User ImageCoeus stood in the clearing with the sun beaming down at her from a dramatic angle. Yes, it was hot, but it was at this time that she found the most pleasure playing with her often absent companion. Often absent and always silent.

Coeus was curious was her friend never made a sound. Why she never spoke or laughed. How did Coeus herself know that Skia was happy to see her, to play and pounce and roll in the dust before twilight and darkness called them away from each other.

Standing with her back to the sun, Coeus closed her eyes and waited, knowing that Skia would come and for sometime Coeus wouldn't be pressured. Wouldn't be lost in with her siblings. Despite all of the advantages. Why would she feel just as lonely when playtime with her visiting friend was over? Why couldn't she be satisfied with Skia? Why?

Perseus was chasing a small hopping bug around while her siblings were playing together. She had at some point noticed the oldest of their litter was not accounted for with the others, but she did not really think much of it. Coeus was often off on her own, and as long as Daddy was not worried, Perseus saw no reason to be worried either. Besides, there were hopping things to chase instead of worrying over her elder sister!

Perseus' prey was just within reach. All she had to do was aim and pounce just so. The cub tried to take aim and crouched down to prepare for the pounce. She really was not that good at this yet, but she was going to try her best anyway and hope that all her hard work would pay off one day. Practice for this was fun anyway, so it was not as if she was not going to enjoy the efforts she put forward.

With a great leap, Perseus landed next to the bug before it hopped away. She had managed to catch something, but this was her sister’s tail. Well, poor aim AND not paying attention to her surroundings. She was going to need more practice. She grinned to herself and looked up at her sister. “HELLO, COEUS!” She removed herself from the other’s tail and purred at her. “Want to play?”

Coeus sat down and watched Skia grow, concentrating on the growing shadow in front of her. Skia. Her most understanding companion. Her best friend. Or so Coeus thought. After all, Skia didn't ask uncomfortable questions or make unnecessary statements like others. But she didn't offer answers either. But Coeus felt she made up for it with the other qualities of friendship. And she enabled Coeus to be with a friend while being completely alone.

Well not completely. Perseus pounced on Coeus's fluffiless tail and a hopping bug escaped into the shades on the edges of the clearing. Perseus had a fluffiless tail too as did her other littermates. Not like their older siblings. They all had fluffy tuff at the end of their tails. Sometimes Coeus was very jealous of that. Other times, when she was stalking through the thorny and catchy bushes, Coeus was very happy she didn't have fluffy on the end of her tail, because it would hurt if it got stuck.

When Perseus released Coeus's tail, she tucked it close to her body. Her Skia and Perseus's shadow mate followed their movements. "Hello, Perseus. I was waiting for Skia. Who is that?" Coeus asked turning to her little sister, nodding at Perseus's shadow friend.

Perseus blinked in confusion at what her sister said. Who was Skia? Perseus had never heard of Skia before. Was it some stranger her sister had met and not told daddy about? That just did not seem like Coeus. Coeus hid from everybody after all, so to think of her meeting with some stranger just did not make sense. The young leopon was highly confused now. Something was not right with what her sister had said.

"You were waiting for Skia?" Perseus voiced her question boldly. "Who is Skia?" She looked down at where her sister had indicated when she asked who was with Perseus. Perseus saw nothing there. "Who is who? I do not see anyone." Her face showed just how confused and lost she was at the questions. She really had no idea what it was Coeus was asking her any more than she knew what her sister was talking about with that Skia person.

Coeus looked at her sister as if she were crazy. She looked pointedly at the shadow growing in lengths and strides across the ground to match Skia's growth. "Your shadow companion? You don't see your shadow companion?" Coeus lifted her paw and so did Skia. "Your shadow always follows you around and you don't even notice?" Coeus asked curiously.

Really was she the only one to take any note of them? Of their growth throughout the day? Their absence at night, unless Papa or an adult had fire with them? Or the moon was especially bright? She she really that odd?

Coeus tilted her head, "You don't like your shadow? Does it not keep you good company?"

Perseus looked down at her shadow again. "Yes, I see my shadow... but shadows are shadows. You cannot catch a shadow or play with a shadow." The leopon really did wonder about her sister. "Skia is your shadow? You named it?" It had never occurred to Perseus to name her shadow. It was just there, it was amusing for a while, until she realized she could not catch it. There were other things to chase that she had a chance at catching.

She shook her teal covered head and shrugged. "It is a shadow. It follows, but is not company like papa or you. I like it... for a shadow." Coeus must have found a better game to play with her shadow than Perseus had, it would seem. Though, the naming one's shadow thing would never make sense to Perseus, she also was not going to fault her sister for it. "You were waiting for your shadow to play with? Is it a fun game?"

Coeus and Skia tilted their heads. "But they keep all of your secrets, and they go through the same experiences in the Shadow World. And then they play a weird version of Simon Says. And when you laugh, they have a silent laugh that's even funnier because you can't hear it and makes you laugh all the more . . . "

By the look on her sisters face, that wasn't normal. Perseus definitely didn't play with her shadow. All well. "I like playing with Skia, but Skia likes playing with me. If you go up on your hind legs like this -" Coeus went up on her hind legs and took a menacing pose. Skia grew several feet long until she touched a few bushes. Animals and insects scurried out of the bushes or stood frozen in fear. "See, and then we pick what we want to pounce on and we pounce at the same time." Coeus pounced on a beetle of some kind. It squished under her. "And when I'm too lazy, but want to touch a tree or something, at this time, all I have to do is hold out my paw and Skia touches the tree for me, the tree and the shadow tree. And I can imagine the feeling of bark or shadow bark under my own paw." And she demonstrated yet again. She looked at her sister and tilted her head.

Perseus shook her head at her sister. "My shadow is not like that. Yours is just special, Coeurs." She nodded quite matter-of-factly at that. If her sister said it was so, perhaps it was. But Perseus knew her shadow was not like that. Her sister might be strange, but then again, she might not. "Maybe there are others with special shadows like Skia? I do not think any of our siblings or pappa have special shadows, though."

Perseus tilted her head to the side and watched her sister for a little bit. Her sister wanted to play with her shadow, then Perseus really did not have anything to play with Coeus. She had bugs to go chase while Coeus played with Skia. "If you are playing with Skia, then I let you... I was thinking of tag and bug hunting with you, but you and Skia are busy." She stretched and sighed. It was not going to be as much fun alone, but she didn't know how to play with a shadow.

Coeus watched her sister sulk as she started to walk away. But she had a shadow, so Coeus didn't understand. She was torn. She loved Perseus. But she loved Skia too. But Skia wasn't her sister. She was a friend. And Perseus was sulking. And as long as they didn't get all suffocating and and crowded, Coeus loved playing with her sister. In fact Perseus semed to understand when Coeus needed to be left alone and when she only wanted to be by herself. And she didn't really want to be by herself right now. Maybe that's why Perseus had found her way over to her. Perseus was talented like that. At least Coes thought so.

Coeus glanced at Skia, but if Skia was a real friend, she'd understand that Perseus was her sister and so came first. "What kind of bugs?" Coeus jumped up to follow Perseus.

Perseus looked back at her sister and stopped to let her catch up. "Wingy and hoppy bugs." She grins and points to a bug not too far away. "Like that one." She liked playing with her sister, and the fact that Coeus made the time to play with her made Perseus happy. She hoped that Coeus would enjoy playing with her as much as she did with Coeus.

The sisters were going to have a wonderful adventure, Perseus just knew it. And maybe Coeus would not miss playing with Skia? Perseus got to the bug pouncing with her sister and romped around the logs, rocks and grass trying to get more bugs than her sibling. She was determined to be the best possible at this game.
