Colette stepped into the impressive Indoor Gym with a sense of awe. "It's perfect," she said over her should to Danny, distracted. "I've heard things about the Gym.." Colette stood at the edge of the pool and looked down at it for a moment before crouching and reaching to touch the water. Her hand was forcibly stopped as if there were just the rest of the floor. "Yep. Just as they said," 'they' being some Y3s she overheard, "The pool really is locked down." She fearlessly took a step forward and stood upon the Fear-made shield covering the pool. "No way in! C'mon."
Going farther in above the pool, she stopped towards the center and turned to Danny. "You know, that field trip is coming up..." Colette didn't want to go over the awful tales of the field trips she experienced and scare Danny, if that was even possible compared to the pool below, but she wanted the ghoul to be prepared. "Have you ever, uh.. gotten into a fight before? A real one? I think it'd be good to just practice. For both of us."
Colette did a couple of short and simple stretches before she summoned her weapons and smiled. "Would you rather take a swing first, or should I?"

In this post, I've rolled 1d20 (one 20-sided die) to see which of us will go first. The highest roll goes first.
This is not mandatory and just a simple solution if players are unsure of who is ICly faster or cannot come to a decision of who will go first.

Danny had simply followed Colette in, not really aware that there could actually be anything dangerous in the gym. Looking around, she saw a pool (she was definitely avoiding that), an arena, gym equipment ... it was impressive, really!
Danny had found her home.
Hesitantly, she followed Colette around the pool, and onto the invisible shield covering of the pool. Danny hadn't yet noticed that the pool was filled with water. For now it just looked like a neat flooring- Amityville was filled with odd things like that anyways, right?
"I like fighting!" she said, perhaps a bit louder than she should have. She took a fighter's stance (or at least what she thought was one) and waited with a goofy smile on her face. Her tail flickered back and forth, ready to fight.- - - - - - I rolled 1 d20 to decide who would go first. Whoever has the highest die goes first.
Because we both rolled a one (and tied), we decided OOCly that Colette would go first, through PM.

Quirking an eyebrow, Colette looked at Danny and wondered if she was playing around or taking this seriously. And even if she was willing to fight, the ghoul didn't happen to answer her question. "Well, I guess I'll go first," Colette answered herself as she started to move.
As a Reaper with swords, Colette needed to be close and didn't hesitate to take run up to Danny with a srs face expression; but as she got closer, she didn't slow down... "If you like fighting, then this should go well, right?" Instead of stopping to take a swing, Colette shoved into Danny as go-easy starting attack and would be pleased if it managed to knock her over too.
If Danny had been thinking lightly of fighting, Colette was sure of herself that the ghoul wasn't now.
Target: Danny Damage: 3 HP: 40/40 Effect: N/A- - - - - -
In this turn, Colette is attacking so I roll dice based on her IC year. Colette is a Y2, so I rolled 2d8 (two 8-sided die). You can find your student's dice mechanics here.
To determine if it hit or missed, I took the total and subtracted six. 9 - 6 = 3. Three is greater than zero, so Colette hit for that much damage. If it had equaled zero or less, her attack would have missed and cause no damage!
* See that form up there? The one with 'target,' 'damage,' etc? That must be included at the bottom of every post during combat so your opponent can easily tell how much damage was done, your leftover HP, who you're targeting, and what effects you have. Quote: Target: In the case of team battles only. If it's 1v1 or a boss battle, it's pretty obvious who you're targeting and this is not needed. (In this battle, I've included it so you can see how it would be used.) Damage: Subtract 6 from your total. If you are defending, then it will be "Damage Prevented." HP: List your HP pool and keep track of it. Effect: List any effects you suffer here. Did your opponent set you on fire? Did their special Fear attack inflict poison? Use this space to keep track of how many turns you have left on an effect. But wait! HP pool? How do you figure how much your character has? Well, every character has a HP amount based off their rank, much like dice mechanics for attacking. Colette is a Y2, so she has 40 maximum HP that she cannot exceed. You can find your character's maximum HP here.

"Heyyyy," Danny whined. That wasn't fair! Colette couldn't just start the fight without her!
Unfortunately for Colette, fighting was the one thing Danny was legitimately ... competent in. Her eyes narrowed and she prepared to take down the knob with deadly force. Or maybe just average force.
As she was surveying, Colette decided to attack, and Danny was caught off guard. One of Colette's sword nipped Danny's left arm as she dodged left, returning to the place, where the twosome began. Luckily, Danny got a swipe with her claws in before falling, but it really wouldn't do that much damage, especially not to a knob.
Danny hadn't noticed the floor until now, when she was forced to look down at it. Was that ... was that water? No that couldn't be water.
Suddenly the battle had a lot more meaning to it.
Damage: 1 HP: 27/30 Effect: N/A
- - - - - -
Danny is performing a basic attack- she hasn't used her FEAR yet. This is a simple melee attack. You might notice that Colette rolled 2d8, and Danny rolled 2d6- that's because Colette is a y2, and Danny is a y1. She also has less HP for the same reason (y2 and y1 difference). Dice Mechanics and HP linked above in Sally's post.
For the damage she caused, you simply add the two dice and subtract 6. So 5 + 2 = 7, 7 - 6 = 1. One is greater than 0, so she hit for damage. Had it been less than 0, she would have missed.
You'll also notice that Danny's HP dropped from 30 to 27. Colette hit her for 3 damage (as seen above), so she gets damage taken THIS turn. You have to take that and RP it out, for obvious reasons!

Whining? Well Danny didn't like that too much. Colette felt it in the nick from her claws. As Danny fell over, the Reaper looked at the stinging red scratches on her arm.
There's no way I'm getting more of these.
While Danny being on the floor was a good way for Colette to try and get an upper hand and swing at her, that wasn't the reason Colette offered to fight in the first place.
"Okay, here. Get up and take a swing at me."
She switched to a defensive stance and crossed her swords in front of her again to hopefully help shrug off most of whatever Danny was about to throw at her.
Damage Prevented: 2 HP: 39/40 Effect: N/A
- - - - - -
As you can see, just like how Danny's HP decreased, Colette's HP went from 40/40 to 39/40. This is because Danny's attack did one damage to her, and that one damage is subtracted from her HP.
This turn, Colette is defending. The dice are the same as a character's basic attack (so in Colette's case I roll 2d8 because she is a Y2), but instead of doing the calculation for damage caused or missing, this is how much damage is prevented.
So to calculate this turn, we will take the total and subtract six again. 8 - 6 = 2. Two damage of Danny's next attack will be prevented against Colette. The attack before this turn where Danny did one damage has already occurred and is not prevented by this!
Take a look at the form that was covered before. The 'target' section has been removed because it's a 1-on-1 battle and not necessary, but 'damage' has also been changed to 'damage prevented' to reflect defending instead of attacking.

Danny gave Colette a skeptical look. It was obvious that Colette was baiting her, trying to get her to hit her. She was probably going to defend, and then mock the fire demonness for being so gullible. Danny knew all of this too, and was planning her next attack as she stood up.
Odd that she couldn't understand the difference between "plants" and "pants," yet she could figure out battle configuration in a matter of moments. Go figure.
After she stood up, she immediately charged Colette, arm extended with a fireball. The ball completely disintegrated from the rush of air though, and it was gone before she could even get to Colette. She stopped in her tracks, just before hitting Colette, leaving her wide open.
"Uh ohhh..." was all she could muster.
Damage Dealt: 0 HP: 27/30 Effect: N/A.
- - - - - -
Danny has effectively missed in one way or another this attack. Again, total then subtract 6. 1 + 2 = 3, 3 - 6 = -3. Because the number is below 0, it is counted as a miss. This means she does no damage to Colette!
Had Danny's attack NOT missed, then you would subtract another 2 from the total, because Colette defended for that much damage. So if Danny had dealt 4 damage, it would effectively only be "worth" 2 damage.
ALSO, you can totally use natural abilities in battle! These abilities do not use the same mechanics as your characters' FEAR, but instead enhance battle in fun ways. For example, if your character can shrink, maybe they grow smaller to avoid a nasty hit. Get creative!

Danny failed to attack her, and Colette took this second opportunity to attack with a practice of her fear move. A real fight wouldn't allow many slip-ups without repercussions and she knew it wouldn't be fair if she let her free again.
"You've got to keep moving! You can't just slip-up and pause." As Colette said this, she channeled FEAR into her swords and charged at Danny. The swords felt the boost in FEAR, and their otherwise inert eyelids shot closed and flickered open again to reveal red eyes quite similar to Colette's. "Bad things happen that way!" Terribly bad things that get implanted in your memory forever.
Flames enveloped the blades and Colette swung the burning, metal swords at Danny for a successful attack. She didn't expect it to do much against a flame demon, but it had to count for something! Once the damage was done, the swords' eyes lost their red color as they turned white again.
Damage: 1 per Danny's turn for 2 turns. HP: 39/40 Effect: N/A
- - - - - -
In this turn, Colette's fear that falls under The Tainted Fang's description is being used, which requires a different dice roll than a normal attack. All fear dice mechanics are located here.
Because Colette is a Y2 and The Tainted Fang is her Y2 ranked fear, the Y2 mechanics of that fear are being used. I've rolled the 3d4 (three 4-sided dice) required, now let's take a look at the numbers:
According to the mechanics, if the first dice is a 1 or 2 it's a miss, and if it's a 3 or 4 it's a hit. My first number is 3 so it's a successful hit!
Now the second dice represents how much damage is done per turn. I rolled a 1, and according to the mechanics that means the fear attack does 1 damage per turn.
Finally, the third number means how many turns it will last. I've rolled a 2, so it will last 2 turns.
So the results are 1 damage to Danny for 2 of her turns.

As she stumbled, Danny couldn't help but admire Colette's swords. They were so shiny! The eyes were so cuute. They were so ... on fire. Danny was elated.
Wait why were they swinging towards her. Wait she wasn't gonna get hit wi-
The metal clashed against her arm, and left a burning sensation. The fire itself didn't hurt Danny, but the effects of Colette's FEAR did. FEAR was what left such an icky stinging feeling on her arm. Danny had never known what it felt like to be "burned," so she didn't quite have a name to the sensation, but she knew she didn't like it.
"Neat FEAR," she said calmly, almost uncharacteristically calm for Danny, "I can use mine too then right?" Danny looked down at her tail and grinned a rather creepy smile. This would be fun.
She channeled her own FEAR into her hands, and immediately they lit up like she was the demon torch. Flames flickered and Danny looked like a candle. That is, if candles had killer intent. She immediately rushed Colette and punched her square in the stomach, flaming hand included.
Damage Dealt: 5 HP: 26/30 Effect: Burnt - 1 dmg, for 2 turns.
- - - - - -
Colette used her FEAR last turn, so Danny took one damage from the "burn" that Colette inflicted. The damage Danny took is calculated in the post above. Danny was burned for 1 dmg. Her HP reflects that. You also put any status effects YOUR character has in the "effects" section of the info above.
Danny has activated her own FEAR this turn- her flaming fists. It is categorized as "The Battle Cry." Let's break down the dice:
The first dice determines whether she hits or misses. 1-2 is a miss, while 3-4 is a hit. Danny rolled a 4, so we assume the attack hit.
For the amount of damage Danny deals to Colette, you simply add up the remaining dice (not including the 4 of course!). So, 2 + 1 + 2 = 5. She dealt 5 damage. Had the first dice been a 1 or a 2, we would just ignore the remaining dice; it would be a miss!
You can see more on the dice mechanics here.
Because she is a y1 student, Danny can only use her FEAR once per battle, so this is all you'll be seeing of her flaming fists! She can use her natural ability as much as she wants, but FEAR is once per battle.

"Yes, of course you can," Colette started to say matter-of-factually, until she received a blow to the stomach and was forced to fall back onto the floor in pain, dropping her swords in the process.
"Aughk oh Jack.."
Damn, that hurt. She couldn't believe it. Danny just gave her a wallop to the stomach. Even with her plate there it still hurt. Colette sat up with one arm and looked down at the spot. Her flaming, on fire belly area. "No, no! Not good!" Quickly, she took her one gloved hand and smacked out what flames were still burning. This fight was about to get into some srs business.
Colette's swords dissipated and she pushed herself up, swords suddenly reappearing in her hands once she was situated. "Okay Danny, it's my turn now," she said, expecting to deliver something just as good, if not better. For a second time, Colette channeled her FEAR into her swords, but not enough to execute the last attack she made. Now the blades of her swords split open, and the jagged teeth-like parts became elongated as she jutted the open mouths towards Danny's limbs. "It's snack time!" Colette said a little too loudly, and with a little too much enthusiasm for someone who just missed. The swords chomped down onto nothing, their teeth returning to their original size.
Damage: 0 (miss) HP: 34/40 Effect: N/A
- - - - - -
Colette received 5 damage from Danny's FEAR attack, so again her HP is decreased.
Colette has chosen to use another FEAR attack. Yes, she has two! Y2s are able to learn another FEAR on top of their newly leveled Y2 rank move, but the new FEAR will start out at Y1. Her Y1 rank attack is The Battle Cry, so we will use those dice. I've rolled the correct 4d4, so lets look at the mechanics:
The first number is 1, which means Colette missed and did no damage! If it had been a 3 or 4, she would have been successful and we would have added the remaining numbers to find how much damage she did.

Danny giggled and laughed Colette missed, and tried kicking her and tripping her in the process. It wasn't exactly the best combo. Danny ended up completely missing, and her foot connected with nothing but air.
Immediately Danny dodged left to avoid the second sword. The sword slashed off just the TINIEST centimeter of her hair. It was that close. Colette still missed though! That was the important part, right?
She backed up a few steps and put her fists in front of her like she was a boxer. It was a defensive position. "This is fun! Is the field trip just going to be lots of fighting?" If so, Danny was excited for this trip! What could be better than a field trip of just running around fighting things?
Danny winced as her burn once again made that stinging feeling again. Luckily, it seemed to disappear right afterwards. Seems as though Colette's burn attack wasn't that great.

Danny's giggling at her miss must have hit a nerve, because Colette's eye twitched ever so slightly as she stood and twirled her swords, watching Danny in her defensive position.
Somehow, she felt there was time to answer her question. "Come to think of it, I don't know much about the field trip. I don't think anyone does.." Details were never revealed, oddly. "And let's hope not. At least, not against the wrong people or.. things," she said oh so mysteriously. "But even if there are, we'll both be a little closer to ready for it, yes?"
Colette continued twirling her swords and started to move around Danny, waiting on hopefully building suspense of when she'd actually attack. Once she felt everything was in flow -- movement, sword twirling, and all -- she struck. Thankfully she didn't miss this time! The added momentum made it particularly stronger too. Colette could thank her father for that one.

Danny winced as Colette's swords swiped her up and down her body. This wasn't a fun feeling. This wasn't fun at all. Eventually Danny was knocked onto the ground, a small thud as she hit the clear shield protecting her from the depths of the pool.
She really REALLY didn't like having to look at that pool. Every time she got into the swing of battle and fighting, one glance at the pool sent a shiver down her spine. The shiver slithered all the way down to the very tip of her tail, causing her flame to flicker, every so slightly. It wasn't a welcome feeling.
While she was on the ground, Danny took a moment to both catch her breath and answer Colette's questions. "I dunno about the field trip, but I know Red was pretty upset about it," she panted a little, and then continued, "She was all worked up about some pendant thingy. Then Arel knocked me out and ..." Danny shuddered a little remembering her own death. She still couldn't quite get the sense of cold out of her mind, and poor Shehk still couldn't get her feet to warm up quite right.
Since Colette was off her guard with all of these questions, Danny pounced on the opportunity. She swung her own leg out and knocked Colette to the ground like something out of a kung fu movie. Take that!

"Asdjsldgjlsb." Colette fell against the flooring with a loud thud, and her a** hurt. That was a very unpleasant surprise.
Quickly, Colette dismissed her swords and went for Danny's legs with an annoyed glare. "Okay, no more distractions!" One hand wrapped around one of the ghoul's legs and yanked her close, and the other single gloved hand clawed wherever it could reach. It looked like it was going to be a (mostly) bare fist brawl for the time being, even if Colette technically never had to do such a thing.

Danny let out a squeal as Colette's claw raked across her stomach. It was like Colette was trying to rub her stomach, but in the worst way. It was like rubbing a cat with a fork. You just didn't do it!
Worse yet was the fact that when she tried to pull away from the ghoul, Danny just made the damage worse. It was a good thing she still had her FEAR shield up, or she could've easily earned herself a wonderful 3 finger claw scar.
Though it seemed rather futile, Danny was determined not to give up just yet. Of course, any sensible scareling would've realized that a year one student facing a year two student was just bound for failure anyways. Danny was not a sensible scareling to say the least.
Lashing out, Danny threw her shoe at Colette, like it would really do anything. She really hadn't thought much beyond that, because her focus was still captured by the pain in her abdomen.

Colette reluctantly took the shoe-throwing attack, albeit it didn't do much damage. She figured Danny must have been desperate. The Reaper had experienced a few situations herself that required using anything you could get your hands on.
Of course, she didn't want the shoe at all, but that didn't mean she couldn't use it. In return, Colette picked up the shoe and sent it right back towards its owner's face.
Take that, you darn shoe throwing fiend.
