Snarls, shredding claws, howls of pain and triumph. They all filled Dak's ears. He'd wandered too close to the compound, and now he was lost. He'd always just avoided this area and avoided the huge, bulky mokai that flocked here, but somehow he'd ended up blindly wandering the area. How did he get out of here?

He ducked behind any object large enough to conceal his form to avoid the fighters. What if they saw him? Were they as harsh as some of their hulking feral counterparts? He knew culls weren't really accepted by anyone, feral or pet, so he didn't want to find out. He dashed out from behind something that looked like it had once been a training dummy, now torn up and spilling cotton, and slid to a stop behind a crate. It smelled like old blood, sweat, and drool here, and it made him feel sick to his stomach. This wasn't a place he wanted to stay long.

He tried to make a break for a crude metal bathtub, but slipped on an old newspaper and went careening into it instead. He made contact with a loud metal clang and groaned. Owowowow.

Lately J.B. was keeping an eye on his ‘prized’ fighter. After the stunt she had pulled with the other male about running off, he did not want to have a repeat of that. She was kept to a long tether, enough to have her free to roam a bit of distance, but not enough to break free in a nice sprint, just like before. The striped female huffed. She deserved it, all she had to do now what gain his trust back, one way or another.

Golden eyes watched a series of fighters enter the compound, and then they would leave. She glanced over to her master, nose twitching as she lay on the ground. Being tied up sucked more than being injured.

A flash of movement caught her attention rather quickly, especially when the said creature happened to slip on an old newspaper. Spotting the raggedy red collar, Ai knew this was no feral. (She didn’t think they were that stupid to wander into the settlement in broad daylight). Her ears pinned back at the loud bang, turning her head to see if her owners had heard it too. Go figure they hadn’t, humans were so dense sometimes.

Wandering over, Ai peered at the fallen creature. A cull? What was it doing out here? Maybe this was one of the training culls that was used in the underground battles as bait?

“What are you doing here?”

!!!!!!!!

Dak squealed and whined, scrambling to get to his feet. It figured that such a loud noise would lead to his discovery. Not to mention a bit of a headache. The female was larger than he was, of course, but appeared to be tethered somehow. Why was she being tethered? His human never made him stay in one place.

He backed up slowly, tail between his legs and ears back. "I... I don't know." he admitted. He'd just been looking for food as usual, and he'd wandered one street too far, and suddenly he was lost. A stupid mistake. His heart pounded as he stared up at the female. "Please don't hurt me," he pleaded.

Why did culls always assume that others were in it to hurt them. Ai rolled her eyes as the others plead. “I’m not going to hurt you.” She scoffed, as if offended his words. In her mind, the compound was the only place for fighting (unless of course a certain fighter named Imnir came around. Then Ai would have a field day with him.) “Not like I could anyways, attached to this stupid thing,” she growled, trying to gnaw at the lead attached to her. It was one thing to be tied up when around her owner, going for walks or to the training sessions. But to just tie her up and let her be able to roam ever so much was torture.

“…Actually,” she thought for a moment, glancing back to her J.B.. He’d be pissed off at her for certain, but what else could he do in anger? Give her another potion to grow more scales? “I won’t hurt you, if you think you can get me out of this lead.” She glanced at the cull, flickering gazes between him and the human. “Deal?”

That was it? Free her, and he was free to go? His ear twitched, as if he wanted to perk them forward but was too afraid to. Breaking the tether meant getting within touching distance of her. He could run, but what if she broke free anyways? Or came to find him? And if he got her out of the lead, then maybe she'd be able to help him get out of here? Ugh. What to do.

He tip-toed closer, looking ready to bolt at the first sign of violence, and peered at her collar. "What's the other end hooked on to?" Maybe he could unhook that end easier.

Ai rolled her eyes at the scared look that plastered the cull’s face. Sometimes thoughts of what exactly these mokai went through floundered in her head. If only they acted more proudly, stood tall, and were not so skittish, would the world be more accepting of them.

Ai gestured to the tether attached to a silver ring stuck in the ground. “I wouldn’t try going that way though. See that human?” she nodded towards J.Boyd. “He hates your kind, as well as a lot of other humans that hang around these parts. If they see you, they might try to get you.”

He snorted at the human she mentioned. He'd heard stories of some humans treating his kind worse than the higher class Mokai. "Looks lazy to me. Why'd he tie you up, anyways?" He cautiously got closer and took the lead between his teeth, tugging at the ring from afar. That side definitely wasn't going to budge. It was too secure, and would make too much noise.

He moved to her neck to see what he could do from this end, but stopped at her shoulders. Scales? He just now noticed them. They were more shocking than her horn; in fact, he'd hardly paid her horn any mind. Lots of ferals had horns, so he'd seen them plenty before finding his human. "Why do your shoulders look like this?"

“Looks can be deceiving.” Although Dak was right. Her master was considerably lazy. He hadn’t come after her when she and Erebus took a run that one day, though he held all his grief or when she had returned. “I disobeyed him. I took off with another fighter a few days ago, and the punishment is now to be tethered up at all times, and to grow these sick appendages.” Whether getting the potions was a form of punishment, Ai didn’t know. They just happened to be given the night when she returned to the settlement.

As he tugged, Ai moved with him. She snorted, holding her place in case he tried again.

The striped female shrugged. “Humans do weird things. You have one, don’t you cull? I wouldn’t be surprised if one day yours decided to do something strange to you too.” The horn she could understand, but not the scales. They itched especially, and that distracted Ai.

His brows furrowed and he twitched his tail in agitation. "My name is notcull," he immediately narrowed in on the word, not even registering what she'd said about his human. "Just because I am one doesn't mean I respond to it," the smaller Mokai huffed. He looked a little bristled, but otherwise, he simply focused on his task. If he focused, they might part ways all the sooner, and he'd avoid fighters for the rest of his life.

It looked like the lead was attached to her collar with a metal clip. If he bit it and pulled it toward her head, he might be able to unhook it. Without warning, he took the clasp between his teeth and did just that, but he had trouble biting it and pulling at the right times. How did humans do this?

“Temper, temper.” Ai rolled her eyes, though she was very calm. She turned her head to see if the humans were still chatting, and sure enough, they were. Turning her attention back to the cull, she spoke quietly. “Well then, if I can’t address you as what you are, then why don’t you tell me a name to call you?” She asked, only holding a little bit of sarcasm in her voice.

“…Look you almost got it!” just as he pulled, so did she. With a slight ‘click’ the clip came loose. Hah! No tether could hold her down!

“Thanks. I owe you one.” Ai told him, sneaking past the cull, and under a bush nearby. “Oh, and I’m Ai.” She flashed a rare, but genuine smile towards the smaller creature.

"Muh nahm ish Dak," he replied around the hook in his mouth. Unforunately, talking resulted in his tongue touching the metal, and it didn't taste pleasant. Ew....

Click!

Oh, he'd done it! Wow. That had actually worked? Perhaps he had more going for him then he let himself believe. But wait, she was sneaking away! He didn't know his way out of here. What if he ran into another fighter? He scrambled after her, desperately.

"Wait, wait, Ai." How did he word this without sounding like a moron? "I... I don't know my way back home. I've never been here before. Ugh, that sounds stereotypical," he admitted, screwing his nose up unhappily. "I don't want to come across another fighter and loose my fur..." Not that is wasn't already thinning out with his poor diet.

“…What’s that?” She listened, still hiding under the bush. She didn’t want her master to look over and see that she was no longer tied up. At least the cull had made it look like someone had unleashed her, instead of ripping the tether in half. That would make the human blame another person, rather than the mokai.

“What is your home?” The female asked, her nose peeking out from the underbrush. She wanted to just say to go back the way he had come, but something in her mind told her that if he had crossed a different fighter, her might not be as lucky.

She eyed his thinning dark brown coat, shaking her head. “When was the last time you ate something decent?” She thought for a moment, before speaking again. “We should stop and get you something to eat on our way.” She was always taught that to be strong, you had to have a decent meal. Culls always had the short end of the stick when it came to that.

"I live in a little house near the fjords with my human." It was more of a shack, beat and battered by the elements, but it served well enough. It at least protected him some. It was better than nothing but the grass and the trees to call a home.

... ಥ__ಥ Foooood. Suddenly, he decided he might fall in love with this fighter. "Really? I'm so hungry..." his stomach rumbled at just the thought. "We don't eat very well... we sell all the fish we catch.." Wait, had he told her what they did? That probably didn't make sense without an occupation. "Because my human is a fisher!" he amended, with a slight flush. He was making a fool of himself.

“The fjords?” Sure she had been there a few times, not many though. Usually the pearl divers hung out there. Sometimes the master and his mistress would drag the young fighter for a walk down there, seeing as the female human loved the subspecies so much. “That’s not too far.”

Her ears perked forward at the rumbling in his stomach. “Stay here.” She ducked away from him, heading to the stables nearby. She knew where the feed was, it was just a point of sneaking past the humans to get it. Lucky for her, the battles were still going on, so the people she had to pass was bare minimum. Sneaking into a feed room, Ai spotted the familiar looking kibble in small bags already separated. J.B. was a stickler about not mixing feed with another, so he made sure to keep his stuff separately marked from any others.

Grabbing one of the small bags, Ai raced back to the bush with the prize in her maw. “Hurr” she said with a muffled voice, dropping the bag to his feet. “Eat it now, or later. It should be plenty filling for you.” The kibble was high in protein and fat, something a fighter needed. “Don’t say where you got it.” The mokai was becoming a little rebel, but she still loved her humans no matter what.

"We better hurry before he," he referring to her owner, "finds out I'm loose. Or else we both can be in a lot of trouble." Dak would be so more than she would, and frankly she wouldn't have that.

He waited as he was told, shifting paws and looking around nervously. Oh god. He hoped she hurried. Did her human know she was gone? Were there other fighters lurking around? Dak wanted to leave soon. He was relieved to see her return.

Kibble? "Oh wow." he took the bag from her, his tail twitching in his excitement. He'd never actually had kibble before, especially not the kind she would eat. It cost money neither he nor his owner had. He bet it tasted pretty delicious. " " 'hank yew," he replied with the bag in his jaws. His tummy rumbled anxiously, but he decided it was probably better to wait. It would take up too much time to eat now.

He nodded and motioned for her to lead the way.
