ashes to the wind

A brisk wind stirred under a shady tree on the grounds of Tidal Heights. A mess of blond hair swirled in it's small fury. That was enough to wake the boy under that tree, his hair ticking his face. With a loud yawn, he straightened up into the afternoon light. His book slid from his face onto his lap. "So much for finishing my homework." He laughed, brushing the wrinkles from his uniform and gathering his belongings,

With one swift movement, he was up on his feel with his things in tow. It took him a second to remember where he was, but before long he knew which direction to go. He marched onto the sidewalk, balancing himself on the curb with a wide smile as he made his way down the street toward home.

User ImageClass had finished for the day, but that did not mean it was all over for Percival. After he was done hiding his homework in a corner of his dorm room, he had changed from his school uniform into something more comfortable. By comfortable, that mean a pair of running shorts, a muscle shirt, and some sweat bands around each wrists and his forehead. Today was his running day! Percy clipped a counter onto his ankle, to make certain he ran his required distance, then pranced out the door of his dorm room.

Sure, he could have run around the school provided track. But the scenery was the same, and rather boring. Percival wanted to see more then just the lines and the pavement. Or the bleachers. Or other boys from his school. At least he had a chance to see girls. On the plus side, he got to know the city a bit more too. Staying on school grounds was guaranteed to drive him a little crazy. Or a little more crazy then he already seemed to be?

Percival was rather pleased as he set off down the sidewalk. Perhaps he'd head towards the park. It was rather nice around there about this time. As he ran along, the counter on his ankle jiggled and suddenly flopped free. It flew ahead of him as he stumbled to a stop. The counter bounced, then came to a stop near a blond haired boy. Percy reached a hand up to wipe at his brow as he walked over. "Hey. Excuse me." He said as he knelt by the other boy. "I didn't hit you did I?"

Evan came to a skidding halt as something interesting bounced beside him. He looked down, picked it up and looked it over. It looked like.... A pedometer! A little scratched up from the fall. He turned around to the voice that called out from behind him. "Oh..." He walked up to the boy with a smile. "It missed me by this much!" He smiled with a laugh, his blond hair bounced along with it.

He motioned to hand back the boy's counter with the same smile still set on his face. "No worries. It didn't hit me at all." He chuckled, "It scared me a bit though." He looked the boy up and down, thinking he may or may not have seen him around campus. "Do you attend this school?" He couldn't tell for certain with the boy out of the school uniform. But Evan didn't think that many people who didn't go to this school would be jogging around it.

Percival's own smile seemed to be returned by the other boy. He casually reached his hand out to accept his pedometer, then knelt down to reattach it to his shoe. :Heh. Well I am glad it missed you period." He cheerfully remarked. "Elsewise it may have left a nasty bruise." Percy lifted his gaze from his show to grin a bit more at the strange boy.

"Hmm?" His head turned to glance at the school in question, then gave a slight nod. He stood up, taking a moment to shake his foot testingly so as to make sure the counter wasn't going to fall off again. "Yes. I room here in one of the dorms. I take it that you don't?" Percy held his hand out towards the other boy and took the initiative to introduce himself. "My name is Percival Lures. What is yours?"

"That would be just what I need," the curly blond boy laughed, "A reason for my mom to think I get picked on." A nasty bruise would lead to questions and who would really believe a pedometer had caused it? Certainly not his mother. He nodded his head as his schoolmate introduced himself. "It's nice to meet you Percival. I'm Evan Davison." He smiled wide at Percy, "It must be nice living in the dorms. Then you don't have to walk home everyday." He sighed, looking in the direction he was to travel.

"So Percival!" Evan perked up slightly, "Are you out for a little light exercise?" He gestured to the pedometer, "Or maybe practicing for some kind of sport?" He knew plenty of people who practiced on their own when they were in sports or clubs.

"She does realize that being teased is the staple of the whole school experience, right?" Percival joked lightly. His eyes fell down to his foot, and he was satisfied to see it had not so much as shifted out of place. Good, from now on he'd have to remember to tuck his sock up twice to give it a bit more material to cling to he supposed.

"You might think that." He found himself responding to the remark made about living in the dorms. "I do not have to walk through bad weather to get to class after all. However most people miss some of the obscenely awkward disadvantages to being in a dorm." Percival lifted his hand up and began to tick his fingers down, one long digit at a time. "No privacy at all. If you share a dorm your stuck with sometimes the most annoying personalities. No private bathroom, group showering is highly uncomfortable. It's like gym class every day, only you don't know who will walk in on you. No home cooked meals. The cafeteria food is not awful, but it really does get monotonous after a few weeks. No escape. Seriously. Everywhere you look is school and more school." His lips quirked upwards despite the long list of downsides to being in a dorm. No matter how bad it may seem from his list, Percival was not one to let it sour his mood.

"I am, in fact, part of the gymnastics team." He found himself cheerfully informing Evan. He lifted himself up onto his toes and gave a light bounce. "My run is part exersize, and part escape. To clear my head of the cluttered jumble of knowledge crammed into it while doing so in a manner that can not be questioned. I suppose you could say this is my version of slacking off and avoiding paper work." His hand flicked down the street in the direction they both seemed to be facing. "I assume your home is off this way?"

Evan could help but nod at the obvious flaws of living in a dorm held. "You have a point. I would have never thought of it that way." He skipped again with a laugh, "I just was focusing on the ups of dorm life. But I think I'd still like to live here." He nodded back towards the school. "I think the pros out weigh the cons for me." His smile softened with as he continued, "It's not like I'll be moving in anytime soon anyway!." He placed his hands in his pockets with a laugh. Now he was walking backwards, facing Percy.

"Gymnastics, eh?" He thought about the sport a moment. A lot went into something like that if you wanted to do it right. Though all sports are like that.He couldn't help but smile at Percy's cheerful tone. "Do you have fun? It seems like a hard sport to get into and stick with." He bobbed his head thoughtfully, his blond, curly hair bouncing. "And yes, I do live just a ways down." It wasn't such a long trip to the boys house, but it wasn't the quickest of routes either. "If you're gong to continue down this way, how about something to drink?"

"So then you are the optimistic sort." Percival rather cheerfully observed. "Though you are right about the Up's I suppose. In addition to all that I have some time away from my family." Which was rather good. He didn't have his mother checking his room every day to make sure he had picked up all his cloths from the floor. Nor did he have his father dropping not so subtle hints at dinner about how football is the best sport for a young boy to get involved in. Percival may have made a fine kicker, but he just didn't care for the game itself. It bored him.

Percival walked along while facing Evan. It was amusing to see him walking backwards, though he kept in mind to watch the sidewalk for any uneven pavement parts or holes that could trip the other up. "I do have fun." He informed Evan with a small nod of his head. "In truth it's not that hard to get into gymnastics. What is hard is having the commitment to the sport. You have to work pretty hard to do well, which also means you have to work very hard to learn the cool things." It also meant being wise enough not to show boat. As neat as it would have been to perform a few back flips in a effort to impress Evan. Percival knew that one small err could wind up cracking or twisting something. That would lead to being benched from his sport, and a great deal of extra effort put into recovering from letting his pride take hold.

Percival's green eyes followed the direction of Evan's hand, and he gave a larger flash of a grin. "I rather like that idea. If your fine with the idea, I can walk with you home and we can talk a bit more, then I can just jog the way back. That should satisfy my need for air I think. In the mean time you can tell me a bit more about yourself!"

“Well,” Evan began, twisting his blond locks, “It's good to be optimistic.” He had a smile plastered on his face, moving on to the next item of conversation.“It seems like it takes a lot of time...” He thought for a moment, “Well, any sport would be like that.” He smiled, looking over his shoulder to make sure they were still on the right path as if they were to deviate from it. He was excited that Percy decided to come over and hoped the house we tidied up some. He looked over to his walking buddy, a sort of smirk on his face. “You want to know about me?” He laughed a bit and turned around so that they were facing the same direction.

He coughed, looking at Percival. “There's not much to it.” He paused for a moment. “My name is Evan, I live with my mom. There aren't any activities I participate in.” He thought a little more turning to him with a smile. “How about you ask me a question and I'll answer it. I couldn't think that there's anything interesting about me that you would want to know.” He laughed again with a big smile as they neared his house.

"Hmm. It does take a good part of my free time. The way I view it though is that I enjoy it. If I had something that I enjoyed more then that is what I would be doing with my time instead." Percival ran his fingers through his hair as a unconscious mimicking of Evan playing with his own blond strands. He dropped his hand however when Evan would turn himself about to walk the right way alongside him. This was not the jog he had been expecting, but Percival figured it would not hurt to relax this time out.

Evan's suggestion of question asking seemed fine enough. he just hoped he didn't pry into anything he shouldn't. "Well allright then. That seems like a fine solution to me. First question.... What are your thoughts on lemonade?"

"Lemonade?" Evan thought for a moment. "I really do enjoy lemonade." He put a finger to his lips as the reminisced fondly. "When I was little, every third Saturday or so of the month, my mom and I would put up a little flimsy table in the yard and make lemonade to sell." He smiled, looking over at Percival. "I think I had more fun making it than selling it, since," He lowered his voice as if he were telling his friend something top secret, "Since I would just drink most of the product myself." He laughed with a crooked smile to his lips.

"That was an interesting question." He glanced ahead of them, seeing as they were nearing his house. "It sure did catch me off guard. Oh, my house is right here." He jogged up ahead of Percival, jingling the keys in his pocket before placing them in the door to unlock it. "I think my house is decent." He maybe should have thought of that earlier. "But don't mind anything. Make yourself at home." He smiled back at Percival before returning to fight with the keys before they finally gave in and he opened the door.

Mentally Percy made a note of Evan of is very much approved answer. Not that he would have allowed a negative answer to be a deciding factor in a potential friendship. It just meant Evan clearly had some good taste. "The simple concept of a lemonade stand is one that supports family bonding and the unity of warm positive memories. You associate the hard work you placed into making the lemonade and running the stand with the fun you had with your mother." Percival shook a single upraised finger in the air. "Thus the fundamentals of a good work ethic can be seen being instilled. All thanks to Lemonade." His lips still remained crooked into a mirthful smile, as if any second now he was about to burst out into laughter. Of course he did not. Percival was mostly joking, but also partly serious about what he had been saying.

"Te best kind of questions are ones you do not expect. Because then you tend to answer them honestly without thinking." Percy mused as he looked over Evan's home curiously. He thought to mention that it would hardly bother him if the house was a ramshackle war zone. Coming from such a large family himself he was used to his home in the never ending stage of 'almost started to be cleaned'. Though he decided after a moment to keep that to himself. Just in case Evan thought to ask that of him for his question.

"It's kind of you to offer, but I doubt your family would be pleased if I wandered up to your bathroom to take a quick shower in private." He jested while the other opened the lock.

As they entered, Evan's house gave off a cozy feel. Right by the door there was a place to hang your coats and place umbrellas. That gave way into the living room with hardwood flooring, a coffee table, a comfy looking couch with an equally comfy looking lazy chair to match. The old TV that sat against the wall looked as if it could use a good dusting. The dining room was adjacent to that, the chairs not quite in their place.

The blond haired boy took in the conversation while he gathered his thoughts and scanned the room. This guy sure did like his lemonade. It was a charming fact to remember. "I'm glad your question didn't throw me for a loop." He chuckled out, "I'd probably still be thinking over my answer." He walked across the room, placing his bags next to the edge of the couch, gesturing for Percival to come an settle in.

"You have a point..." He trailed off, thinking if he could in fact accommodate Percival's request before dismissing it. "Well, I have a question for you." He made his way into the kitchen, "What would you like?" He laughed to himself as if his friend could see through the walls to what he had in the refrigerator.

Percivals green eyes swept around the house with unashamed curiosity. While some visitors would try to politely just glance and focus on their host, Percival felt no such need to be discreet. He looked and examined. The ceiling, the lights, he floor, the seating, the decorations of course. He did, in fact, gawk. All while tailing Evan into the kitchen. Even here he found interesting things to look over.

"Well this is just a sort of 'how do you do' encounter I think. My questions hardly need to be the stuff of game shows, right?" With a amused little laugh he turned to try and peer over Evan's shoulder and into the fridge. "Well I would ask you to guess what I'm going to say. But as this is your Question I'll just have to answer. Do you have any lemonade? And if not, do you have any lemons and sugar?"

Evan should have known the question that was coming next. He couldn't help but laugh at himself for not thinking of it sooner. "Well, no." He looked over the contents of the fridge. Like it was fit to burst. The blond haired boy came to the conclusion that his mom must have went shopping for a family of 10. "But since there is so much stuff in here, there must be lemons." He frowned, working through the food until he finally found the lemons. "Aaaah! Here they are!" He pulled out the bundle triumphantly, handing it to Percival.

"As for sugar." He walked over to the panty, checking to see if there was any left. Not that it seemed they ever ran out of that ingredient. "Of course we have sugar." He beamed, taking the ingredient to the counter. He grabbed measuring cups, bowls, pitchers, whatever he thought they might need. "Um... Have at it?" He shrugged looking over at his friend, not really knowing where to start.
