Aquarius screamed and threw the book she was holding at the wall.

There were no youma nearby, no chaos monsters making a return for more tasty treats. Anyone coming to see what the fuss was about would either be relieved or disappointed to find Aquarius alone, staring at the place where her book had bounced off the shelf. She hadn't gotten through every book she could reach yet, but after weeks of looking, it sure felt like it. And what did she have for her troubles? Nothing. Everyone thought she was useless, and after working for weeks with no real results, she was starting to agree.

"This can't be right," she said, addressing the people who were drawn by her brief tantrum. "If we've looked this long and gotten nowhere, we must be looking in the wrong place. I'm sure there's some way to use the information, but if there's a key, it's not here. Therefore, it must be somewhere else." The answer was so simple, Aquarius wondered why she didn't think of it sooner.

Which left only one question: where was this "key" she was looking for? There were a few options. The protected bookshelves were possible, but unlikely. The books they contained didn't appear to be particularly special or even very different from the ones they had access to. The minaret was another option; while Aquarius remembered that her private rooms were there, the entrance remained hidden. But if she'd had something as important as translation notes, would she have kept them in a place that others could get to without too much fuss?

"Of course not!" she exclaimed, snapping her fingers. "No, it must be there." Grinning in a somewhat unsettling way, she pointed straight down. "I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier. The really important materials were kept in an underground chamber." She paused, partly for emphasis, partly to rack her brain for more details. "But it's got all kinds of safeguards on it, to keep the wrong sort of people from finding it. Nothing dangerous, but it'll take some serious skills to be able to get in. Of course, if we all work together-"

Her senshiphone beeped loudly, interrupting her mid-dramatic speech. Warily, Aquarius glanced at the phone. "Now? Really?" She rolled her eyes and sighed. "There's something important I need to see to. You guys stay here where it's safe... though if you want, you could look around and see if you can find a way into the underground passages. If there's something good enough there, maybe we'll be able to read some of this stuff finally, huh? I remember there being an entrance out back, but that's all I can tell you. Good luck, if you're trying, and thanks in advance!"

The courtyard behind Aquarius Outpost was dry and mainly played host to only the hardiest of plant life. Scrub grasses held firm here, and several hardy cacti-looking plants, but by and large the landscape appeared to be sand, fine and white. The sand was already beginning to work its way into the shoes of the displaced civilians who'd stepped out into it. When they looked back, they could see that any footprints they left remained undisturbed and stark: there was no wind here to till the sand, or erase the imprint of these off-worlders having disturbed the outpost landscape. The sand was another security measure, perhaps -- the Zodiacs, it seemed, were an extremely vigilant group.

Aquarius, many of the civilians had noticed, wore light, flat shoes that looked easy to slip on and off. They had to wonder, as the sand in their shoes began to itch and chafe their skin, if that wasn't so that she could easily take them off to dump the sand out. Since Aquarius hadn't come with them, however, there was no way of asking. Perhaps later.

Just now, the sand stretched bleakly before them, and at the far end of it, they could see the high, rising sandstone of the outpost's outer ramparts.

This is an open RP for metacivilians who would like to put their downtime to good use trying to help Aquarius make some progress in their research to try to understand why these civilians are here and how to send them home again. To do this, they will have to make their way to Aquarius's underground storeroom where her predecessors stored their own personal research. Aquarius's hope is that, if they're able to decipher any part of the languages common to her 10,000+ book collection, perhaps eventually they'll be able to progress in that research.

Each metacivilian will compete in a series of elimination rounds to reach Aquarius's underground storeroom, which is protected by a series of non-lethal booby traps. Challenges will be based on Athleticism, Intelligence, and Creativity, traits every Aquarius of ages past would have expected of himself or herself.

This event thread is non-combative -- no metacivilians are expected to die by participating in it. If your character is eliminated, they are simply unable to progress any further, and must turn back (though their pride may be a bit bruised). However, be aware that just because battle is not on the agenda does not mean that it is safe from outside intervention.

Challenges in this thread are pre-written, and will progress daily. If you are signing up for this event, be prepared to post every 24 hours, or your character will be eliminated from the race. All challenges will be posted by this account, Olmequarius, due to the fact that DivineSaturn is having computer problems- if she is unable to post, one of her helpers will keep things moving.

All challenges will involve dicerolls, to preserve fairness for our participants, but some challenges may require you to participate in other ways as well. Be prepared to do a little more than just roll the dice!

Each civilian has three major stats that will be tested in the course of this event:
* Athleticism
* Intelligence
* Creativity

At the beginning of the event, you have the opportunity to choose one Advantage in one of the three stats -- your Advantaged Stat will give you a 1 point bonus to all dice rolls for that stat (don't worry, we'll explain this to you each time you have to roll a stat, if it gets confusing!).

We recommend taking an Advantage you think fits with your character's personality and skills, for more immersive roleplay, but this isn't required -- you can choose a different advantage if you prefer. Challenges get harder as the event progresses. The challenges are as follows:

1. The Moat - Athleticism Challenge
2. The Steps - Intelligence Challenge
3. The Door - Creativity Challenge
4. The Gauntlet - Challenges All Three Skills

In order to sign up for the event, please make a post here describing your character walking out into the rear courtyard to explore, as Aquarius suggested. In your post, indicate (in bold) which stat your character is going to be Advantaged in throughout the event. For example: "Jane Smith felt confident she could get past whatever age-old booby traps Aquarius had down there. Sure, she might not have been the burliest girl in gym class, and maybe she'd once forgotten where Canada was on a map, too, but her parents always told her she was creative as a child. Her creativity had to count for something!"

Everyone who posts before the first challenge will be able to play. If fewer than twelve people sign up, we'll just have a smaller group! SIGNUPS CLOSE IN 24 HOURS.

Bela loved stories and books, so it was impossible to keep her away when she heard Aquarius' outburst and a book having been thrown against the wall. The storyteller looked confused, however as the Zodiac explained there was something that seemed to spark in the woman.

After Aquarius left she marched into the sands, lucky her boots kept some of the sand out but the more she walked the more she felt the sand filter in. "Oh for heaven sakes." She muttered half tempted to just take off her shoes and leave them, granted that might not be a good idea.

She stretched for a second confident that all her storytelling creativity would give her an edge. After all this place had an expansive library, so why wouldn't it be a piece of cake?

Some of the civilians had used their time and boredom to become well versed in the Surrounding. Despite the dangers they traveled back and forth between the outposts, exploring, meeting people, doing whatever. Menthe Sylvia had turned out to be about as much of a homebody here in space though as she was at home. And while she did a few short trips around she always found herself back at 'home' in Aquarius, happy with the mountains of book and the fairly quiet environment that the furthest outpost brought.

The timid young woman was more than a little startled when Aquarius reacted so strongly and cryptically. But it didn't keep her from joining the others that made their way out to the courtyard. It sounded potentially scary.. and she didn't really think she had any great special talents to help.. but Aquarius had opened her home to them and the least she could do was try!

Heck... maybe her silly crossword puzzle skills and avid reading of survival guides and books of facts would actually be of some use. Her mother had always said she was a very intelligent girl. If nothing else, well read!

After what a mess things turned out to be at Virgo, Keren Della-Blue had hopped the next bandwagon out of that popsicle stand and wound up at Aquarius, at least for the time being. It turned out that there was a lot going on there - at least as chances for glory went. Aquarius's offer was one the new arrival simply could not refuse.

As she marched onto the sands of the far courtyard, Keren braided her regal purple pigtails into a pair of utilitarian braids and hiked up her basketball shorts. She leaned over and re-tied her shoes; double-knots. Whatever needed doing, this was one girl who was sure she would succeed. Nothing could scare Keren Della-Blue: she played Junior Varsity! Surely her athleticism would carry her through.

Keren cracked her knuckles and glanced over at the other girls. "What do you think's down there? Mummies?" she asked. Anything short of giant spiders and Keren was more than game.

Callum was looking high and low for answers. All sorts of answers, some of which were about why they were here, the common goal. But he also wanted to know about the strange space monster venom that had induced his two-day coma and the funky dreams that followed. Maybe there would be books that could even contain information about what he saw in his dream. Either way, Callum could not shake his curiosity and new obsession with dreams. Aquarius Outpost and the ancient tomes might have the answer.

The young man left Virgo and headed to Aquarius. If he was lucky, maybe he'd get to hear some news about his sister, Layton. He'd keep his eyes and ears open to find all the answers he needed. Intelligence would be his best friend.

When he arrived, Callum was surprised (a little bit pleasantly) to see a familiar face, Keren. She did drag his a** all the way back to Virgo, that counted for something in his book. "I hope there's not mummies," Callum smiled weakly. After what he had experienced, he wasn't going to discount the possibility.

Eliza grinned at the thought of an adventure and wiggled her toes in the sands of the Aquarius outpost, choosing to remain barefoot as she often did, sporting a few scrapes on her little feet. She wanted help, she always wanted to help, so here she stood.

She wasn't sure what she could offer to the little group, she was most certainly imaginative, but she wasn't sure how much that could possibly help. She been raised a only child and let run wild so imaginative, yes she was, but she was also atheletic. Yes, she climbed trees with ease and could run for hours, so maybe that was what she could offer, her atheletism.

She looked around at the other Keren in particular, "Mummies would be neat, but seeing first hand some of the bad things that can happen here I am kind of hoping for not mummies."

Marienrode was fairly sure her work shoes were secure against sand, reaching about midway up her shins as they did. If all else failed, she would have to lose them, she decided; and she stepped out of the shadows of a doorway into the gathering place, squinting her eyes a bit against the light. "I'm almost certain no senshi will guide us into danger," she said calmly, but somewhere in the back of her mind she doubted it. The little blonde was a fanatic for her Princess, who wouldn't let them into danger. No worries there. The tall dark-haired one seemed more occupied trying to save his Outpost from ruin. The redheaded twins (twins?) often seemed inebriated.

Perhaps ironically, the intelligent woman considered the Zodiac whose outpost she'd been staying on the most enigmatic. For that reason, she didn't reassure the children around her any further than she already had. No use driving hopes up when she didn't know that her promises would be kept.

The glittering cloud that was Ghost!Hawke flittered around the edges of the Aquarius outpost when the scream was heard. Floating her way in she turned her head to the side as the zodiac became more frantic with book throwing. The ******** was she so pissed about? Finding s**t? Obviously s**t was nuts.

And then ghost Hawke got hungry. Time to go find some nuts~

That was how the glittering cloud appeared at the Aquarius outpost and just as quickly vanish.

Out of all of the outposts, Felix found himself spending the most time at Aquarius’. It wasn’t just the fact that this was his home base, but that it was filled to the brim with ancient texts and interesting implements that piqued his curiosity. When he first discovered that he could not read the books, it had aggravated him. Not only did a barrier block him, but everything was written in an intergalactic language! Yet he still found himself wandering the halls and rooms of the outpost.

Unsurprisingly, the Zodiac’s outburst had caught Felix’s attention as well as that of a few others. An underground passage? If its discovery would lead to useful information, Felix didn’t mind searching for it. While he wasn’t particularly athletic, he had always liked to consider himself intelligent. As he passed by a familiar face, he stopped and stared at Callum. “Oh. It’s you. Haven’t seen you in a while,” he remarked with a somewhat displeased face.

Kestrel had been finding herself at Aquarius's outpost more often then not and partially wondered why she didn't just move in. The scream caught her attention though and like a few of the others she rushed to see what had happened. The idea of helping these senshi didn't exactly thrill her but the idea of getting her own information from it seemed to make the decision for her.

She followed the others down to this underground passage thing. At least it would give her something to do, for a while at least. However what would Kestrel add to the group other then annoyance? Probably her athleticism as though she was intelligent, she wasn't creative and she was much more into being athletic then any of the others. It would have probably suited her more if her annoying behaviour and probably whining would have helped them in some way.

Mary needed some way to distract herself. She'd been wallowing in loneliness for too long and needed something active to do. Was that why she walked half way around the Surrounding to get to her home base? Perhaps. Was that why she followed the group into the underground, not completely understanding what was going on? Perhaps.

Or was it because the minute she stepped down into it her creativitiy started to work over time? More likely.

In any event, she stayed towards the back of the group, following quietly and making sure she didn't think too hard about things.
