((OOC: I think I remember you mentioned a checkup BUT I MIGHT BE WRONG you may shoot me if that's the case OTL (did I just make a pun lmao))
~~~
Flo slumped into her chair tiredly as her second last patient left the nurse's office. At last, some rest. She'd had a long day examining nearly... what, 30 over students? Drew was out for the day trying to get ingredients for who knows what remedies and the friendly nurse had approached Flo to take over checkup duty. The woman had only agreed because a) no one else in campus was up for it at that point of time, and b) Drew was just so nice, she couldn't say no.
And anyway, Drew had assured her checkups were a simple routine thing that was conducted once in a while for random batches of students and anyone else who had just entered the academy. Just say hi to the patient, follow the steps in the list, ask if there're any more problems, and voila, done!
It sounded easy. Doing checkups on animals was one thing, doing checkups on fidgety, accident prone students was a whole new ball game. Flo had had several close shaves earlier on in the day, including a couple of fire breathing twins who'd started quarelling mid-checkup and nearly set the office on fire.
Animals were still the best.
Flo glanced down at her list. There was one last patient to go, a Juno Tsing...
Oh, Sharp Shooter. She'd seen him on the Tasean news every now and then, and more recently around and about in campus. They'd exchanged brief smiles from afar, but nothing more. She got up reluctantly from her chair and went to retrieve his medical file, time to prepare for her next patient...
((Nah, that's what I said. xD))
Was it just Juno's luck or what? He had been trying to find reasons or excuses to bump into the lovely Dr. Flo besides passing her in the halls or around campus when lo-and-behold... An opportunity presented itself.
Granted of course... He was the one that sent Drew that mysterious list of bizarro ingredients for a very old Tasean medicine that he insisted would help Drew in the future. Ah sweet innocent Drew... No match for Juno's persuasiveness, especially when he had an incentive or reason to be. Not even just that, he'd managed to squeeze in his check-up to be the very last in order to have more time to spend without interruptions from little bratty rookies.
How had he even found himself to have this budding crush on the doctor...? Well he wasn't quite sure. All he knew was that when he saw her in her white lab coat, with her glasses fixed on with that stern look on her face and her hair up in that loose bun... His heart went a flutter! There was just something very intriguing about her to him.
Plus the fact he'd had a terrible break up only just a few months ago... He needed someone new to keep his mind off things.
There was a particularly energetic bounce to his step as Juno walked down the hall toward the nurse's office. He wasn't sure what he was going to do yet exactly, but he was definitely going to try and charm the older woman. He peered around the corner of the open office door to find Dr. Flo rummaging for some files.
He whistled a little tune. "Hiya." He threw into the room, still leaning against the frame of the door with a smile. "I'm here for my check-up Miss...?" They'd never formally met before, so... It was best to pretend he didn't know her name, right?
A whistled tune distracted Flo from her rummaging momentarily, followed by a greeting of "Hiya. I'm here for my check-up Miss...?"
She straightened up and looked round. A tall man with dual toned hair and sunglasses(?) stood at the doorway, leaning against the frame with a disarming smile on his face.
"Doctor, Florence Mizuno. You must be Mr Tsing," she stated matter-of-factly while giving him a once over. Kind of flashy, and the pose was unnecessary, but then most heroes were flashy and did unnecessary things. Why should this one be any different?
"Take a seat, I'll be with you shortly," she gestured to the chairs off the side and went back to searching for his file.
"How have you been feeling lately?" she called out while she looked through the Ts. "Did you feel sick or nauseous any time within the last two weeks?"
Item number 1, ask how the patient feels, check.
"Doctor, Florence Mizuno. You must be Mr Tsing,"
Burn. She was so cold and callous. But that didn't deter Juno whatsoever. It only made a giant cat-ish grin appear on his face.
"Doctor, you can call me Juno. If you like." He said sweetly, as he slid over and into the patient's chair.
"Take a seat, I'll be with you shortly,"
"Okay!"
He was like an antsy little kid looking forward to that lollipop at the end of every doctor's visit, only the lollipop he was hoping for was more so a possible date with the Doctor. He was on the edge of his seat, with both hands propped up on his knees staring at Flo. Though his shades hid his eyes, there was a happy glow emanating from him. It seemed like he was so thrilled just to be this close to her for longer than a few seconds.
"How have you been feeling lately?" "Did you feel sick or nauseous any time within the last two weeks?"
"Hmmm." He thought, tilting his head a bit. "Mostly normal." He said with a smile.
"Though sometimes I've got a bit of a cough." Juno wasn't the type to complain about injuries or illness, and he didn't think much of it, but he figured it was something to say in order to get Dr. Flo to be a little more hands on. The cough however only started a few months ago after... That particularly bad battle with Blue Rose. He hadn't gotten it checked, since he was the type to avoid doctor visits at every possible turn unless it was absolutely mandatory. This visit had been the only voluntary visit he'd ever opted for in his life.
"Doctor, you can call me Juno. If you like."
Flo made a noncommittal hmm as she flipped through TEs, TIs, Tls... aha, Tsing.
"Okay!"
Flo pushed the file drawer back and turned just in time to see Juno Tsing practically skipping into his seat. She frowned. This was most unusual behaviour for a person coming for a checkup. She'd had to deal with black, cloudy faces all day and seeing someone so happy... perhaps he hit his head on his way here, who knew.
She slid into her chair behind the desk and began flipping through his file, skimming through the details quickly. Juno Tsing, family background, medical history...
"Hmmm. Mostly normal. Though sometimes I've got a bit of a cough."
She peered up at him through her glasses, lips pursed. That wasn't good news. His medical history was a slate of perfect health; no allergies or long term illnesses, not even the flu, just physical injuries when he got into scuffles with villains. Apparently he also had a reputation for avoiding medical checkups, according to the notes, which would mean small things like coughs were unlikely to show up in his file. So a "sometimes" cough was a little out of the blue. And why wasn't it recorded down in his file either?
But then again...
She looked at the file, then back at the visored man, and canted her head to the side in confusion; he didn't look very sick either to be honest. In fact, he was practically glowing with health.
Most unusual. Maybe he DID hit his head on the way here. But just to be on the safe side, it was probably better to follow through with the whole procedure.
"How long has the cough been going on... Juno? Any idea what the cause might be?"
Juno's sparkling smile faltered slightly as the doctor pursed her lips and looked at him sternly. It was just a cough. It was no big deal.
"It's probably nothing." He said reassuring her, though he wasn't quite sure why he was trying to. She'd asked if there was anything out of the ordinary.
"How long has the cough been going on... Juno? Any idea what the cause might be?"
"Maybe two months." He said with a shrug. "It started after this one fight I had, though I'm not sure how a thorn whip could cause a cough." He laughed a little. Honestly, it didn't make any real sense. Unless Blue Rose's whip was poisonous or had something in the thorns. But he'd never really heard of stories about that before, so he found it unlikely. Then again... She'd been awfully smug about something during their battle that day. And he'd been too inflated at the time to realize there was something fishy about it.
"Hm." He pushed his lip out thoughtfully and rubbed his cheek. What if there was something wrong with him? And what? Now he was curious. "Do you think there's something wrong with me, Doctor?" He asked innocently with a tilt of his head.
"It's probably nothing."
Of course it was probably nothing, he looked fine, Flo mentally reminded herself. Her tendency to read too much into details was still present apparently. And judging from the way Juno had reacted, she'd probably scared him too woops.
"Maybe two months. It started after this one fight I had, though I'm not sure how a thorn whip could cause a cough."
Flo hmm'd and made a note of it in the file. "Thorn whips, sounds like Blue Rose's style," she commented. It was common knowledge that the villainess just liked using those for the wow factor, that much Flo knew. And Flo had never heard of her thorn whips causing coughs.
But still, just in case Blue Rose had decided to upgrade her whips to include some new cough inducing poison...
"Hm. Do you think there's something wrong with me, Doctor?"
"No... not likely," she finished penning down her notes and straightened up to look at the man sitting across her, completely missing the sweetness in the other man's tone, "but just to stay on the safe side, did you get any wounds from the thorn whip? I'll need to take a look at them."
Juno was finding it difficult to charm this woman at all. She was impervious, and was clearly set on simply doing her job. She didn't notice his attempts at winning her affection.
A slight roadblock. But that was merely the challenge that Juno so loved. His brief worry over his health fading away.
"Yes of course Doctor." He said with a smile, removing his dark grey jacket and tossing it on the back of his seat and proceeding to stand in order to take off his white tank. He sat back down as he also tossed his tank onto the back of his chair.
"I got this one here," he pointed at the one around his right bicep, lifting his arm out and tracing it with his finger. "And also this long one." He traced his longest scar across from the mid-spinal area of his back all the way up over his left shoulder down to where it stopped, right by his heart. An especially large jagged-cut scar splatter where it ended.
"And then there's two around my ankles, but those are less fatal-looking." He said cheerfully, looking up again at Flo. His demeanor would make one think that such scars were an everyday occurrence, he didn't seem to think they were terrible in the least even though by the sight of them they were slightly jarring simply due to their length.
They were vicious reminders for Juno, but in front of the woman he was growing quite fond of those emotions didn't show at all. In fact, it was easier for him to ignore them because he was enjoying the company of the doctor.
"Yes of course Doctor."
Flo watched impassively, completely unperturbed as the young man stripped down to his bare chest before her...
and had to hold back a gasp when she saw the scars that trailed all over his body.
"I got this one here."
Goodness.
"And also this long one."
Flo frowned, that one was dangerously near his heart. Too near.
"And then there's two around my ankles, but those are less fatal-looking."
She blinked at the cheeriness in his tone. For someone who had survived what seemed to be near death situations with painful physical reminders, he was awfully cheerful. What a strange man...
"I see," she finally managed to say, after hesitating for a good bit and feeling unsure what an appropriate response would be. On one hand, she should be feeling empathetic. On the other hand, he looked so happy that empathy felt out of place.
In any case, she needed to inspect those scars for trace poisons, or anything out of place. She got up and walked around the desk towards Juno, gesturing for him to stand up as well.
"If you don't mind telling me," she began, careful to give him the option of declining in case it was a sensitive topic, "which ones were inflicted by Blue Rose?"
Juno was used to taking light of whatever injuries he accumulated, it was in his nature. He didn't want people to worry about him. But he could tell in the doctor's face that she was holding back one good gasp or two from seeing the giant gash in his shoulder. He had to admit it was rather gruesome up close, though his sisters had done a good patch job. He imagined that it would be far worse if he hadn't had their help.
But then again... Perhaps a visit to an actual hospital may have been better. Oh well.
"I know, it doesn't look good. But I promise you, I'm feeling fine." He reassured Flo with another smile. She was hesitant to respond from what he could tell. A part of him worried that perhaps this was hurting his chances to ask her out on a date. A pity date was the last thing he needed, but she didn't seem the type for that. Either way, he was hopeful for something out of this visit.
"I see."
"I hope you're not feeling bad for me." He added lightheartedly. "Scars and injuries come with the hero-business." He reminded her with a chuckle.
"If you don't mind telling me, which ones were inflicted by Blue Rose?"
"Mmm..." He thoughtfully rubbed his chin with a finger. "All of them." He said with a shrug and a grin. He had been extremely stupid that day, he was sure Doctor Flo would figure this fact out from that simple bit of information. Sigh. He just shot his chances, didn't he? She's going to think he's another stupid doofy arrogant hero. Maybe Hack was right, it was better not to chase this woman.
But he couldn't help it.
Flo shook her head slowly. "I... yes I know, but they're usually not THAT extensive," she replied reproachfully. Heroes, the younger ones tended to be so brash these days...
"Mmm... All of them."
Flo "tsk'd" in spite of herself. This one must either be really stupid, or incredibly brave. Or both.
"Just, try to be more careful next time alright..."
She leaned in for a closer look at the largest scar nearest his heart, fingers gently tracing around the edges of the ugly gash. It seemed like a perfectly normal scar that had healed over time... except, whoever did the patch job was clearly not a professional.
... but no matter. What's more important was that he was healthy and the scars weren't poisoned or anything. She straightened up.
"Well, there doesn't seem to be a problem." She gestured for him to put on his clothes as she went back behind the desk to note down the last of her observations in his file.
"If the cough still persists you should look for Drew, but if there's nothing else that'll be all." She looked up at Juno with a small smile. "I apologize it took a little longer than usual. You're free to go now."
"I... yes I know, but they're usually not THAT extensive," "Just, try to be more careful next time alright..."
Juno felt a little warm and fuzzy inside at Doctor Flo's nice words. Even if she thought he was a complete idiot, that was okay. Despite her tsk-ing, Juno felt marvelous now. And his worries were out the window about his silly little cough.
A shiver went down his spine as her fingers touched his chest. It wasn't particularly a blush effect, but just that if it were possible Juno was glowing even more than he had been on first entering the office. He was grinning so wide, like a little boy who'd just gotten his most impossible wish granted.
But when Flo straightened up and Juno tried to tone his glowing happiness down a little. If he was successful or not was questionable. Though it seemed she was not very good at reading him anyway, so if it showed he didn't care.
"Well, there doesn't seem to be a problem." "If the cough still persists you should look for Drew, but if there's nothing else that'll be all." She looked up at Juno with a small smile. "I apologize it took a little longer than usual. You're free to go now."
And just like that, in one quick instant, Juno's happy bubble had been popped. It was the fastest check-up he'd ever been to, granted he hadn't been to many. But still. His smile slowly turned into a sad dejected frown on having to leave this lovely lady's presence. But how could he possibly spend more time with her? Nothing came to mind. "Oh, not at all..."
He bit his lip. "... Are you busy... Now...?" Was his meek inquiry.
"... Are you busy... Now...?"
"Well, I still need to arrange all the medical files in order. But why...?"
Flo looked up, only to see Juno frowning... sadly? Heavens this man was terribly puzzling, all day people had been sighing with relief when they heard those very words. Why was he--
And then the pieces of the puzzle clicked.
His unusually happy demeanor when turning up for a medical, his sweet and honeyed tones, his cheeriness despite having to discuss the history of his scars, and now that he was free to leave, he looked sad. All those little things she'd pushed to the back of her head while concentrating on her task.
Could he possibly... had Juno been trying to...?
Flo shook the thought out of her head. No, that was crazy. Impossible. She was usually very observant when it came to people, and she had enough experience in detecting such signs when lonely colleagues (with rather poor personal prospects who were also possibly condemned to a lifetime of bachelorhood) in her old workplace tried to ask her out for dinner. She had to be reading this wrongly.
And really, this boy? With the looks of a model? Who could have his pick of girls any other day?
You must be addled in the brains Flo darling, maybe you need a checkup too.
She chuckled nervously in a poor attempt to fill the awkward pause.
"You know, for a moment I thought... never mind," she said half heartedly with a wave of her hand as if to dispel the thought. Maybe he was just concerned, yes that would explain it.
"Well, I still need to arrange all the medical files in order. But why...?"
Think Juno think. There had to be some way for him to stick around longer, right? But was she figuring it out? That he was interested? He didn't want to be too forward.
He had to play it cool.... Right? RIGHT? "Uh... Would you like some help with it?" He asked reproachfully, which a small smile. He had to find the right balance in his emotions, first he was happy then dejected. There had to be some middle ground or she'd read him like a book.
Unless she already had. In which case, he would have already failed. But. Things seemed okay. She looked confused or something.
"You know, for a moment I thought... never mind,"
Juno internally panicked for a second. So she figured it out, but she was doubting it. Which was good he supposed. That meant he wasn't completely obvious, or at least not obvious enough to her. If Hack were there, he'd be laughing his butt off at how much fail he was doing. The woman couldn't even catch a hint, even with how childish Juno was acting surprisingly enough.
Juno figured it would be better not to let his curious nose sniff out what she was going to say. So instead... "I hope... I'm not weirding you out? You must think I'm an idiot." Juno laughed and slid a hand through his hair, ruffling it a little before putting it at his side. And at that moment he realized he ought to put his shirt back on, but thought better of it for now as he watched Flo intently for a reply. He was nervous as to what she might say.
If she really did think of him as an idiot, he wasn't quite sure how he could change that impression. He was sure being flashy and show off-y would never attract a woman like her. But didn't they say that opposites attract? Maybe he was too hopeful.
