There is life outside of your apartment. There should have been puppets around her singing bars of the song from Avenue Q. They'd be cheerfully reminding her that life goes on and that the sun shines again every morning and no bad thing lasts forever.

Not that Kyn would know that recently. With Harmony missing and the entire town in an uproar about the mass kidnappings Kyn really only stepped out of her house to go to work and come home again. There was no pep in her step or a will to be her usual upbeat self. Though Tony helped her when he could he was surprisingly absent much of the time and, well, Kyndall was turning into a loner.

Right now she was staring at the ticket she had to an art auction in town. She'd been planning on going for months but now that the day was here she was a little iffy. It didn't feel right to go out and pretend to be having fun while Harmony was out there somewhere, missing. Tony told her he believed Harmony was alive and she tried to focus on that but something inside her twisted when she thought of her little girl. She closed her eyes. This was for a good cause, for the Arts Foundation in Destiny City. Helping them helped herself, keeping money in the school system for arts education, thus keeping her in a job. Not to go would be bad form, though everyone knew of her predicament by now.

So she got up, showered, put on a cute dress and went to the event determined to put on a brave face and bid on a few pieces. She felt out of place the moment she arrived but she stayed, determined to see things through. God, she needed a drink!

Able-May had been going since 4 AM that very morning. Her mother had been on the planning committee for an event to help bring more awareness to the dire situation known as the public arts program and had, immediately, brought her daughter on to help coordinate the gallery showroom and auction. Not that the young woman had any intentions of declining the request. Able-May was cut from precisely the same cloth as her Mother and that cloth was the comforting wrap of charity and good samaritanship.

That was two months ago. Now, now, things were more stressful then she'd anticipated. Several sponsors had backed out in order to throw more money towards finding their missing loved ones, her assistant had quit and now she had no one to help her keep organized, and this morning there'd been a spider the size of a quarter in her shower.

She'd showered at her father's office, and she knew it showed.

Fingering the sliver cross about her neck she took in a deep breath and nervously glanced about the reception hall. She'd delegated her more miniscule tasks to other volunteers and was now standing and greeting those that could make it to the night's event.

Sighing, she placed a single hand on a hip and glanced sideways at the room with the hors dourvs and open bar. She needed a drink so badly.

Kyndall looked around, finding faces she knew and faces she wasn't as familiar with. Most of the ones from her school, the ones who knew her, gave that "I'm so sorry" look that she just couldn't stand any longer. What those looks really said to her was "I'm glad it wasn't me." How many of them knew what kind of pain she was feeling or how hard it was to have her own flesh and blood simply taken from her with little or no explanation. Could they even imagine? Of course they couldn't. They were safe in the knowledge that things like this happened on the outskirts of their lives and never in the middle of them.

Kyndall traveled over to the bar and to her dismay found they were only serving wine and champagne. Neither of which were strong enough or worked fast enough to dull her sense of dread. She took a glass anyway, downed it, and then took another. She didn't care how it looked to anyone on the outside. This was the most care she'd taken with herself in weeks. She was here. She was dressed and trying to force a smile to her lips. Wasn't that enough?

She took a few sips from her glass, not straying far from the bar yet. She didn’t want to just incase more liquid courage was needed. Some of the paintings were decent. She found the two she’d actually bid on for the right price.

The number of new people coming through the main entrance doors was dwindling and the silent auction underway, Able-May let her strained smile fade as she wandered to the bar she'd just been eyeing. There weren't many at the bar, but a few of the patrons that only came to events such as this to drink and make fools of themselves and a woman with the prettiest green waves of hair she'd ever seen.
Drinking wine in the fastest manner she'd ever seen.
The woman had the look of a harried woman, someone trying to escape something, and though Able-May had seen it often she was shocked to see it on someone who otherwise looked so healthy.
Fixing a smile to her lips, easier this time then the one she'd been wearing to greet people, she placed herself next to the other woman.

"They've got harder stuff in the back if you need it." Everyone needed it sometime. Able-May sure needed it.

"You are my new best friend." Kyndall said meaningfully as she gazed at her tattooed companion.

She didn't mind tattoos, they just simply weren't for her. She had always debated getting one in honor of her sister Syndall but had never settled on what it would be or where. And she wasn't the world's biggest fan of needles. Maybe someday if she were feeling more confident, or possibly drunk, she'd do it.

Right now she'd just settle for intoxicated.

It was hard to believe how her time was passing, meticulously slow and half stepped. Every moment seemed to echo that she didn't have Harmony and that her child was out in the world alone and scared and possibly at the hands of a psycho or worse - dead. Though Tony seemed much more confident about Harmony's safety than she was she couldn't banish the internal motherly fears she had inside. He didn't know for sure. No one did. People deluded themselves for lifetimes on false hope. She couldn't be one of them. If she was and Harmony never came home she'd be crushed that much more. Her heart couldn't take that and neither could her mind. Thus, the constant and strong call for liquor.

"Please, lead the way. You look like you could use something as well."

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

"You have no idea," Able-May answered with a laugh. Of course by the looks of the other woman she probably had a very good idea, the tattoo artist said it anyway with an offer of her arm. "If you promise to stay by my side for the rest of the night and keep the awful mayor's son at a distance you're my new best friend too." She was also deadly sincere. There was nothing that could ruin a good night faster than getting cornered by the world's most selfish and entitled brat of a grown man.

Leading the woman around the bar and into the kitchens, she escorted her to where all the good booze was. Waving off kitchen staff with a wink the impromptu private hostess opened a bottle of Jack and snagged two small glasses. "Name's Able-May, it's nice to meet you." Pouring one glass to the brim, she looked up at her new friend. "This good or do you want something else? The whole lot of it is yours for the night."

"Someone rather recently assumed me a lesbian. Perhaps I put off the vibe. You might be safe so long as you're with me."

The Jack Daniels looked positively inviting. Kyndall could count the number of times she'd been drunk on one hand with her child to raise but occasionally she just had to let go. With the current situation she gathered tonight was a good night for it. She could not be bothered by coworkers, superiors, or uppity spoiled rich boys who tried to pass themselves off as men. The drunker she was the better able she'd be to express that thought.

"Screw best friend." she amended, taking the bottle and pouring herself a good inch in the bottom of the tumbler. "You're a saint."

Sad to say that inch would be clearly enough to get her healthily buzzed. She drowned it before she could give herself a second thought. Soon enough it'd kick in with her thin frame. She studied Able-May and smiled genuinely for the first time in a long while.

"I'm Kyndall. Kyndall Rosen. I work for Crystal Academy as the teacher of Dramatics."

Grinning from ear to ear, she shook her head as she downed her glass of Jack in one go. It wasn't often Able-May got drunk either, but getting drunk and having a glass of something with dinner every other night were two totally different things. She was a single woman living with a man that she would never sleep with because he was a man. Screw having to look out for anyone else. "Kyndall is a very pretty name, Ms. Rosen."

The fact that Kyndall was a drama teacher at what was also her alma mater was inspiring and wonderful to the purple haired woman and at the same time made her jealous of all of those girls her new friend was teaching. She found herself wistfully wondering what school life would have been like for her if the drama teacher back then had been half as good looking ... But that was not an appropriate fantasy to have with the woman herself standing right there.

Calming any chance of blushing like a sixteen year old, Able-May placed her hand on her cross and in her best southern belle voice pretended to be shocked and appalled. "Blasphemy, my dear lady! I am but a humble woman with sins like anybody else." Taking her hand down she giggled and poured herself another drink. She wasn't joking entirely, her faith never was a joke to her, but Kyndall's statement had not been serious either and she was always one to play along.

Unless it was disgusting pig-boys trying to feel you up because he had money and wanted to treat you like whore... And while that thought settled itself into her head she placed her hand on her new friend's arm gently. "I didn't get the lesbian vibe off of you at all, but I think we'll be safe so long as we're together." It was both a thank you and a plea for the chance to get to hit on at least one woman during the night.

"Call me Kyndall, please."

She didn't have Miss Able-May's problem of men drooling on her like she's the first cut of meat from a fresh kill. In fact, she was mostly ignorant if anyone looked at her that way as her eyes only seemed to be able to focus on Tony Darrow as of late. She knew he had a girlfriend and was unattainable and her heart still went annoyingly pitter pat when he was around just to spite her. Figures that the first time she'd really crush on someone in ages happened to be someone devastatingly handsome, smart, and sweet...and taken.

At least he wasn't gay.

"Well, the curator of the local Plantarium seems to disagree with you." she laughed, swirling the amber liquid around her glass and laughing to herself at Iouri's mistake. It had been, at the time, very funny to her. "He assumed my daughter was my lover. What a notion!"

When Able-May's hand came to rest on her arm she shrugged happily and took a healthy swig from her drink. It took very little to make her tipsy and it seemed Miss Rosen intended to get there at least. Perhaps even into a full on buzz. Even without the benefit of alcohol she still wanted to spend time getting to know her new friend which meant staying with her throughout the benefit and talking to her now.

"Kyndall it is then!" She stopped herself from pouring any more of the jack into her glass and blinked as the buzz started to settle into her skull. She felt light and giddy and fuzzy ... It was a nice, healthy, sort of tipsy. One that made her cheeks feel hot even if they weren't. She even laughed at the idea that Iouri would make such a mistake but shook her head anyway.

"That's okay," she said very honestly, "it takes most people several conversations to figure out that I am a lesbian." But not this time apparently! The cat was out of the bag and as she said it her eyebrows furrowed and she blushed instantly. What if Kyndall was one of those people and she was going to hate her forever and ever? Among the thoughts of horror and embarrassment, however, one thought rang out louder than the others and made it out of her mouth before she could stop it- "But I'd never date my mother. She'd be lousy in bed."

Yup. That's what she got out of the conversation. Go her.
