History and Mythology The constellation of the Scales (in Babylonian MUL Zibanu) were known in Babylonia where it is used as an alternative name for the Claws of the Scorpion. The Scales were held sacred to the Sun God Shamash, who was also the patron of truth and justice. Since these times, Libra has been represented intrinsically with law, fairness and civility, as the scales were commonplace in the livelihood of the people, throughout the ages. The symbol for Libra is the Scales, making it the only zodiac sign of which the symbol is not a living creature. In Roman mythology, Libra is considered to depict the scales held by Astraea (identified as Virgo), the goddess of justice. In Arabic zubānā means "scorpion's claws", and likely similarly in other Semitic languages: this resemblance of words may be why the Scorpion's claws became the Scales. Astrology Libra (♎) is the seventh astrological sign in the zodiac, originating from the constellation of Libra. In astrology, Libra is considered a "masculine", positive (extrovert) sign. It is also considered an air sign and is one of four cardinal signs. Libra is ruled by the planet Venus (which also rules Taurus). Individuals born when the Sun was in this sign are considered Libra individuals. Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun enters Libra on the moment of autumnal equinox by definition on September 23, leaving it on October 22. Divination - Crystal TarotWritten by oceantailThis issue we are doing something a little different. We will be comparing the crystal tarot, as explained in Scott Cunningham's Encyclopaedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic, to the crystal divination in Judy Hall's The Crystal Bible. These will demonstrate the differences and similarities between two seemingly similar divination practices. The first difference one comes across is that Cunningham states that you will require all of the crystals (or at least one to represent each card) before you can perform the divination, yet Hall doesn't specifically cover this. Reasons for this are perhaps that Cunningham is basing the divination on the already existing tarot, whereas Hall seems to include this as simply additional information about how crystals can be used. Continuing on this track, Cunningham also gives specific instructions on how to prepare this tool for use. Cunningham 48 Obtain all twenty-two stones (You cannot work this magical tool without the full number) and cleanse each. If there are any unfamiliar to you, work with them... until you know their symbolism and magical uses” . Hall gives much less specific instructions. Hall 375 For a quick answer to a question, place a selection of the crystals... in a bag. Concentrate on your question. Pick out a crystal at random; look at the meanings associated with that crystal to find your answer Although the methods simply are the act of drawing stones from a bag and gleaning insight from it, upon closer inspection one can see the many differences between them. The two divination methods both uses precious and semi-precious stones. This means that there will be some identical stones used in both methods, whose meaning could differ either greatly or very little. Emerald is one such stone. In Hall's method drawing an emerald from the bag means Hall 375 Fertility a secret admirer. If the color pales love is fading In Cunningham's method the emerald represents the High Priestess representing, Cunningham 50 Spirituality, secrets, power, Earth religion... In both methods rose quartz represents love. There are many more comparisons that can be drawn between the two methods medium, but that could be an article in and of itself. Divination is a vast topic, even when two practices seem similar there can be oceans of differences between them. Hall and Cunningham's methods are just two of the family of divination known as Crystallomancy (divination through the medium of crystals). There are members of this divinatory family that date back to ancient Babylon. This article hopefully gives you scope on how massive a topic divination is and how seemingly identical practices can have such immense differences. Sources: Cunningham, Scott. Gods & Goddesses - BrighidWritten by lifeaura The goddess Brighid is a goddess of the Celtic pantheon who assumes many roles in lore. She is a triple goddess of the inspirational fire that leads to poetry; of the hearth which brings forth healing and fertility; and of the forge as a patroness of smithing. Additionally, she is associated with many names including Brigid, Brigit, Brigantia, Brid, and Bride. The word Brighid itself means “one who exalts herself.” Her husband is Bres, an Irish-Celtic god of fertility and agriculture. The holiday along the wheel of the year associated with Brighid is the holiday of Imbolc. In the world of the Celtic people, fire was the only thing they could truly control in order to warm themselves in the cold, thus making Brighid important as she was the deity reining over the element. Since reaching the time of Imbolc was a herald that better times were coming soon in the spring along with the fact birthing ewes and cows could now provide milk that could feed the people, the Celts would honor the maiden aspect of Brigid in celebration through corn dollies and offerings of milk. Later, Brighid became Christianized in Ireland and worship for her continued with her guise as a saint. Her mythos became such that she was said to be the foster mother of Christ. She also has a cathedral dedicated to her in the town of Kildare, Ireland. The site where the church was built had originally been built at a site where 19 priestesses of Brighid had continuously kept a flame burning in honor of the goddess. The order of nuns which formed around her became the keep of the flame in the Christian era of Ireland and continued the tradition of kindling the fire in her honor.
