aged man across the room absorbed into his computer with a cup long since gone cold by his side. She'd named his drink of the second visit. "He's a hazlenut latte which means he's sorta plain but desperate for someone to take notice of the sweet side of him just under the surface."

Then she scanned the room for another regular and pointed to a college aged girl with pink streaked black hair and a tattoo on her neck. She was working on a sculpture in the corner of the room. "She's a Darjeeling tea with a splash of mint, rosewater, and orange. That means she's really classic underneath but just a little edgy and likes to be complicated. Very high maintenance and she's trying very hard to appear more exotic than she is."

Then she looked at him, motioning to herself in her own work outfit which happened to not be her school uniform today, thank God. She was very calm and matter of fact, using herself as the example before she rammed her point home using him.

"And I'm an apple cinnamon tea with cream and a little bit of chili powder. I'm simple, sweet, and can appreciate a little bite in my life."

Then she took up his hand and studied his palm, as if trying to read it before looking up to catch his eyes. A coy smile tugged at the corner of her lips. She found she was having fun with all of this and really liked being around him and talking to him. He was fun and easy to spend time with. It was almost a shame she'd have to go back to work soon. But no customers could stay in there forever. They were closing in just a short while.

"And you - the dark chocolate mint mocha with a twist of espresso. You certainly have a dark side but you like things to appear tidy. There's a little bitter in your sweet. You're pretty good at maintaining control and appreciate just a little bit of resistance to your pull. I bet you're just a bit of a masochist, too."

She kept her eyes glued to his as she spoke and only when she finished did she let his hand drop from her own. She licked her lips and paused.

"Am I right?"

Another smile had twitched onto Jett’s face rather early on as she went through the descriptions of the patrons and their drinks. He hadn’t had any idea how accurate she was with the rest of them, but he’d taken careful note of her drink and what she decided it said about her. He could certainly see Harmony as that sort; she’d been sweet enough so far, didn’t seem difficult to deal with, and if she was so willing to approach a customer and flirt—and take their hand and play fortune teller? Definitely could see that she liked a little bite in her life. Nothing better than being overly forward to spice your life up.

Which was totally fine with Jett; Harmony’s uniqueness kept him on his toes and wondering what to expect next. He was a logical sort of person—didn’t believe in horoscopes, palm reading or fortune telling; he’d been told that it was all just manipulation for those of weak constitution, though it had become rather hard to argue for such a claim by the time she’d delivered her assessment.

“Almost,” he answered, glancing to his palm for a split second before he lifted his eyes to hers again. “I appreciate more than just a little resistance. Not really much fun if it’s a one sided game. The masochist bit, now that’s clever.”

He didn’t seem insulted, though with the way he carried himself it would have taken a rather sharp stab to his ego to really shake him from throne of confidence. Instead, he was intrigued. “Not something I would have pinned myself as. But maybe you see more in me than I do. All that from a drink, though.”

He laughed—light, and clearly impressed. “A drink you picked out for me just by looking at me, and a description based on a drink I’ve never tried. You’re something, now, I’ll give you that. The next time I’m here, you’ll have to make me one, I’m eager to see just what’s so special about this drink.”

It was as simple as that; Harmony had hit more than a few things on the nail, and while he might not have described himself in such a manner, there was no way that he could deny her claims without lying to her and himself. She’d done a damn fine job of hooking him; he had no doubt in his mind that he’d have to come back here and try one of these drinks, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to complain about an excuse to spend more time with Harmony if she was going to keep things this interesting.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 08, 2011 1:20 pm

"I'm that good." she assured him.

Harmony was a charmer. It was simply part of who she was. She didn't know anyone she couldn't charm. Most people trusted her about their drinks and walked away happy, even if they got the wrong thing. She knew what was best for them...even if they didn't. A few good years of experience and observation taught her well. So her boast wasn't without merit.

When he responded she laughed, happy to see that once again she'd been nearly spot on. There were other things she could have said, deeper things, but she'd be delving into pure speculation there and wouldn't have been supported by observation. She wasn't going to go there with him, not yet. They needed more time for her to try and do something more than scratch the surface.

"I'll make you one to go. Your tea has to be getting low by now with how you've drinking it."

She headed back toward the counter and walked behind it, whipping up the drink with very little time or trouble. She certainly didn't mind taking the time. Jett was proving to be very interesting but it all seemed a little one sided. Sure he could flirt but she was doing the entertaining. She hoped he'd perk up a little next time and try to surprise her a time or two. She slid the cup across the counter and winked.

"I'm sure the ten covers it." Or her tips, whatever.

It was everything she promised - rich, strong, sweet and bitter with just a hint of that smooth clean minty taste throughout. It was all very well blended but then again, she'd done it by hand. It was rare to get a drink mixed by hand and not by blender but it was late, things were being cleaned, and it was slow. Washing a spoon was easier than washing a blender. She didn't even bother to put on her apron again while she was behind the counter.

"Go ahead."

Jett didn’t mind watching her work; to him, how easily she moved around this place was rather fascinating. Sure, he knew his way around the antique store, but even then, things were always changing as inventory was either bought or sold. He was not brilliant in the kitchen—he could make things enough to keep him alive, but when it came to spices and herbs? It was the same as the proper way to mix a drink—no idea. Watching how quickly she could make the drink gave him an excuse to keep his eyes on her, to watch the way she moved and worked with such ease.

In the time it took her to finish making the new cup, he drank the rest of the tea and discarded the empty cup so that he wouldn’t have to worry about carrying the two drinks. When she had finished, and he had the steaming drink in front of him, he lifted it, took in the aroma, and then sipped at it.

He had never been so impressed with a drink in his life.

When it hit his tongue, he was skeptical, though by the time he’d taken the first sip, he knew he’d be back for another one of these. The flavor lingered in his mouth for a few seconds after he’d swallowed, and instead of speaking he chose to relish it. His eyes closed and let out a slow sigh before he nodded and returned his gaze to Harmony.

”You are a wonder, my dear. Right on the nail with that one, I’ll give you that. I’m impressed,” he said, and was in more ways than one. It was hard for him to keep the cup lowered and not want to take another sip. He leaned forward, just a bit, propping himself up by planting his elbow on the counter. “But I feel a like tonight’s been a little one sided. You’ve treated me to everything. Maybe one of these days you’ll let me make it up to you and take you out to dinner somewhere. Then you can teach me all there is to know about your people reading skills.
