Name:
Magic Affinity: Ichnaea's affinity lies in the realm of tracking; in simple terms he is able to find people, objects or animals even if they are huge distances away. However, this ability is not quite as simple as thinking about who or what he wants to find and then knowing instinctively where it is. As a broad rule Ichnaea cannot use his aether alone to track things. He must first find some sort of physical item to focus his aether on and use it to lock onto his 'target' and find them, much the same as regular trackers require signs left behind in order to find what they are looking for. The item in question must be fairly intimately linked to the target of his magic, either holding emotional value (e.g. a necklace lost during a skirmish) or has been carried on/with the target for a long time (e.g. a scrap of hair). He can use traditional tracking signifiers alongside his magic, such as footprints or dung, but these are less accurate and do not allow him to pinpoint the direction of what he is looking for as easily, the aforementioned personal items are by far his preferred 'focus'. When Ichnaea works his magic his aether does not take an obvious visual form, instead it manifests itself as a crawling sensation upon the skin on those close to him. It is not an entirely pleasant feeling and most would liken it to the feeling of small insects moving about on your skin. When Ichnaea has 'locked onto' his target he can feel the direction in which they are in and a rough estimation of the distance they are away from him. The more Ichnaea has tracked a specific person (or in the case of animals, the more he has tracked a species in general) the easier it is for him to accurately find them and the less he needs a focusing object. Indeed, people Ichnaea knows intimately enough can be tracked by him without a focusing device - but he must first have spent a lot of time in their company. (Practically the only person this applies to is Micajah.)
Animal/Essence:
Appearance: At first glance Ichnaea appears to be quite intimidating. A hulk of lumbering metal equipped with curved claws and clinking plate armour does not instantly speak of a meek and mild character that would not hurt a fly. However, looks can be deceiving and Ichnaea is not nearly as tough as would first seem. His 'skin' is a matte grey metal; very smooth and slightly warm to the touch. Calcium is a soft metal and there is the tiniest amount of give in his skin. Not nearly as much as human flesh, but enough for him not to feel like cold-insensitive metal. On select parts of his body (his legs, forehead, and tail) are encrustations of shell-like material. These stand out against his metallic frame and are lilac-y mother of pearl in colour. They feel hard, much like tooth enamel or the inside of a shell, and although some segments of his tail taper out to become quite thin they are very strong. When Ichnaea walks, the plates of his tail clink together producing a pleasant noise somewhat like a wind chime. Consequentially people often know Ichnaea is coming a little while before he can actually be seen.
Personality: Ichnaea is quite a quiet soul; he enjoys contemplative silence just as much as chatting to people and if he's in a room with people and nobody is talking, he's not one to unnecessarily break the silence. Quite often when he and Micajah are in the city, either working or socializing with people on the rare occasion that they have time out from studying, he will often slip off into less crowded areas to breath, gather his thoughts and enjoy time out from the hustle and bustle of human life. That being said, he is not unsocial. Indeed, Ichnaea is just as much friendly as he is a loner. He doesn't dislike company and when he is around people that he is comfortable and well acquainted with he'll speak just as much as the next person. He does however have quite a naturally hushed and reserved manner of speaking and in noisy environments it's a strain to hear him sometimes.

Just like his user, Ichnaea's greatest love is the great outdoors. In fact, Ichnaea potentially loves being outside even more than Micajah. He feels a great connection with the natural world - something akin to what most people would assume homunculi might feel, considering they are made from plants and such. As a result it sometimes put him at odds with those tinkerers and scientists who think that man can do better than mother nature; despite the fact that he is clearly a man-made construct. Needless destruction of nature and animal cruelty send Ichnaea into a frenzy which is so unlike his usual fairly placid state that even Micajah finds it difficult to talk to him and calm him down. In addition to this bond with the environment, children and interested youths seem to gravitate towards him; both because of his unusual appearance and 'mysterious' (aka. quiet) personality. Luckily his caring and quite demeanour means that he is very considerate with youngster and his patience holds true even with especially bratty children.

Music is something else that Ichnaea feels quite strongly about. Although he is not especially musically gifted himself - or at least, as far as he is aware - Ichnaea loves to hear other people play or sing. When he was first made he would sit at Micajah's mother's feet whilst she knitted in the evening and spend hours with his eyes half shut, drinking up her simple folk songs that she half sung, half hummed whilst she worked. He prefers more rudimentary music, like wind-chimes, basic melodies and one-instrument performances, as opposed to orchestras or bands, but on a whole one can quickly win his attention and affection if you display some kind of musical talent.

The Giant Anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, is the largest species of anteater. It is the only species in the genus Myrmecophaga. It is a solitary animal, found in many habitats, including grasslands, deciduous forests and rainforests. It feeds mainly on ants and termites, sometimes up to 30,000 insects in a single day. The genus name Myrmecophaga is from Greek murmekos, ant, and phagein, to eat.

The giant anteater is one of few taxa of mammals without any teeth even in a mature state. An anteater instead crushes insects it consumes using hard growths found on the inside of its mouth, and its flabby stomach. Sand and small rocks have also been found in anteaters' stomachs, suggesting that these are ingested to aid digestion (possible gastroliths). They have an average body temperature of 32.7oC, which is one of the lowest of all land-living mammals. This low rate of metabolism, common in xenarthrans, means it is inactive for a mammal.

It grows to a size of up to 7 feet in length, with a 4-foot-long head and torso, and a 3-foot-long tail. Generally it weighs from 65 to 140 pounds. The giant anteater is covered with stiff, straw-like hair which grows up to 40 cm long on the tail. Young have soft hair until they are mature. The dominant colouring may be grey or brown, but all have a diagonal black and white shoulder stripe.

The giant anteater is generally acknowledged to have a very keen sense of smell, used to locate ants, but is thought to have poor sight and hearing. The giant anteater does not sleep in any fixed place, instead curling up in abandoned burrows and hollows. It covers its body with its long, bushy tail to sleep. The anteater's tongue can reach 2 feet in length, but has a width of only 1⁄2 inch. The anteater can cover its tongue in a sticky saliva, allowing it to trap ants, and can extend and withdraw it up to 150 times per minute.

Calcium is the chemical element with the symbol Ca and atomic number 20. It has an atomic mass of 40.078 amu. Calcium is a soft gray alkaline earth metal, and is the fifth most abundant element by mass in the Earth's crust. Calcium is also the fifth most abundant dissolved ion in seawater by both molarity and mass, after sodium, chloride, magnesium, and sulfate. Calcium is essential for living organisms, particularly in cell physiology, where movement of the calcium ion Ca2+ into and out of the cytoplasm functions as a signal for many cellular processes. As a major material used in mineralization of bones and shells, calcium is the most abundant metal by mass in many animals.

Chemically calcium is reactive and soft for a metal (though harder than lead, it can be cut with a knife with difficulty). In bulk-form (typically as chips or "turnings") the metal is somewhat difficult to ignite, more so even than magnesium chips; but when lit, the metal burns in air with a brilliant high-intensity orange-red light. Calcium metal reacts with water, producing hydrogen gas at a rate rapid enough to be noticeable, but not fast enough at room temperature to generate much heat. In powdered form, however, the reaction with water is extremely rapid, as the increased surface area of the powder accelerates the reaction with the water.

Calcium is an important component of a healthy diet and a mineral necessary for life. Calcium plays an important role in building stronger, denser bones early in life and keeping bones strong and healthy later in life.Approximately 99 percent of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth.

Name: Micajah A. Branke
Age: Twenty-three.
Magic Affinity: Micajah's magic is not what you would initially think useful for a scientist. He can create magical 'mines' which, when triggered, either explode, trap, or sedate the thing tripping them. Clearly none of these things come is particular use in a laboratory - but Micajah isn't a stereotypical laboratory based kind of scientist. Creating these mines takes focus, energy, time and an item to fix the mine to. The item does not have to be special in any way - a small rock would suffice - however, the size of the thing he is affixing his magic to does dictate the strength of the effect of the mine. For example, the aforementioned small rock would probably produce a small stunning explosion, whereas a tree stump could probably create a moderately sized crater. Obviously, larger mines take more time to set up and require more energy and exertion. When Micajah is creating a mine his aether twists around his hands in tendrils, moving over the object he is imbuing with the magic and sinking underneath it's surface. During this set up time Micajah cannot be disturbed otherwise his connection with the object will be broken and the mine won't be set properly, either causing it to be exceedingly weak or for it not to be triggered at all. The three different types of mine that Micajah can make produce different colourations and mildly different behaviours in his aether when he is setting them up. Explosive mines make coral red aether and the tendrils are slightly more geometric and irrational in their movement. When explosive mines are triggered they flash brightly and expel the energy trapped in them in all directions - there is no fire involved in them and the explosion cannot cause burns.. Trapping mines make Micajah's aether teal and the tendrils of his magic are the most graceful when he is making this type of mine; snaking and curling around each other and the object being imbued. When tripped, trapping mines expel a large bubble of teal coloured energy. This congeals around the thing that has tripped the mine, pulling itself into thin but sturdy bands which ensnare the limbs of the creature preventing them from moving easily. Finally, sedation mines produce a purple colouration and Micajah's tendril-like aether spiral and loop, forming many circular shapes over the object. When they are triggered they release a violet miasma that sedates any living creature within the blast radius. (Although bigger creatures may not be fully effected by smaller mines and will experience nausea and drowsiness as opposed to full sedation.)
Appearance: Micajah can usually be spotted from a distance by looking out for some kind of human/bush hybrid, with just a little dash of grime. Being so interested in nature Micajah spends a huge amount of time outdoors, studying his subjects in their natural habitat and keeping up appearances is the least of his worries - a little dirt here and their only helps to mask your scent after all, allowing for even closer observation! Fortunately Micajah’s general exuberance and perhaps slightly clichéd ‘mad professor’ hair, which refuses to bend to the will of any comb or brush and is often tangled with leafy debris, manages to make him avoid looking like a savage, stinky, man-of-the-wild and instead makes him seem quirky and endearing. All over Micajah gives the impression of child-like youthfulness. He stands at a slightly shorter than average height of five-foot, four-inches and has a slim boyish build and a warm, umber skin-tone. His brown eyes are wide, intelligent and friendly. At a glance you would not be to blame for thinking that he is still in his teenage years. Indeed, one of Micajah's teachers at the academy persistently referred to the young adult as a child prodigy, much to Micajah's annoyance. As a result Micajah was prompted into growing a moustache in an attempt to amp up his masculinity. However, his facial hair does little to make him appear any more adult - if anything it makes him just seem more foolish and child-like. Clothes wise Micajah tends to stick to practical hard-wearing clothing when in the field and in his leisure time he'll stick to old favourites - often baggy and well loved. He scrubs up a little when working in the laboratory, pushing back his hair as best possible with bandanas or headbands and donning a worn yet comfortable lab coat, but compared to many fellow scientists he still seems pretty informal and it wouldn't be the first time that he has been scolded being too relaxed in the lab.
Personality:A scientist to the core, one of Micajah's defining characteristics is his desire to learn. His area of specific interest is the natural world - he is fascinated by the workings of animals and plants and could spend all his time in the field happily jotting down new observations. However, his curious nature is not solely constrained to flora and fauna, even in everyday life he likes to be in the know. He'll be the first person to inquire about your life: your name, your interests, who your parents are, what you're doing. To some this can come across as nosey or rude, however it is never intended in this manner - he is by no means a malignant character who would use any of this information to his own gain. Rather he is simply honestly interested in you and would like to know more. One slightly negative flipside to this trait is the fact that Micajah judges people quite rapidly; slotting individuals quikly into those he likes, and those he doesn't.

His inquisitive nature ties quite closely into another key element of Micajah's personality - his immaturity. Children too are very curious about the world, putting their sticky fingers over everything in their quest to explore and Micajah is much the same. Unfortunately curiosity can kill the cat and more than once has Micajah put himself in a sticky situation because 'he just wanted to work out something'. In addition to this he can be quite naive at times: he takes what people say at face value and often gets a little stroppy if he is duped into believing something that isn't necessarily true. Furthermore he has a youth exuberance about him and almost limitless energy. Whereas his guardian tends to be quiet and reserved, Micajah will happily dominate a conversation and bounce around full of excitement. That's not to say he cannot be professional and adult, but his natural persona is slightly more spring loaded than the average joe.

Perhaps coming hand in hand with this excitable personality is Micajah's flexibility and how easy he finds it to adapt to sticky situations. A childish inventiveness is one of the young biologist's strong points as he can think outside the box and doesn't overcomplicate matters. Furthermore his dual heritage means he has two schools of thought to draw from. If a scientific approach isn't working he can learn on the values preached by his Alchemist mother. Indeed family is very close to Micajah's heart. Both of his parents have helped shape him, even if they didn't necessarily always understand him, and he places them (and his younger brother) very high up on his list of priorities. Ichnaea is simply an extension of his family unit and ay close friends quickly get welcomed into the Branke fold.

History: Micajah is of dual heritage, his mother being a member of the homunculi faction and his father the machine faction. As a result of their mixed parenting and influence he is an interesting blend of perhaps the stereotypical traits one might apply to the people of each faction.

From his father he gained the scientist's desire for knowledge and understanding, a trait that was one of the first things about him that became clear. Micajah's first word - to the mild horror of his mother - was "why", shortly followed by "how", "what" and other questioning words; rather than cooing over the names of the objects he loved, he pried into their workings and reasons, a trait that only expanded as he grew older. However, despite his father often trying to show him the intricate workings of the gadgets and gizmos that he constructed for his job he found that he simply could not capture the boy's interest... Instead of beaming as he saw cogs and screws working together and making animatronic life, he marvelled at petals unfurling from tightly budded flowers and ants marching in neat order along branches.

Evidently this love of all things natural was credited to his mother. Whilst she did not hold any particularly important position within the alchemic circles, unlike her partner; a well-known tinkerer, she filled the house with flora - to the point where even the clean and highly polished personal workroom of her husband featured one or two lovingly grown plants. When she realised that her son loved the outside world just as much as she, she exposed him to it as much as possible. Though until he began to grow into himself and explain his personal scientific relationship with nature more fluently it still bothered her that rather than being in awe of the sheer beauty of their recovering earth he would pry and try to work out just why it all happened.

When Micajah was reaching his teenage years he boldly told his parents his dreams in life. He wanted to be a biologist; he wanted to know how organic things worked and behaved, they were like machines - with individual and intricate parts that worked together to produce an amazing functional being. His parents were confused. Did he mean a medic? Understanding of the human anatomy was indeed useful and they would be more than happy to see him help people in such a way. Yet his insistence of wanting to know how nature itself worked - the plants and the animals - confused them for years to come until finally his success within the academy resulted in a personal recommendation from a senior biologist for Micajah to get a guardian.

Ichnaea was created just after Micajah's twentieth birthday, three years after becoming an apprentice. The guardian was mainly given to him so that he would be better equipped to study in the field. His teachers often found that Micajah's talents were wasted on close laboratory study and felt that his keen eye and passion for discovery would make him perfectly suited for working alongside scouts and warriors outside of the city - noting down the fauna and flora that was bound to be discovered on recovered areas.

Since then the spritely young scientist and his companion have helped map the wildlife of the two main islands quite extensively and have started to look further afield, eager to discover what lies beyond the edge of the known map in the lost world.

Micajah's family live in a converted boat in the dry docks. Once used as a merchant ship, Mercuralia is a large vessel that is well built and spacious, with more than enough room for the Branke family. It was quite a profitable ship in its day, specialising in carrying expensive spices, fabrics and other luxuries all over Zoama. However, it's life on the sea was tragically ended by the sundering - at some point or another it was driven aground by cruel tides and its hull was torn asunder by pounding waves. The damage was enough to render it unprofitable to attempt to fix her and her owner left her beached and uncared for - favouring less damaged or newly built ships. After all, in the post-sundering world there was little need for fine trading ships when rebuilding the fractured world was the most important thing... Although luckily for Mercuralia the conversion and habitation of damaged vessels quickly became a popular venture in Mistwick as the dry docks blossomed and the newly wedded Mr and Mrs Branke spent the first few years of their relationship restoring the beautiful ship to her former glory.

Built from rich golden brown oak wood, the converted Mercuralia has a constant cosy and homely feel to it. The main hold is used as the main living and dining area. Wide windows have been added, looking out onto the edge of the docks - there are great sunset views - and warm red curtains frame them and can be closed to keep in heat or give the room some privacy. The Branke's have a fairly eclectic taste in decorations thanks to the dual heritage nature of the family, yet they have stayed fairly true to their home's origins as a merchant ship. Nautical themed objects are scattered around the place and richly patterned rugs provide soft treading underfoot. The original kitchen and eating space for the crew has been kept, although obviously have been made suited to home cooking as opposed to the minimal cooking that used to be done out at sea. A portion of the old crew's quarters have been made into bedrooms (a large master room for Micajah's parents, a medium room for Micajah, and one of the two smaller rooms belongs to his younger brother - the other is a spare room) whilst the remaining space has been converted into a working space for Micajah and his father's scientific interests. The top deck is used as a space for growing vegetables and floral plants. Mrs. Branke spends the majority of her time here and when the weather is pleasant the family do like to sit in the sunshine reading and relaxing, or, if they're feeling especially social enjoying a barbeque with friends.
