He was never going back… not alive anyway.

Rylis spent his every waking moment learning survival in the wild. The skills he learned as a fighter proved useful in some aspects but there was so much still he had to learn and re-learn. Food wasn’t given to him, nor was it denied from him. Whether or not he ate was completely dependant on him; his speed, his endurance, and his cunning. The first few weeks had been a living hell, second only to the hell he endured as a younger pup. He had learned how to track pray based on scent, how to keep himself silent, how to move only when the wind did, how to keep himself downwind, and how to hide his scraps so other predators couldn’t find them.

He had quickly learned the difference between a good shelter and a bad one, the difference between good drinking water, and stagnant, bug-infested water. He learned to keep off the roads and well away from the coastline where the humans would travel and work alongside their pearl-diving companions. He had grown since then. The short clipped fur had become wild and long, forming a thick protective mane along his back, neck, and crown. His lean, sleek form had put on some muscle. He was a true feral.

He’d made a den out of a cave nestled along a small cliff wall just alongside a punchbowl fed by a series of waterfalls. It was large enough for several full grown mokai but it sufficed just fine. He had fresh water, a dry, warm place to sleep, and a steady supply of prey nearby. The humans rarely ventured out this far, and aside from other mokai- he had no competition to worry about.

Soon he would begin his trips back into the city. As soon as his body was fit and his mind cleared, he would seek out others like him, leading them into the wild where they belonged, and teaching them how to survive.

That morning, he woke with a grunt and ventured to the front of his den for a short stretch. After a few mouthfuls of water and a good shake-out, Rylis began downstream, his pace brisk but easy. He’d eaten just the night before, so he had the entire day to himself.

She was pacing, and looking to the sky where the sun had settled. She felt like she was taking too long. Too long to get settled, which she hadn't yet, and too long to go back for him. She needed to get him out, soon. Flicking her ears she grit her fangs together, rubbing them methodically for a moment before making her way to a nearby stream.

Reisx knew this area was safe, but was keen to know that other Mokai could be around, and that upstream she had caught another's scent, which meant she was close, potentially dangerously close to another Mokai's territory.

She hated the idea of going back, hated the idea that perhaps she might see him, the beast of a two-legger that had dared call himself her master, had caged her in such confines she couldn't move unless he brought her out to fight, or train. His version of training was a hard stick and his hand.

But to go back, she needed help, a plan, she didn't get to know the city too well as her master had not allowed her outside often.

But she needed to go back, within a few days time, or the guilt in her heart would start to eat away at her once more.

Rylis froze as he came across a foreign scent, a mokai? A stranger... perhaps an intruder. He wouldn't put it past the elders to come out this far sniffing about for deserters and trouble-makers. No doubt there were at least a handful who had found their way well enough through the wilds in the past.

Airing on the side of caution, Rylis remained downwind to the female and stalked in closer, his ears flat against his mantle and his paws gentle against the shifting ground beneath him. He came to a boulder and slowly inched his way up onto its surface, his belly nearly dragging as he prowled to peek over the top.

A female... dark in coat with a large set of horns rolling out of a proud mantle. He swallowed a small bit of envy thinking of his own horns- small and idle. Shaking out of his thoughts, he watched her for a time. Pacing, no real goal in mind, but irritated. She was alone... her scent was the only fresh one in the area- and she didn't seem to be expecting anyone.

Rising up, Rylis filled his chest and rolled his shoulders back. "You there. What's your business in this territory?"

When she heard his voice she did not turn suddenly, she tried to show no fear, no worries, she glanced over her shoulder as she stood still, silver eyes falling on his, his brown form noticeable against the vegetation that surrounded them. He didn't seem a threat, he appeared, wild, feral, as she. A great mane was upon his head, horns, and a look of determination in his eyes.

"I've just nearly been free for a short while," she spoke, "another, he helped me. But, I have to go back, I need to go get him-" she stopped, turning to face him fully. "He helped me escape, but was captured in doing so. So I've come to think, if that's all right."

The defensive stance softened slightly as a thoughtful expression crossed his features. Suspicion was replaced by curiosity. So she was another run-away? If he'd heard correctly, she'd had assistance in breaking free from the masters and had somehow find her way here. How ironic...

"You have someone back with the humans?" He raised a brow and turned a thoughtful look towards the direction of the colony. He'd made a few trips back in that direction- originally to help himself to the garbage that the humans carelessly tossed aside. There were a few more times that he'd returned to the inner town itself to scout for others like himself. He'd recently freed a pet from her own life behind bars.

Smirking, he glanced back at the stranger. "Perhaps you'd like some company. Whomever this is- it sounds like he deserves his freedom."

"I do," she spoke to his words, and she watched his posture relax. She didn't mean to intrude on his territory, if that is what this area was, but she needed a quiet place to think, far enough away from the settlement to not hear anything from there. Not hear his howl if he called just yet...she had needed time to heal from the physical wounds of her old master. "It has just taken me...some time, to heal, he hurt me," she said softly, looking away. She was ashamed she couldn't stop him, but she had been placed in a cage too small for her body, barely able to turn herself.

"I want to get him, show him I'm willing to do what it takes, as he did for me, but I don't know how to get back in. There was a fence, but I don't think I can make a big enough opening by myself."

She stopped for a moment, looked at her paws, silver eyes shining, "He deserves everything."
