The soles of his shoes squeaking on the shiny vinyl floor, Jayke slowly walked down an aisle of the modestly sized pet store, bypassing the colorful toys, ridiculously expensive medicines, and bags of dog 'cookies' that looked a little too much like real cookies in favor of aisles that actually featured PETS. Rats putting their tiny pink noses up as though to sniff him through the glass. Birds that cheeped and squawked greetings and the woes of so many competing voices at him as he walked past. Tarantulas that merely saw him as just another huge, ugly face peering at them from between a pane that they could not climb up to terrorize them away. He loved coming to a place like this; he couldn't come when he was cutting classes in case a policeman happened by the window and saw him, but he was at least glad that none but the stupidest of kids would try to hurt an animal at a pet store.

Kali smiled as she opened the door to the pet store the bell chiming to alert the staff that a customer had come in. Moving deeper into the store she headed into the supply area wondering if she should get some cat food, it wasn’t what she came for but the brand she used was on sale and considering how expensive it was at full price it was a good idea. Grabbing a bag of treats on the shelf above the food she decided it would be better to grab it right before she left instead of carrying it the whole time she was in the store, which with her being her meant that it could be a while before she left the store. She had been moving to the isle that had what she had come for when she heard some kitten start mewing and turning around she headed towards them.

Heels clicked sharply against the laminated floor of the pet shop as Koorie strode purposfully through the isles. Her naturally curly hair was pulled up into a ponytail, and she sported a jean mini skirt and a button up tank top. Her purse was slung over her shoulder and her red eyes glided over the contents of the catfood isle she walked down as she headed to the live animals in the back. It was time to get some food for Monty again. Passing through the glass windows, she stopped in front of the rats and leaned down, scanning to see which ones she'd take back.

Jayke paused as he heard the sound of a mewling kitten, a small smile stealing its way onto his face. Most people saw cute little balls of fur when they saw cats and kittens at a pet store; Jayke liked to fantasize about them growing up to be large, powerful predators and taking over the city, turning it into a literal urban jungle. Or perhaps he could pull a move his foster parents would be proud of and open every cage he could reach, freeing the animals and causing a panic. He almost considered it, but remembered that the creatures in here tended to be too used to being fed and taken care of; they might not survive on their own.
He walked over in the direction of the mewling until he was leaning down and facing a truly ferocious specimen; a tiny orange kitten with a mew loud enough to carry two aisles down. Jayke beamed at the tiny paw that batted the cage bars; if he was this vocal now, when he grew up, his meow would probably rival a tiger's.

Kali grinned as she saws the kitten that had been mewing it was absolutely adorable. Sticking one of her fingers through the bars she petted him “I bet your going to be ferocious when you grow up. I bet all the mice and rats are going to flee in terror the moment they see you.” She laughed softly watching him as he chewed lightly on her finger before licking it and mewing again. "I guess your lonely, hopefully a nice person will buy you soon. Then you'll have lots of fun."
She hoped that the kitten would find a good home some people didn't realize just how smart cats could be. One of her cat's had already figured out how to open doors. Noticing the boy next to her she turned slightly trying to face him while absentmindedly petting the kitten “He’s got a good set of lungs huh?”

The crying of the kitten drifted through the next couple of isles, and Koorie felt her lips twitch a little into a frown. After a few more pathetic cries, the girl gave up on trying to concentrate on the rats and instead went to see what was wrong with that kitten. It was making one heck of a ruckus.
Turning into the isle, she halted abruptly, seeing that two other kids were already in front of the cages. Silently, she watched them, her eyes judging and calculating .

Not even noticing the girl until she spoke to him, Jayke turned his head to regard her. He wasn't the friendliest person, but most of his interactions happened against his will, such as being in school and having himself reminded time and time again that because his previous schooling had been unorthodox he was regarded as a little slow. Here at least any interaction was on his own terms. Besides, she didn't look much like the type he had come to hate; stupid, spoiled apes who hurt animals and acted as though they were the lords of nature.
He nodded and managed to keep the smile on his face."He does. I think he fancies himself a tiger; he'll be a handful to whoever adopts him. But then again, people should expect that; kittens are so curious and playful. It's unreasonable to expect a kitten to be completely well-behaved like some Von Trapp kid!" He knew he was rambling and probably scaring the person he was talking to, but he so hated to keep his thoughts bottled up. At home he was always encouraged to speak his mind, and he had to stifle it so often in school, or he'd miss half of his classes with visits to the principal.

Kali nodded in agreement. “I think he’s working on his roar." she giggled slightly imagining a tigers roar coming out of the tiny kitten. "I agree I don’t understand how some people can be so stupid, they adopt an animal thinking it’s going to be calm all the time or they don’t realize just how big it will get. Then they decide they can’t handle it anymore and get rid of it.” She sighed annoyed “Don’t they realize that animals don’t just sit there and look pretty? They have personalities too. Just because the breed is normally calm doesn’t mean that your pet will be." Some people really need to be slapped upside their head ... or worse.

Koorie stepped up behind the other two, looking at the kitten they were talking about. "Generally, people like that tend to have a lack of maturity or compassion; they make their decisions on the drop of a dime without even realizing how it's going to effect themselves and others in the long run." She paused for a moment before continuing on.
"Then there are those who are simply mentally ill and don't realize what they're doing. These tend to be the hording types who keep their animals in generally unfit conditions with limited room to move." Her red eyes didn't even bother to make contact with either of the two kids, even though she spoke to them.

Jayke honestly didn't know what to make of his situation, or how it had suddenly come to this; being surrounded by two girls that he didn't know, and having a conversation with them that didn't involve them thinking he was slow and dull. He hadn't had this much friendly interaction since......well he couldn't even remember. He usually avoided such social interaction, but he was actually finding it rather nice. At least they seemed to get where he was coming from with his righteous indignation of the mistreatment of animals.
"Lots of animals can break the stereotype of their kind, same as people. In fact, if you treat an animal with the same respect as a person, you usually manage to avoid any kind of mistreatment, like the whole hoarding thing." He nodded to the other, more seemingly reserved girl. "One wouldn't hoard a bunch of children in a house; it should be the same with animals. If someone did an investigation and found someone keeping a bunch of kids in squalor, they'd get their a** carted off to jail. But then if it's a bunch of tiny kittens, so starved they end up eating each other, why it's treated like some kind of misunderstanding." Jayke didn't have a lot of sympathy for those who would mistreat animals, mentally unfit or no. Even if it was not the fault of that person directly, SOMETHING could always be done to prevent such a thing from happening.
Seeing the other girl still so distant, Jayke turned and offered a bigger smile to the first. "Good to know there are some people in this city with heads on their shoulders." He offered an elongated nod, more like a short bow, to the first girl. "My name's Jayke."

Kali nodded "Animals are people to. Just because we cant understand what their say doesn't me they don't understand us." She wave to the new girl. "I agree animal cruelty laws need to be more severe." She smiled back a Jayke. "I'm Kali" She smiled at Koorie. "it's nice ot meet you guys" she paused for a moment. "I wonder if part of it is the fact that you don't really see many cops that focus on animal abuse around so people think they can get away with it."
