Dragonflight Pern Captain

Approximately a week after the Hatching, the Weyrwoman’s Wake was held. The Pernese were not a very spiritual group, with no organized religion, but the loss of a woman strong and capable enough to lead the proud and headstrong members of Benden Weyr deserved some respect. And so, in memory of the woman and her dragon, a small festival was held to honour her memory. It was held out in the Weyrbowl where dragons and Riders alike could mingle, though many dragons had fuzzy memory, if any, of the incident now. Refreshments were laid out, complete with a separate table of beverages for the Weyrlings and youths of the group. Glow baskets dotted the area and while there was a certain pallor over the gathering, there was a positive emotion beneath it. Everyone had someone to remember, to honour and speak fondly of. Those who knew Kestril told stories of the few times she’d be spotted in good humour, speaking to a favoured rider, flirting shamelessly with a bronze, or how fiercely and capably she maneuvered political relations. Yirath’d strength of character was also lauded, gilded to perfection by her death – most had forgiven her outbursts and feral responses at the end, speaking of them in hushed, sympathetic tones. Everyone in the Weyr was invited and the Wake had been scheduled to run the better part of two days so that everyone could have the chance to mingle with their leadership – Wing Drills were cancelled for the two days as the Weyr officially mourned the loss of their Weyrwoman. W’lin and his bronze were a near constant presence at the Wake and the other Wingleaders were frequently there as well, fielding questions, fishing for laughter. The Weyrleader was a blunt and rough man, yes, but in playing host he seemed suited the role – a few mentioned is was the result of being searched from an affluent Hold. Others attributed it to his being a bronzerider, as it was well known bronzeriders all had sort of forceful snobbery about them. Quote: Notes-The Wake is in the Weyrbowl -The Wake will ICly take place over two full days (2 days, 1 night) so that anyone can drop by regardless of schedule -Refreshments and snacks are provided, bonfires have been lit -Current time is evening on the first day (please RP as if the time were early evening) -RP with any of the leadership NPCs is certainly encouraged! -Only Benden Riders and Characters, however

As he had expected after gathering his feelings on the eggs Roscoe had not managed to impress at Yirath's last clutch - which was a bit of a pity considering the way things had turned out after the touching. There had been a good many decent colored dragons in that clutch as well..and none of the weaklings so lauded by the other Weyrs and so despite his lack of a dragon partner as of yet Roscoe had come to pay his respects to not only to the passed Weyrleader but to Yirath and her final tribute to Pern as well. There would always be the next clutch to find his.
In any case it seemed a bit selfish to be thinking such thoughts at such an event and so Roscoe decided to linger near the drinks where many of the stories were being told by the older riders of the Weyr. Helping himself to a glass - hey he wasn't under restriction as a new rider so he might as well take advantage right? He meandered between the many groups.

Tsubari woke earlier than normal so that he could at least get out and pay his respects to in a small way to such a great Gold and her rider. The brown wher looked up from his spot, getting ready to move beside his Handler. "Not now, Tsubarisk. I will be back shortly and we can go on patrol with someone."
It wasn't much, but he figured it would be a good thing to do. He stepped out into the fading light and went to grab something to eat. He knew most of the riders, but some of the Candidates were new to him. He looked around, wondering if there was anything that he could say to the Weyrleader. He thought better of it, at least for now.

Had it really been a week since Yirath had passed? K'en's sense of time was rather skewed at the moment with all that had happened. On the one hand, he could remember the events of the Hatching as if it had only just happened. On the other hand, his bond with Stromath was so perfect and complete that he honestly couldn't fathom how he had ever lived without the young bronze. He'd often said before that he and his brother were two parts of a whole, but this here was an entirely different sort of whole altogether. A void had been filled that he hadn't even known had existed before the Impression. Only now could he truly understand the sort of pain that poor Yirath endured in the days past Kestril's death. Her entire being really had been ripped in half.
She is at peace now, Mine, Stromath calmly reminded His for the upteenth time today. Their pain is no more. Let us instead honor and remember them for the leaders that they were.
... You're right, K'en agreed, patting his dragon affectionately. I'm sorry. I've just never done well with funerals.
Is this not a wake?
... Close enough.
The bronze looked cooly about them, taking in the scene and assessing who all was around. Shall we pay our respects then? It wasn't actually a question.
K'en gave a small nod. Yes. That was why they were here after all. The question was, to whom?
We start with Father and His, Stromath answered simply, leading the way toward W'lin and his bronze.
Straight to the Weyrleader? The teen flushed slightly before quickening his pace to be at his dragon's side once more. He could certainly see the sense in addressing him first, but aside from when he had received his knot he had never actually had much contact with the other rider.
Now is not a poor time to start then.
Yes, yes... It wouldn't really be so bad... right? Maybe? He looked friendly enough at least. Once they were close, both K'en and Stromath gave appropriate bows to the pair in charge. "Our condolences on Kestril and Yirath," he began. "They did much good for Benden."

W'lin was conversing a pair of blue riders about the Candidates that had not impressed when the new bronze rider approached. He turned slightly at the comment, gave a nod and smiled at the pair of blue riders in a dismissal. Taking the hint, they turned to one another and resumed their conversation a few steps off.
Sipping from his cup of klah - the man seemed attached to the stuff as of recently - the Weyrleader regarded K'en and his lifemate with a critical eye. The dragonet was still small but the skin was not cracked, a good thing. Promising, really, as it was hard to keep the little ones oiled enough especially when they were a metallic. "
He cleared his throat, the steam of his breath curling in the air above his head before dissipating, "They did, they were a unique pair... well suited to leading." The Weyrleader's tone was a little more friendly then usual as he gave a mild bow in return, "How are you? I trust this first week has been full of discoveries?"
Beyond him, the adult bronze lifted his head and warbled at the young dragon, at once seeing him as a future rival and a ward to be taught.

Ah, now K'en felt bad. He hadn't really meant to interrupt the conversation that W'lin had been having with the blueriders... He'd have to be more careful of such things in the future, even if it was sort of inevitable at gatherings such as this. He did his best to remain still and not fidget as the Weyrleader looked them both over, seeming to evaluate them. There would certainly be no fault found with Stromath, but he was still a bit doubtful about himself. At the other's question, the brown-haired teen smiled and nodded. "Yes, it has been quite the experience thus far, and we are both doing very well." While he knew that there was still much more to come, it was hard to imagine things getting any better than they already were; even with the added work. "I'm sure that things have been rather busy for everyone." Perhaps that was putting it lightly.
Stromath gave a polite hum and a nod back up to Bruinth, pleased to formally meet the other. They would certainly be rivals some day, yes, but he had quite a long ways to go before that would ever be the case. Also, a bit of respectful rivalry didn't have to be a bad thing, really. It was simply a part of life. In the meantime, he did not at all mind being taught by those who were older and more experienced in their positions.

((Anyone who wants to approach F'itz feel free!))
F'itz nodded vaguely to his dragon's words, taking a goblet of wine for himself and sipped slowly. It was a good vintage, no less than she deserved. "She was a good woman," he said to nobody in particular. "Not always nice, but who is? A good woman. Just what Benden needed." What would they do now? W'lin was all very well but he was just one man, and had plenty to do with his duties in preparing the Weyr for battle without adding the duties of a Weyrwoman too. Sure he must see he was taxing himself too much, that he couldn't sustain it.
Up on their ledge Brumath rumbled softly, staring down at the tiny people moving about far below him as though he could pierce to their souls with his dull green eyes. the brown continued,
Brumath was thinking very, very uncomfortable thoughts. He didn't even want to contemplate the possibility of his Weyrleader being responsible for Kestril's death. That poor woman. He remembered her Impression, how she's straightened up and strode proud and confident towards the meat tables with Yirath at her side. How she would have gloated over Malvren and Trine had she lived to see her lifemate's twin daughters born.

Kindra had done her best to look presentable, her hair was immaculate, she'd spent a while on it to get it looking good, she'd picked a muted color for her dress, no use looking too flashy at a sombre time like Kestril and Yirath's Wake, if it had been any other rider, she probably wouldn't have gone but she knew it was important to pay her respects and she'd spent the time to look halfway decent (in her eyes) for it. She couldn't hide the rings under her eyes though, every noise outside her and Suunath's Weyr had her and her dragon waking, luckily the Gold always managed to go right back to sleep but Kindra had taken to sleeping with a knife (stolen from the kitchens during a trip for midnight snacks after waking to oil Suunath) under her pillow, she wasn't about to get caught unawares. The lack of regular sleep showed on her face but she saw it on other weyrlings so she suspected that others were waking at all hours to feed and oil their growing dragons too, she hoped it wouldn't be too noticable on her face.
She didn't wait around once she was dressed and walked side by side with Suunath into the weyrbowl. Nudged slightly by Suunath (who hadnt approved of all the fussing with her hair but understood why Kindra felt the need to do it) Kindra walked up to the Weyrleader and gave a deep bow, not bringing herself to curtsey. "Weyleader W'lin sir, im sorry for the loss of Kestril and Yirath, their passing will never be forgotten and i will honor their memory.
"As will i, Mine tells me you ride my sire, i will not let him, or my mother down, Kindra tells me she was a great dragon, i am sorry that you lost your mate when Yirath's rider died" Added Suunath who crooned towards the bronze who was her father as well.
Kindra was surprised by the tenderness in Suunath's tone and looked at her slightly oddly but smiled and opened her mouth to ask something but decided against it, she would just take the time to talk with some of the older riders that knew Kestril, she wanted to learn more about her and how she'd managed the weyr but felt it wasn't the best time to ask about her to W'lin, he was likely still grieving and she didnt want to intrude on that.

[K'en and Kindra]
"To say the least," W'lin agreed with a tight smile, "but we shall go on. Benden has suffered a great tragedy, but we have a bright future ahead that we must press on towards...." Ah, and here came a part of that future. W'lin gave a small bow to the young gold rider just as he had to the young bronze rider. "Thank you for your sympathy," he replied calmly though with a hint of sadness in his tones, "I have no doubt that you and Yours will do them proud."
Bruinth replied softly,
"We will find whoever did this," W'lin added after a moment, glancing up at his dragon as the bronze rumbled down at his tiny daughter. "They can't hide forever."

Kindra smiled grimly at W'lin's last comment "no they can't and i know you will find them, you're our Weyrleader after all" she said, pride in her voice for her Weyr, to whom she belonged even more now that she had Suunath. She turned to K'en and smiled before moving to walk off. Here she paused and waited for him to catch up "might as well walk down together K'en" she smiled again. "Weyrleader" she nodded a farewell, she was sure she would bump into him again though.
Suunath blinked and looked up at the great Bronze, her eyes whirling happily at his rumble before turning her attention to the bronze who was more her size, "Stromath, good evening, I trust you and Yours are doing well?" she asked politely, moving up to walk alongside Kindra, putting the humans between the two dragons.

Ah, apparently his conversation with the Weyrleader was over then...? A small part of him was mildly amused by her assumption, but he supposed it would probably be best to move on now. He gave a small parting bow to the W'lin before following the goldrider per her request. "It is a pleasure to see you again, Kindra," he said as they walked along. "You are looking rather lovely this evening." It was clear that she had spent a good amount of time making herself presentable-- just as it was also clear that she was rather tired. "Have you been faring well?" While it was true that their dragons required much care, they would need to be careful to still take care of themselves as well. He didn't see an exhausted mind being much better from a newly bonded dragon than an intoxicated one.
Once their humans had started moving, Stromath had likewise given a parting bow to W'lin and Bruinth before following along at a languid pace. Quite well, thank you, he replied with an appreciative nod. What about you and Yours? Have you been able to keep in contact with your sister through the chores? Granted, they were all brothers and sisters, but when it came to the twin golds he doubted that he needed to specify which sister he was referring to.

He remembered her Impression, how she's straightened up and strode proud and confident towards the meat tables with Yirath at her side. How she would have gloated over Malvren and Trine had she lived to see her lifemate's twin daughters born. Canoake was tired of dressing like a stuffy holder woman. Once again, she was in conservative clothing. Long sleeves and high collar with a simple straight lined skirt and knee high boots. She felt almost like she were hiding. Taking a goblet of wine, she circled. Watching, waiting to see how others were reacting and whom was talking to who. And just like old times, lesser colors with lesser colors, higher colors with higher colors. She hoped that neither gold would be too stuck in their ways to want to speak to a green rider.
Her eyes gleamed as she noticed F'itz. So far, no one else had caught her attention or called her over. Which was fine with her. Right now, it would not do good to play favorites. Especially with Tatath due to rise any day now. Walking over with shoulders and back straight, she gave a slight nod. "Well met, F'itz though the occasion is not a merry one. A celebration of life, especially with such a fine brood left behind. Hopefully, one of her daughters will be just what we need for the future."Tatath stayed in her own weyr for now. She was irritable towards other greens and more so towards the male dragons. Though normally she enjoyed being watched and spoken to, lately she preferred her own company. But as always, she kept her manners. Brumath. Greetings to you and yours.
