About: Nanami definitely was one of the more fortunate ones as far as childhoods go. She was born to a young college student and her soldier husband. The two, although intelligent and madly in love, just didn't have the resources to raise a baby. With Nanami's father overseas most of the time and her mother trying to make it into medical school, a baby was the last thing they needed. Although their religious beliefs prevented them from aborting the infant in the first place, they were both smart and mature enough to arrange to have the baby adopted the moment it was born.

Nanami was only moments old when she was passed from her birth mother to her adopted mother. Her parents were smart, capable, and had already secured themselves a stable lifestyle. They lived out on Nirvani, owned a successful business, and prided themselves as being one of the upper class families of the island. Nanami had practically everything she could need, as did her brother, Yuuto, who was adopted a few years later. Nanami was raised to be a polite, quiet, little doll of a girl, which she was for a good amount of time. She did her homework, she was polite and quiet around adults, and she never argued or got into fights. She did what her parents told her, and for a while she was happy like that.

The summer she was thirteen she met Nate, a fourteen year old boy in town visiting family. She hadn't met many people from off the island before, and he was drawn by her sweet, feminine appearance. It was a summer of firsts. The two were infatuated with each other, and every moment they had free, they would spend together. Unfortunately, Nanami's mother, disillusioned by her mild-mannered daughter, never bothered to explain birth control to the girl, so when one thing led to the other and Nanami lost her virginity, it resulted in a pregnancy. However, by the time she discovered this, Nate had returned to the mainland. Her parents were shocked to find that their little girl was pregnant, and deeply humiliated. They had a reputation to maintain, of course. They urged their daughter to get rid of it, but by this point Nanami was hitting her rebellious streak, and she resisted. She acted out as long as she could, just to spite them. That was the last straw for her parents. They were too embarrassed to face their friends and coworkers, so they sold their business, gave Nanami the money, and left.

That spring, she gave birth to her daughter, Haruka. It was a rough few years as Nanami juggled school, working, and caring for a baby. She just barely graduated, and quickly fell into the workforce. She was determined to be independent by all means possible.

When she was twenty, her brother graduated from high school, and she went to visit him. It was during this trip to the States that she discovered tattooing. She fell in love with it immediately, and set about right away to get her license and to perfect her craft. When she returned, she rented out a friend's sun room and opened her own tattoo parlor. She had been practically adopted into this family as a teenager, and so when the family decided to move back to the mainland to be closer to family, they sold the house to Nanami at a much cheaper price. Her life fell together when she was twenty-five. She was a business owner, she owned her own home, and Haruka, at that point eleven years old, was healthy and happy. Only once did she ever contact Nate. Once she felt mature and stable enough, she sent him a letter with a photo of Haruka. She got a reply, but she hasn't opened the letter yet. Although she prefers to downsize her past to nothing but a slight inconvenience, she's still afraid of repeating her parents' reaction, so she keeps the sealed envelope in her dresser drawer.

The past decade has featured some of the best years of her life. Despite a mild midlife crisis and some confidence issues when Haruka began to grow independent, Nanami enjoyed her thirties immensely, finding a nice balance between work, her relationship with her daughter, and her friendships, Hayden and Gemma especially. She even tried to reconnect with her parents, and although they still don't get along, her father's death has forced her and her mother to be civil. She also enjoyed a short relationship with Hayden, but unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be, and the two separated amicably, and she returned to being single.

However, the past few years have proven to be a bit of challenge. Haruka moved out, leaving her all alone for the first time in her life, and she had to adjust to having a truly empty nest. In addition, she's been suffering from some health troubles recently, which have not only reminded her of her increasing age but also that she won't be able to run her business forever. But overall, she has remained quite positive compared to past "crises".

████████ ████████ ████████ ████████ ████████ My Storyxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

About: Haruka's world can be summed up into one word: Nanami. She claims to have no real memories earlier than age six, but if she had, it would surely be almost entirely about her mother. It was just the two of them for so long, she forgets that other people have fathers and grandparents and siblings and extended family. To her, Nanami filled all of these roles. Despite having a single, teenage mother for some of the most crucial years, Haruka had a happy and healthy childhood. She never went hungry, and every day was filled with art and laughter. Up until she was eleven or so, they ate mostly fast food and take-out. Haruka, growing increasingly aware of appearances and fashion, hated this and so she taught herself to cook. She ended up cooking all of the meals in the Koyama household, and ultimately, most of the other chores as well, which became a bit of an issue when she started to work.

Haruka grew up idolizing her mother. The two are almost more like best friends than mother and child. Because she admires her mother so much, she has always tried to emulate her role model. Armed with a fierce personality and a stubborn independent streak, she found that she didn't have to try very hard to be like her mother; in fact, she had inherited many of Nanami's traits. She's very focused on her own likes and interests to the point where she'll forget about everything else. She's grown to be very mature, not only because she takes care of most of the chores around the house, but because she looks older than she is, and has always been treated as an adult. She's incredibly fashion-conscious, using what little time she's not spending in school or cooking meals to work on her appearance. She has a casual, matter-of-fact way of speaking that she struggles to control; it often comes off as rude, and she almost always regrets later. She's the type to act like nothing bothers her (mostly because she doesn't notice), then realize later on with violent embarrassment.

Her high school days were uneventful at best, as she focused most of her time and energy into her appearance, her fashion, and getting a job at the salon. Once she had gotten her dream job, it was natural that a boyfriend would come next. She had had boyfriends before, in her early teens, but of course, none of them lasted long and she doesn't regard them as particularly important. She had, however, developed a bit of a crush on her mother's receptionist when she was in high school (of course, her being sixteen meant that it was largely suppressed) and it only grew once she had graduated and was comfortable enough to consider him a friend. After number of uncomfortable encounters, misunderstandings, and enough awkwardness to last a lifetime, she settled into a relationship with Raiden, which still continues after ten years -- though, much to her grandmother's dismay, marriage isn't really a priority.

Haruka's twenties were successful in many regards, most importantly her reconnection with her estranged grandparents. Even with her uncle there as a buffer, it was awkward at best, but she and her grandmother (and her grandfather, before his death) stay in touch regularly, and she'll sometimes go to visit. She also met her father when she was twenty-four, though that was much more of a disaster, and if not for the closure it provided, she probably would have regretted it.

Despite being incredibly close to her mother as a teenager, Haruka has found herself growing a little more distant with age. She moved out of the only home she ever knew to move in with her boyfriend, Raiden, and although she sees her mother daily, she is more independent than she was before, much to Nanami's disappointment.
