Empty. Eileifr wandered about with a hollow look to his eyes, what was once a dazzling blue was now steely and like a stormy sky that promised rain. He walked with little purpose, his head held between his shoulder blades, he was beaten, not physically but his soul was battered and was hidden deep within him away from the world and what was left of it fled from fear of being destroyed totally. Eileifr had left the remains of his once proud pride behind him, what remained was not something he cared to protect, it was all the evil and the bitter twisted ideas of greatness that his father had always fought against, it was the political lies than had broken the heart of his love and ultimately killed her. Nothing to fight for, nothing to defend, Eileifr felt he had little purpose now and wondered without thought.

There was a strange sort of comfort from simply walking, the simply task of placing one paw in front of the other was his only thought, the rest of him was numb. He hadn't eaten for some days now, he drank went he past a water source though he didn't search for them. He was half his size and he was a sorry sight. He did not sleep and walked in a zombie like state, it was the only thing that kept him moving, the simple task of moving.

User ImageAvonlea hurt. She had recently encountered some hyena and... it hadn't ended well.

She was hunting when they hyena first spotted her, she supposed. She'd been following a herd of zebra for a couple of days now, bidding her time. Like most huntresses, she kept low to the ground and moved quietly. She was thinking about taking down one of the females, who looked like she'd been injured before, since it was walking with a limp and couldn't run as well as the others. The best ones to pick off were the hurt and young, yes? She wasn't in the mood to deal with a mother zebra, so the young were safe.

When she'd attacked the lame zebra and brought it down is when she smelled the hyena. They ignored her growls and warnings as she kept her jaws clamped firmly over her meal's throat. Initially she'd thought there'd been only one, but then two came into view. Then three... Now she was getting wary and thinking it wasn't worth it.

Just as Avonlea was fixing to let them have the zebra, something jumped on her back and bit at the back of her throat. Claws tore into her skin, which caused her to cry out and fall. She had managed to shake the fourth hyena off when the other three started to charge her.

Instinct took over and Avonlea had fled in the opposite direction, which happened to end in a sudden cliff. She realized it when it was too late. She'd fallen, taken a beating against the ground, but she was still alive. Her legs sore, blood dripping down her back and staining her fur.

So she lay there now, at the base of the cliff and just cringed in pain. She wasn't going to die, she knew that, but the once royal female felt worse than she ever had in her life.

"Maybe I should have let them kill me..." She missed her parents, she missed her pride... The female knew she couldn't have any of that back and it broke her heart to think that. She'd never hated her life this much before.

Noise was something muffled and incomprehensible to Eileifr, he was muted and everything looked to be a shade of grey and out of focused. One paw, superseded by another paw, he walked forward. Open savannah plains lay on his right and hills forming on his left, his eyes didn't follow the landscape, he was unobservant he simply looked at the terrain three steps in front of him. He didn't hear the birds chattering in the bush which provided limited protection on the open savannah, neither did he note the dry rustle of limited grass and ground foliage that had survived the summer season but the sound of a pack of hyenas laughing in pursuit was not something even a numbed being could avoid, the sound was not one any lion enjoyed hearing. The laughter was demented and hounded away his numbness for a moment as he looked up with mild disinterest at the top of the hill to his right where the sound resonated from.

At the brow of the hill stood a lioness whom looked to be harrowed and bloodied about the neck, she turned to stare over her shoulder and Eileifr spotted what she was looking at, three hyenas where running towards her, impulse set her and she jumped. The hill was not a sheer drop but it was something even he would struggle to find footing on even in better shape than he was now. She tumbled and rolled and slide down the last metre on her side to land defeated at the base of the hill. Eileifr watched as the hyenas watched from the top of the hill, satisfied that the lioness wouldn't return from whatever if was they had first chased her from they turned back the way they had come the haunting sound of laughter drifting away to silence.

Eileifr stood, he stood and he felt his pains. He wanted to simply walk by, to leave the female to her own fate as life had to him but that was not his true nature and deep down he couldn't simply walk by. He started up again, one paw after another and after the motion of walking set back in he felt numbness come over him once again and he welcomed it. He reached the beaten female, he stopped and looked down at her, his eyes were empty and hollow but something pulled deep within him and he bowed down and pressed his nose to her throat, just below her chin and nudged her very softly and then caught her eye. They were a golden yellow like the mornings sun on a winters day but they had that same glazed look as his own and he recognised the hurt he himself felt to a degree. He rumbled softly, 'Can you walk?'

Tears were forming in those golden eyes as she thought back on what her life had once been. Uselessness washed over her like the pain she was washing over her. She hadn't seen another lion when she gazed out. All she was seeing was the dried, dead grass before her. Then again, Avonlea wasn't looking for another lion. Thoughts of help hadn't even occurred to her as she laid there. Just thoughts that she'd probably be eaten by another pack of hyenas did. She was finding herself hating hyenas even more than she already did, because now she was starving, bleeding and just starting to give up on happiness in her life. Before this she had a semi-positive view, as simple as it was.

If she ate, she could live. If she lived, she could eventually start her pride back up, but make it better than her parents. Then she'd feel whole again. When they deprived her of her food her whole thought process shattered into a million little pieces and nearly broke her spirit. What kept her from completely giving up at this point was that death would hurt a lot worse than she hurt right now.

By the time the male walked up to her, her eyes had been closed and all she could hear was the beat of her own heart in her ears. The gentle nudging startled her and caused her eyes to pop right open before she looked up. It was.. a male. His voice sent a vibration through her ears with the low quality of it. He sounded haunted, like there was no real feeling in it. Much like her own voice had been when she'd spoken earlier.

Then she realized she hadn't answered his question after several quiet minutes of staring. Her tongue came out and licked the dirt and blood off that hadn't completely crusted over and took a shuddering breath. "I hadn't tried..." She was afraid of more pain. She didn't now of her legs were broken or just beaten up. Either way, she knew if she stood she'd cry out and probably fall back over.

A feeling came that the male would insist she tried, so before he could, she slowly managed to roll herself to her stomach, cringing and gasping in pain as she did. The hyena tore into her skin right above her shoulder blades, so moving was even more pain. Taking her time, Avonlea took a deep breath and shakily rose to her paws. But she was right, the pain in her legs proved that they weren't broken, just battered and she cried out in pain as she stood. She wouldn't fall. She wouldn't. Avonlea was much too stubborn to take two steps back after this step forward.

"I think... I can manage a short.... distance." Her teeth were grit together and she was panting with every few words. The pain course through her body, a constant reminder she had lived through something that would have killed a weaker lion.

Eileifr took a step away from the female as she rolled to her belly, she looked in a great deal of pain, physical pain as well as the soul crushing pain he saw in her eyes. He felt as if a a vine was tied to his soul and was tugging at it, he felt something, feelings where strange to Eileifr he'd felt little since losing his father and mate, a somewhat welcomed numbness that shut out the emotional pain but he saw himself reflected in the beaten female and he wanted to aid her and it away help himself. He noted that way in which she winced at the pain as she moved, the shaking and trembling that ran through her shoulders and down her forelegs, but she was strong and clung to something Eileifr himself had lost, a will to live perhaps, an ounce of hope. Her breath came in short pants as she barred the pain and he ran his eyes over her wounds, she'd not walk far in that condition at all but he knew he needed to get some form of fluid in her but he was unacquainted with the landscape and he couldn't afford to make the lioness travel to far.

He stared at her and them looked about him, their was a crop of vegetation just away across the savannah plains, growth as green as that after the summers heat and toil suggested a close reliable water source. He turned to the injured female his voice was gruff though not like an older male lion simply from one having not used it much recently. 'You'll grow stiff if you don't move, the wounds to your neck aren't deep and will heal quickly, I shall clean them in a while but you need to move, your bruised from your fall, walk, you're hate me for it at first but it'll warm your muscles and stop them stiffening.' He didn't move but he kept his eyes on her. He waited for her to move and he'd match her pace when she choose to start offering support should she stumble.

Oh but she wanted to just collapse and just sleep for a long, long time. Forever if possible, though she knew they called that death. She sighed and looked up to the male as he spoke to her like a cub. Anger boiled into her stomach at the though of being treated like that and she let out a little growl. However, he wouldn't know if it was an angry growl or a growl of pain; once she heard it she wasn't so sure, either.

Those golden eyes slipped close and Avonlea really just stood there for a long moment, trying to acclimate herself to the pain that felt like it was coming from her very veins. "D.... Do not talk.. to me like a c-cub." Her words lost any ounce of threat meant to be there as she gasped in pain. Talking would do her no good.

I've got to move. Oh gods, but it hurts.... The tears that had brimmed her eyes since this ordeal fell down her round cheeks and fell against her paws, letting her know that, yes, she had finally admitted she was too weak to handle this much pain. However, she felt like if she didn't move this male would keep talking to her in that manner. So, shakily she made her first move with her front leg. Thousands of spikes of pain prickled her shoulder and caused the female to cringe again, ears ducking against her scalp. However, she managed a little distance before the pain became almost white hot and she had to stop again.

It was pathetic how she was panting now after only a pawful of steps. She was going to get those hyenas once she was healed up well enough. She'd make them pay. Avonlea wasn't one to hate, because she wasn't supposed to. That's what she was groomed to think. Hatred made justice unfair. However, attacking a lioness, unprovoked was a call for hatred. Were all hyenas like that? She didn't know, but at the moment, she hated each and every last one of them. Down to the pups.

Groaning after a time, she started her pace again, listening to the beating of her heart in her ears once more. Her vision was getting blurry from the tears and she felt herself growing ever dizzy. She prayed they made it somewhere safe soon.

Eileifr wasn't keeping eye contact with her, perhaps if he wasn't simply a shell of his former self he'd be more caring however in his current state he simply functioned, so his eyes didn't see the heat that boiled up to a glow in those golden orbs and the soft growl was simply taken for a groan of pain. He stood waiting for her to move, perhaps she was trying to master the idea of fighting with the pain before moving slowly however she responded to him with words. He turned to face her, looking her in the eye as she squeezed out the words through gasps of pain, his eyes were hallow, perhaps if he'd not been so haunted he'd of responded differently, apologise perhaps as he wasn't one to temper but with himself tucked away from harm he simply reacted by pulling away from her. He watched her mutely as she took a few steps, her ears flattened to her skull in pain and then after a couple of paces she stopped.

He couldn't see her eyes from the distance that now parted them but he wasn't really looking at her any longer, she had scolded him for belittling her though this only registered to him as not wanting aid. He wanted to be walking again, he didn't like standing still as he seemed to give permission for memories to float to the fore front of his mind. He shook himself out and then began walking once again, paw after paw and his memories faded as he simply focused on the motion of his body and the flow of the ground beneath him. He passed the female with little though and continued towards the green outcrop of vegetation noting his own need for water.

He just pulled away from her. Avonlea narrowed her eyes at that and her teeth showed as she managed to snarl at him. However, since she wasn't focused on moving, it caused her to fall back onto the ground. A gasp and a pained moan escaped her lips as she landed, rolling to her side because she was just in so much pain. Wheezing a bit, she closed her golden eyes and shook her head. Thinking back, the female didn't even know why she bothered to get up in the first place.

Maybe it was because she actually believed in someone for an instance to at least bring her somewhere self. Once again the once royal lioness was disappointed with how the situation turned out. However, she wasn't about to be defeated. She'd made it this far, and the water was, apparently, right up there.

Just like the first time she got up, Avonlea was wracked with the burning pain. She felt her shoulders starting to bleed again as she. It took her a few long moments to get back to her paws again, but she wasn't about to cry out for help. Gasping when she was finally stable, her golden eyes closed and she just stood there. "Okay... Okay," she whispered between gritted teeth. Glancing up, she looked for the male and tried to figure out where this supposed vegetation was. Her vision was still a bit blurry, but his form was easy enough to spot.

Slowly, steadily, she made her way over to him and to the vegetation and water. When she was right by the water, Avonlea gave up standing and once more collapsed on the ground, groaning heavily and panted.

"Not that far you said.." Her voice was accusing and laced with the pain that flashed over her features.
