"It's been quite some time since I last dared to come here...", Valem's voice would mutter steadily as he approached the oasis, the first pit stop on his way to Hidden Sand; seeking out the crafters of the area in order to make repairs on his favored sword; Kiku-ichimonji, an elongated katana designed for slashing and slicing through armor - a beautiful blade of ancient origins.

Valem had last been to the oasis about five years ago, when he last needed repairs on the blade due to damages. Unfortunately the blade was never fully repaired due to lack of proper smiths at the time - and it had been told to Valem that he would only get about thirty to fifty impact slashes from it before the blade began to dull and crack again... Valem had gotten about one thousand slashes out of it, excluding his practice swings; likely due to his technique and forms amplifying the blade's natural edge to begin with.
However, there was no doubting this time that he would need proper repairs; the sword was nearing the end of its tether, and though it had no persona, Valem imagined it was quite angry at him for taking his grand old time visiting the oasis again.

With Kiku-Ichimonji out of commission, Valem only possessed half of his dual-wield; using only Kotetsu for the journey there. While powerful, and enabled with the strength to strike against a man's helmet and still retain its edge, the sword was shorter and thicker, and this meant restricting it to a more defensive role in the dual-wield.

Valem's temporary replacement for Kiku-ichimonji was a simple bone sword hardened like steel within his skeletal structure and shot out of his forearm to become a blade. At times he would instead remove a segment of his scapula to form a bone shield when circumstances arose that required heavier defenses on his part; though he preferred to create a sword due to his favored battle style. Also, it was a b***h to regrow a scapula.

He had expected that the smiths would not be too pleased with his treatment of Kiki-Ichimonji, he had even expected that he may need to dangle one out of their third-floor window before one agreed to assist him with the repairs; as had been the case last time and probably why the smith had not done the best of jobs repairing his favorite sword... He had NOT expected to see an ongoing steel fight his arrival.

'And so today goes from mildly quiet to a lot more interesting than expected...' - without Kiku-Ichimonji, Valem was not interested in getting into a fight with another ninja; at least not one who could pose a threat to him even with the blade. Instead he'd lingered on the outskirts and watched what he could without disrupting the battle before the fight was broken up.

A sudden nudge reminded him that he had been lost in thought again; jolting Valem to his senses.

"Oy, kid, don't lose your focus unless you want that blade of yours to come out like crap!", the blacksmith glared towards the red-cloaked swordsman with a furious glare, and Valem nodded as he continued to keep the hammer's rhythm against the molten steel. 'Note to self... murder the blacksmith with this sword...'

Unable to hire a blacksmith to make one of the famed katanas of the craftsmen, due to both his lack of proper funds, and his reputation acquired from his last visit; Valem had been forced to reforge the blade himself. Of course with his limited knowledge of the art, it would not be an easy task. And so Valem had gone about this method via different means.

Finding the best blacksmith in the village, Valem had snuck into the man's house in the dead of night, grabbed him by his ankles, and hoisted him into the air before dangling the poor man outside of his own window; shaking him quite violently in order to joggle him around until he finally agreed to apprentice Valem. The victory had been quite good, since it gave Valem the opportunity to create swords on his own without the need to visit this village again; although from what he had heard during this apprenticing period; certain techniques could augment the user's abilities if put to the right use. Thus Valem would probably have to stick around in this damned shithole of a town for another month of so in order to train with his forged sword...

Striking the blacksmith's hammer upon the molten metal, Valem gave a glance-over at his work; pleased to some degree that he was able to work the metal to his will. The style of the sword was simplistic; although he had no concerns over this; as his original katana pair; Kotetsu and Kiku-Ichimonji; had similar properties. Kotetsu was a Ninjato-style sword, short and thick; meant more for defense than offense. However it was also sturdy and had never faltered; in part because he could augment his skeletal structure to enhance his swinging strength in order to maximize their potential. The second of his swords, Kiku-Ichimonji, was a standard Tachi-style blade; and thus was longer and had a slight curve; allowing it to deliver swift slashes even when his off-hand was occupied with the secondary weapon.

However, for this new sword Valem had decided on two things. Firstly, it would be built for functionality, not any fancy tricks; thus he had decided on a standard Katana blade. Secondly, he would not be cheap on the materials; although this would cost both more hours of labor and incur a longer apprenticeship to pay off the debt. Any doubt that his sword would function made it a useless blade; not to mention if it broke in combat he would be vulnerable to counter attacks.

As the blade itself finished, Valem looked over his work and was fairly pleased. It was a thicker blade than Kiku-Ichimonji, but favored a longer reach than Kotetsu. The straight blade would also make stabbing attacks more effective than with a curved blade, although in a dual-wield style the stabbing thrust tended to leave oneself open. Either way, the sword would work with either with a shield or with another sword; the very reason he'd come for a new blade to begin with...

Carefully Valem began the finishing touches on his work. One wrong move in the finishing process, and the entire piece of work would be useless... His handle was constructed to fit properly, the blade was well greased and at a perfect sharpness. the hilt and pommel were ready to attach as soon as the metal finished heating All he had to do was piece the entire thing together into one fluent blade...

"Alright... I'll take over from here.", the blacksmith who had gave him the apprenticeship grabbed hold of Valem's shoulder and pulled him back before working on the finishing himself.

'Is this some sort of joke! He makes me forge the blade by hand and then tells me he'll just TAKE OVER?!' Valem was steaming, but then realized that the finishing process's secrets were probably something that the blacksmith kept to himself, the crafters' way of preventing their craft's abuse... Smart little bastards they were; but since it was getting him a working katana, he couldn't well complain.... well he could, since he really wanted to make more swords of his own, but doing so would be pointless since it risked having no sword at all. Being greedy would not get him very far; a lesson he had bitterly learned from past experience.

Valem wanted so badly to take the blade and leave at this point but he knew he could not. He still had a lot of apprenticeship work to be complete and was not willing to let it wait. So while the blacksmith finished his blade, Valem began folding over molten steel to repair an armorset, he placed new support straps on a merchant wagon; and took several dull swords to the grindstone in order to hone and sharpen them to a fine point. The work was tedious and he lost focus on watching the blacksmith's work; knowing it would not be worth spying on his craft.

Via his stolen Sharingan, Valem could see a throbbing of power from within the unfinished katana. His heart was almost beating out of his chest with excitement, and there was still so much more to do. As ttihe blacksmith had suggested to him, Valem left the workshop to pick up a thick leathr cloth in order to wrap the blade. Once that was done, Valem found his katana sitting on the workbench, and so he sat down at the whetstone and began sharpening the blade. As he sharpened the blade, the air began filling with a strange energy. With every stroke against the sharpening stone the blade sang out. Every stroke which made the blade sharper and finer, so did it also make the blade’s song more and more powerful. Eventually it was almost compelling Valem to hum along with it. At this point there was no end to Valem's excitement at what lay waiting for him at the end of this long and tedious crafting process.

At last he held the finished blade. He channeled his chakra around his sword as it exploded into golden fire. His green and red eyes both reflected the golden flames before he sheathed the blade to extinguish them. A month of apprenticing was a small price to pay for a blade of this quality. His reforged sword was inscribed with the chrysanthumum, and entitled Kiku-ichimonji II - as the original had been melted down for its basest materials. Reforged and empowered, it would be the first of many swords in his intended arsenal.

A month ago, apprenticing under a blacksmith had seemed a small price to pay for the sword. Of course being unable to swing it or hold it again after that day one month ago was insurance that Valem would not run away. He could have attempted to picklock the display case of course, but it was the principle of the thing that he respected. He was not going to take what he wanted simply because he was now in employment of the land's law. A ninja would not stoop to the level of a common thug, so Valem would work, he would learn all he could from the work, and he would place his heart into the craft as if it had been his life.

From his own rudimentary works, he had been able to learn three things. Sharpening swords, cleaning the blood off of things, and how to intimidate people; the intimidating was a particularly useful talent as it had landed him the deal of apprenticeship in the first place. Valem also tended to act as a bouncer when not working in the forge, as few people would attempt to rob a sword shop with Valem glaring over them. However these rudimentary skills were for the art of war; and Valem had to learn to make more practical things; such as horseshoes, repair straps, reinforcements, and tools; all which were more commonly bought than weaponry.

His heavier build made him an asset for moving things for the blacksmith as well; hauling in carts, bracing a structure as supports were riveted to it. His strength had increased quite a deal from the work; something he had gadly accepted. The strength training would make him more effective on the field of combat; the tone of his muscles had never been better than they were now. He almost was going to miss it. Yes the work was hard labor, but knowing what might lie ahead, it was almost too tempting to just stay in the market village peacefully; but he knew he had to continue on his way to Hidden Sand.

That evening he was leaving, travelling at night while it was cool and sleeping during the day; and over the week he had been adjusting his sleep schedule accordingly. As he looked to the blacksmith he'd done apprentice work under, he bowed in respect, almsot apologizing for danging the man out the window, before dismissing it - both of them knew he had been in poor temper when the incident happened and both of them were past it. Instead, he handed Valem his sword in its sheathe and a large waterskin. With a nod and a silent thank you, Valem was gone; out into the desert following the setting sun towards his next destination. He had taken a month long pitstop for a sword, but with the price paid, he was ready to continue onwards with his training.

Michio had gone into a blind panic and hadn't even registered that Shinken had picked him up and had begun carrying him to the market when he was suddenly shaken to reality when he began to spill down the tall sand dune. As he reached the bottom, the blood that had wrapped around his limbs to keep him still had released it's hold and planted the ends of it's tendril-like shape on the ground, spreading out and cushioning his fall by becoming a pool that reached up and caught him, then lowered him into the pool to rest.

Michio didn't know what he was seeing, but something about the actions of the blood calmed his nerves. Shinken came scrambling back up the dune towards where he'd landed and he couldn't help but smile at his friend. “Shinken... as crazy as this is going to sound, I think this stuff was protecting me from the fall...”

He stood up and it was like the blood was solid ground. “I don't know what you are... but thank you?” The blood quivered as though it were sentient and could understand him and he shook his head. “This is just nuts...”

He stepped off of the blood pool and onto the sand, then held out the hand that had it's fingernails separated from the skin. As if it were commanded, the blood shot up from the sand it was resting on and pressed itself back into his body, traveling through the wounds on his fingers before closing the wound behind it.

He looked to his partner Shinken, then to the ground where the sand was still stained red. “What... in the actual.... ******** class="quote">

3 month time skip moving back to Village hidden in the sand.

The sun was hanging low in the sky by the time the two of them reached the market. They would have a limited amount of time to do any kind of shopping. Shinken knew Kazumi needed to rest so he took her to a restaurant where she could get some food and ice water.

“I have a few things to do in the market, but you can rest here. I’ll be back before the shops close.” He explained as he handed her a pouch of Ryo.

“Use this to get yourself something to eat and get some rest.” He said with a smile. She looked surprised but took the money without protest.

“Thank you...You’re very kind…” She said sheepishly. Shinken couldn’t be sure but he thought he saw a blush forming on her cheeks before she turned away and headed into the restaurant. Shinken didn’t have time to think about what that might mean at the moment so he quickly made his way toward the market.

He quickly found himself in a large crowd and had to push his way through to the ninja tools section. He knew that there had to be someone who would buy the items he had brought with him, but some of them were very specific in function. So he ended up spending nearly half an hour finding a merchant who was willing to purchase them. Eventually he came upon an old man who must have been in his late sixties. When Shinken showed him the Atium his eyes lit up with excitement.

“Oh...that’s a very rare metal. Very Valuable too. You say you wish to part with it?” The old man asked, doing his best to hide his interest.

“Yes both the sword and the shield as well as several other items, though they aren’t made of Atium. They belonged to a rogue ninja. I have them sealed in this scroll here.” Shinken said as he pulled the scroll from his bag. He showed it to the old man who looked it over with mild curiosity.

“Would you be interested in taking a look?” Shinken asked. The old man looked as if he was thinking it over for a moment before he responded.

“Well if they are of similar quality to the sword and shield I suppose taking a look couldn’t hurt.” He replied. Shinken nodded and bit his thumb drawing a rich red rivulet of blood which he then smeared across the unravelled scroll. There was a puff of smoke and Michio’s items appeared on the ground in front of him.

The old man quickly began examining the items. First he picked up the most unique of the items, the artificial eye. He turned it and examined it from different angles before placing it carefully on the counter of his shop.

“Had to be a pretty dedicated ninja to use this item. You think he removed his own eye, or do you think he was missing one already?” The old man asked. Shinken wasn’t sure if he was the one being addressed or if the old man was just talking to himself. Either way it was an uncomfortable question to answer, though Shinken had a feeling he knew the answer. It was Michio after all. He’d probably ripped out his own eye.

The old man then started to go through the rest of the items. He picked up the injection device and looked it over quizzically. It probably didn’t have much use to anyone who didn’t use their blood as a weapon and Shinken was pretty sure he wasn’t going to get anything for it, but then the man spoke.

“Hmmm so this device is used to inject chemicals into the user’s body huh? Well whoever was using it last was pretty strange. These chemicals would only change the PH balance of the user’s body. I don’t see how that could be useful...but if you put the right ingredients in here it could boost someone’s capabilities quite nicely. Not exactly the most conventional way to do it though. Most people use food pills or the like...though I could see this being more effective. You could deliver the chemicals faster, and at higher concentrations...I suppose I could find a use for it.” The old man mused as he put it beside the ocular implant. Shinken was surprised at how knowledgeable the old man was, but at least he was getting something for the item.

The armor and cloak were the last things the merchant looked over. He picked them up and tugged at the fabric. When he saw that it had some measure of stretch he grabbed a kunai and pressed it against the fabric. The weapon didn’t pierce the cloak or the armor. The old man nodded in appreciation.

“Pretty standard equipment. The materials are interesting though, and the craftsmanship is exquisite. I can’t think of anything that would seriously damage this cloak, and the armor would be very effective in protecting one’s vital areas… Yes I think I’m interested in all of your items. What was your name again?” The Old man asked. Shinken hadn’t given his name and he was pretty sure the old man knew that, but he didn’t see the harm in revealing who he was.

“Shinken Uchiha.” He replied. The old man seemed to grin a little when he heard the name.

“Uchiha huh? Then I’m sure you’re rather strong. If you find any more interesting items please bring them to my shop. I’m a merchant, but I also collect fine items like these. Speaking of collecting them I can offer you quite the payday for these. How does 28,000 Ryo sound?” The old man said eagerly. Shinken was floored at the amount the man was willing to offer so much without haggling.

“Uh..Yeah. That sounds like a deal to me.” He stuttered. The old man reached out his hand and Shinken took it in a firm handshake.

“Then I guess I owe you some money don’t I? It’s a good thing I have funds set aside for this kind of thing.” The old man said as he unlocked a compartment behind the counter and pulled out a large chest. He proceeded to diligently count out a total of 28,000 Ryo before sliding the money across the counter to Shinken. The Uchiha took the money and placed it in his wallet before giving the merchant an appreciative nod.

“I’ll be sure to come back if I find anything else interesting.” He said as he turned to leave. He was about to step through the door when the Merchant spoke up again.

“Oh I forgot to mention...if you need any more unique items yourself I have a plethora of contacts. I’m sure I could find you something to fit your needs, and if not I know a few craftsmen. I’m sure I could get you a good deal.” Just who was this old man? Shinken wondered if he was better off not knowing.

“Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.” He said before exiting the shop.

With his errands done and having now wasted almost an hour he decided it was time to return to Kazumi. He made his way through the dwindling crowd and back to the restaurant he had left her at. It didn’t take him long to find her. She was resting at one of the corner tables. She appeared to be sipping on a glass of ice water. He came up to her table and sat down across from her.

“So how are you feeling now?” He asked.

“Better.” She replied. She certainly looked a lot better than when he had found her.

“So did you get what you needed?” She asked.

“Yeah I did. I figure we can rest here until the sun goes down and travel back to the village at night while it’s not so hot out.” Shinken answered. She nodded in agreement with him.

“That sounds like a smart idea. It gives me another hour or two rest as well.” She replied.

“If we’re going to be waiting I suppose I should get some food. I haven’t eaten since this morning.” Shinken said as he stood up and went to the counter to order. The restaurant didn’t have a large selection of food so he settled for some chicken dumplings and a bowl of rice. He also ordered a pitcher of water before heading back to the table.

“So you’re a sand ninja too?” She asked. This was probably the best time to tell her about what had happened to Jin, but somehow Shinken still felt a little uneasy.

“Yeah. I’m the new Kazekage actually.” He stated calmly. Her eyes went wide when he said this and she nearly spat out her drink. After swallowing hard she looked him up and down. Was he joking? No he looked dead serious.

“What...what happened to Jin? Is the village ok?” She asked nervously. Shinken took a moment to think about his words before he answered.

“Well...Jin is dead. I challenged him for leadership. We fought, and I won.” He explained. That wasn’t exactly how it had happened. He had really come back to the village with the intent to kill Jin in the first place, and he’d done it on purpose but she didn’t need to know that. Not yet anyway.

“You...killed him then?” She asked, looking rather nervous.

“Yes... when I left the village to hunt down a rogue ninja he marked me as a missing ninja and exiled me from the village. He didn’t stop there though. He killed my family to punish me. I couldn’t let someone so cruel lead the village… So one day I came back. He wouldn’t step down so we fought and I killed him. I took over as Kazekage that day.” He did his best to try and make her understand why he had done what he did, but he wasn’t sure how she would react. Kazumi was silent for a long time before she spoke again.

“Well… he wasn’t the nicest person… and you seemed to have your reasons for what you did. You sound like you want the best for the village, and you did save me out there today…” She seemed to be thinking about something as she spoke.

“You were kind to me… and you don’t seem like a bad person…” She kept pausing as if she wasn’t sure how to word what she was going to say.

“What I’m trying to say is I’ll follow you… Lord Kazekage!” She stated as she bowed in respect. Shinken was quite surprised at her reaction. Granted he had saved her life but he hadn’t been expecting her to pledge her allegiance to him. There was an awkward silence filled with tension that was only broken when the food and water arrived at the table.

“Thank you Kazumi.” Shinken said feeling grateful but also a little awkward.

“Of course.” She said matter of factly as if she’d been his ally for ages.

“Well...These portions are bigger than I thought they would be. Have you eaten yet?” Shinken asked. She shook her head in response.

“No. I didn’t feel very well. My Stomach was upset from the heat.” She answered. Shinken nodded. That made sense. Heat exhaustion often made one nauseous.

“And how are you feeling now? Do you think you could eat?” In all honesty he could probably finish all of this food on his own, but it was polite to offer and he didn’t want to be completely stuffed on the way back to the village.

“I think I could eat a little.” She replied.

“Good then have some dumplings and some rice.” Shinken instructed. She bit her lower lip and nodded in agreement as Shinken made a plate for her. The two ate together and talked for another hour before Shinken paid for the meal and they left the restaurant. It was starting to get dark out so they headed out of the market and towards the oasis.
