GW's second black box limited edition juggernaut, Dreadfleet, brings naval warfare back to Warhammer Fantasy in a big loud and VERY audacious way, complete with huge detailed ships and extensive fluff for all involved.

This weekend saw our first game with it, and it was quite a treat. The set up is easy, the rules not too hard to pick up after a few turns of stumbling, and requiring you and your allies to do a very careful dance of navigation and fire to really get an advantage over the enemy. Though a few rules from Man O War would have been very welcome and I wish that damage resolution was a tad less random, it overall played as good as it needed to, and fast too; games can easily be resolved in 1-2 hours even with new players at the helm.

Any of you who've picked it up, share your first impressions on the rules, figures, ect.

I wish I could get it but our friend got himself a copy, so I am waiting with bated breath for his findings on the game.

Just a quick note: the term black box is only used to describe the black boxes with sprues and codex books GW and premium stores receive a few weeks in advance of big releases. wink

Huh. Learn something new everyday. I only used it because Space Hulk and Dreadfleet both have....well, shiny black boxes.

How spiffy is the gaming mat by the way?

Haven't had a chance to fully read the rules and play the game yet, all we did so far was assemble some of the models before vacation snuck up on me. All I can say is that the models are good stuff as usual, most go together quite easily and you get quite a nicely sized model. Favourites so far are the Black Kraken (obviously) and the ghost ship whose name eludes me right now because it is still quite early and we had a long night.

I've also had a look at the mat before I left and it is spiffy indeed, plus it's of a good size so it can easily be used for other games such as Dystopian Wars.

It looks as good as the photos make it out, just make sure you got a table that's wider than it is longer. Also, make sure that table is CLEAN before you lay it down. I ended up with a couple of dark brown spots on the bottom (that mercifully don't show up in play) from an old table leaf we'd broken out after awhile.
Got a couple games hammered out too, and already learning that coordinated navigation is definitly a game changer. You flounder about, and a more smoothly coordinated player will slap you with raking fire non-stop. Also, raking fire makes the dragons/dirigibles a lot more dangerous than their stats make them out to be.

Favorite ship so far, EASILY Grimnir's Thunder. Great armor, great command, and those dirigibles are a hoot.
