Her hair has grown past her shoulders, so when she's training or in combat, she'll tie her hair up or braid it (when she has time) so that it doesn't hinder her eyesight. Kaede's eyes are brown, wide, and very expressive. They say eyes are the gateway to the soul, but in Kaede's case you might as well just be mind reading her.
Since living at the Senju Estate, she has been able to eat more healthier now, no longer haggard or bony. Still, her physical fitness is still pretty laughable, even compared to the civilian children of the village. And to her limitless inferiority complex, her height has barely changed in the past two years while her face remains childish looking. Perhaps her only redeeming physical quality (in her opinion), is her ability to run away really quickly. They're always brightly colored with floral patterned print, though the color she seems to gravitate towards most is pink. Around her waist is a makeshift equipment belt that she inherited from her older brother Shoichi as gift. Kaede has a speech impediment and a quiet, soft-spoken voice. She has improved a little bit, thanks to her interactions with her peers. However, the girl is still afraid of animals, and wary of strangers. If there's a familiar face around, she tends to hide behind that person and observe the stranger from afar, speaking only when spoken to.
▪ Polite
The girl can now call people by their first names, thanks to her interactions with her peers at the academy. However, Kaede is still a bit uncomfortable about it. It takes the insistence of the second party to get her to go on a first name basis, as she prefers to address people formally whenever she can. And if someone has done something for her, she always makes sure to show her gratitude by giving that person a gift (such as a teddy bear for Taiju, or bead bracelets for Nanase and Atsushi).
▪ Moralistic
Kaede is a goody two shoes, and she believes in following rules word for word. They were written there for a reason, so why cut corners? The only times she will do something that is against what she normally believes in, are the times when it involves her friends and family. Such as the time she ditched school for her father.
▪ Paranoid
Living in a socially hostile and oppressive environment has affected her personality and behavior significantly. Kaede believes the best way to be prepared for anything is to be prepared for the worst. She has been subject to several rounds of “target practice”, being tripped, and pranked upon by the village's children. The girl fidgets a lot when things become too peaceful for comfort. Such that it is difficult to sleep.
▪ Low Self-Esteem
There's being modest, and being this. Since the day she was born, she was told countless times by countless people that she was incompetent. It has gone to the point that Kaede has accepted this as a fact of life. It doesn't bother her as much as it used to. In fact, it bothers her more when people compliment her, something that she isn't used to and has no clue how to accept.
▪ Perfectionist
If it's not good enough to show, then it's not good enough to hand in. Perhaps it is due to her critical perception of herself, but Kaede extends that viewpoint to her work as well. She's a very detail oriented person, and is very OCD about some of the most minor things (not using the cubed onions that she had cut because they weren't '1 cm x 1 cm cubed' enough).
▪ Studious
Her father has drilled in the importance of education and skills, something that he lacks and is unable to give her. As a result, most of her time is spent indoors, reading about theories, history, and science: her favorite subjects. Anything she learns in class or researches in the library, she writes down as notes in her scrolls for future reference.
▪ Clumsy
Kaede is very accident prone. Either she causes accidents, like using the Kawarimi no Jutsu to switch places with a bird up in a tree and immediately falling off the branch afterwards. Or people cause accidents involving her, like her apartment blowing up, or the Juugodaime running into her twice. Yes, she might as well be unlucky on top of clumsy.
▪ Easily Distressed
The Juugodaime once said that Kaede reminded him of tea. However, the girl had contrarily replied that coffee would be a more appropriate metaphor, as she is jittery and overreactive. She's easily frightened by the slightest noise or touch, extremely uncomfortable with anyone near her personal space (dogs are the ones guilty of this the most, and so she doesn't like them), and easily stressed over the most minor problems. Her sister Chouko has often joked that she's going to go pre-maturely gray someday, but that doesn't stop her words from being scarily plausible.
▪ Crybaby
The first shinobi to make her cry would be Takeshi, though it was only once. Same with Taiju, Saito, Aryza and her dog Kuroi, and Conan. So has a book, the Konoha First Aid manual. Her academy teacher Yarotai and her friend Tao, twice. The person who holds the record of making her cry the most? That title solely belongs to the Juugodaime for a record of 4 and counting.

You're no good, just like your father.
Said father is Shirayuki Yamato, an uneducated loser who has divorced four times. One of his previous wives was Akimichi Ayame, with whom he had Kaede's half-sister Akimichi Chouko. Ayame no longer lives under the same roof as Kaede, but she is possibly the closest person the girl could call a 'mother figure'. Currently, he is a single father of seven children, two of whom were adopted. Yamato's lack of education partially stemmed from the fact that he grew up as a war orphan, never knowing who his parents were. His only surrogate parent was his orphanage's matron, Takahashi Mariko. A kind, yet strict and religious woman who could never quite control his rowdy behavior.
Her father was quite strong for a nonshinobi in his younger years, as if to make up for his unintelligence. He used to do odd jobs like delivery work, or moving furniture, or even chopping wood. When Yamato aged past his prime, his body could no longer handle hard physical labor and he consequently broke his right arm trying to prove otherwise. It never completely healed. Yamato refused to visit a medic-nin, wanting to devote his income towards his eldest son's education instead. Afterwards, he was fired job after job. No employer wants to hire an old man with one useless arm, not when he could hire a young man with two strong arms. Until finally... he found a job collecting and sorting out the village's trash (an unwanted job). It was at this job that he went from the derogatory nickname "Loser Yamato" to “The Garbage Man”, working from 4 in the morning to 9 at night. As such, he only ever has time to see his children once a week. He drinks and smokes whenever he can spare the money for it. And if poverty wasn't such an issue, he might have become a full blown alcoholic.
Kaede's childhood would have been a lot more leisurely too. But instead, she spent it working at civilian odd jobs: cleaning bathrooms, chopping up ingredients, or painting fences. Anything she could do to ease her father's financial burdens. Whenever Kaede wasn't working, she was at home doing housework or bonding with her siblings. But when her older brothers Shinichi and Shoichi left the village for a five year training trip, she turned to books to occupy herself as she waited for her father to come home. Anything to stave off the loneliness she felt in that quiet apartment.
Because of who her father is, Kaede had often been dismissed as inferior by fellow peers and villagers. And though she loves her father very much, she is ashamed of him. She doesn't blame her father, but she also doesn't want to continue leading a lifestyle of poverty and social stigma. Instead, she chose to walk the path of shinobi, believing it to be a well respected career and a way of proving the worth of her family's name. Her father does not interfere with her choice. In fact, he expected it might happen, as four of his children had already made that decision as well (Shoichi, Shinichi, Seiji, and Chouko).
The day she decided to become a shinobi would be the day her life started to change. It was there at the shinobi academy, a few weeks before her class year would actually start, that she had met the first group of people who didn't treat see as The Garbage Man's daughter but rather see her simply as herself. The first was Sasaki Takeshi: an Uchiha who, at first, mostly ignored her in the classroom to focus on his training. Her future classmate would later come to acknowledge her and even smile at her once on a blue moon. Then, there was Masato Kurokawa and Hyuuga Tao. Two friendly shinobi of the class graduating that year with whom she studied handseals with at the mountains of Konoha. Of her two sempai, it would be Tao who would become her first friend, despite his noble bloodline and her low social status. They worked together to learn the Nawanuke no Jutsu, administered by her future academy sensei, Miharo Yarotai.
Kaede's relationship with Yarotai began on a mildly shaky start, when she had taken one of his jokes about bringing an apple to class too seriously and almost cried over 'forgetting' to bring one. It was further compounded when she began learning the Henge no Jutsu in the forests. No thanks to Senju Taiju, one of her chuunin sempai who was on friendly terms with Yarotai. The bad advice Taiju had given her (which involved picturing Yarotai naked to 'help' her focus on her Henge no Jutsu of her future sensei) resulted with her flipping out and running away from Yarotai. Taiju would later give chase to make amends. Her string of bad luck didn't end there, no... in the midst of her fleeing, she would have an unfortunate encounter with yet another Senju, the Juugodaime candidate Senju Zephyr. Or rather, he ran into her while in his child form, collided like a missile, accidentally dropped his expensive and rare doll, broke it, blamed her for it, and effectively aggravated his companion and former student Hyuuga Yokou into smacking him... right into Kaede, causing the two to bump heads and kiss. Effectively scarring the young girl for life. Her first kiss would end with her having a panic attack and fainting, and leaving Taiju to clean the Hokage's mess.
Taiju brought her over to the shinobi academy, where he was certain no students would be at. Ironically, his hunch was correct. The two would have a heartfelt talk about family, honor, the different paths shinobi could take, and the true meaning of 'strength', prompting Taiju to bring Kaede over to the meadows. The place where Tao's class would be having their genin exams, proctored by none other than Taiju himself. There, the girl could see for herself the hardships one would go through to earn the right to be called a shinobi, and prepare herself for the day when she would stand where her sempai were standing.
Unfortunately, there was no way of preparing herself for yet another collision missile from Zephyr. Mercifully, he was in his adult form this time. Thus leading her to believe that the man before her and the boy who had stolen her first kiss were two completely different people. Unmercifully, he was still bitter about the broken doll and vented his anger. Kaede's proper reaction was to break down in tears, and indirectly, caused his tag-a-long apprentice Yakedo Saito to cry as well (he thought his sensei was yelling at him). Tao, like a Hyuuga in shining white armor, came over to confront the roaring Senju dragon (: x) and mediated the situation on Kaede's behalf (as she was a sputtering and hiccuping wreck of a mess at this point). Once things had settled down, and their friendship further affirmed, Kaede would part with Tao wishing him luck on his genin exams, though she was confident he would pass with flying colors. This left her with Zephyr, where the two engaged in awkward chit chat (Kaede offering the Hokage alcohol as a form of comfort, Zephyr being compared to a princess) until he decided to pick up where Yarotai left off and instruct her in the workings of the Henge no Jutsu. Since Kaede used Saito's appearance as a reference for her Henge no Jutsu exercises, she thought it to be appropriate to introduce herself to the boy, only to be promptly ignored and effectively reduced to tears (like sensei, like student).
The genin candidates had already rushed off to complete their exam objectives by the time Kaede mastered the Henge no Jutsu. Thus, unable to observe her sempai's progressions any further, the girl was left to indulge in some self-imposed training (she still couldn't bring herself to face Yarotai, and she didn't want to divert Zephyr's attention away from his student's training), warily go to the hospital to check herself for any injuries, encounter Inuzuka Aryza and her dog Kuroi (who frightened her despite his small size), and then head off to her civilian job for what would be the last time. After completing her shift, she explained her decision in changing careers before handing her boss her resignation letter. Effectively marking the end of her civilian days. On her way home from work, the girl would have an awkward encounter with the Heir of the Sharingan, Uchiha Kiyoshi. It began with a sandal missile, consisted of Kiyoshi offering the girl money to ease her family's situation, and ended with her refusing it. No doubt leaving a bad impression on the other shinobi.
Upon arriving home, Kaede set aside her training to make a graduation gift for Tao, only to realize that she didn't have the necessary materials to sew embroidery on a kunai pouch. The girl headed over to her neighbor Mikage Keiko's apartment to ask if she could borrow some needles and thread. Luckily too, had she stayed in her apartment any longer she would have been blown up along with it (oddly enough, hers was the only apartment to suffer any damages). Unluckily, the realization that she and her father were now homeless left Kaede in such a panicking and chaotic mess, that Mikage had to knock the girl out to calm her down. The culprit was none other than Hyuuga Elruda, an academy student who had somehow managed to acquire a bomb and had accidentally set it off. She and her companion Senju Anzu would take responsibility and carry the unconscious girl over to the hospital.
Elruda's mother Yokou healed her wounds and immediately discharged her afterwards, as her injuries were minor. The matter of homelessness was solved with a proposal offered by Anzu: the Senju would offer her family temporary living arrangements at their estate until her family could find themselves a permanent residence. To deny this generous offer was not an option, and so Shirayuki Yamato gratefully accepted these terms. Kaede would wait at the hospital until the living arrangements were completed, spending that time finishing Tao's kunai pouch and making acquaintances with Ito Minoru and Senju Conan.
That very same night, she had an emotional reunion with her brother Shinichi at the entrance of the Senju Estate. He had recently returned to Konoha and was (unhappily) informed of their family's current situation. It was there, in the midst of the guest welcoming process, that she learned that the Zephyr she met at the meadows was, in fact, the same Zephyr nominated as the next Hokage. She would also learn that he was her brother's long time childhood 'friend', something that Shinichi was very reluctant to talk about. After an awkward and tension filled dinner (well mostly between Zephyr and her brother), the Shirayuki family was lead to their rooms. Thus, concluding one of the unluckiest days of her life, and beginning a series of eventful days at the Senju Estate.

Over the course of the next two years, Kaede had finally managed to make amends with Yarotai (she gave him apples the next day she saw him and apologized for running away). Tao's graduation gift was finished on time and delivered on the night of the headband ceremony and the eventful Hokage inauguration ceremony. When her first official day at the academy began, Kaede was a nervous wreck. Her sempai Tao and Kuro were nowhere in sight; over the course of the summer she had already gotten so used to the idea of 'friendship' that the thought of going a whole year alone frightened her. Though her worries were for naught. She may have spent the first few weeks of school hovering by Yarotai's side (a familiar face, and thus a comfort zone for her), but she eventually made new friends. With the closeness of these bonds, it was thought that a genin squad could be formed from them. However, it was not to be.
Kaede failed the genin exams.
During the days of preparing for the exams, the girl had studied meticulously. Kaede was so worked up that she stayed up late on the night before the exams to cram in more hours. And, as a consequence, fell asleep in the midst of testing. She was so devastated by her failure that she spent two weeks moping in her room, a depression that only Shoichi could pull her out of.
Next time, I will pass, the girl promised herself. Though there were no familiar faces in this class roster, her second year at the academy went much more smoothly. After all, she had already gone through this curriculum once before. And so when the date of the exams drew near, she felt that this would be the time that she would actually pass. However, a week prior to the exams something unexpected happened: her father had collapsed from a heart attack. Distraught at the thought of losing a father, Kaede had skipped her last days of school and the genin exams to stay by her father's side (in what she worried would be his last moments). She received a harsh scolding from her father, but she does not regret her decision.
Months later, when Yamato was discharged from the hospital, he made his daughter promise him... that this time she would not let anything, not him or his health, get in the way of her dreams. She had already sacrificed the chance to graduate for him. Once was enough.
It is now the third year she will attend the academy, and she is determined to see this year through all the way to the end.
