User ImageDikende had never been to these lands before, but she wasn't too impressed with them. She had harassed her dad until he took her along to visit the hyenas that lived in the graveyard. It was a nasty place, full of old broken bones and grumpy hyenas that were currently looking rather worse for the wear.

Why were those hyenas stuck in the graveyard when there was a very nice territory so close by? Sure, they were fighting with lions or whatever, but Dikende didn't think lions were so tough. So she had marched right over the border as soon as she could sneak away from her stupid dad. Huh. Lions. Dikende made a fearsome face as she looked into the distance, into the Pridelands. She hadn't been to the battle, but she couldn't imagine how the lions had beaten back the brave hyenas of the graveyard. She gave a small growl, imagining that she had a lion in front of her to beat up. There were no lions around that she could see, but if there were she would kick their butts. The little hyena pounced ferociously on a rock, imagining it to be a lion.

Samawati had reached the borders of the Pridelands before he even realized it. With so many things on his mind, the young lion had simply hoped to spend a few moments alone where he could think without being interrupted. The war was over. His injury had healed for the most part and he had started Scout training, a position he hoped to take in the future. His twin brother had died but left two cubs behind and his resemblance to the little female was extraordinary. Also, Samawati had found a few good friends but more than ever, there were times when he simply needed to find a quiet spot where he could gather his thoughts and avoid losing himself.

That was when he saw it. A young hyena. A juvenile, playing around as if there had never been a war in the first place. Again. Was it a trap? What idiot would leave such a young thing wander into lion territory after all the fighting, spilled blood and violent deaths? Were they trying to start a new war?

The yellow lion dropped to a crouch and hid in the foliage as he moved closer to the little hyena. There was a familiar feeling to his actions and, remembering the outcome of his last encounter with the cackling beasts, he couldn’t help but have a sense of foreboding as he approached the small pink-marked hyena.

Dikende was ferocious for a youngling, but she was also, well, young. In her mind she was big and brave and not afraid of any lion. She wasn't really aware of the dangers of playing around at the borders of the lions' territory. She had heard tales of the war, but it seemed unreal to her.

Growing tired of pouncing, Dikende decided to go poke around in the bushes. Maybe she could spy on the lions.

Unfortunately, someone was already there! A lion! Dikende froze, seeing only the lion's big ugly face. Ack! There was only one thing to do ... go on the offensive. Bristling like an angry cat, Dikende turned her fiercest glare on the lion. "Hey you, big stupid lion! What are you doing snooping on me?" She bared her little teeth at the lion.

Samawati stayed in place as it… she moved closer to his position, a tiny part of him interested in her reaction upon finding him. He was not amused. There were limits to how reckless one could be. He considered bellowing out a ferocious roar – he was getting pretty good at it and it would probably scare the silly thing away – but the last thing he wanted to do was to bring about a new war and the prospect of calling all the nearby Scouts as well as the little thing’s family to the exact same spot sounded like a very, very bad idea.

“You are not very smart, are you?” his throat rumbled quietly as he stepped out of the foliage with his head lowered, his voice quiet and fierce. He rose to his full size, looking down on the little hyena for a few moments before he started circling her, his head slowly lowering again. “If you start squealing, you might get many lions here. Much bigger lions. Hyenas as well. It could start a new war. So I’m just gonna warn you once. I’m faster than you. If you make too much noise, I’ll crush your throat so that you’ll never – ever- speak again.” He didn’t really intend on following up on his threat but he wasn’t going to take any chances. He wouldn’t be the catalyst to a war… again.

Dikende was outraged at the lion calling her 'not very smart'. Not very smart? Not very smart?! He was just a stupid lion! She ground her teeth, furious. The juvenile couldn't really grasp the concept of war, so that threat didn't have much effect ... but she really didn't like his next threat.

A lion had never spoken to her so. Back home there was only that dumb old nanny Manyara. Manyara would never have said anything about crushing anyone's throat! Shock overcame Dikende's anger. She shrank back a bit from the lion, swallowing hard. Her clan taught that hyenas should stand up to lions, and beat them if possible, but it was one thing to hear that safe at home and another to confront a lion all by herself. She steeled her resolve, hoping the lion wouldn't notice the nervous swishing of her tail that she couldn't quite control. "That's awful," Dikende said, glaring up at him. "That's horrible, you horrible lion. I'll bite you!"

Well yes, it was awful. He was happy she was taking his threat seriously even if her attitude didn’t change much. He wasn’t very good at deciphering hyena behavior but Samawati swore she was a little nervous. Good. It was start.

He growled under his breath before slowly opening his mouth to show the young hyena a mouthful of sharp teeth and then he clamped his mouth shut with a loud and uncomfortable sound.

“You bite me, I’ll bite you. The difference is that I might take a piece of you with me.” He growled, still circling her. “You really are stupid. You came into MY pride’s lands just after the war is over. Not too far from here, the ground is still soaked with the blood of our kinds. Corpses littered the ground not too long ago. And you’re standing there mouthing off to someone who is more than twice your size. Do you have a death wish or are you just really really stupid?”

Considering the delicate balance of this post-war period and what had happened the last he had roughed up a little bratty juvenile hyena, Samawati wasn’t too keen on touching her. Not yet, at least. And she was girl… the feminine voice – even from a creature of a different species - was something that held him back from losing his temper. But he had a feeling that words might not be enough to get his point across.

Dikende was about as ferocious as a juvenile hyena on her lonesome could be, but she had never faced up to a lion before. Not a big nasty awful mean lion, with a big shaggy lion mane and a mouth full of awful fangs. Dikende turned in a tight circle as the lion moved around her, not turning her back to him.

Ordinarily, being called stupid by some fleabag cat would have outraged Dikende past the point of sanity. Ordinarily. But she had never been confronted by such a terrifying fleabag.

She opened her mouth to spout off a sassy comeback to his frightening speech, and abruptly burst into tears.

The sound of a hyena cub – pup? – crying was so foreign to the yellow lion that it took a while before Samawati realized what was actually happening. And when he did he was nothing short of horrified as the quick step back he took and the dumbstruck expression might clearly indicate. It would be lie to say he hadn’t meant to scare the annoying little thing but her apparent confidence had led him to take his words a little too far than he normally would’ve.

“I’m not going to eat you, dammit! Just get out of here!” he roared, annoyed at how much his voice betrayed his frustration. If she’d kept her attitude, he might’ve given her a little n** to scare her away but he was a little lost in this situation. The hyenas had killed his brother. This stupid little one was trespassing on lion territory like it was nothing and mouthing off. So why did he feel like the bad guy now?

Dikende winced when the lion roared right in her face. She snuffled, trying to choke back her tears. She was a brave and ferocious young hyena, she wasn't some baby that went around bawling and weeping! The news that the lion didn't actually want to eat her was a relief, but Dikende's arrogant confidence had fled and it took a great effort to meet his eyes.

The little juvenile wanted to flee, but her legs felt all wobbly and unsure. She glared at the lion blearily. "Okay. Fine. I'll go. But how do I know you aren't going to eat me? You shouldn't be so awful!" Thinking about how terrible and frightening the lion was made her tear up again, but she managed to keep from bawling this time. "Maybe if you weren't so terrible, people would want to be friends with you and you wouldn't have to sneak around alone ruining everyone's day!"

Not that Dikende would ever want to be friends with the awful lion, of course.

Samawati felt like smacking the young hyena on the head but surprisingly he managed to contain himself.

“Stop calling me names. Are you stup-…?” Oh, the irony. The adolescent sighed, his throat grumbling continuously. “I don’t know how things are where you come from but here lions are not friends with hyenas. And you’re the one who’s sneaking around where you shouldn’t.”

Looking tired and annoyed, Samawati took another step back and gave the hyena some space. Maybe that would make her go away. “Go home.”

The very absurdity of his statement startled Dikende out of her fear somewhat. He thought lions were friends with hyenas where she came from? It was so ridiculous she wanted to laugh! It was so offensive she wanted to bite his big gross lion face clean off!

Bristling, she jumped to her feet and glared up at the horrible creature. "Lions aren't friends with hyenas anywhere," she said firmly. "Lions are horrible, and you're horrible! When I'm big I'm going to give you such a bite!"

She was working herself up into a nice righteous anger, but she wasn't as dumb as the big dumb cat. The little hyena backed away steadily as she yelled at the lion, and on her final threat she turned tail and fled.

Lions be friends with hyenas, indeed!

“You little…!” Trapped between shock and annoyance, Samawati’s reaction was somewhat delayed. He growled quite loudly as the little hyena turned to leave but made no motion to stop or chase after her. He wanted the little trespasser as far away from him as possible.

“If lions aren’t friends with hyenas, maybe it’s because hyenas are sneaky and smelly!” He finally shouted as the little hyena ran, his tone resembling that of an angry cub more and more. “NO ONE LIKES HYENAS!” He snorted, furious at himself for allowing the brown pup to get a rise out of him before he suddenly decided to leave as well. He wanted to return to Pride Rock, a place he knew no hyena would reach, as soon as possible.
