Welcome to the Metal Gear Solid discussion thread on Gamer Girls! Metal Gear (メタルギア Metaru Gia?) is a series of stealth video games created by Hideo Kojima and developed and published by Konami. The first game, Metal Gear, was released in 1987 for the MSX2. The player takes control of a special forces operative Solid Snake who is assigned to find the eponymous superweapon "Metal Gear", a bipedal walking tank with the ability to launch nuclear weapons. Several sequels have been released for multiple consoles after requests from Konami to produce new Metal Gear games. The sequels expand the original game's plot adding new characters opposing and supporting Snake, while there have also been a few prequels exploring the origins from the Metal Gear and recurring characters. Various parts were inspired by Hollywood films with character's names, settings and artworks often referencing them.
The series is famous for pioneering the stealth game genre, in which the character initially has only one weapon and has to go through the game to accomplish his mission by himself. Other notable traits are cinematic cut scenes, intricate storylines, offbeat humor and exploration of political and philosophical themes. The franchise has sold over 30 million copies of games worldwide, with various of them being critically acclaimed by gaming critics to the point of gaining awards as one of the best games of their years. The franchise has also been adapted into other media such as comics and drama CDs. [[turned into a sticky with some info, ~veroonie~]]

I played up to the first boss fight of Metal Gear solid: Twin Snakes. Then I started playing LoZ: Wind Waker. I swear to God, the first part of the Forbidden Fortress IS the Shadow Moses facility. You come out of the water, unarmed. Once you get to a higher area, there are spotlights scanning the area. Once inside, there are guards patrolling that can be fooled with a simple disguise of an inanimate object (Boxes and barrels, respectively). You must disable several security features to get to the jail cell where a girl is held captive and attempt to release her. THEN it starts to deviate a bit.

You know how the "cool thing" last year was for game companies to remake super-old classics into new games? One of the few series that NEED this is Metal Gear. Really, Metal Gear 2, specifically, is so instrumental to the series that it CAN'T be missed, but its so old that its practically unplayable by modern standards! I think that Kojima needs to remake Metal Gear and MG2 as one game, with the new controls and graphics.
Mostly because I REALLY want to see how Solid Snake beats freakin' BIG BOSS with a improvised flamethrower, when he killed The Fury with a K-BAR knife and a few flashbangs.
But I'll still be happy with playing the Bishi-turned-ninja and cutting bullets out of the air in Rising.

What where the old Metal Gear games released on? Would it be part of the "Super Classic" era?

I havent been here for the longest time, but I played the entire main series of Metal Gear Solid end-to-end. Let me just say: Hell's yes I'm a fan. The last two in the numbered series (3 and 4) are really the coolest ones, but you need to at least watch the cutscenes from the first two to know what the hell is going on in 4 and get most of the jokes in 3. But now theres Rising. I started to love him when he stopped being a sissy in MGS4, but after the trailer, I really just developed a really twisted crush on Raiden. Asskicking commences. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SNo8h-KfAU&feature=share*Maniacal laughter in response to Raiden throwing the Metal Gear*

Wow, this is a really dead thread.
I just introduced one of my guy friends to Metal Gear Solid 4. He sucks at playing games, so I had the controller and just did what he was telling me to do. He's the kind of person who complains that your being a jerk when you kill everyone, and can't play games like Halo because he's such a pacifist.
Act 1 caused him to order me to headshot a particular PMC trooper.
This game makes you think.

Dead thread? I don't care. I love the series. Metal Gear Solid 4 I loved for the fact that it was meant to tie up every loose end possible and did quite a job at it, bringing in characters I didn't even know about since I didn't play the first one yet. I downloaded the first game from the PSN afterwards. Gawd I hated having to mash that button to survive Ocelot's torture my arm hurt so bad afterward ;-; MGS3 I liked cause it took place outside of some super secret facility and actually got to hunt for food. Even the fact that you had to heal your own wounds manually. I once got an arrow stuck vertically in my head in the game and actually left it there for so long the damage was undone and the arrow was permanent XD. MGS2 was the bottom of the four main games for me but I still liked it. But getting past all those Metal Gear RAYS on hard mode crying I never even managed it. That part where Solidus comes win with his apparently so special SMG and doesn't even break a sweat when he renders those RAYS inoperable. And you spent 10-30+ minutes taking at lest seven of them down with nothing but the stinger missile. that was just WTF?! revenge was sweet in the end for making Raiden look bad. And then he returns in MGS4 and kills 15 (I counted) Metal Gear GEKKO's. Raiden is most certainly my favourite and that is why I pre ordered Rising. But I prefer his look in MGS4 I hope there will be a way to change it like in some games.
