Nahasi decided to have a talk to one of the council members. All the council members were picked by his father. He had yet a chance to pick one. Before leaving the crown his father had chosen a young leopard to join the council. He wasn't much older than Nahasi and he didn't approve of it. When he thought of the council members he thought of older, experienced members, not ones just a hair older than him. What was his father thinking when he assigned Ijara the role, especially without consulting his own son!
He made his way through the maze and found Ijara's den. Quietly he waited outside it, debating what his next move should be. Normally he would have no issue with just barging in. He was king now afer all, but he still would feel guilty afterwards. Even if he was king he should show his fellow brothers respect. “Ijara if you are in, could I speak with you. It is Nahasi.” He said loudly as he waited. He hoped Ijara would be off doing something else and not in his den.

Ijara had taken a walk around the well known tunnels that he called home. His time as a digger and a guide left him with expert knowledge with their layouts. He took regular walks within them to keep that up to date. As he approached his den, he was faintly surprised to see Nahasi standing outside. His new liege hadn't sought him out before.
"My Lord, is there something I could help you with?"

Nahasi glanced at the leopard. He quietly judged him, sizing him up. "You can answer my questions. My father put you on the council before he left the throne. I find it interesting he would put someone so young on the council. You are only a fur older than I am, and yes I know I am young to be king, but I think you are very young to be on you council." He spoke his feelings to the leopard. When he was younger he would never even think about saying such things to a council member, but now that he was king he felt he should be aloud to do such things.

Hmm, he had to admit, he wasn't expecting this. After listening he bowed his head politely. "My Lord, I would certainly answer any questions that you have about my work on the council. What would you like to know?"

Nahasi watched the leopard for any sign of weakness. "Why did my father put you on the council in the first place? What qualities do you have that he found he needed in a member of the council." If he was still heir, he would have been slapped for questioning a council member. Thank the gods he was king.

"Those are excellent questions your Highness. It is good of a leader to know the strengths of those that serve them." He gestured towards his den. "Come inside and make yourself comfortable. I will see that all your questions are answered." He bowed politely and waited for Nahasi to enter.

Nahasi walked into the den and sat down in a corner. He didn't confess that he wasn't interested in Ijara's strengths, only his weakness. If he were to kick Ijara off the council he would have to have a decent reason other than 'my daddy loved him more than me.' If he did that it would only show how childish he was. "Thank you for letting me in," he said remembering his manners. "You have a nice den here, not as big as mine of course, but nice. Did my father give you it?"

Ijara followed Nahasi in and sat down in another corner. At his King's additional questions to took a quick look around his den. It was sparse and not too big, just the way he liked it. "Thank you my Lord. I actually dug this out myself. I was granted some land back when I was a tunneler. Your father did offer me accommodations, but I declined." The den had been much to large. He always felt uncomfortable in wide spaces. He much preferred the embrace of the tunnels.
"But back to the matter. To answer your questions from before." He looked back at Nahasi. "The reasons your father gave for putting me on the council are a few. He said that I have a talent for looking at a situation from a different point of view. I believe his words were 'You have a knack for being a natural third party.' He also said that I can remain calm in situations that others would panic."
He remembered the day he first met the now former King. It was during the tunnel collapse that he and a few others had been caught in. It had been a very long, tiring ordeal but they had managed to get out relatively unharmed. Ijara had remained collected and lead the team to freedom. He had meet the King as he emerged from the wreckage, covered nose to tail in dirt. The king commended him for getting everyone out safely and seemed to take a liking to the young leopard after that.
"I also have an extensive knowledge of the tunnels. I have been working with them ever since I was old enough to allowed to dig."
He bowed his head again to Nahasi.
"If your father had anymore reasons, he did not speak them to me. I hope my answers have satisfied you your Highness."

"Your welcome." he said bitterly. How perfect is this guy, Nahasi thought as he watched Ijara. Of course his father would offer him a bigger den, for his favorite council member. When he was heir he was still stuck in the den with his siblings, though it wasn't long after that he was made king.
Nahasi nodded his head. There was nothing wrong with those reason at all, he thought. He wished there was though. He thought back when he was old enough to dig out tunnels. What was he doing? Playing hide and seek with Jem probably. He wasn't interested in digging, though now he regretted it because of his lack of knowledge on where the tunnels laid.
"My father spoke very highly of you. He said that it was one of his best choices to put you on the council. Do you agree with that?" he asked. He wondered how the leopard would respond with a question.

The leopard took a moment to think about this.
"I do not know if I was the best choice. There are others older and more experienced then me that your father could have chosen. I do not know what the ultimate deciding factor your father had for appointing me the seat. But what I do know is that I am thankful to him. He has given me the opportunity to help the Brotherhood in ways that I could only dream of."

Nahasi nodded understandably. 'Darn it. His answer was too perfect. Why couldn't he stop at his flaws.' Nahasi thought. "My father made some mistakes in his time as king. I wonder if you were one of them." He said coolly. "I guess only time will tell. If you need me for anything, anything at all just find me and I'll help you out. For a king, I've ben told I'm very reliable."
Plus he would be there at Ijara's moment of need, when he was failing hard enough to get the king. It would be the perfect moment to demote him, Nahasi thought. "Oh and good luck with your duties."

Ijara bowed to Nahasi. "I'm glad that my answers seemed to have sufficed. If you have anymore please yet me know."
He listened to his King's parting words. "Thank you my Lord, I will see that I do them to the utmost of my abilities."
