The Mystery of the Haunting Howls

Running Dates: October 23-October 27
(The times that clues will be posted will vary. Keep an eye on the event for when Rhia posts the next day's likely "start" time!)

Current Clues:
Clue #1: Brynja detected that the moaning sound was emanating more from the right tunnel of the fork than the left tunnel.
Clue #2: Kindra noticed that before one of the moans there was the sound of something scraping against the stone walls or floors, as if someone was dragging something heavy behind them.
Clue #3: Nyosh and Nyossk discovered the bodies of several dead tunnel snakes, who had obviously been in a recent and brutal battle. All of the dead tunnel snakes bore deep gashes/cuts on their bodies.
Clue #4: Dezima heard the same scraping sound as Kindra had earlier, only much louder and thus much closer than before. Whatever is making the sound sounds BIG, possibly a very large tunnel snake.
Clue #5: K'en discovered a bloody knife lying on the floor of the hallway. The blood was both human and tunnel snake.
Clue #6: K'en, his senses sharpened by the encounter with the knife, notices that the group has made it all the way to the front of the weyr. Whoever they're chasing is making for the main entrance, likely in an attempt to escape.
Clue #7: F'itz realizes that the scraping sound has stopped. It is no longer present before or after the moans.
Clue #8: Brynja discovers a dark, vaguely wet patch on the floor, one with a smear leading away from the party, down an adjoining hallway. The smear/patch is human blood and there's enough present to indicate that they should be concerned for the person's well being.
Clue #9: Dezima has a stroke of genius and convinces the group to stop. They discover that the moans, which had fallen silent as they moved, began again when the group stops moving. The moans are definitely trying to lead them to something.
Clue #10: K'en runs his hand into a sticky, green smear streaked along the wall of the hallway.

Once again, the...

Rules
1. You are welcome to enter one character per weyr. This means you can participate in all three mysteries if you'd like, but with only one character in each. (I.E. Don't have your character's best friend show up half-way through the mystery just to hang out. Staff members may insert one of their characters for plot purposes, but that's for the good of the event and they will not be counted as participating members. Just plot devices.)
2. Play nicely and keep the drama to a minimum! If you have an issue with someone, take it to PMs.
3. You are welcome to refuse any prize you win if you think something you like more might come up in another game. HOWEVER, if you do refuse, the staff cannot promise you will win another prize. (It's up to chance, after all!) If you refuse a prize, the prize will go on to the next eligible person. We will not fight with you over your choice or be responsible for replacing a prize you have refused if you change your mind later on.
4. You may only win ONE prize from this event. If you win one of the grand mystery prizes, you may not win one of the firelizards or either of the other mystery prizes. The mystery prize of the other events will go to other participants. Winning a prize in the events does not exclude you from winning any prizes from the games.
5. Please be aware that these mysteries are occurring at the weyrs. This means that if you have a character living at the Harper Hall, they will not be able to participate unless you have a good reason for them to be hanging out at the weyr during the mystery.

Now for the expanded explanation of how this event is going to work.

This will be an in-character roleplaying event taking place shortly after the recent murder of Benden's Weyrwoman, Kestril. Periodically, within the set event times of that day, the staff member running the event will prompt the players to roll a d100 in an attempt to match or get as close to the staff member's roll as possible. This roll indicates which character gets to discover the next clue of the mystery! The person who is the closest to the staffer's number wins the point and their character will discover the clue in the staff member's next post. (PLEASE NOTE: After the rolls are complete, the staffer will make another post, this one with the clue and the character who discovered it. In the event of a tie between two characters, both characters will discover the clue and receive a point. Do not see that you are the closest and have your character go "LOOK! A CLUE!" when you aren't event sure what it is yet. Hahaha.) There will be about 2-3 clues posted a day. Staff members will try to wait to give as many people a chance to roll as possible, but we do have to keep the event going and get those 2-3 clues in, so if you are absent for the day, you will miss the roll. Don't worry, though. There are always other days if you miss a clue or two!

The majority of the event, of course, will be roleplay between the participating characters as they work through the clues and try to solve the mystery. This is a chance for your characters to have some fun and get some interaction with their fellows, after all! Clues will be posted at the discretion of the staffer. This means that after you all have had a chance to get in an intro post or a response to the latest clue and your characters get the chance to chat somewhat, another clue may be posted. (Think Hatchings.)

At the end of the clues (and the event), your characters will finally solve the mystery and put their suspicions to rest. The final tallying of points will occur and the winner of the grand prize will be announced. Those players who participated actively in the event (and did not win the grand prize) will be put in a raffle to win two Halloween-themed firelizards colored by the very talented staff member running your event. So, even if it looks like you're not doing well in the points realm, don't give up hope! There's still a chance for you to win something too!

2. Brynja
3. Dinah
4. Kindra

It had been several weeks since the memorial service for Kestril. The weyr had adjusted to the loss of their weyrwoman as they watched the fruits of Yirath's last brood learning and growing. The presence of the twin Golds likely helped ease some of the loss for those concerned for the weyr as well.

The were coming to the cold months, now. The chill in the air and the turning colors of the leaves spoke of autumn being well underway. A time when small children sometimes imagined they saw things in the dark and heard tunnelsnakes under their beds.

The surprise, of course, was the night Benden ended up with a monster story of its own.

With the moon half-full and the skies partially hidden by clouds, the weyr was dark except for the glows that periodically lit the hallways. Most of the weyr was sleeping, but for those with night duties, but some of those sleepers were about to be disturbed.

A low moan floated through the halls of Benden Weyr, echoing off of the stone walls and into sleeping caverns. Being the wee hours of the morning, most people were so soundly asleep that they were unaware of the eerie sound permeating the air, but those few who were awake or tended to be light sleepers would hear it, the sound permeating into their bones and send shivers down their spines. The moan sounded again, louder, the pitch rising and falling and finally fading out.

So soon after the murder of Weyrwoman Kestril, such a sound could only be a bad omen.

Kindra, as usual, was sleeping lightly, both in case Suunath woke and ever since she Impressed the Gold, Kinda had been a lot more concerned about her wellbeing, being a Goldrider, one who rode one of TWIN Golds from Yirath's clutch. If someone was willing to murder a Weyrwoman, they would probably be more than willing to murder a weyrling goldrider who had many other distractions going on. The low eerie moan woke her instantly, her hand whipping under her pillow to the knife she kept there, 'borrowed' from the kitchens. She looked over to Suunath who stirred and woke almost a split second after Kindra had.

"Mine, what was that noise? was it a Wher?" asked the gold, fuzzy from sleep and not quite herself, the growing gold shook her head and sniffed the air, not scenting anything strange. "Go back to sleep Mine, no point in chasing sounds around at night, that's what the whers are for" she said grumpily.

Kindra sighed and rubbed her dragon's eye ridges until Suunath's eyes began to droop, Kindra hummed a little song she used to sing for her bay brother. "Just go back to sleep Suunath, i'm going to go take a look, i'll take the knife and be on my guard" she said as the gold drifted back off to sleep, Kindra waited until she was sure the Gold was sound asleep before putting a thick robe around her and putting some soft sandals on. She tied the robe closed and ran a brush through her hair quick, it crackled with static since she's washed it the night before. Grabbing a spare glow she turned it so it shone out, not that she really needed it but it might temporarily distract someone nearby.

She entertained the thought of waking the other Goldrider but thought better of it, there would surely be other weyrlings awake, either feeding their dragons or some other thing keeping them up at this hour. She hid her hand (and the knife) in the deep pocket of her robe, she didn't know what it was made from but it sure kept her warm on the cold Benden nights. She moved the glow in front of her and began to look through the halls, if it was someone playing a prank ... well.. it wouldn't be pretty if Kindra caught them.

Things had been going pretty good, in her opinion, since the Hatching and funeral had passed. Each day she was learning more and more what it meant to have a lifemate like Microth. Dezima loved the little green very much and found that her knack for exploring was just as strong as her own. The two of them had wandered around the barracks a few times now, learning where each of their fellow werylings were located and who was paired up with who - just in case she ever needed to find one of them.

As for her own flatmate, Dezima was quite happy with Brynja and Larth. The blue was always an amusing dragon to interact with. And Microth enjoyed his company, which was the most important thing. And Dezima herself enjoyed Brynja's company. A good match up for flatmates indeed, or so she felt anyways. Dezima hoped that Brynja and Larth felt the same.

When the first low moan floated through the halls, Dezima didn't stir very much. Microth became more aware of her surroundings but neither of them fully woke. It was her flitter, Mal, that woke them when the second, louder moan drifted through the halls. Mal did not like this. No no no. What was that sound? Her person needed to hear this sound. WHAT WAS IT?! The green flit squawked and dove to bury herself under her-Dezi's chin. The frightened squawk combined with the equally frightened emotions woke Dezima up just in time to hear the rising pitch of the moan.

Startled, Dezima sat up trying to discern if she was still half asleep or really had just heard that sound. Mal protested....loudly...and scampered down her shirt to curl against her stomach. By this point, Microth was awake and alert, head raising from her wallow with wide eyes.

Dezimine? What is that sound! I do not like it. It's annoying. The green sat up moving out of her wallow to sit next to her bonded's bed. Microth was silent for a few minutes while Dezima moved out of her bed and stroked the green hide. Can we go see what it is? She finally asked.

"Well...I definitely want to know what the shards is making it." Dezima yawned and quickly pulled on something warmer since she wasn't buried under bedfurs now. "Gonna be careful though. I don't like it either. Something...creepy about it." Warm, long sleeved shirt now pulled over her head, Dezima and Microth started to step out to go explore. It didn't take them very long to find another that was up and most likely wondering what the shards that sound had been. It was one of the goldriders.

"Kindra!" Dezima called out softly. "Do you know what that sound was?" She asked as the greenrider pair hurried over to join the goldrider.

((I will be gone for most of the afternoon so feel free to just drag them along or go about exploring without them!))

Dinah wasn't sleeping - the new wherhandler had already been up and about for some time, working with her young charge. There was much training still to be done, work to try to shape the green into a potential watchwher, but not in the cruel way a few unscrupulous trainers might use...although that might have been easier. She was having some difficulty getting Dinahsk not to want to be friends with everyone, much less be aggressive when necessary.

As they walked the halls, the little wher's claws clicked on the stone, but that sound was soon joined by one that didn't belong: an eerie, human-like moaning, rising and falling and then fading away. The partners stopped in their tracks, Dinahsk freezing for a moment before tilting her head and shuffling her bright-toed feet in brief uncertainty. Person? She could hear it, but she couldn't see anyone!

Dinah rubbed one of her bonded's headknobs, looking in all directions. They should investigate, but where had the noise come from? Person! the wher interrupted her deliberations, spinning in the direction of more substantial voices. The brunette frowned, stilling Dinahsk with a hand and a sound. Were those Weyrlings? "Shouldn't you be abed?"

Kindra turned at the sound of someone behind her "Shards Dezima... don't do that" she said, glaring, knife half pulled from her pocket before she'd heard the girl speak, how she hadn't heard the dragon she didn't know but she hadn't "keep it down, Suunath is asleep.... would i be out here if i knew what the sharding noise was?" she snapped, her nerves on edge lately anyway, without obvious questions being asked.

She heard another noise and pulled the knife all the way out of her pocket, turning it towards where the noise was coming from, glow shining brightly forwards to shed light on whoever was sneaking around. She sighed in relief at seeing the wherhandler, she couldn't recall the name of the pair but she did turn the glow away so it wasn't so bright for her creature "Couldn't sleep with that sharding noise, i swear if it's someone playing a joke... i'm going to use this knife" she said, voice low and VERY annoyed, both at these people questioning her and the lack of sleep.

There was another pair that had not been sleeping that night. Nyosh had dressed herself warmly for the cold, cold night. Perhaps Nyossk wasn't at all bothered by the cold winter nights at Benden, but she certainly was. Privately Nyosh felt it was chillier out in the bowl than inside the tunnels. The bowl was open to all sorts of winds, rain, and snow. On the up side though, she could see the stars on clear nights.

The weyr had had a feeling a calm contentment, or so she thought, after the twin gold hatching and the Weyrwoman's wake. It had been quiet. No sign of the crazy, old man, and importantly no deaths. Nyosh looked down as her wher crooned remorsefully. There was no male whers around. She reached out a gloved hand and lightly patted her shoulder. "The others are out doing their rounds too sweety. I'm sure you'll see them later." Particularly........

She didn't get to finish that thought as a rising moan floated out from the tunnels out to the weyr bowl. Together the pair turned to identify the source of the sound. All thought of flirting gone from their poses as duty to the weyr called. Nyosh knew nothing inside the weyr should be making that kind of sound.
Nyossk knew her duty. She started to pace forward across the desolate bowl. It had come from the round holes where they walked. She was not afraid and would find the source.

Nyosh followed a step behind her green wher. Could one of the candidates or new riders be making that sound? She wasn't sure a human could produce a sound like that. Whers didn't either. Though it could be a human at a tunnel opening. It could distort the sound. They made their way cross the bowl and to the tunnels. Though the moan had died away, she and Nyossk could hear normal human voices. The green wher also signaled that another wher was with them. Was one of them the source of the sound?

((I'd like to move this along a little, so I'm going to introduce one of my characters to help for now. I will also ask everyone to please roll one d100 with their next post. Depending on how many replies I receive, I'll announce the winner in an hour. If it looks like only two or three people have rolled, I'll wait a little longer, but I do want to get through at least two clues today. ;3))

The faint light of a glow lightened the hall behind them, and a moment or two later N'mol rounded the corner, an uncovered glow basket in his hand. He took in the two Weyrlings and what appeared to be a wherhandler and her wher. He held his basket a little closer, the light merging with the light from Kindra's basket, turning their lengthened shadows into streaks on the floor.

"Ladies," N'mol greeted. He'd left Tyeth back at their bunk, but the Bronze was awake and on high alert after the moan woke the Bronze, who in turn woke his rider to investigate. According to Tyeth, as a Bronzeriding pair it was their duty to help keep the weyr safe. If this moan was someone in trouble, then it would look best if they were the ones to help.

"I'm going to guess that whatever made that noise isn't here, unless it was your wher." He nodded to Dinah respectfully, and then to the Green at her side. "If you're also looking for the source, it might be best to stick together. If it's some kind of distraction for another attack on the riders, or our two new Goldriders," he nodded at Kindra as he looked between the three of them, "Then we'll have a better chance with larger numbers." He met Kindra's eyes, and then smiled charmingly. "Of course, it would be foolish to let one of our Goldriders go out without all the protection we could afford her, even if you are armed. Then again, I can't imagine the Weyrling Master, or our Weyrleader, being pleased that any of us would put our lifepartners at risk without us being sure to minimize the risks of us getting hurt."

I am sure that we will not be punished for being out of bed, so long as we're doing it to protect the weyr and its riders, Tyeth assured his rider. It is our duty, after all. Besides, Suunath's rider is there.

Tyeth didn't even have to expound on that for N'mol to understand his insinuations. Kindra's presence made this a more than worthwhile endeavor, because it meant meeting a future Weyrwoman face to face and establishing a good rapport with her early on.

He listened to Tyeth as he paused to let that sink in, and to wait for response from the girls, before the smile widened and he nodded. "Let's go then. The sooner we find the source, the sooner we can all be safely back to bed."

Well well, maybe the night wasn't so bad, there was one of the bronzeriders now, from the clutch she'd got Suunath from no less, she didn't see his Dragon but she didn't need to, she'd made a point of noticing the Bronzeriders more than other colors, simply because they would be the ones she would have to get along with most. She smiled equally charmingly back at N'mol "N'mol, glad to see you, at last, someone not asking stupid questions" she said "I would never put Suunath at risk, that's why SHE is back in our Weyr, and why i .. *cough* borrowed this knife, it's rather sharp you know" she said, a strange inflection in her voice, without Suunath to disapprove she could flirt as much as she liked. "I'm so glad it's not just us women here, i feel so much safer now" she said, putting the knife away and moving close to N'mol, sliding a hand under his arm and holding it there, fixing him with a 'sweet' smile.

Nyosh managed to reach the group as another rider, bronze apparently, addressed the trio of girls. She tapped her lip sizing them up. Bronzerider, young goldrider, young greenrider, and a junior wherhandler pair. For a moment she almost left them. The wherhandler pair was about the only ones she could tolerate. Unfortunately, Nyossk decided for her. The green wher pushed right into the middle of the group. Attention! she cooed at them. Particularly N'mol. This was much better than being alone. She chirped a greeting to the young green wher.

Nyosh bit back a sigh and moved into the light. Why did it have to be dragonriders? "From what I overheard, none of you made that noise. That's good I guess." She looked at the goldrider and the knife. "It wont do you any good in your pocket. Personally I don't think you should join us. Your dragon might be safe, but if something were to happen to you....." She left the sentence hanging and arched her brow. Kestril had also been alone in the tunnels when she'd been murdered. Nyosh hoped she could scare the girl back to her bed.

At least the girl was considerate enough to turn away her glow - it earned her one tiny point in the wherhandler's book, but she was of mixed feelings about the knife. It was understandable, on one hand, but on the other...before she could follow that trail of thought further, though, another sharding Weyrling showed up!

"No, it wasn't Dinahsk," she answered shortly. Since when did whers make noises like that? What she did do, though, was trill amiably at the gathering young riders, much to her handler's dismay. The young woman made a disapproving noise before returning to the issue at hand.

"Whoa, hey, hold up," Dinah objected, frowning at the teenage boy. Ten to one he was a bronzerider, the way he was trying to be in charge, but he did have one very good point. "I don't think the Weyrlingmaster or the Weyrleader would want you lot chasing noises in the dark, especially you." She indicated the goldrider with a jerk of her head...the goldrider who was now flirting with who had to be a bronzerider. Ugh.

Dinahsk raised her head, looking away from the group and clicking. Person! Wher! She would have scampered in their direction, but Dinah wrapped her hand around the wher's headknob, discouraging any enthusiastic greetings. Focus, there were things to do - although she was glad there was another wherhandler here now, and nodded in greeting. And she was thinking along the very same lines, good.

"You should go back to your barracks and leave this to the grown-ups." She didn't want to babysit little dragonriders, nor get in trouble for allowing them to endanger themselves.

Kindra drew herself up at the tone in the wherhandler's voice "I'll have you know, that as one of your possible future Weyrwomen, it's my duty to investigate any strange behaviour in the weyr and bring it to the attention of our Weyrleaders" she said hotly, "Whoever murdered Kestril waited until she was alone, and WE" she gestured to all that had gathered in that spot "are most certainly not alone, we stick together and we have enough eyes to keep on the lookout for threats." she snapped. "Why don't you head out in front, or better yet, take your wher, with her excellent abilities to sense things before we can, along another route and find the source of the noise, i'm sure your green is more than capable" she added, a little less frostily, the Wherhandler made her feel like a small child, and she hated feeling inferior, esepcially when she was a Goldrider now, and the older woman was 'just' a wherhandler. She bit back a nasty comment, not wanting to get in an actual arguement with the wherhandler, no matter how tempted she was to point out whers had been SUCH a big help in saving Kestril from being murdered.

"Dezima?" Brynja hadn't been woken up by the moaning - more by the fact that there'd been a flitter squawking and then the low murmur of Dezima's voice. She'd rolled over in bed, tried to plug her ears, but now she was unstoppably awake - followed quickly by Larth. The blue slept fairly soundly most of the time, but when Brynja (finally, giving up on going back to sleep) sat up and realised that Dezima and Microth were gone, he woke with a start.

Clearly, there was some sort of mischief afoot... and, worse, mischief that they were not there for! That would never do. Though the night be e'er so cold, the pair were definitely, definitely on the case.

Pausing only to sling her jacket around her shoulders, Brynja and Larth trotted from the room in search of their room-mates. The big blue walked slightly ahead of his rider, neither entirely comfortable with walking around the weyr at night, what with... well, what with everything (although Larth was cheerfully assuring Brynja that he, being the largest, strongest, and best of his clutchmates, would prevent any harm from coming to her).

They rounded the corner as Kindra snapped, Brynja blinking in surprise - though she missed what the gold rider was saying. Oh! Had she missed a memo? Was this some sort of secret gathering? WERE THERE GOING TO BE MIDNIGHT FEASTS?! ...had she not been invited? Was it a weyrbrat only thing? Oh, that was not on. That was not on at all.

"Hi guys!" she said cheerfully, with a wave to Dezima, who had clearly slipped away without her to this midnight gathering, something she meant to have words with her new friend about. "What's going on?"

Nyosh tilted her head at the goldrider. So arrogant as usual. "Possible future weyrwoman. You wont have a chance should you come to serious harm tonight. Besides, you're not the Weyrwoman yet goldrider." She looked around at the others. Then entered another weyrling. Ugh, what was it with them getting out of bed! Nyosh gave a cold smile to Kindra. "Well then, since you seem so well protected perhaps I will check other tunnels. I do hope you don't drive them away with that nasty temper of yours. Good luck on your search." She gave a look around, then nodded to Dinah. If she wanted to stay with them that was her choice. Nyosh wondered just how well their glows would help them see this night. Nyossk was so much better for night hunts than stupid glows.

Nyosh gave her wher a gentle nudge to head down the nearest tunnel. If anything, at least other gold rider still had sense in her head so Benden would have at least one gold.
Nyossk gave a sad call to the group before responding to her handler and heading down the tunnel. Once out of sight she turned her attention to looking for the sound.
